Feminism calls for plural representations between the maternal ideal and sexuality. It encounters singular drive destinations, which, in turn, evidence what are the associations between identifications and loss, through the traces of seduction and the characteristics of the object choices that are made. Two clinical case studies demonstrate, through the transference dynamics, the relationship between hysteria, masochism, and melancholy.

The concept of the "death drive" is overly laden with the word death, so that its use is subject to a startling confusion of the tongues. Freud identifies two types of drives and their fusion and defusion inscribe fundamental dynamics in the psychic economy throughout life. The death drives are often regarded as the negative element but they can also turn out to be useful and beneficial. The plurality of the death drive's action in the twofold perspective is put forward by Freud: destructive unbinding at the service of construction. The paradox is that the death drive may well be sometimes the only resort for the preservation of life - "dying in order to survive." However scandalous it may seem, the experience of pain is what ensures the permanence of the taste for life. The analysis becomes a site of suffering that amounts to a transitional space where the question of belonging is no longer really at stake. What can be experienced in the transference is the capacity to suffer in the presence of the other, which implies the capacity to experience, in the here-and-now, a high degree of excitation through physical or mental pain, via a tolerable narcissistic withdrawal, despite the presence of the other. Jeanne's treatment underscores this perspective.

(AU)

Chabert departs from the Freudian dialectical opposition between masculine and feminine, as well as between sexual drives and self-preservative drives. Following on from Freud in his understanding of the Oedipus complex in girls, which leads to the change of object, the author points to the significance of anxiety in girls pertaining to the loss of maternal love, the foundation of her narcissism. Furthermore, for Chabert, the feminine, in both sexes, is the fundamental sedimentation point of bisexuality and of the ensuing identifications. Two clinical studies are presented which highlight the anxiety of pas sivity in relation to different aspects such as melancholia and hysteria.

The authors present the history of individual psychoanalytic psychodrama and its current developments as practised in France. They put forward the technique, objectives and rules, along with the indications, limits and risks that ensue from the specific nature of this therapeutic approach. Through its technical adjustments, individual psychoanalytic psychodrama provides a therapeutic option that is appropriate to the defences prevalent in many patients that cause classical psychotherapies to fail: massive inhibition, operative functioning far removed from affects or in false self mode; phobias, disavowal or splitting of the internal psychic life and emotions; prevalence of short discharge circuits in acted-out behaviours and bodily or visceral complaints and expressions. Psychodrama utilizes these defences not in order to eliminate them but to 'subvert' them so that they can continue to carry out their protective role, in particular ensuring narcissistic continuity. At the same time, psychodrama relaxes these defences and facilitates a possible filtering through of the repressed material. Through the number of actors and the diffraction of transference that this allows, psychodrama provides a possibility of adjusting the potentially traumatic effect of the encounter with the object and the instigation of the transference in the regressive dimension induced by any psychotherapeutic process.
