This study aimed to examine the effects of spatial and temporal variability in edaphic, and climatic attributeson soil net nitrogen mineralization rate, and to understand the pattern of fine root decomposition of dominant and co-dominant tree species, and its influence on the nutrient cycling in forest ecosystems. Study was carried out at four different sites in sub-tropical forest ecosystems of Shorea robusta, in foothills of Central Himalayan region, India. Co-dominant tree species at four sites were Mallotus philippensis (site A), Glochidion velutinum (site B), Holarrhena pubescens (site C), and Tectona grandis (site D). Buried bag technique was used for nitrogen mineralization, while fine root decomposition was determined using fine root mesh bags. Seasonal variation, soil depth, soil characteristics, and site variability, all significantly (p < 0.05) affected nitrogen mineralization rates. Fine root decomposition was significantly affected by nutrient concentration of fine roots. Total mineral nitrogen was maximum at site D (16.24 ± 0.96 µg g-1 soil), while minimum at site C (10.10 ± 0.84 µg g-1 soil). Maximum nitrogen mineralization (13.18 ± 0.18 µg g-1 month-1) was recorded during summer season at site D, while the minimum nitrogen mineralization (3.20 ± 0.46 µg g-1 month-1) was recorded during rainy season at site C. Inorganic-N and net nitrogen mineralization was relatively higher in 0-20 cm soil layer than 20-40 cm and 40-60 cm soil layer. The fine roots showed 70.61-74.82 % weight loss on completion of 365 days of decomposition process. Maximum fine root decomposition was observed in the G. velutinum, and minimum in T. grandis. A significant positive correlation (p < 0.05) was observed between root nitrogen and carbon content, and decomposition rates per month. This study concluded that the spatial and temporal variability in soil nitrogen mineralization rates and fine root decomposition optimises nutrient cycling in forest ecosystems, which can contribute to the development of sustainable forest management practices.

Farmers in developing countries irrigate crops using raw urban and industrial effluents with consequent risks from metal contamination. Therefore, soils, crops and groundwater from an effluent irrigation use site were assessed for Cd, Cr, Ni and Pb. Total and available contents of metals in soil followed the order Pb>Ni>Cr>Cd. Crops accumulated more Pb, followed by Cd, Ni and Cr. Pb exceeded the permissible limit with wastewater irrigation only, but Cd exceeded the limit even with combined irrigations of wastewater and groundwater. Among crops, sugar beet assimilated highest Cd (3.14 µg g(-1)) and Pb (6.42 µg g(-1)) concentrations. Legumes accumulated more metals than cereals. Long-term use of wastewater and its conjunctive use with groundwater led to toxic accumulations of Cd, Pb, Ni and Cr. Cd with higher availability and mobility indices and lower toxicity limit, posed the maximum risk of food-chain contamination.

Multivariate statistical techniques were employed for monitoring of ground-surface water interactions in rivers. The river Varuna is situated in the Indo-Gangetic plain and is a small tributary of river Ganga. The study area was monitored at seven sampling sites for 3 years (2010-12), and eight physio-chemical parameters were taken into account for this study. The data obtained were analysed by multivariate statistical techniques so as to reveal the underlying implicit information regarding proposed interactions for the relevant area. The principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA), and the results of correlations were also studied for all parameters monitored at every site. Methods used in this study are essentially multivariate statistical in nature and facilitate the interpretation of data so as to extract meaningful information from the datasets. The PCA technique was able to compress the data from eight to three parameters and captured about 78.5% of the total variance by performing varimax rotation over the principal components. The varifactors, as yielded from PCA, were treated by CA which grouped them convincingly into three groups having similar characteristics and source of contamination. Moreover, the loading of variables on significant PCs showed correlations between various ground water and surface water (GW-SW) parameters. The correlation coefficients calculated for various physiochemical parameters for ground and surface water established the correlations between them. Thus, this study presents the utility of multivariate statistical techniques for evaluation of the proposed interactions and effective future monitoring of potential sites.

Dust is considered as one of the most widespread air pollutants. The objective of the study was to analyse the effect of dust load (DL) on the leaf attributes of the four tree species planted along the roadside at a low pollution Banaras Hindu University (BHU) campus and a highly polluted industrial area (Chunar, Mirzapur) of India. The studied leaf attributes were: leaf area, specific leaf area (SLA), relative water content (RWC), leaf nitrogen content (LNC), leaf phosphorus content (LPC), chlorophyll content (Chl), maximum stomatal conductance (Gs(max)), maximum photosynthetic rate (A (max)) and intrinsic water-use efficiency (WUEi). Results showed significant effect of sites and species for DL and the leaf attributes. Average DL across the four tree species was greater at Chunar, whereas, the average values of leaf attributes were greater at the BHU campus. Maximum DL was observed for Tectona grandis at Chunar site and minimum for Syzygium cumini at BHU campus. Across the two sites, maximum value of SLA, Chl and Gs(max) were exhibited by S. cumini, whereas, the greatest value of RWC, LNC, LPC, A (max) and WUEi were observed in Anthocephalus cadamba. A. cadamba and S. cumini exhibited 28 and 27 times more dust accumulation, respectively, at the most polluted Chunar site as compared to the BHU campus. They also exhibited less reduction in A (max) due to dust deposition as compared to the other two species. Therefore, both these species may be promoted for plantation along the roadside of the sites having greater dust deposition.

Accurate characterization of biomass in different forest components is important to estimate their contribution to total carbon stock. Due to lack of allometric equations for biomass estimation of woody species at juvenile stage, the carbon stored in this forest component is ignored. We harvested 47 woody species at juvenile stage in a dry tropical forest and developed regression models for the estimation of above-ground biomass (AGB). The models including wood-specific gravity (ρ) exhibited higher R(2) than those without ρ. The model consisting of ρ, stem diameter (D), and height (H) not only exhibited the highest R(2) value but also had the lowest standard error of estimate. We suggest that ρ-based regression model is a viable option for nondestructive estimation of biomass of forest trees at juvenile stage.

Functional traits (FTs) integrate the ecological and evolutionary history of a species, and can potentially be used to predict its response as well as its influence on ecosystem functioning. Study of inter-specific variation in the FTs of plants aids in classifying species into plant functional types (PFTs) and provides insights into fundamental patterns and trade-offs in plant form and functioning and the effect of changing species composition on ecosystem functions. Specifically, this paper focuses on those FTs that make a species successful in the dry tropical environment. Following a brief overview, we discuss plant FTs that may be particularly relevant to tropical deciduous forests (TDFs). We consider the traits under the following categories: leaf traits, stem and root traits, reproductive traits, and traits particularly relevant to water availability. We compile quantitative information on functional traits of dry tropical forest species. We also discuss trait-based grouping of plants into PFTs. We recognize that there is incomplete knowledge about many FTs and their effects on TDFs and point out the need for further research on PFTs of TDF species, which can enable prediction of the dynamics of these forests in the face of disturbance and global climate change. Correlations between structural and ecophysiological traits and ecosystem functioning should also be established which could make it possible to generate predictions of changes in ecosystem services from changes in functional composition.

Spatial samples of surface and ground water collected from land disposal site of dye waste mixed sewage effluents at Binjhole, in Haryana, India were analyzed to evaluate its effect on quality of pond, hand pumps and ground waters for human health and irrigation purposes. It was found that average COD and TDS of dye houses discharge (310 and 3,920 mg/L) and treated sewage (428 and 1,470 mg/L) on mixing acquired the values of 245 and 1,780 mg/L and only Pb (0.24 microg/L) was above the permissible limit for irrigation purpose. Disposal of this mixed water to village pond changes the COD and TDS to 428 and 1,470 mg/L, respectively. COD and TDS of hand pump water samples were 264 and 1,190 mg/L, where as in tube well water these values were 151 and 900 mg/L. Though the ground water contamination seemed to decrease with the increasing distance from the pond but COD, TDS and BOD values continued to be quite high in water samples drawn from the hand pumps up to a distance of 500 m from pond. However, the major cause of the concern in these waters was Pb (0.11-0.45 ppm). Crops grown with this water shows accumulation of heavy metals like Pb,Cd, Fe, Mn, Ni, Cu, and Zn but in few crops they (Zn, Pb and Cd) exceed the safe limits. Regular consumption of these crop products may lead heavy metal toxicity. It was concluded from this study that the deep seepage of effluents led to deterioration of ground water quality for drinking purposes and the well waters rendered unfit for irrigation purposes within a span of 2 years. This warrants appropriate disposal measures for sewage and dye industry effluents in order to prevent deterioration of ground water and health of human and animals.

Transplantation of neural stem cells (NSC) derived dopamine (DA) neurons has emerged as an alternative approach to fetal neural cell transplantation in Parkinson's disease (PD). However, similar to fetal neural cell, survival of these neurons following transplantation is also limited due to limited striatal reinnervation (graft with dense neuronal core), limited host-graft interaction, poor axonal outgrowth, lack of continuous neurotrophic factors supply and principally an absence of cell adhesion molecules mediated appropriate developmental cues. In the present study, an attempt has been made to increase survival and function of NSC derived DA neurons, by co-grafting with Zuckerkandl's organ (a paraneural organ that expresses neurotrophic factors as well as cell adhesion molecules); to provide continuous NTF support and developmental cues to transplanted DA neurons in the rat model of PD. 24 weeks post transplantation, a significant number of surviving functional NSC derived DA neurons were observed in the co-transplanted group as evident by an increase in the number of tyrosine hydroxylase immunoreactive (TH-IR) neurons, TH-IR fiber density, TH-mRNA expression and TH-protein level at the transplantation site (striatum). Significant behavioral recovery (amphetamine induced stereotypy and locomotor activity) and neurochemical recovery (DA-D2 receptor binding and DA and DOPAC levels at the transplant site) were also observed in the NSC+ZKO co-transplanted group as compared to the NSC or ZKO alone transplanted group. In vivo results were further substantiated by in vitro studies, which suggest that ZKO increases the NSC derived DA neuronal survival, differentiation, DA release and neurite outgrowth as well as protects against 6-OHDA toxicity in co-culture condition. The present study suggests that long-term and continuous NTF support provided by ZKO to the transplanted NSC derived DA neurons, helped in their better survival, axonal arborization and integration with host cells, leading to long-term functional restoration in the rat model of PD.

To evaluate the production potential and Cd removal by three flower crops, viz.: marigold (Tagetes erecta), chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum indicum) and gladiolus (Gladiolus grandiflorus), an experiment was conducted on differentially contaminated soils (DTPA-Cd 0.6-68.4 mg kg(-1)). Biotoxicity of Cd lead to reductions in growth and flower yield of marigold at DTPA-Cd >or= 7.9 mg kg(-1) soil, while the productivity of chrysanthemum and gladiolus was sustained up to 21.2 mg kg(-1). DTPA-Cd for 50% yield reduction (C(50)) was 85, 106 and 215 mg kg(-1) soil for marigold, chrysanthemum and gladiolus, respectively, that indicates a better Cd-tolerance in gladiolus. The uptake of Cd increased with contents in soils and the maximum accumulation occurred in leaves. Among the economic parts, gladiolus spikes accumulated the highest Cd (7.2) followed by flowers of marigold (6.5) and chrysanthemum (4.0 mg kg(-1)). But, because of higher biomass, the total Cd removal was the maximum with chrysanthemum (8.3) followed by gladiolus (6.0) and the minimum (2.6 mg m(-2)) with marigold. Gladiolus with highest tolerance and Cd-content in saleable part holds potential to clean up the moderately contaminated soils.

In the present study, an attempt has been made to explore the neuroprotective and neuroreparative (neurorescue) effect of black tea extract (BTE) in 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA)-lesioned rat model of Parkinson's disease (PD). In the neuroprotective (BTE + 6-OHDA) and neurorescue (6-OHDA + BTE) experiments, the rats were given 1.5% BTE orally prior to and after intrastriatal 6-OHDA lesion respectively. A significant recovery in d-amphetamine induced circling behavior (stereotypy), spontaneous locomotor activity, dopamine (DA)-D2 receptor binding, striatal DA and 3-4 dihydroxy phenyl acetic acid (DOPAC) level, nigral glutathione level, lipid peroxidation, striatal superoxide dismutase and catalase activity, antiapoptotic and proapoptotic protein level was evident in BTE + 6-OHDA and 6-OHDA + BTE groups, as compared to lesioned animals. BTE treatment, either before or after 6-OHDA administration protected the dopaminergic neurons, as evident by significantly higher number of surviving tyrosine hydroxylase immunoreactive (TH-ir) neurons, increased TH protein level and TH mRNA expression in substantia nigra. However, the degree of improvement in motor and neurochemical deficits was more prominent in rats receiving BTE before 6-OHDA. Results suggest that BTE exerts both neuroprotective and neurorescue effects against 6-OHDA-induced degeneration of the nigrostriatal dopaminergic system, suggesting that possibly daily intake of BTE may slow down the PD progression as well as delay the onset of neurodegenerative processes in PD.

The present study was undertaken to explore involvement of nitric oxide (NO) in the experimental models of Parkinson's disease. Neurodegeneration was induced by unilateral injections of 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) or lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in the right striatum. Lesions were functionally evaluated by amphetamine-induced asymmetrical behaviour and by decrease in the tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) immunostaining. An induction in the expression of iNOS and augmentation in nitrite content was observed in both the models. The extent of increase in iNOS expression was, however, different but the elevation in the nitrite content was comparable in both the models. The increase in iNOS expression inversely correlated with the tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) immunolabeling. Animals pretreated with a NOS inhibitor, N(G)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME), exhibited complete protection against amphetamine induced rotations in both the models. Thus, augmented NO availability subsequent to iNOS induction seems to play an important role in the initial phase of neurodegeneration.

The recent advances in information and communication technologies offer real and practical opportunities to health professionals to share expertise and resources in health care over distances. For a country like India with pockets of medical excellence surrounded by a vast number of badly equipped hospitals with limited specialists, telemedicine could revolutionize health care. The potential of telemedicine seem to be vital in avoiding the frame of travel, in timely getting specialist advise to remote areas, minimizing the cost and of course an opportunity to learn from each other. In developed countries the technological advancement and research aims primarily to satiate the needs of their armed forces and to ensure tactical and technical supremacy. The medical community in the Indian Armed Forces should harness the technologies and embrace this revolution of the information age to provide world class combat casualty care.

Free radical mediated damage has been reported to contribute significantly towards low survival (5-10%) of grafted dopaminergic neurons, post transplantation. In the present study, an attempt has been made to explore the neuroprotective potential of the combination of two major antioxidants ascorbic acid (AA) and glutathione (GSH) on ventral mesencephalic cells (VMC) and nigral dopamine (DA) neurons when co-transplanted together with VMC in rat model of Parkinson's disease (PD). GSH and AA have been reported to act co-operatively in the conditions of oxidative stress thereby helping in maintaining the cellular GSH/GSSG redox status. Functional recovery was assessed 12 weeks post transplantation, where a significant restoration (p<0.001) in d-amphetamine induced circling behavior (62%), spontaneous locomotor activity (SLA; 64%), dopamine-D2 receptor binding (63%), dopamine (65%) and 3,4-dihydroxy phenyl acetic acid (DOPAC) level (64%) was observed in co-transplanted animals as compared to lesioned and VMC alone grafted rats. VMC and GSH+AA co-transplanted animals exhibited a significantly higher surviving TH-immunoreactive (TH-ir) neurons number (p<0.01), TH-ir fibers outgrowth (p<0.05) in striatal graft and TH-ir neurons in substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc) (p<0.01), as compared to VMC alone transplanted rats. An attempt was made to further confirm our in vivo observations through in vitro experiments where following in vitro exposure to 6-OHDA, a higher cell survival (p<0.01), TH-ir cell counts (p<0.001) and DA and DOPAC levels (p<0.01) were also observed in 8-day-old VMC culture in presence of GSH+AA as compared to VMC cultured in absence of antioxidants. The results suggest that GSH+AA when co-transplanted with VMC provide higher restoration probably by increasing the survival of grafted VMC and simultaneously supporting nigral TH-immunopositive neurons in rat model of PD.

Exogenous administration of various neurotrophic factors has been shown to protect neurons in animal model of Parkinson's disease (PD). Several attempts are being made to search a tissue source simultaneously expressing many of these neurotrophic factors. Carotid body (CB) contains oxygen-sensitive glomus cells rich in dopamine (DA) and expresses glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor, brain-derived neurotrophic factor and neurotrophin-3. We have attempted to study the functional restoration following co-transplantation of CB cells and ventral mesencephalic cells (VMC) in a 6-hydroxydopamine-lesioned rat model of PD. A significant recovery (p < 0.001) in d-amphetamine-induced circling behavior (80%) and spontaneous locomotor activity (85%) was evident in co-transplanted animals at 12 weeks post-transplantation as compared to lesioned animals. Similarly, a significant (p < 0.001) restoration was observed in DA-D(2) receptor binding (77%), striatal DA (87%) and 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC) (85%) levels and nigral DA (75%) and DOPAC (74%) levels. Functional recovery was accompanied by tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) expression and quantification of TH-positive cells by image analysis revealed a significant restoration in TH-immunoreactive (IR) fiber density in striatum, as well as TH-IR neurons in substantia nigra pars compacta in co-transplanted animals over VMC-transplanted animals. The result suggests that co-transplantation of CB cells along with VMC provides better and long-term functional restoration in the rat model of PD, possibly by supporting the survival of newly grafted cells as well as remaining host DA neurons.

Different strategies have been worked out to promote survival of transplanted fetal ventral mesencephalic cells (VMCs) using trophic and nontrophic support. Olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs) express high level of growth factors including NGF, bFGF, GDNF, and NT3, which are known to play important role in functional restoration or neurodegeneration. In the present investigation, an attempt has been made to study functional restoration in 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA)-lesioned rat model of Parkinson's disease (PD) following cotransplantation of VMC and OECs (cultured from olfactory bulb, OB) in striatal region. The functional restoration was assessed using neurobehavioral, neurochemical, and immunohistochemical approach. At 12 weeks, post-transplantation, a significant recovery (P < 0.001) in D-amphetamine induced circling behavior (73%), and spontaneous locomotor activity (SLA, 81%) was evident in cotransplanted animals when compared with 6-OHDA-lesioned animals. A significant restoration (P < 0.001) in [3H]-spiperone binding (77%), dopamine (DA) (82%) and 3,4-dihydroxy phenyl acetic acid (DOPAC) level (75%) was observed in animals cotransplanted with OECs and VMC in comparison to lesioned animals. A significantly high expression and quantification of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH)-positive cells in cotransplanted animals further confirmed the supportive role of OECs in viability of transplanted dopaminergic cells, which in turn may be helping in functional restoration. This was further substantiated by our observation of enhanced TH immunoreactivity and differentiation in VMC cocultured with OECs under in vitro conditions as compared to VMC alone cultures. The results suggest that cotransplantation of OECs and VMC may be a better approach for functional restoration in 6-OHDA-induced rat model of Parkinson's disease.

Pyrethroid-based mosquito repellents (MR) are commonly used to protect humans against mosquito vector. New born babies and children are often exposed to pyrethroids for long periods by the use of liquid vaporizers. Occupational and experimental studies indicate that pyrethroids can cause clinical, biochemical and neurological changes, and that exposure to pyrethroids during organogenesis and early developmental period is especially harmful. The neurotoxicity caused by MR has aroused concern among public regarding their use. In the present study, the effect of exposure of rat pups during early developmental stages to a pyrethroid-based MR (allethrin, 3.6% w/v, 8h per day through inhalation) on blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability was investigated. Sodium fluororescein (SF) and Evan's blue (EB) were used as micromolecular and macromolecular tracers, respectively. Exposure during prenatal (gestation days 1-20), postnatal (PND1-30) and perinatal (gestation days 1-20 + PND1-30) periods showed significant increase in the brain uptake index (BUI) of SF by 54% (P < 0.01), 70% (P < 0.01), 79% (P < 0.01), respectively. This increase persisted (68%, P < 0.01) even 1 week after withdrawal of exposure (as assessed on PND37). EB did not exhibit significant change in BBB permeability in any of the group. The results suggest that MR inhalation during early prenatal/postnatal/perinatal life may have adverse effects on infants leading to central nervous system (CNS) abnormalities, if a mechanism operates in humans similar to that in rat pups.

Medical Certificate of Cause of Death, commonly called Death Certificate, is the most frequently issued certificate, at least by a government employed medical officer, if not by a private practitioner. It is common knowledge that many medical officers, even some of those with incomparable medical knowledge and expertise, do not fill up this document of immense medical and legal importance correctly. The reasons may be many, ranging from ignorance to indifference. Medical officers of Armed Forces Medical Services attending refresher courses (MOJC) have always requested the authors for a class on this topic. Considering these aspects, the authors have tried to clarify different issues concerning the question.

Among trophic factors already known, glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) and other members of its family have potent and specific action on dopaminergic neurons. In the present investigation an attempt has been made to validate the role of GDNF co-transplantation with fetal ventral mesencephalic cells (VMC) on functional viability and restoration using neurobehavioral, neurochemical and immunohistochemical parameters at 6 weeks post-transplantation in 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) lesioned rat model of Parkinson's disease (PD). A significant restoration (P<0.01) in D-amphetamine induced rotations, spontaneous and apomorphine induced locomotor activity in rats co-transplanted with VMC and GDNF was observed as compared to VMC alone transplanted rats. Level of dopamine (DA), 3,4-dihydroxy-phenyl acetic acid (DOPAC) and dopamine D2 (DA-D2) receptors in the caudate putamen (CPu) were significantly (P<0.001) restored in co-transplanted group as compared to VMC transplanted or GDNF administered animals. The functional viability of transplanted VMC was confirmed by tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) expression and quantification of TH-positive cells by image analysis revealed a significant restoration in TH-IR fibers density as well as TH-IR neurons counts in co-transplanted animals over VMC transplanted animals. Results suggest that co-transplantation of VMC and GDNF may be a better approach towards functional restoration in 6-OHDA lesioned rat model of Parkinson's disease.
