RESUMO

The working curve informs resin properties and print parameters for stereolithography, digital light processing, and other photopolymer additive manufacturing (PAM) technologies. First demonstrated in 1992, the working curve measurement of cure depth vs radiant exposure of light is now a foundational measurement in the field of PAM. Despite its widespread use in industry and academia, there is no formal method or procedure for performing the working curve measurement, raising questions about the utility of reported working curve parameters. Here, an interlaboratory study (ILS) is described in which 24 individual laboratories performed a working curve measurement on an aliquot from a single batch of PAM resin. The ILS reveals that there is enormous scatter in the working curve data and the key fit parameters derived from it. The measured depth of light penetration Dp varied by as much as 7x between participants, while the critical radiant exposure for gelation Ec varied by as much as 70x. This significant scatter is attributed to a lack of common procedure, variation in light engines, epistemic uncertainties from the Jacobs equation, and the use of measurement tools with insufficient precision. The ILS findings highlight an urgent need for procedural standardization and better hardware characterization in this rapidly growing field.

Introduction: The WHO 2021 data estimate that 2 million lives and 53 million disability-adjusted life-years were lost in 2019 due to exposures to selected chemicals. It is important to know the pattern and outcome of acute poisoning cases for proper planning, prevention and management. Knowing the pattern will also help in designing training modules for primary care physicians to make them aware about newer poisons and their management. Awareness regarding newer poisons consumed is necessary for early identification, initial management and timely referral to higher centres by primary care physicians. This study was performed to see the pattern and outcome of acute poisoning cases in North Indian population and various factors related to outcome. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted in department of medicine of a teaching institute in North India after approval by the Institutional Review Board. Patients admitted in the department during the study and fulfilling the inclusion criteria were enrolled in the study after obtaining consent. Results: A total of 417 patients with poisoning were recruited in the study. Out of 417 patients, majority were males (59.5%). Maximum number of patients were in the age group of 21-30 years (33.8%), and rural population (79.9%) was found to be more affected. Most of the patients were students and private employees. Most common types of poisoning were snakebite (n = 109, 26.1%), organophosphate (n = 49, 11.8%) and aluminium phosphide (n = 39, 9.3%). Out of 417 patients, 349 (83.69%) improved, while 68 (16.3%) expired. Requirement of ventilatory support was most commonly associated with aluminium phosphide poisoning (30.12%) followed by organophosphate poisoning (24.1%). Conclusion: Poisoning was more common in young males and more prevalent in rural population. Pesticides and snakebite were major causes of poisoning. Among suicidal cases, family conflict (problem/altercation with family members/marital discord) was main reason for the consumption of poison. There is need for creation of poison information centre along with separate toxicological units in tertiary care hospitals.

Additive manufacturing technologies are developed and utilized to manufacture complex, lightweight, functional, and non-functional components with optimized material consumption. Among them, vat polymerization-based digital light processing (DLP) exploits the polymerization of photocurable resins in the layer-by-layer production of three-dimensional objects. With the rapid growth of the technology in the last few years, DLP requires a rational design framework for printing process optimization based on the specific material and printer characteristics. In this work, we investigate the curing of pure photopolymers, as well as ceramic and metal suspensions, to characterize the material properties relevant to the printing process, such as penetration depth and critical energy. Based on the theoretical framework offered by the Beer-Lambert law for absorption and on experimental results, we define a printing space that can be used to rationally design new materials and optimize the printing process using digital light processing. The proposed methodology enables printing optimization for any material and printer combination, based on simple preliminary material characterization tests to define the printing space. Also, this methodology can be generalized and applied to other vat polymerization technologies.

Seed coat colour is an important trait in Indian mustard. Breeding for seed coat colour needs precise knowledge of mode of inheritance and markers linked to it. The present study was focussed on genetics and development of functional markers for seed coat colour. F1s (direct and reciprocal) and F2 populations were developed by crossing two contrasting parents for seed coat colour (DRMRIJ-31, brown seeded and RLC-3, yellow seeded). Phenotypic results have shown that the seed coat colour trait was under the influence of maternal effect and controlled by digenic-duplicate gene action. Further, Bju.TT8 homologs of both parents (DRMRIJ-31 and RLC-3) were cloned and sequenced. Sequencing results of Bju.TT8 homologs revealed that in RLC-3, gene Bju.ATT8 had an insertion of 1279bp in the 7th exon; whereas, gene Bju.BTT8 had an SNP (C→T) in the 7th exon. These two mutations were found to be associated with yellow seed coat colour. Using sequence information, functional markers were developed for both Bju.TT8 homologs, validated on F2 population and were found highly reliable with no recombination between the markers and the phenotype. Further, these markers were subjected to a germplasm assembly of Indian mustard, and their allelic combination for the seed coat colour genes has been elucidated. The comparative genomics of TT8 genes revealed high degree of similarity between and across the Brassica species, and the respective diploid progenitors in tetraploid Brassica species are the possible donors of TT8 homologs. This study will help in the marker-assisted breeding for seed coat colour, and aid in understanding seed coat colour genetics more precisely.

Tocopherol is vital for the nutritional value and stability of Indian mustard (Brassica juncea L. Czern and Coss) oil; nonetheless, the lack of information on genetic control is hampering its improvement. In this study, six populations (P1, P2, F1, F2, BC1P1, and BC1P2) of RLC3 × NPJ203 were evaluated in a family block design to evaluate the inheritance pattern, gene effects, and various other genetic parameters of tocopherol content (α, γ, and total), using generation mean analysis. The comparison of direct and reciprocal crosses indicated that the tocopherol content was not influenced by maternal inheritance. Negative directional heterosis showed that ATC, GTC, and TTC are governed by recessive genes. Potence ratio and degree of dominance highlighted an over-dominance type of gene interaction for GTC and TTC, whereas ATC was governed by epistatic interactions. Furthermore, the six-parameter model revealed a duplicate gene action for α-tocopherol content. Broad and narrow sense heritability coupled with genetic advances were high.

The response to selection in any crop improvement program depends on the degree of variance and heritability. The objective of the current study was to explain variance and heritability components in Indian mustard Brassica juncea (L). Czern & Coss to recognize promising genotypes for effective breeding. Two hundred and eighty-nine diverse accessions of Indian mustard belonging to four continents were analyzed for yield and yield-related traits (20 traits) over two seasons (2017-2018 and 2018-2019) using an alpha lattice design. The genetic variance was found to be significant (P ≤ 0.01) for the individual and under pooled analysis for all of the evaluated traits, demonstrating the presence of significant genetic variability in the diversity panel, which bids greater opportunities for utilizing these traits in future breeding programs. High heritability combined with high genetic advance as percent of mean and genotypic coefficient of variation was observed for flowering traits, plant height traits, seed size, and seed yield/plant; hence, a better genetic gain is expected upon the selection of these traits over subsequent generations. Both correlation and stepwise regression analysis indicated that the main shoot length, biological yield, total seed yield, plant height up to the first primary branch, seed size, total siliqua count, days to flowering initiation, plant height at maturity, siliquae on the main shoot, main shoot length, and siliqua length were the most significant contributory traits for seed yield/plant. Also, promising genotypes were identified among the diversity panel, which can be utilized as a donor to improve Indian mustard further. These results indicated a greater scope for improving seed yield per plant directly through a selection of genotypes having the parsimonious combination of these nine traits.

An unusual case of traumatic maculopathy following blunt trauma with a sugarcane stick is reported in a 12-year-old boy. An area of parafoveal exudates associated with decrease in visual acuity was observed in the affected eye of the patient. Baseline parameters related to the best-corrected visual acuity, visual fields, fundus photographs, fluorescein angiography, and macular optical coherence tomography were performed and the patient was observed for 6 months with conservative management. There was complete resolution of the exudates with commensurate increase in the best-corrected visual acuity over this period. This unusual presentation of traumatic maculopathy is discussed along with the role of optical coherence tomography in such cases.

RESUMO

Optic disc melanocytoma is a well-known clinical entity occurring as a deeply pigmented lesion on the optic nerve head. A 40-year-old man with a pigmented lesion overlying the left optic disc was evaluated with optical coherence tomography. The single high reflectance band from the anterior edge of the disc lesion with optical back shadowing behind on optical coherence tomography helped to pinpoint the diagnosis of the lesion as optic disc melanocytoma. Quantitative assessment of the mass with optical coherence tomography for its growth did not show any increase in size horizontally or vertically after 6 months. Optical coherence tomography is useful for obtaining the exact measurements of the mass lesion and may be used as a tool to follow the progress and growth pattern of the lesion.
