Objectives: Invasive fungal spondylodiscitis (IFSD) is rare and could be lethal in certain circumstances. The previous literature revealed limited data concerning its outcomes. This study aimed to establish a risk-scoring system to predict the one-year mortality rate of this disease. Methods: A total of 53 patients from a multi-centered database in Taiwan were included in this study. All the clinicopathological and laboratory data were retrospectively analyzed. Variables strongly related to one-year mortality were identified using a multivariate Cox proportional hazards model. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to express the performance of our IFSD scoring model. Results: Five strong predictors were included in the IFSD score: predisposing immunocompromised state, the initial presentation of either radiculopathy or myelopathy, initial laboratory findings of WBC > 12.0 or <0.4 103/µL, hemoglobin < 8 g/dL, and evidence of candidemia. One-year mortality rates for patients with IFSD scores of 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 were 0%, 16.7%, 56.3%, 72.7%, and 100%, respectively. The area under the curve of the ROC curve was 0.823. Conclusions: We developed a practical scoring model with easily obtained demographic, clinical, and laboratory parameters to predict the probability of one-year mortality in patients with IFSD. However, more large-scale and international validations would be necessary before this scoring model is commonly used.

PURPOSE: Advancement in all surgery continues to progress towards more minimally invasive surgical (MIS) approaches. One of the platform technologies which has helped drive this trend within spine surgery is the development of endoscopy; however, the limited anatomic view experienced when performing endoscopic spine surgery requires a significant learning curve. The use of intraoperative navigation has been adapted for endoscopic spine surgery, as this provides computer-reconstructed visual data presented in three dimensions, which can increase feasibility of this technique to more surgeons. METHODS: This paper will describe the principles, technical considerations, and applications of stereotactic navigation-guided endoscopic spine surgery. RESULTS: Full-endoscopic spine surgery has advanced in recent years such that it can be utilized in both decompressive and fusion surgeries. One of the major pitfalls to any minimally invasive surgery (including endoscopic) is that the limited surgical view can often complicate the surgery or confuse the surgeon, leading to longer operative times, higher risks, among others. This is the real utility to using navigation in conjunction with the endoscope-when registered correctly and utilized appropriately, navigated endoscopic spine surgery can take some of the guesswork out of the minimally invasive approach. CONCLUSIONS: Using navigation with endoscopy in spine surgery can potentially expand this technique to surgeons who have yet to master endoscopy as the assistance provided by the navigation can alleviate some of the complexities with anatomic understanding and surgical planning.

BACKGROUND: This meta-analysis compared the effects of intravenous Tranexamic acid (TXA) and a placebo on hemostasis, hospital course, and complications in adult patients undergoing various urologic surgeries. METHODS: The literature was extensively searched using various databases. The primary outcomes were standardized mean differences (SMDs) of intraoperative blood loss and odds ratios (ORs) of necessary blood product transfusion. The secondary outcomes included SMDs of operative time, SMDs of decreased hemoglobulin levels at 24 hours after surgery, and ORs of thromboembolic events. RESULTS: The meta-analysis included 13 randomized controlled trials (RCT) comprising 1814 participants in total. The SMD of intraoperative blood loss for TXA versus placebo was -0.705 (95% confidence interval [CI]: -1.113 to -0.297). The pooled ORs of transfusion in the TXA group compared with the placebo group was 0.426 (95% CI: 0.290-0.625). These findings indicated a significantly lower intraoperative blood loss and a reduced need for transfusion following intravenous TXA. The pooled ORs of thromboembolic events in the TXA group compared with the placebo group was 0.664 (95% CI: 0.146-3.024). CONCLUSIONS: Intravenous TXA can reduce intraoperative blood loss, decrease the need for transfusion, and shorten operative time, and it does not increase the risk of thromboembolic events.

BACKGROUND: One of the most severe complications of liposuction and fat grafting is pulmonary fat embolism (PFE). However, most healthcare workers are not familiar with PFE. We performed a systematic review to describe the details of PFE. METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE, and Google Scholar were searched up to October 2022. Further analysis focused on clinical, diagnostic, and outcome parameters. RESULTS: A total of 40 patients from 19 countries were included. Chest computed tomography (CT) yielded 100% accuracy in the diagnosis of PFE. More than 90% of the deceased died within 5 days after surgery, and in 69% of patients, onset of symptoms occurred within 24 h after surgery. The proportions of patients who required mechanical ventilation, had a cardiac arrest event, or died among all patients and among those whose onset of symptoms occurred within 24 h after surgery were 76%, 38%, and 34% versus 86%, 56%, and 54%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The earlier the onset of symptoms was, the more severe the clinical course was. Once a patient presents with PFE-related symptoms, surgery should be halted, supportive care initiated, and chest CT used to diagnose PFE. According to our review results, if a patient with PFE survives the initial episode without permanent sequelae, a complete recovery can be anticipated.

Endoscopic spine surgery (ESS) has evolved as a safe, effective, and efficient alternative for minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS). The innovation of full-endoscopic systems makes definitive decompression surgery through different approaches feasible. The approach can be determined according to the location of the target lesion or the surgeon's preference. During the past 2 decades, ESS has expanded its indications from lumbar to cervical spines. Except for decompression, endoscopy-assisted fusion surgery is also developing. However, ESS is still evolving and has a steep learning curve. The revolution of technologies and ESS techniques will enable surgeons to treat various spinal diseases more practically. In recent years, the application of the computer-assisted navigation system and augmented reality have reformed imaging quality and interpretation. The endoscopic rhizotomy techniques have opened a new way for MISS of chronic low back pain. This review introduces the current indications of ESS and its potential future expansion.

OBJECTIVE: Sacroiliac joint (SIJ) pain is a common cause of chronic low back pain. Full-endoscopic rhizotomy of lateral branches of dorsal rami innervating SIJ is a potential option for patients' refractory to medical treatment. The full-endoscopic rhizotomy is sometimes challenging under fluoroscopic guidance. This study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the navigation-assisted full-endoscopic rhizotomy for SIJ pain. METHODS: The study was a retrospective match-paired study that enrolled consecutive patients undergoing navigation-assisted full-endoscopic rhizotomy for SIJ pain. The patient demographics, clinical outcomes, and operative parameters of endoscopic rhizotomy were compared with conventional cooled radiofrequency ablation (RFA) treatment. RESULTS: The study enrolled 72 patients, including 36 patients in the endoscopic group. Thirty-six patients in the cooled RFA group were matched by age as the control. The follow-up time was at least 1 year. Patient characteristics were similar between the groups. The navigation-assisted endoscopic rhizotomy operation time was significantly longer than the cooled RFA. The visual analogue scale (VAS) for pain and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) significantly decreased after each treatment. However, the between-group comparison revealed that the VAS and ODI of the patients after endoscopic rhizotomy were significantly lower than those after the cooled RFA group. There were no postoperative complications in the study. CONCLUSION: Navigation-assisted full-endoscopic rhizotomy is an alternative to SIJ pain treatment. Integrating intraoperative navigation can ensure accurate full-endoscopic rhizotomy to provide better durability of pain relief than the cooled RFA.

OBJECTIVE: The ever-growing number of articles related to full-endoscopic spine surgery published in the last few decades presents a challenge which is perplexing and time-consuming in identifying the current research status. The study aims to identify and analyze the most cited works related to full-endoscopic decompression spine surgery, compare the articles published by different publishers and area, and show the current publication status of full-endoscopic research. METHODS: Using Bibliometrix, CiteSpace, and VOSviewer, we analyzed the bibliometric data selected from the Web of Science database between 1992 and 2022. Spine has the highest H-index with the most-cited journal in the field of full-endoscopic decompression spine surgery. China ranked as the most productive country, whereas the most cited with high H-index papers came from South Korea. For the author analysis, Yeung AT, Ruetten S, Hoogland T, Ahn Y, Choi G, and Mayer HM were the most impactful authors in the global and local citations. The most productive organization is Wooridul Spine Hospital. CONCLUSION: The bibliometric study showed a growing trend of research on full-endoscopic decompression spine surgery over the past 30 years. It has demonstrated that there is a significant increase in the number of authors, institutions, and internationally collaborated countries. However, the quality of studies is still low, and the lack of high-quality clinical evidence and the trend of general journal submissions has somewhat affected the quality of endoscopy journals in recent years.

OBJECTIVE: The study aims to assess the current development status of transforaminal full-endoscopic spine surgery (TFES) by exploring and analyzing the published literature to obtain an overview of this field and discover the evolution and emerging topics that are underrepresented. METHODS: Using Bibliometrix, CiteSpace, and VOSviewer, we analyzed the bibliometric data selected from the Web of Science Core Collection between January 2002 and November 2022. The descriptive and evaluative analyses of authors, institutes, countries, journals, keywords, and references are compiled. The quantity of research productivity was measured by the number of publications that were published. A quality indicator was thought to be the number of citations. In the bibliometric analysis of authors, areas, institutes, and references, we calculated and ranked the research impact by various metrics, such as the h-index and m-index. RESULTS: A total of 628 articles were identified in the field of TFES by the 18.73% annual growth rate of research on the subject from 2002 to 2022, constituting the documents are by 1961 authors affiliated with 661 institutions in 42 countries or regions and published in 117 journals. The USA (n = 0.20) has the highest international collaboration rate, South Korea has the highest H-index value (h = 33), and China is ranked as the most productive country (n = 348). Brown univ., Tongji univ., and Wooridul Spine represented the most productive institutes ranked by the number of publications. Wooridul Spine Hospital demonstrated the highest quality of paper publication. The Pain Physician had the highest h-index (n = 18), and the most cited journal with the earliest publication year in the area of FEDS is Spine (t = 1855). CONCLUSION: The bibliometric study showed a growing trend of research on transforaminal full-endoscopic spine surgery over the past 20 years. It has shown a significant increase in the number of authors, institutions, and international collaborating countries. South Korea, the United States, and China dominate the related areas. A growing body of evidence has revealed that TFES has leapfrogged from its infancy stage and gradually entered a mature development stage.

BACKGROUND: Sacroiliac joint (SIJ) pain is a common source of low back pain. Previously reported management strategies for this pain include conservative treatment, SIJ injection, radiofrequency denervation ablation, and SIJ fusion. Herein, we describe the use of biportal endoscopic radiofrequency ablation (BERA) to treat patients with low back pain. METHODS: We included 16 patients who underwent BERA from April 2018 to June 2020. We marked the S1, S2, and S3 foramina and the SIJ line under fluoroscopy. Skin entry points were positioned at 0.5 cm medial to the SIJ line and at the level of the S1 and S2 foramina. Under local anesthesia, we introduced a 30° arthroscope with a 4 mm diameter through the viewing portal; surgical instruments were inserted through another caudal working portal. We ablated the lateral branches of the S1-S3 foramina and L5 dorsal ramus, which were the sources of SIJ pain. RESULTS: Clinically relevant improvements in both visual analog scale and Oswestry Disability Index scores were noted at 1-, 6-, and 12-month follow-up time points after surgery. The overall patient satisfaction score was 89.1%. CONCLUSIONS: BERA for SIJ pain treatment has the advantage of directly identifying and ablating the innervating nerve to the joint. Through this technique, an expanded working angle can be obtained compared with traditional single-port endoscopy. Our study demonstrated promising preliminary results.

OBJECTIVE: Endoscopic lumbar discectomy has been an alternative for treating lumbar disc herniation. Evidence-based study for the benefit zone of full-endoscopic lumbar discectomy (FELD) is necessary. The study compared the complication risks between the FELD and open discectomy or microdiscectomy. METHODS: The literature search was from 4 online databases for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and cohort studies. The meta-analysis of different study designs was conducted separately. Complication rates were considered primary outcomes, and the recurrence and revision rates were considered secondary outcomes. RESULTS: Six RCTs and thirteen cohort studies met the eligibility criteria. The meta-analysis was conducted separately. From the pooled RCT meta-analysis, the overall complication rates of FELD and open discectomy/microdiscectomy were 5.5% and 10.4%, respectively. The moderate-quality evidence suggested that FELD had a lower risk of overall complications (risk ratio [RR] = 0.55, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.31-0.98). There was no significant difference in specific complications and recurrence. The analysis of cohort studies revealed no significant difference in overall complications, but there was significant heterogeneity in the results. The risk of dural injury was significantly lower for FELD (RR = 0.46, 95% CI = 0.22-0.96). The pooled meta-analysis from cohort studies suggested a higher risk of transient dysesthesia (RR = 3.70, 95% CI = 1.54-8.89), residual fragment (RR = 5.29, 95% CI = 2.67-10.45), and revision surgeries (RR = 1.53, 95% CI = 1.12-2.08) for FELD. CONCLUSIONS: The current evidence showed a lower risk of overall complications for FELD. The quality of evidence was moderate to low, and the risk of bias from the primary literature should be concerned.

Background and Objectives: We developed a machine learning algorithm to analyze trauma-related data and predict the mortality and chronic care needs of patients with trauma. Materials and Methods: We recruited admitted patients with trauma during 2015 and 2016 and collected their clinical data. Then, we subjected this database to different machine learning techniques and chose the one with the highest accuracy by using cross-validation. The primary endpoint was mortality, and the secondary endpoint was requirement for chronic care. Results: Data of 5871 patients were collected. We then used the eXtreme Gradient Boosting (xGBT) machine learning model to create two algorithms: a complete model and a short-term model. The complete model exhibited an 86% recall for recovery, 30% for chronic care, 67% for mortality, and 80% for complications; the short-term model fitted for ED displayed an 89% recall for recovery, 25% for chronic care, and 41% for mortality. Conclusions: We developed a machine learning algorithm that displayed good recall for the healthy recovery group but unsatisfactory results for those requiring chronic care or having a risk of mortality. The prediction power of this algorithm may be improved by implementing features such as age group classification, severity selection, and score calibration of trauma-related variables.

PURPOSE: Full-endoscopic spine surgery for degenerative lumbar diseases is growing in popularity and has shown favourable outcomes. Lumbar endoscopic unilateral laminotomy for bilateral decompression (LE-ULBD) has been used to treat lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS). However, studies comparing LE-ULBD to microscopic ULBD are lacking. This study compared the clinical efficacy and radiological outcomes between the LE-ULBD and microscopic ULBD. METHODS: The study retrospectively enrolled patients undergoing either LE-ULBD or microscopic ULBD for spinal stenosis at the L4-L5 level. The demographic data, operative details, radiological images, clinical outcomes, and complications of patients from the two groups were compared through matched-pairs analysis. The minimum follow-up duration was 24 months. RESULTS: There were 93 patients undergoing either LE-ULBD (n = 42) or microscopic ULBD (n = 51). The patient demographics were similar between the two groups. The LE-ULBD group had significantly less estimated blood loss, less analgesic use, and shorter hospitalization duration (P < .05). The endoscopic group had a significantly lower visual analog scale for back pain at all follow-up intervals compared with the microscopic group (P < .05). There were no significant differences in leg pain or Oswestry Disability Index. The cross-section area of the spinal canal was significantly wider after microscopic ULBD. There were no significant differences in post-operative degenerative changes in disc height, translational motion, or facet preservation rate. CONCLUSIONS: LE-ULBD is comparable in clinical and radiological outcomes with enhanced recovery for single-level LSS. The endoscopic approach might further minimize tissue injury and enhance post-operative recovery.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the association between the presence of bacteremia and increase in the requirement for intensive care in adult patients with urinary tract infection (UTI). The study also analyzed the differences in clinical features between patients with versus without bacteremia. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective screening of the medical records of adult patients admitted during a 4-month period at a single medical center. We excluded patients with concomitant infections and patients whose urine and blood samples were not collected in the emergency department (ED). The included patients were allocated to two groups-bacteremia and nonbacteremia groups-according to the blood culture results for samples collected in the ED. RESULTS: The study cohort comprised 637 patients, including 158 (24.8%) patients in the bacteremia group and 479 (75.2%) patients in the nonbacteremia group. Compared with the patients in the nonbacteremia group, those in the bacteremia group satisfied more systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) criteria; they had a higher white cell count, C-reactive protein level, and sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) scores; and had a greater requirement for intensive care (bacteremia vs. nonbacteremia; SIRS: 79.1% vs. 49.9%, p = 0.000; leukocytosis: 68.2% vs. 57.6%, p = 0.000; elevation of CRP: 96.2% vs. 78.6%, p = 0.000; SOFA: 39.2% vs. 23.2%, p = 0.000; requirement for intensive care: 13.9% vs. 4.4%, p = 0.000, respectively). According to the results of multivariate logistic regression, bacteremia and sepsis were independent factors associated with the requirement for intensive care. CONCLUSIONS: Bacteremia increased the requirement for intensive care in patients with UTI. Physicians can identify bacteremia using inflammatory markers, the SIRS criteria, and SOFA scores.

Spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) in the brain parenchyma accounts for 16.1% of all stroke types in Taiwan. It is responsible for high morbidity and mortality in some underlying causes. The objective of this study is to discover the predicting factors focusing on in-hospital outcomes of patients with spontaneous supratentorial ICH. Between June 2014 and October 2018, there were a total of 159 patients with spontaneous supratentorial ICH ranging from 27 to 91 years old in our institution. Twenty-three patients died during hospitalization, whereas 59 patients had an extended length of stay of >30 days. The outcomes were measured by inpatient death, length of stay, and activity of daily living (ADL). Both univariate and multivariate binary logistic regression, as well as multivariate linear regression, were used for statistical analysis. Multivariate binary linear regression analysis showed the larger hematoma in initial computed tomography scan of >30 cm3 (odds ratio [OR] = 2.505, P = .013) and concurrent in-hospital infection (OR = 4.173, P = .037) were both statistically related to higher mortality. On the other hand, in-hospital infection (≥17.41 days, P = .000) and surgery (≥11.23 days, P = .001) were correlated with a longer length of stay. Lastly, drastically poor change of ADL (ΔADL <-30) was associated with larger initial ICH (>30 cc, OR = 2.915, P = .049), in-hospital concurrent infection (OR = 4.695, P = .01), and not receiving a rehabilitation training program (OR = 3.473, P = .04). The results of this study suggest that age, prothrombin, initial Glasgow Coma Scale, computed tomography image, location of the lesion, and surgery could predict the mortality and morbidity of the spontaneous ICH, which cannot be reversed at the time of occurrence. However, effective control of international normalized ratio level, careful prevention against infection, and the aid of rehabilitation programs might be important factors toward a decrease of inpatient mortality rate, the length of stay, and ADL recovery.

ABSTRACT: A significant number of patients suffers from refractory trigeminal neuralgia (TN) after receiving microvascular decompression (MVD) or other neuro-destructive procedure such as gamma knife radiosurgery (GKRS). This study aims to demonstrate a remediable, reproducible approach to treating refractory pain effectively by percutaneous radiofrequency trigeminal rhizotomy (RF-TR).A total of 392 patients with TN were treated by RF-TR during the past 10 years. Among these patients, 48 cases who had received either MVD, GKRS alone, or a combination of both were assigned to group A. Those who had not received any form of treatment (125 patients) or failed to respond medically (130 patients) were assigned as the control group (group B). All the RF-TR were performed by a single surgeon with the aid of intraoperative computed tomography (iCT)-based neuronavigation with magnetic resonance (MR) image fusion. The outcome measure was the numerical rating scale (NRS) expressed subjectively by patients. The paired Student t test and the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) were used for statistical analysis.In group A, 21 of 24 patients (88%) had significant improvement (NRS change ≥5) in facial pain after RF-TR. The average NRS score was 9.75 ±â€Š0.53 before the procedure and 1.92 ±â€Š3.35 post-treatment (significant NRS decrease [P = .000]). On the other hand, in group B, 226 of 255 patients (89%) also had dramatic amelioration of facial pain after RF-TR. The average NRS score was 9.46 ±â€Š0.69 before the procedure and 1.62 ±â€Š2.85 post-treatment (7.84 ±â€Š2.82 in NRS decrease [P = .008]). By using a univariate ANCOVA, no statistical significance was found in NRS score improvement between the two groups.Repeated MVD and GKRS for refractory TN may be less desirable due to a greater risk of mortality (up to 0.8%) and morbidity (4% of serious complications). Conversely, RF-TR administration with the novel navigation technique by using iCT and MR image fusion is free from any remarkable and irreversible morbidities. In this study, RF-TR not only provided an alternative and effective strategy if TN recurred but also resulted in the same NRS score improvement regardless of the status of prior treatment.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) remains a critical public health challenge. Although studies have found several prognostic factors for TBI, a useful early predictive tool for mortality has yet to be developed in the triage of the emergency room. This study aimed to use machine learning algorithms of artificial intelligence (AI) to develop predictive models for TBI patients in the emergency room triage. We retrospectively enrolled 18,249 adult TBI patients in the electronic medical records of three hospitals of Chi Mei Medical Group from January 2010 to December 2019, and undertook the 12 potentially predictive feature variables for predicting mortality during hospitalization. Six machine learning algorithms including logistical regression (LR) random forest (RF), support vector machines (SVM), LightGBM, XGBoost, and multilayer perceptron (MLP) were used to build the predictive model. The results showed that all six predictive models had high AUC from 0.851 to 0.925. Among these models, the LR-based model was the best model for mortality risk prediction with the highest AUC of 0.925; thus, we integrated the best model into the existed hospital information system for assisting clinical decision-making. These results revealed that the LR-based model was the best model to predict the mortality risk in patients with TBI in the emergency room. Since the developed prediction system can easily obtain the 12 feature variables during the initial triage, it can provide quick and early mortality prediction to clinicians for guiding deciding further treatment as well as helping explain the patient's condition to family members.

Smartphones are currently extensively used worldwide, and advances in hardware quality have engendered improvements in smartphone image quality, which is occasionally comparable to the quality of medical imaging systems. This paper proposes two algorithms for pupil recognition: a stateful-service-based pupil recognition mechanism and color component low-pass filtering algorithm. The PRSSM algorithm can determine pupil diameters in images captured in indoor natural light environments, and the CCLPF algorithm can determine pupil diameters in those captured outdoors under sunlight. The PRSSM algorithm converts RGB colors into the hue saturation value color space and performs adaptive thresholding, morphological operations, and contour detection for effectively analyzing the diameter of the pupil. The CCLPF algorithm derives the average matrix for the red components of eye images captured in outdoor environments. It also performs low-pass filtering, morphological and contour detection operations, and rule-of-thumb correction. This algorithm can effectively analyze pupil diameter in outdoor natural light. Traditional ruler-based measurements of pupil diameter were used as the reference to verify the accuracy of the PRSSM and CCLPF algorithms and to compare their accuracy with that of the other algorithm. The errors in pupil diameter data were smaller for the PRSSM and CCLPF algorithms than for the other algorithm.

ABSTRACT: The incidence of geriatric trauma is increasing due to the growing elderly population. Healthcare providers require a global perspective to differentiate critical factors that might alter patients' prognosis.We retrospectively reviewed all adult patients admitted to a trauma center during a 4-year period. We identified 655 adult trauma patients aged from 18 to 64 (nongeriatric group) and 273 trauma patients ≥65 years (geriatric group). Clinical data were collected and compared between the 2 groups.The geriatric group had a higher incidence of trauma and higher Injury Severity Scores than did the nongeriatric group. Fewer geriatric patients underwent surgical treatment (all patients: geriatric vs nongeriatric: 65.9% vs 70.7%; patients with severe trauma: geriatric vs nongeriatric: 27.6% vs 44.5%). Regarding prognosis, the geriatric group exhibited higher mortality rate and less need for long-term care (geriatric vs nongeriatric: mortality: 5.5% vs 1.8%; long-term care: 2.2% vs 5.0%).We observed that geriatric patients had higher trauma incidence and higher trauma mortality rate. Aging is a definite predictor of poor outcomes for trauma patients. Limited physiological reserves and preference for less aggressive treatment might be the main reasons for poor outcomes in elderly individuals.

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic lumbar interbody fusion has become an emerging technique. Some researchers have reported the technique of percutaneous endoscopic transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion. We propose percutaneous endoscopic posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PE-PLIF) as an alternative approach. The purpose of this study was to assess the clinical efficacy of PE-PLIF by comparing percutaneous endoscopic and open posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF). METHODS: Thirty patients were enrolled in each group. Demographic data, perioperative data, and radiological parameters were collected prospectively. The clinical outcomes were evaluated by visual analog scale (VAS) and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) scores. RESULTS: The background data were comparable between the two groups. The mean operation time was longer in the PE-PLIF group. The PE-PLIF group showed benefits in less blood loss and shorter hospital stay. VAS and ODI scores significantly improved in both groups. However, the VAS score of low-back pain was lower in the PE-PLIF group. The satisfaction rate was 96.7% in both groups. The radiological outcomes were similar in both groups. In the PE-PLIF group, the fusion rate was 93.3%, and the cage subsidence rate was 6.7%; in the open PLIF group, the fusion and cage subsidence rates were 96.7% and 16.7%. There were minor complications in one patient in the PE-PLIF group and two in the open PLIF group. CONCLUSIONS: The current study revealed that PE-PLIF is safe and effective compared with open PLIF. In addition, this minimally invasive technique may enhance postoperative recovery by reducing tissue damage and blood loss.
