RESUMO

PURPOSE: We investigated the optimal number of valid measurements (VMs) for the attenuation coefficient (AC) to assess liver steatosis using attenuation imaging (ATI) and explored factors that may affect AC measurement in patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 139 patients with MAFLD who underwent ATI and liver biopsy were enrolled. Hepatic steatosis was graded as S0-3 according to the SAF scoring system. The AC values from 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7 VMs were compared with the degree of liver steatosis. The correlation between AC values from different VMs was analyzed. The diagnostic performance of AC from different VMs at each steatosis grade was compared. The factors related to AC were identified using linear regression analysis. RESULTS: The mean AC values from 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7 VMs were not significantly different between grades S0-3 (p=n.s. for all). Bland-Altman analysis showed the mean difference in AC values of 3 VMs and 7 VMs was 0.003 dB/cm/MHz, which was smaller compared with 2 VMs, and close to 5 VMs. The intraclass correlation coefficients of AC were all > 0.90 among different VM groups. AC values from different VMs all significantly predicted steatosis grade ≥S1, ≥S2, and S3 without significant statistical differences (p=n.s. for all). The multivariate analysis showed that the hepatic steatosis grade and triglyceride level were factors independently associated with AC. CONCLUSION: Three valid measurements of AC may be adequate to ensure the accuracy and reproducibility of hepatic steatosis assessment. The degree of liver steatosis and the triglyceride level significantly affected AC values.

RESUMO

An all-in-one therapy for cooperatively fighting cancer, infection and boosting wound repair is exceedingly demanded for patients with advanced superficial cancers or after surgical intervention to avoid multiple drug abuse and resultant adverse effects. Here, the ultrasound-activated nanosonosensitizer PHMP that integrated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) into the Pd-catalyzed hydrogenated mesoporous titanium dioxide (PHM) was dexterously designed for combined therapy of cancer and infected wound based on oxygen/sulfate dual-radical nanotherapy. Firstly, the PHM with single crystal structure and abundant oxygen deficiencies exhibited excellent ultrasound-excited reactive oxygen species (ROS) production for enhanced sonodynamic therapy (SDT) under the support of Pd nanozyme-mediated O2 supply. Simultaneously, the physically targeted ultrasound irradiation effectively transformed PMS loaded in the hollow cavities into distinct sulfate radical (•SO4-) with longer half-life and stronger oxidation, which remarkably enhanced the therapeutic efficacy of PHM-mediated SDT for cancer and bacteria. In addition, by embedding PHMP into the hydrogel, the enrichment of PHMP in the focal site was guaranteed, and meanwhile a moist and ventilated environment was created to speed up wound repair. The study broadens the potential of •SO4- in the therapeutic fields and contributes a simple and appealing tactic for the comprehensive treatment of cancer, infection and wound repair.

RESUMO

Background: Procyanidins have antioxidative properties that may protect against age-related brain oxidative stress. Previous studies indicated that procyanidin-rich foods could improve cognitive function and prevent neurodegenerative diseases. This study hypothesized that grape seed procyanidins extract (GSPE) would have a favorable effect on cognitive function in elderly people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Methods: A community-based, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted. Participants aged 60 years or older with MCI were randomly assigned into the GSPE group (n = 35, 320 mg/d) or placebo group (n = 36), and received capsules for 6 months. Cognitive function was assessed using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment Scale (MoCA). The change in MoCA scores between groups were tested by the time ✕ treatment interaction in mixed-design ANOVA. Results: After 6 months of intervention, the MoCA score was higher than the baseline both in the intervention group and placebo control group, while the there was no significant difference for mean change in MoCA score from baseline between the intervention group and the placebo group (2.35 ± 3.20 vs. 1.28 ± 2.93, P = 0.192). Conclusions: Present study showed that 6-month supplementation with GSPE did not significantly improve cognitive function in subjects with MCI. Further investigations regarding the longer-term intervention effect of procyanidins extract on mild or moderate cognitive disorders are needed.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between adherence to healthy dietary patterns, such as Mediterranean dietary pattern(MED), dietary approaches to stop hypertension(DASH), Mediterranean-DASH intervention for neurodegenerative delay with cognitive disorders(MIND), and the incidence of cognitive disorders. METHODS: Prospective studies on the association of MED, DASH and MIND with cognitive disorders in Chinese and English literatures were retrieved from PubMed, Wanfang, CNKI and VIP databases by title/abstract retrieval strategy from database establishment to February 28, 2022. Relative risk and its 95% confidence intervals were extracted to calculated the pooled effect and dose-response relationship. Heterogeneity was calculated by using Q test and I~2, and publication bias were analyzed by funnel plot, Begg's test and Egger's test. RESULTS: Totally, 124 977 participants and 15 studies about the relationship between healthy dietary patterns and cognitive impairment diseases were included in this study. Compared with the lower adherence group, the relative risks of cognitive disorders were 0.84(95%CI 0.84-0.97) for participants with higher adherence to MED, 0.79(95%CI 0.79-1.00) for participants with higher adherence to DASH, 0.48(95%CI 0.32-0.71) for participants with higher adherence to MIND, respectively. Subgroup analysis showed that the risk of mild cognitive impairment was 0.76(95%CI 0.65-0.90) for participants with higher adherence to MED, and 0.63(95%CI 0.48-0.82) for DASH. No significant association were observed in the relationship of MED, DASH with dementia. Different scoring method for dietary patterns, dietary survey method, study area, follow-up time and sample size might be the main sources of heterogeneity. CONCLUSION: Higher adherence to MED, DASH and MIND were associated with lower risk of cognitive disorders. MED and DASH were associated with a reduced risk of mild cognitive impairment rather than dementia.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) induced the majority number of dementia patients. The prevalence of MCI in China varied across studies with different screening tools and diagnostic criteria. OBJECTIVE: A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to estimate the pooled MCI prevalence among the population aged 55 years and older in China. METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE, CNKI, Wanfang, CQVIP, and CBMdisc were searched for studies on prevalence of MCI among Chinese elderly between January 1, 1980, and February 10, 2020. The quality assessment was conducted via external validity, internal validity, and informativity, the pooled prevalence was calculated through the random-effect model, and the homogeneity was evaluated by Cochran's Q test and I2. RESULTS: Fifty-three studies with 123,766 subjects were included. The pooled prevalence of MCI among Chinese elderly was 15.4% (95% CI: 13.5-17.4%). Subgroup analyses indicated that the prevalence calculated with different screening tools was 20.2% (95% CI: 15.1-25.9%) for Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and 13.0% (95% CI: 10.7-15.5%) for Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). According to different diagnostic criteria, the prevalence was 14.8% (95% CI: 12.2-17.6%) for Petersen criteria, 15.0% (95% CI: 12.7-17.5%) for DSM-IV, and 21.2% (95% CI: 17.5-25.2%) for Chinese Expert Consensus on Cognitive Impairment (CECCI). Besides, women, older adults, illiterate people, rural residents, and those who lived with unhealthy lifestyles and morbidity showed higher prevalence. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of MCI in China was 15.4%, which varied by demographics, lifestyles, morbidity, screening tools, and diagnostic criteria. In further studies, screening tools and diagnosis criteria should be considered when estimating MCI prevalence.

RESUMO

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between sleep structure and amnesic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) in patients with insomnia disorder. METHODS: A total of 256 patients with insomnia disorder were diagnosed by neurologists, 45 of whom were diagnosed with aMCI according to the Petersen criteria, and 45 participants with intact cognition were chosen as controls matched for age and education. A case-control study was conducted to compare sleep structure between aMCI and control patients with insomnia disorder. We evaluated self-reported sleep problems by the Insomnia Severity Index and objective sleep features by polysomnography. Logistic regression models were used to estimate the associations between sleep parameters and aMCI in patients with insomnia disorder. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in Insomnia Severity Index scores between the aMCI and control groups. In the logistic regression after adjustment for covariates, people with a longer sleep duration (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 0.56, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.36-0.89), greater sleep efficiency (aOR = 0.50, 95% CI: 0.32-0.77), and a higher percentage of total sleep time in stage 3 of non-rapid eye movement sleep (N3%) (aOR = 0.02, 95% CI: 0.01-0.15) have a lower relative probability of having aMCI. By contrast, higher N1% (aOR = 2.28, 95% CI: 1.36-3.82) and wake after sleep onset (aOR = 1.31, 95% CI: 1.11-1.55) may be risk factors for aMCI in patients with insomnia. CONCLUSIONS: In patients with insomnia disorder, sleep duration, sleep fragmentation, sleep efficiency, N1% and N3% were independently associated with the presence of aMCI. In the clinical setting, if patients with insomnia show much more serious abnormalities in these sleep indices, clinicians should pay attention to their cognitive function. In-depth research would also be worthwhile to elaborate the causality between sleep and cognitive decline.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Chronic liver disease is an important cause of liver failure and death worldwide, and liver fibrosis is a common pathological process of most chronic liver diseases. There still lacks a useful tool for evaluating liver fibrosis progression precisely and non-invasively. The purpose of this study was to explore the use of ultrasound radio frequency (RF) signals combined with deep learning approach to evaluate the degree of liver fibrosis quantitatively. METHODS: In this study, by extracting the output of deep learning models as a prediction value, a quantitative liver fibrosis prediction method was achieved based on the bidirectional long short-term memory (Bi-LSTM) network to analyze radio frequency (RF) signals. The dataset consisted of 160 sets of ultrasound RF signals of rat livers, including five fibrosis stages 0-4, upon pathological diagnosis. In total, 150 sets of RF signals were used to train four deep learning classification models, the output of which contained quantitative information. In each training stage of the four models, a large number of signal segments were extracted from the 150 sets and divided randomly into training and validation sets in a ratio of 80:20. Ten sets of RF data using the gold standard of quantitative fibrosis parameter (q-FP) of liver tissues were left for independent testing. To validate the proposed method, correlation analysis was carried out between q-FP and the quantitative prediction results based on the independent test data. RESULTS: The accuracy of the four deep learning networks using the training and validation data was above 0.83 and 0.80, and the corresponding areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves were higher than 0.95 and 0.93, respectively. For the quantitative analysis in the independent test set, the determination coefficient, R2, of the linear regression analysis between the quantitative prediction results and q-FP was above 0.93. liver fibrosis is a common pathological process of most chronic liver diseases. CONCLUSIONS: This study indicates that a prediction system based on ultrasound RF signals and a deep learning approach is promising for realizing quantitative and visualized diagnosis of liver fibrosis, which would be of great value in monitoring liver fibrosis non-invasively.

RESUMO

Objectives: This study aims to explore the differences of sleep structure between patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) and elderly people with normal cognition, which will help to provide evidence for the relationship between sleep disturbances and cognitive impairment. Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted on the literature on sleep parameters obtained by polysomnography or actigraphy in patients with aMCI. The PubMed and EMBASE databases were searched up to April 2020. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were established according to evidence-based medicine methods, and data of all eligible studies were meta-analyzed using the Review Manager 5.3 software. Results: Among the 1,171 literature articles on sleep structure of patients with MCI, eight case-control studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in this meta-analysis. A total of 278 subjects were included, of which 103 were patients with aMCI and 175 were elderly people with normal cognition. The results showed that sleep efficiency (SE) and slow wave sleep (SWS) of patients with aMCI were significantly lower than those of healthy elderly people. Compared with the control group, the percentage of stage 1 of non-rapid eye movement (N1%) in the aMCI patients group increased, and the percentage of stage 2 of non-rapid eye movement (N2%) decreased. Conclusions: Patients with aMCI may experience more severe sleep disturbances than normal cognitive elderly people. There were specific changes, especially in SE and SWS, in the sleep structure of patients with aMCI when compared to those with normal cognition.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Online information on electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) may influence people's perception and use of e-cigarettes. Websites with information on e-cigarettes in the Chinese language have not been systematically assessed. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess and compare the types and credibility of Web-based information on e-cigarettes identified from Google (in English) and Baidu (in Chinese) search engines. METHODS: We used the keywords vaping or e-cigarettes to conduct a search on Google and the equivalent Chinese characters for Baidu. The first 50 unique and relevant websites from each of the two search engines were included in this analysis. The main characteristics of the websites, credibility of the websites, and claims made on the included websites were systematically assessed and compared. RESULTS: Compared with websites on Google, more websites on Baidu were owned by manufacturers or retailers (15/50, 30% vs 33/50, 66%; P<.001). None of the Baidu websites, compared to 24% (12/50) of Google websites, were provided by public or health professional institutions. The Baidu websites were more likely to contain e-cigarette advertising (P<.001) and less likely to provide information on health education (P<.001). The overall credibility of the included Baidu websites was lower than that of the Google websites (P<.001). An age restriction warning was shown on all advertising websites from Google (15/15) but only on 10 of the 33 (30%) advertising websites from Baidu (P<.001). Conflicting or unclear health and social claims were common on the included websites. CONCLUSIONS: Although conflicting or unclear claims on e-cigarettes were common on websites from both Baidu and Google search engines, there was a lack of online information from public health authorities in China. Unbiased information and evidence-based recommendations on e-cigarettes should be provided by public health authorities to help the public make informed decisions regarding the use of e-cigarettes.

RESUMO

The aim of this study is to evaluate the age related changes of T lymphocyte subsets in C57BL/6 mice and immune function. Multi-color immunofluorescence techniques that were used to analyse relative numbers of T lymphocyte subsets include CD4+, CD8+, naive and memory CD4+ and CD8+, CD8+CD28+ T cells in peripheral blood of C57BL/6 mice from different age groups (Group I: 2 months old; Group II: 7 months old; Group III: 21 months old); Splenocytes isolated from different group mice were stimulated with Con A to evaluate the proliferative ability. Compared with group I, group II had a significant reduction in the percentage of CD4+, naive CD4+ and CD8+ T cells and an increase in the percentage of CD8+ T cells, while group III had a significant reduction in the percentage of CD4+, naive CD4+ and CD8+ T cells and increase in the percentage of CD8+, memory CD4+ and CD8+ T cells in peripheral blood. Compared with group II, group III had a significant reduction in the percentage of naive CD8+ T cells and increase in the percentage of memory CD4+ and CD8+, CD8+CD28+ T cells in peripheral blood. The T lymphocyte proliferation in vitro showed that groups II and III had a lower proliferative capacity than group I, between groups II and III, there was not a significant difference. We provide relative values for the T lymphocyte subsets in the different age groups of C57BL/6 mice. The immune system began aging at 7 months old in C57BL/6 mice under a specific pathogen free environment.

RESUMO

1-Alkyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ionic liquids ([Cnmim] Cl, n=4, 6, 8) were prepared. The ionic liquid was then mixed with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to form an absorbent. The Hg(0) removal performance of the absorbent was investigated in a gas/liquid scrubber using simulated flue gas. It was found that the ionic liquid/H2O2 mixture was an excellent absorbent and could be used to remove Hg(0) from flue gas. When the mass ratio of H2O2 to ionic liquid was 0.5, the absorbent showed high Hg(0) removal efficiency (up to 98%). The Hg(0) removal efficiency usually increased with the absorption temperature, while decreased with the increase of alkyl chain length in ionic liquid molecule. The Hg(0) removal mechanism involved with Hg(0) oxidation by H2O2 and Hg(2+) transfer from aqueous phase to ionic liquid phase.
