RESUMO

Medical students' attitudes toward psychiatry before and after their final (sixth) year psychiatric clerkship at a large psychiatric hospital were measured. We anticipated that exposure to severe, chronic psychiatric illness would affect student attitudes, and we undertook this study to investigate the direction and parameters of attitude change. However, no significant change in attitude was found. Variables considered included the students' interest in a career in psychiatry, their perception of the adequacy of their psychiatric training, their final examination results, and the gender of students and preceptors, none of which were found to correlate with attitudes.

RESUMO

The aim of the study was to establish the current and desired levels of staffing and funding of the 52 consultation-liaison (C-L) psychiatry training units in Australian and New Zealand general hospitals. Administration of a questionnaire and follow-up verification provided data on referral rates, existing and preferred staffing levels, and staff workloads. The referral rates and staffing levels in most cases fall below those quoted for Europe and the USA, and those considered optimal by the respondents. This, together with the large variation in referral rates and workload, has implications for the type of clinical activity conducted and quality of the training experience in different units.

RESUMO

To assess the long-term effects of cancer treatment and consequences of cure, 102 index cancer cases were compared with 95 neighbourhood controls of similar age and sex and with 78 cardiac controls. The quality of life experienced by these three groups was examined using multiple instruments with proven psychometric properties. All the major quality of life domains (physical, psychological and social) were covered. The findings revealed that the index cases were similar to their neighbours in areas of subjective well-being. However, the index cases exhibited more sexual dysfunction, were more conscientious, determined and emotionally disciplined, and applied the defence mechanisms of displacement and reaction formation more often than the neighbourhood controls. The cardiac controls were older, more anxious, more conventional/less imaginative and used suppression as a defence mechanism to a greater degree than the index cases. In conclusion, young adult cancer survivors enjoy a quality of life similar to their neighbours, whereas coronary bypass survivors adjust less well psychosocially.

RESUMO

The accepted animal toxicity studies indicate that the ganglioside mixture extracted and purified from the bovine brain cortex (Cronassial) is without detectable toxicity. It did not induce any adverse effects on any of the characteristics of reproduction and it is not antigenic.

RESUMO

The administration of a new piperidine antispasmodic agent (HSR-902) to the dog by the oral and intravenous routes, induced clinical signs attributable to parasympathetic blockage. The only significant toxicological finding was rarefied appearance and enlargement of the hepatocytes at the high dose level (50 mg/kg/day); this was shown to be reversible.

RESUMO

The i.v administration of lentinan to the Beagle dog induced changes in the cytoplasm of macrophagic cells in the liver, spleen, kidney, lungs, lymph nodes, small intestine. Electron-lucent or filamentous inclusions were demonstrated in the liver, kidney and spleen. A dose level of 0.5 mg/kg/day was without adverse effect.

RESUMO

Dibekacin sulphate (DKB), a new aminoglycoside antibiotic developed on the theory of bacterial resistance, was given by intravenous injection to groups of female Beagle dogs at dosages of 2.5, 5.0, 10.0 or 25.0 mg/kg/day for 13 weeks. Physiological saline was given as a control. Some dogs given 5.0 or 10.0 mg/kg/day were retained undosed for a further 5 weeks in order to assess recovery. Premature deaths from acute renal tubular nephrosis occurred in dogs given 25.0 and 10.0 mg/kg/day. Dogs which survived treatment at 10.0 mg/kg/day showed marked elevation of circulating urea and creatinine concentrations after 4 weeks' treatment but thereafter the increases became less obvious. Varying degrees of renal cortical tubular dilatation, basophilia, degeneration or necrosis were seen in the kidneys of all dogs examined after 13 weeks treatment although no clinical impairment of renal function was detectable at dosages up to 5.0 mg/kg/day. These changes had essentially regressed in dogs examined 5 weeks after the last dose of DKB at 5.0 mg/kg/day. All the adverse clinical and histological effects noted, following any dose level of DKB tested, could be attributed to renal changes.

RESUMO

A number of instances have been reported in the scientific literature in which acute intoxication with halogenated oxyquinolines has led in some species to convlusions, often followed by death. The toxicity of repeated doses of clioquinol has been investigated extensively in the dog. The clinical syndrome induced in this species is characterized by anorexia, weight loss, extremem muscle weakness and emaciation. In some animals surviving this impairment of condition for several weeks, neuropathy of the central nervous system, but not of the peripheral nerves ensued. It is suggested that these toxicological manifestations are less dependent on the dose-level than on the degree of absorption. Some suggestions regarding the aetiology of the lesions are made.

RESUMO

Lindane was administered to male and female Beagle dogs at dietary levels of 25, 50 and 100 ppm for 104 weeks, and of 200 ppm for 32 weeks. One death at 25 ppm and one at 200 ppm were not considered to be related to the test compound. At 100 and 200 ppm, SAP levels were raised and the livers were dark, friable and slightly enlarged but without any detected histopathological change. HVSA changes, possibly indicative of non-specific neuronal irritation, were recorded in the EEG tracings at 200 but not at 100 ppm. There were no other indications of an adverse effect of lindane. The negative findings at 50 ppm are consistent with a 'no-effect level' for this species of 1.25 mg/kg body weight, comparable with for the rat, and with proposed human ADI of 0.0125 mg/kg body weight.

RESUMO

When methyl testosterone was administered orally to beagle dogs at dosage levels of 2, 4 and 6 mg/kg per day for 27 weeks, hepatotoxicity was induced. The change induced was characterized by enlargement of periportal hepatocytes and the presence of haemosiderin within macrophages. There was some evidence of recovery over a 13-week period.

RESUMO

When clioquinol was administered to Beagle dogs, disturbances in gait which were associated with abnormal reflexes and reactions, were seen in animals receiving 250 and 400 mg/kg body weight per day. Histopathological examination of the central nervous system (CNS) showed pathological change in the posterior columns of the spinal cord.
