RESUMO

The interplay of kinetic electron physics and atomic processes in ultrashort laser-plasma interactions provides a comprehensive understanding of the impact of the electron energy distribution on plasma properties. Notably, nonequilibrium electrons play a vital role in collisional ionization, influencing ionization degrees and spectra. This paper introduces a computational model that integrates the physics of kinetic electrons and atomic processes, utilizing a Boltzmann equation for nonequilibrium electrons and a collisional-radiative model for atomic state populations. The model is used to investigate the influence of nonequilibrium electrons on collisional ionization rates and its effect on the population distribution, as observed in a widely known experiment [Young et al., Nature (London) 466, 56 (2010)0028-083610.1038/nature09177]. The study reveals a significant nonequilibrium electron presence during XFEL-matter interactions, profoundly affecting collisional ionization rates in the gas plasma, thereby necessitating careful consideration of the Collisional-Radiative model applied to such systems.

Up to 30% of patients with locally advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (LA-HNSCC) relapse. Molecular residual disease (MRD) detection using multiple assays after definitive therapy has not been reported. In this study, we included patients with LA-HNSCC (stage III Human Papilloma virus (HPV)-positive, III-IVB HPV-negative) treated with curative intent. Plasma was collected pre-treatment, at 4-6 weeks (FU1) and 8-12 weeks (FU2) post-treatment. Circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) was analyzed using a tumor-informed (RaDaR®) and a tumor-naïve (CAPP-seq) assay. HPV DNA was measured using HPV-sequencing (HPV-seq) and digital PCR (dPCR). A total of 86 plasma samples from 32 patients were analyzed; all patients with at least 1 follow-up sample. Most patients were stage III HPV-positive (50%) and received chemoradiation (78%). No patients had radiological residual disease at FU2. With a median follow-up of 25 months, there were 7 clinical relapses. ctDNA at baseline was detected in 15/17 (88%) by RaDaR and was not associated with recurrence free survival (RFS). Two patients relapsed within a year after definitive therapy and showed MRD at FU2 using RaDaR; detection of ctDNA during follow-up was associated with shorter RFS (p < 0.001). ctDNA detection by CAPP-seq pre-treatment and during follow-up was not associated with RFS (p = 0.09). HPV DNA using HPV-seq or dPCR during follow-up was associated with shorter RFS (p < 0.001). Sensitivity and specificity for MRD at FU2 using RaDaR was 40% and 100% versus 20 and 90.5% using CAPP-seq. Sensitivity and specificity for MRD during follow-up using HPV-seq was 100% and 91.7% versus 50% and 100% using dPCR. In conclusion, HPV DNA and ctDNA can be detected in LA-HNSCC before definitive therapy. The RaDaR assay but not CAPP-seq may detect MRD in patients who relapse within 1 year. HPV-seq may be more sensitive than dPCR for MRD detection.

BACKGROUND: Conventional surgical site infection (SSI) surveillance is labour-intensive. We aimed to develop machine learning (ML) models for the surveillance of SSIs for colon surgery and to assess whether the ML could improve surveillance process efficiency. METHODS: This study included cases who underwent colon surgery at a tertiary center between 2013 and 2014. Logistic regression and four ML algorithms including random forest (RF), gradient boosting (GB), and neural networks (NNs) with or without recursive feature elimination (RFE) were first trained on the entire cohort, and then re-trained on cases selected based on a previous rule-based algorithm. We assessed model performance based on the area under the curve (AUC), sensitivity, and positive predictive value (PPV). The estimated proportion of reduction in workload for chart review based on the ML models was evaluated and compared with the conventional method. RESULTS: At a sensitivity of 95%, the NN with RFE using 29 variables had the best performance with an AUC of 0.963 and PPV of 21.1%. When combining both the rule-based algorithm and ML algorithms, the NN with RFE using 19 variables had a higher PPV (28.9%) than with the ML algorithm alone, which could decrease the number of cases requiring chart review by 83.9% compared with the conventional method. CONCLUSION: We demonstrated that ML can improve the efficiency of SSI surveillance for colon surgery by decreasing the burden of chart review while providing high sensitivity. In particular, the hybrid approach of ML with a rule-based algorithm showed the best performance in terms of PPV.

BACKGROUND: Amivantamab plus carboplatin-pemetrexed (chemotherapy) with and without lazertinib demonstrated antitumor activity in patients with refractory epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-mutated advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in phase I studies. These combinations were evaluated in a global phase III trial. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 657 patients with EGFR-mutated (exon 19 deletions or L858R) locally advanced or metastatic NSCLC after disease progression on osimertinib were randomized 2 : 2 : 1 to receive amivantamab-lazertinib-chemotherapy, chemotherapy, or amivantamab-chemotherapy. The dual primary endpoints were progression-free survival (PFS) of amivantamab-chemotherapy and amivantamab-lazertinib-chemotherapy versus chemotherapy. During the study, hematologic toxicities observed in the amivantamab-lazertinib-chemotherapy arm necessitated a regimen change to start lazertinib after carboplatin completion. RESULTS: All baseline characteristics were well balanced across the three arms, including by history of brain metastases and prior brain radiation. PFS was significantly longer for amivantamab-chemotherapy and amivantamab-lazertinib-chemotherapy versus chemotherapy [hazard ratio (HR) for disease progression or death 0.48 and 0.44, respectively; P < 0.001 for both; median of 6.3 and 8.3 versus 4.2 months, respectively]. Consistent PFS results were seen by investigator assessment (HR for disease progression or death 0.41 and 0.38 for amivantamab-chemotherapy and amivantamab-lazertinib-chemotherapy, respectively; P < 0.001 for both; median of 8.2 and 8.3 versus 4.2 months, respectively). Objective response rate was significantly higher for amivantamab-chemotherapy and amivantamab-lazertinib-chemotherapy versus chemotherapy (64% and 63% versus 36%, respectively; P < 0.001 for both). Median intracranial PFS was 12.5 and 12.8 versus 8.3 months for amivantamab-chemotherapy and amivantamab-lazertinib-chemotherapy versus chemotherapy (HR for intracranial disease progression or death 0.55 and 0.58, respectively). Predominant adverse events (AEs) in the amivantamab-containing regimens were hematologic, EGFR-, and MET-related toxicities. Amivantamab-chemotherapy had lower rates of hematologic AEs than amivantamab-lazertinib-chemotherapy. CONCLUSIONS: Amivantamab-chemotherapy and amivantamab-lazertinib-chemotherapy improved PFS and intracranial PFS versus chemotherapy in a population with limited options after disease progression on osimertinib. Longer follow-up is needed for the modified amivantamab-lazertinib-chemotherapy regimen.

Increased production of renewable energy sources is becoming increasingly needed. Amidst other strategies, one promising technology that could help achieve this goal is biological hydrogen production. This technology uses micro-organisms to convert organic matter into hydrogen gas, a clean and versatile fuel that can be used in a wide range of applications. While biohydrogen production is in its early stages, several challenges must be addressed for biological hydrogen production to become a viable commercial solution. From an experimental perspective, the need to improve the efficiency of hydrogen production, the optimization strategy of the microbial consortia, and the reduction in costs associated with the process is still required. From a scale-up perspective, novel strategies (such as modelling and experimental validation) need to be discussed to facilitate this hydrogen production process. Hence, this review considers hydrogen production, not within the framework of a particular production method or technique, but rather outlines the work (bioreactor modes and configurations, modelling, and techno-economic and life cycle assessment) that has been done in the field as a whole. This type of analysis allows for the abstraction of the biohydrogen production technology industrially, giving insights into novel applications, cross-pollination of separate lines of inquiry, and giving a reference point for researchers and industrial developers in the field of biohydrogen production.

There have been multiple benefits reported from the practice of mindfulness meditation. Recently social functioning, including empathy, has emerged as one such possible benefit. However, the literature is mixed and it is unknown if mindfulness has an effect on the neural mechanism involved in empathy. Therefore, we conducted a large-scale experimental study involving over 100 participants that were either enrolled in a behavioral or EEG experiment to examine pain empathy and mu suppression, respectively. We also measured state and trait mindfulness and trait empathy. Results did not show a change in pain empathy or mu suppression in response to an acute mindfulness manipulation. However, pain empathy responses were able to be predicted significantly better when the component of state mindfulness involving decentering was incorporated into a regression model compared to trait empathy alone. Also, trait empathy was related to trait mindfulness. Collectively, state decentering may be involved in increased pain empathy, while trait mindfulness appears more related to general trait empathy. Further research is warranted to better understand the potential benefit a brief mindfulness meditation may produce in the realm of brain activity and social functioning.

BACKGROUND: Sasanlimab is an antibody to the programmed cell death protein 1 receptor. We report updated data of subcutaneous sasanlimab in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and urothelial carcinoma dose expansion cohorts from a first-in-human phase Ib/II study. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients were ≥18 years of age with NSCLC or urothelial carcinoma, and no prior immunotherapies, who progressed on or were intolerant to systemic therapy, or for whom systemic therapy was refused or unavailable. Patients received subcutaneous sasanlimab at 300 mg every 4 weeks (q4w). Primary objectives were to evaluate safety, tolerability, and clinical efficacy by objective response rate (ORR). RESULTS: Sixty-eight and 38 patients with NSCLC and urothelial carcinoma, respectively, received subcutaneous sasanlimab. Overall, sasanlimab was well tolerated; 13.2% of patients experienced grade ≥3 treatment-related adverse events. Confirmed ORR was 16.4% and 18.4% in the NSCLC and urothelial carcinoma cohorts, respectively. ORR was generally higher in patients with high programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression (≥25%) and high tumor mutational burden (TMB; >75%). In the NSCLC and urothelial carcinoma cohorts, median progression-free survival (PFS) was 3.7 and 2.9 months, respectively; corresponding median overall survival (OS) was 14.7 and 10.9 months. Overall, longer median PFS and OS correlated with high PD-L1 expression and high TMB. Longer median PFS and OS were also associated with T-cell inflamed gene signature in the urothelial carcinoma cohort. CONCLUSIONS: Subcutaneous sasanlimab at 300 mg q4w was well tolerated with promising clinical efficacy observed. Phase II and III clinical trials of sasanlimab are ongoing to validate clinical benefit. Subcutaneous sasanlimab may be a potential treatment option for patients with NSCLC or urothelial carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: We hypothesized that avelumab plus axitinib could improve clinical outcomes in patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) or urothelial carcinoma (UC). PATIENTS AND METHODS: We enrolled previously treated patients with advanced or metastatic NSCLC, or untreated, cisplatin-ineligible patients with advanced or metastatic UC. Patients received avelumab 800 mg every 2 weeks (Q2W) and axitinib 5 mg orally two times daily. The primary endpoint was objective response rate (ORR). Immunohistochemistry was used to assess programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression (SP263 assay) and the presence of CD8+ T cells (clone C8/144B). Tumor mutational burden (TMB) was assessed by whole-exome sequencing. RESULTS: A total of 61 patients were enrolled and treated (NSCLC, n = 41; UC, n = 20); 5 remained on treatment at data cut-off (26 February 2021). The confirmed ORR was 31.7% in the NSCLC cohort and 10.0% in the UC cohort (all partial responses). Antitumor activity was observed irrespective of PD-L1 expression. The objective of this study was to evaluate the aging effects of long-term exposure to acidic beverages on the flexural strength (FS) and chemical reactions of two resin-based composites (RBCs) and one giomer. The FS of composite specimen bars (2 mm × 2 mm × 25 mm) was measured using a universal testing machine at various levels of thermocycling (TC; 0, 10,000, 50,000, and 100,000 cycles) in two beverages with different pH values (distilled water [DW], pH 7.0; Coca-Cola, pH 2.4-2.8). The FS data were analyzed using three-way analysis of variance with the post hoc Tukey test and t-test at a significance level of a=0.05. In DW, the FS of an RBC and a giomer did not decrease until 10,000 cycles. The other RBC, Z250, decreased rapidly until 50,000 cycles (p<0.05), followed by no additional decrease until 100,000 cycles. In Coca-Cola, the FS of two RBCs and a giomer decreased more rapidly than in DW from 10,000 cycles (t-test, p<0.05). In Coca-Cola, the increased porosity observed in scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images, the changes of the hydroxyl peak at 3340 cm-1 and ester peak at 1730-1700 cm-1 in Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy in attenuated total reflectance mode (FTIR-ATR) spectra, and the continuous increase of the Si-O/Si-C peak height ratio from 10,000 cycles to 100,000 cycles in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) suggested an increased loss of silane-carbon bond between the matrix and fillers of the Z250 RBC, compared to those in DW. In conclusion, when TC was performed in DW, unreacted monomers and a coupling agent were washed out, which caused porosity and reduced FS. In Coca-Cola, acidic conditions accelerated the removal of the matrix through the hydrolysis reaction at the ester groups, resulting in more porosity and a faster decrease in FS than in DW.

The temporal modulation of an electron bunch train accelerated from a foil target irradiated by an intense laser pulse is studied by measuring the coherent transition radiation (CTR) from the rear surface of a target. We experimentally obtained CTR spectra from a 1 µm thick foil target irradiated at a maximum intensity of 6.5 × 1019 W/cm2. Spectral redshifts of the emitted radiation corresponding to increases in laser intensity were observed. These measurements were compared with the theoretical calculation of CTR spectra considering ultrafast surface dynamics, such as plasma surface oscillation and relativistically induced transparency. Plasma surface oscillations induce a spectral redshift, while relativistic transparency causes a spectral blueshift. Both effects are required to find reasonable agreement with the experiment over the entire range of laser intensities.

BACKGROUND: We evaluated whether tissue tumor mutational burden (tTMB) and STK11, KEAP1, and KRAS mutations have clinical utility as biomarkers for pembrolizumab monotherapy versus platinum-based chemotherapy in patients with programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1)-positive (tumor proportion score ≥1%) advanced/metastatic non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) without EGFR/ALK alterations in the phase III KEYNOTE-042 trial. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This retrospective exploratory analysis assessed prevalence of tTMB and STK11, KEAP1, and KRAS mutations determined by whole-exome sequencing of tumor tissue and matched normal DNA and their associations with outcomes in KEYNOTE-042. Clinical utility of tTMB was assessed using a prespecified cut point of 175 mutations/exome. RESULTS: Of 793 patients, 345 (43.5%) had tTMB ≥175 mutations/exome and 448 (56.5%) had tTMB <175 mutations/exome. No association was observed between PD-L1 expression and tTMB. Continuous tTMB score was associated with improved overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival among patients receiving pembrolizumab (Wald test, one-sided P < 0.001) but not those receiving chemotherapy (Wald test, two-sided P > 0.05). tTMB ≥175 mutations/exome was associated with improved outcomes for pembrolizumab versus chemotherapy, whereas tTMB <175 mutations/exome was not {OS: hazard ratio, 0.62 [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.48-0.80] and 1.09 (95% CI 0.88-1.36); progression-free survival: 0.75 (0.59-0.95) and 1.27 (1.04-1.55), respectively}. Improved OS [hazard ratio (95% CI)] for pembrolizumab versus chemotherapy was observed regardless of STK11 [STK11 mutant (n = 33): 0.37 (0.16-0.86), STK11 wild-type (n = 396): 0.83 (0.65-1.05)]; KEAP1 [KEAP1 mutant (n = 64): 0.75 (0.42-1.35), KEAP1 wild-type (n = 365): 0.78 (0.61-0.99)], or KRAS [KRAS mutant (n = 69): 0.42 (0.22-0.81); KRAS wild-type (n = 232): 0.86 (0.63-1.18)] mutation status. CONCLUSION: tTMB with a cut point of ≥175 mutations/exome is a potential predictive biomarker for pembrolizumab monotherapy for advanced/metastatic PD-L1 tumor proportion score ≥1% NSCLC. Pembrolizumab is a standard first-line treatment in this setting regardless of STK11, KEAP1, or KRAS mutation status.

Transplantation-associated thrombotic microangiopathy (TA-TMA) is an increasingly recognized complication of hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) associated with significant morbidity and mortality. However, TA-TMA is a clinical diagnosis, and multiple criteria have been proposed without universal application. Although some patients have a self-resolving disease, others progress to multiorgan failure and/or death. Poor prognostic features also are not uniformly accepted. The lack of harmonization of diagnostic and prognostic markers has precluded multi-institutional studies to better understand incidence and outcomes. Even current interventional trials use different criteria, making it challenging to interpret the data. To address this urgent need, the American Society for Transplantation and Cellular Therapy, Center for International Bone Marrow Transplant Research, Asia-Pacific Blood and Marrow Transplantation, and European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation nominated representatives for an expert panel tasked with reaching consensus on diagnostic and prognostic criteria. The panel reviewed literature, generated consensus statements regarding diagnostic and prognostic features of TA-TMA using the Delphi method, and identified future directions of investigation. Consensus was reached on 4 key concepts: (1) TA-TMA can be diagnosed using clinical and laboratory criteria or tissue biopsy of kidney or gastrointestinal tissue; however, biopsy is not required; (2) consensus diagnostic criteria are proposed using the modified Jodele criteria with additional definitions of anemia and thrombocytopenia. TA-TMA is diagnosed when ≥4 of the following 7 features occur twice within 14 days: anemia, defined as failure to achieve transfusion independence despite neutrophil engraftment; hemoglobin decline by ≥1 g/dL or new-onset transfusion dependence; thrombocytopenia, defined as failure to achieve platelet engraftment, higher-than-expected transfusion needs, refractory to platelet transfusions, or ≥50% reduction in baseline platelet count after full platelet engraftment; lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) exceeding the upper limit of normal (ULN); schistocytes; hypertension; soluble C5b-9 (sC5b-9) exceeding the ULN; and proteinuria (≥1 mg/mg random urine protein-to-creatinine ratio [rUPCR]); (3) patients with any of the following features are at increased risk of nonrelapse mortality and should be stratified as high-risk TA-TMA: elevated sC5b-9, LDH ≥2 times the ULN, rUPCR ≥1 mg/mg, multiorgan dysfunction, concurrent grade II-IV acute graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), or infection (bacterial or viral); and (4) all allogeneic and pediatric autologous HCT recipients with neuroblastoma should be screened weekly for TA-TMA during the first 100 days post-HCT. Patients diagnosed with TA-TMA should be risk-stratified, and those with high-risk disease should be offered participation in a clinical trial for TA-TMA-directed therapy if available. We propose that these criteria and risk stratification features be used in data registries, prospective studies, and clinical practice across international settings. This harmonization will facilitate the investigation of TA-TMA across populations diverse in race, ethnicity, age, disease indications, and transplantation characteristics. As these criteria are widely used, we expect continued refinement as necessary. Efforts to identify more specific diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers are a top priority of the field. Finally, an investigation of the impact of TA-TMA-directed treatment, particularly in the setting of concurrent highly morbid complications, such as steroid-refractory GVHD and infection, is critically needed.

We report the temperature dependence of the Yb valence in the geometrically frustrated compoundYbB4from 12 to 300 K using resonant x-ray emission spectroscopy at the YbLα1transition. We find that the Yb valence,v, is hybridized between thev = 2 andv = 3 valence states, increasing fromv=2.61±0.01at 12 K tov=2.67±0.01at 300 K, confirming thatYbB4is a Kondo system in the intermediate valence regime. This result indicates that the Kondo interaction inYbB4is substantial, and is likely to be the reason whyYbB4does not order magnetically at low temperature, rather than this being an effect of geometric frustration. Furthermore, the zero-point valence of the system is extracted from our data and compared with other Kondo lattice systems. The zero-point valence seems to be weakly dependent on the Kondo temperature scale, but not on the valence change temperature scaleTv.

IMPORTANCE: Patient-derived xenografts (PDXs) offer the opportunity to identify patients with oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) who are at risk for recurrence and optimize clinical decision-making. OBJECTIVE: To develop and validate a prediction score for locoregional failure (LRF) and distant metastases (DM) in OSCC that incorporates PDX engraftment in addition to known clinicopathological risk factors. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this retrospective cohort study, PDX models were generated from patients with OSCC treated with curative intent at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre (Toronto, Canada) between 2006 and 2018. The cohort included 288 patients (aged ≥18 years) with a new diagnosis of nonmetastatic (M0) OSCC whose tumor samples were available for engraftment under the skin of xenograft mice. Patients were scored as a nonengrafter if PDX formation did not occur within 6 months. Data analysis was performed between August 2006 and May 2018. INTERVENTIONS: All patients received up-front curative-intent surgery followed by either observation or postoperative radiation with or without concurrent chemotherapy based on institutional guidelines. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: Main outcomes were LRF, DM, and overall survival (OS). Multivariable analysis (MVA) was used to identify predictors of LRF and DM. Factors retained in the final MVA were used to construct a prediction score and classify patients into risk groups. RESULTS: Overall, 288 patients (mean [SD] age at diagnosis, 63.3 [12.3] years; 112 [39%] women and 176 [61%] men) with OSCC were analyzed. The MVA identified pT3-4, pathologic extranodal extension, and engraftment as predictors of LRF and DM. Patients whose tumors engrafted (n = 198) were more likely to develop LRF (hazard ratio [HR], 1.98; 95% CI, 1.24-3.18) and DM (HR, 2.64; 95% CI, 1.21-5.75) compared with nonengrafters. A prediction score based on the aforementioned variables identified patients at high risk and low risk for LRF (43.5% vs 26.5%), DM (38.2% vs 8.4%), and inferior OS (34% vs 66%) at 5 years. Additionally, rapid engraftment was shown to be similarly prognostic, with rapid engrafters demonstrating higher rates of relapse and poor OS. CONCLUSIONS: In this cohort study, a prediction score using OSCC PDX engraftment, in conjunction with pT3-4 and pathologic extranodal extension, was associated with improved prognostic utility of existing clinical models and predicted patients at risk for LRF, DM, and poor survival.

BACKGROUND: While osimertinib, a third-generation epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) is the standard treatment in patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) with sensitising EGFR and acquired T790M mutations, progression inevitably occurs. The angiogenic pathway is implicated in EGFR TKI resistance. PATIENTS AND METHODS: BOOSTER is an open-label randomised phase II trial investigating the efficacy and safety of combined osimertinib 80 mg daily and bevacizumab 15 mg/kg every 3 weeks, versus osimertinib alone, in patients with EGFR-mutant advanced NSCLC and acquired T790M mutations after failure on previous EGFR TKI therapy. Primary endpoint was investigator-assessed progression-free survival (PFS). Secondary endpoints were overall survival (OS), objective response rate (ORR) and adverse events (AEs). RESULTS: Between May 2017 and February 2019, 155 patients were randomised (combination: 78; osimertinib: 77). At data cut-off of 22 February 2021, median follow-up was 33.8 months [interquartile range (IQR): 26.5-37.6 months] and 129 (83.2%) PFS events were reported in the intention-to-treat population. There was no difference in median PFS between the combination [15.4 months; 95% confidence interval (CI) 9.2-18.0 months] and osimertinib arm (12.3 months; 95% CI 6.2-17.2 months; stratified log-rank P = 0.83), [hazard ratio (HR) = 0.96; 95% CI 0.68-1.37]. Median OS was 24.0 months (95% CI 17.8-32.1 months) in the combination arm and 24.3 months (95% CI 16.9-37.0 months) in the osimertinib arm (stratified log-rank P = 0.91), (HR = 1.03; 95% CI 0.67-1.56). Exploratory analysis revealed a significant interaction of smoking history with treatment for PFS (adjusted P = 0.0052) with a HR of 0.52 (95% CI 0.30-0.90) for smokers, and 1.47 (95% CI 0.92-2.33) for never smokers. ORR was 55% in both arms and the median time to treatment failure was significantly shorter in the combination than in the osimertinib arm, 8.2 months versus 10.8 months, respectively (P = 0.0074). Safety of osimertinib and bevacizumab was consistent with previous reports with grade ≥3 treatment-related AEs (TRAEs) reported in 47% and 18% of patients on combination and osimertinib alone, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: No difference in PFS was observed between osimertinib plus bevacizumab and osimertinib alone. Grade ≥3 TRAEs were more common in patients on combination.

Asymmetric spin wave excitation and propagation are key properties to develop spin-based electronics, such as magnetic memory, spin information and logic devices. To date, such nonreciprocal effects cannot be manipulated in a system because of the geometrical magnetic configuration, while large values of asymmetry ratio are achieved. In this study, we suggest a new magnetic system with two blocks, in which the asymmetric intensity ratio can be changed between 0.276 and 1.43 by adjusting the excitation frequency between 7.8 GHz and 9.4 GHz. Because the two blocks have different widths, they have their own spin wave excitation frequency ranges. Indeed, the spin wave intensities in the two blocks, detected by the Brillouin light scattering spectrum, were observed to be frequency-dependent, yielding tuneable asymmetry ratio. Thus, this study provides a new path to enhance the application of spin waves in spin-based electronics.

Despite evidence for the superiority of twice-daily (BID) radiotherapy schedules, their utilization in practice remains logistically challenging. Hypofractionation (HFRT) is a commonly implemented alternative. We aim to compare the outcomes and toxicities in limited-stage small-cell lung cancer (LS-SCLC) patients treated with hypofractionated versus BID schedules. A bi-institutional retrospective cohort review was conducted of LS-SCLC patients treated with BID (45 Gy/30 fractions) or HFRT (40 Gy/15 fractions) schedules from 2007 to 2019. Overlap weighting using propensity scores was performed to balance observed covariates between the two radiotherapy schedule groups. Effect estimates of radiotherapy schedule on overall survival (OS), locoregional recurrence (LRR) risk, thoracic response, any ≥grade 3 (including lung, and esophageal) toxicity were determined using multivariable regression modelling. A total of 173 patients were included in the overlap-weighted analysis, with 110 patients having received BID treatment, and 63 treated by HFRT. The median follow-up was 20.4 months. Multivariable regression modelling did not reveal any significant differences in OS (hazard ratio [HR] 1.67, p = 0.38), LRR risk (HR 1.48, p = 0.38), thoracic response (odds ratio [OR] 0.23, p = 0.21), any ≥grade 3+ toxicity (OR 1.67, p = 0.33), ≥grade 3 pneumonitis (OR 1.14, p = 0.84), or ≥grade 3 esophagitis (OR 1.41, p = 0.62). HFRT, in comparison to BID radiotherapy schedules, does not appear to result in significantly different survival, locoregional control, or toxicity outcomes.

Parametric pumping is a nonlinear wave phenomenon and a promising technique for electronic devices based on spin waves, so-called "magnonics". For parametric excitation, a magnetic nanowire system that has a built-in dc current line to produce an Oersted field is designed, and for spin wave detection, a micro-Brillouin light scattering (µ-BLS) system is used. A spin wave with a frequency of fsw = 5.6 GHz is observed when a pumping microwave with a frequency of fmw = 11.2 GHz is applied. The wave is found to be of the n = 1 width mode (n is the antinode number), and its mode changes to an edge-localized (or possibly n > 1) mode when the Oersted field (or current) varies. Joule heating effects are not observed in the pumping process. Thus, spin wave mode control by the built-in current would be a convenient and useful method to enhance the efficiency and compatibility in applications of spin-based electronics.
