RESUMO

Ochlerotatus togoi is a salt-tolerant euryhaline mosquito that lays its eggs in rock pools. Although it is a pest that can transmit flaviviruses and filarial worms to humans, ecological studies have not been previously conducted because of its limited habitat. However, rising sea levels have created a more favorable environment for Oc. togoi, increasing the risk of Oc. togoi-borne diseases. We examined the oviposition and growth rates of Oc. togoi at 0-35 psu to obtain ecological data. It exhibited the highest oviposition preference at 0 psu; however, the hatching rate was highest at 10 psu, the pupation rate was highest at 25 psu, and the emergence rate was highest at 5 psu. Oc. togoi showed the highest rate of growth into adults at 25 psu. The results were assessed using Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis H tests (post hoc test: Bonferroni), and a regression equation was generated for the incidence of adult Oc. togoi based on the change in salinity (y = -14.318 + 9.821x; y = adult incidence rate; x = salinity). The oviposition habits and developmental conditions of Oc. togoi were confirmed, and the incidence of Oc. togoi based on changes in sea level and ocean salinity was predicted. The results of this study will be useful for controlling salt-tolerant vectors and responding to vector-borne diseases.

RESUMO

Coronary artery fistula (CAF) is characterized as a congenital or acquired abnormal communication between a coronary artery and any of the four chambers of the heart (coronary-cameral fistula) or great vessels (coronary arteriovenous fistula) bypassing the capillaries within myocardium. CAF is a rare disease, challenging to diagnose and treat depending on the anatomical location and type of the fistula and accompanying diseases. This study aims to report a case with multiple coronary artery to coronary sinus (CS) fistulas with giant left circumflex artery and multivalvular infective endocarditis.

RESUMO

Grown evidence has shown that the liver and reproductive organs were the main target organs of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). Herein, we studied a toxic mechanism of PFOA using HeLa Chang liver epithelial cells. When incubated with PFOA for 24 h or 48 h, cell proliferation was inhibited in a concentration- and time-dependent fashion, but interestingly, the feature of dead cells was not notable. Mitochondrial volume was increased with concentration and time, whereas the mitochondrial membrane potential and produced ATP amounts were significantly reduced. Autophagosome-like vacuoles and contraction of the mitochondrial inner membrane were observed in PFOA-treated cells. The expression of acetyl CoA carboxylase (ACC) and p-ACC proteins rapidly decreased, and that of mitochondrial dynamics-related proteins increased. The expression of solute carrier family 7 genes, ChaC glutathione-specific gamma-glutamylcyclotransferase 1, and 5S ribosomal RNA gene was up-regulated the most in cells exposed to PFOA for 24 h, and the KEGG pathway analysis revealed that PFOA the most affected metabolic pathways and olfactory transduction. More importantly, PPAR alpha, fatty acid binding protein 1, and CYP450 family 1 subfamily A member 1 were identified as the target proteins for binding between PFOA and cells. Taken together, we suggest that disruption of mitochondrial integrity and function may contribute closely to PFOA-induced cell proliferation inhibition.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether a deep learning (DL) controlled aliasing in parallel imaging results in higher acceleration (CAIPIRINHA)-volumetric interpolated breath-hold examination (VIBE) technique can improve image quality, lesion conspicuity, and lesion detection compared to a standard CAIPIRINHA-VIBE technique in gadoxetic acid-enhanced liver MRI. METHODS: This retrospective single-center study included 168 patients who underwent gadoxetic acid-enhanced liver MRI at 3 T using both standard CAIPIRINHA-VIBE and DL CAIPIRINHA-VIBE techniques on pre-contrast and hepatobiliary phase (HBP) images. Additionally, high-resolution (HR) DL CAIPIRINHA-VIBE was obtained with 1-mm slice thickness on the HBP. Three abdominal radiologists independently assessed the image quality and lesion conspicuity of pre-contrast and HBP images. Statistical analyses involved the Wilcoxon signed-rank test for image quality assessment and the generalized estimation equation for lesion conspicuity and detection evaluation. RESULTS: DL and HR-DL CAIPIRINHA-VIBE demonstrated significantly improved overall image quality and reduced artifacts on pre-contrast and HBP images compared to standard CAIPIRINHA-VIBE (p < 0.001), with a shorter acquisition time (DL vs standard, 11 s vs 17 s). However, the former presented a more synthetic appearance (both p < 0.05). HR-DL CAIPIRINHA-VIBE showed superior lesion conspicuity to standard and DL CAIPIRINHA-VIBE on HBP images (p < 0.001). Moreover, HR-DL CAIPIRINHA-VIBE exhibited a significantly higher detection rate of small (< 2 cm) solid focal liver lesions (FLLs) on HBP images compared to standard CAIPIRINHA-VIBE (92.5% vs 87.4%; odds ratio = 1.83; p = 0.036). CONCLUSION: DL and HR-DL CAIPIRINHA-VIBE achieved superior image quality compared to standard CAIPIRINHA-VIBE. Additionally, HR-DL CAIPIRINHA-VIBE improved the lesion conspicuity and detection of small solid FLLs. DL and HR-DL CAIPIRINHA-VIBE hold the potential clinical utility for gadoxetic acid-enhanced liver MRI. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: DL and HR-DL CAIPIRINHA-VIBE hold promise as potential alternatives to standard CAIPIRINHA-VIBE in routine clinical liver MRI, improving the image quality and lesion conspicuity, enhancing the detection of small (< 2 cm) solid focal liver lesions, and reducing the acquisition time. KEY POINTS: • DL and HR-DL CAIPIRINHA-VIBE demonstrated improved overall image quality and reduced artifacts on pre-contrast and HBP images compared to standard CAIPIRINHA-VIBE, in addition to a shorter acquisition time. • DL and HR-DL CAIPIRINHA-VIBE yielded a more synthetic appearance than standard CAIPIRINHA-VIBE. • HR-DL CAIPIRINHA-VIBE showed improved lesion conspicuity than standard CAIPIRINHA-VIBE on HBP images, with a higher detection of small (< 2 cm) solid focal liver lesions.

RESUMO

Physical activity has been considered an important non-medication intervention in preserving mnemonic processes during aging. However, how aerobic exercise promotes such benefits for human health remains unclear. In this study, we aimed to explore the neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects of aerobic exercise against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced amnesic C57BL/6J mice and BV-2 microglial cell models. In the in vivo experiment, the aerobic exercise training groups were allowed to run on a motorized treadmill 5 days/week for 4 weeks at a speed of 10 rpm/min, with LPS (0.1 mg/kg) intraperitoneally injected once a week for 4 weeks. We found that aerobic exercise ameliorated memory impairment and cognitive deficits among the amnesic mice. Correspondingly, aerobic exercise significantly increased the protein expressions of FNDC5, which activates target neuroprotective markers BDNF and CREB, and antioxidant markers Nrf2/HO-1, leading to inhibiting microglial-mediated neuroinflammation and reduced the expression of BACE-1 in the hippocampus and cerebral cortex of amnesic mice. We estimated that aerobic exercise inhibited neuroinflammation in part through the action of FNDC5/irisin on microglial cells. Therefore, we explored the anti-inflammatory effects of irisin on LPS-stimulated BV-2 microglial cells. In the in vitro experiment, irisin treatment blocked NF-κB/MAPK/IRF3 signaling activation concomitantly with the significantly lowered levels of the LPS-induced iNOS and COX-2 elevations and promotes the Nrf2/HO-1 expression in the LPS-stimulated BV-2 microglial cells. Together, our findings suggest that aerobic exercise can improve the spatial learning ability and cognitive functions of LPS-treated mice by inhibiting microglia-mediated neuroinflammation through its effect on the expression of BDNF/FNDC5/irisin.

RESUMO

Retinal detachment and other vision-threatening disorders often necessitate vitreous body removal and tamponade injection for retina stabilization. Current clinical tamponades such as silicone oil and expansile gases have drawbacks, including patient discomfort and the need for secondary surgery. We introduce a transparent alginate-phenylboronic acid/polyvinyl alcohol composite hydrogel (TALPPH) as a novel vitreous substitute with tamponading capabilities. In vitro physicochemical, rheological, and optical characterization of in situ self-healable TALPPH was performed, and long-term biocompatibility was assessed in a rabbit model of vitrectomy retinal detachment. In vivo evaluations confirmed TALPPH's ability to inhibit retinal detachment recurrence and preserve rabbit vision without adverse effects. TALPPH's close resemblance to the natural vitreous body suggests potential as a vitreous tamponade substitute for future ophthalmological applications.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore the psychometric properties of the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) based on modern test theory, such as item response theory (IRT) and Rasch analysis, with shortened versions of the ISI among the general population. METHODS: We conducted two studies to evaluate the reliability and validity of the shortened versions of the ISI in a Korean population. In Study I, conducted via online survey, we performed an exploratory factor analysis (n=400). In Study II, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted (n=400). IRT and Rasch analysis were performed on all samples. Participants symptoms were rated using the ISI, Dysfunctional Beliefs and Attitudes about Sleep-16 items, Dysfunctional Beliefs about Sleep-2 items, Patient Health Questionnaire-9 items, and discrepancy between desired time in bed and desired total sleep time. RESULTS: CFA showed a good fit for the 2-factor model of the ISI (comparative fit index=0.994, Tucker-Lewis index=0.990, root-meansquare-error of approximation=0.039, and standardized root-mean-square residual=0.046). The 3-item versions also showed a good fit for the model. All scales showed good internal consistency reliability. The scale information curve of the 2-item scale was similar to that of the full-scale ISI. The Rasch analysis outputs suggested a good model fit. CONCLUSION: The shortened 2-factor ISI is a reliable and valid model for assessing the severity of insomnia in the Korean population. The results are needed to be explored further among the clinical sample of insomnia.

RESUMO

Given the significant impact of sleep on overall health, radar technology offers a promising, non-invasive, and cost-effective avenue for the early detection of sleep disorders, even prior to relying on polysomnography (PSG)-based classification. In this study, we employed an attention-based bidirectional long short-term memory (Attention Bi-LSTM) model to accurately predict sleep stages using 60 GHz frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) radar. Our dataset comprised 78 participants from an ongoing obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) cohort, recruited between July 2021 and November 2022, who underwent overnight polysomnography alongside radar sensor monitoring. The dataset encompasses comprehensive polysomnography recordings, spanning both sleep and wakefulness states. The predictions achieved a Cohen's kappa coefficient of 0.746 and an overall accuracy of 85.2% in classifying wakefulness, rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep, and non-REM (NREM) sleep (N1 + N2 + N3). The results demonstrated that the models incorporating both Radar 1 and Radar 2 data consistently outperformed those using only Radar 1 data, indicating the potential benefits of utilising multiple radars for sleep stage classification. Although the performance of the models tended to decline with increasing OSA severity, the addition of Radar 2 data notably improved the classification accuracy. These findings demonstrate the potential of radar technology as a valuable screening tool for sleep stage classification.

RESUMO

In principle, hybrid energy storages can utilize the advantages of capacitor-type cathodes and battery-type anodes, but their cathode and anode materials still cannot realize a high energy density, fast rechargeable capability, and long-cycle stability. Herein, we report a strategy to synthesize cathode and anode materials as a solution to overcome this challenge. Firstly, 3D nitrogen-doped hierarchical porous graphitic carbon (NHPGC) frameworks were synthesized as cathode materials using Co-Zn mixed metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). A high capacity is achieved due to the abundant nitrogen and micropores produced by the MOF nanocages and evaporation of Zn. Also, fast ion/electron transport channels were derived through the Co-catalyzed hierarchical porosity control and graphitization. Moreover, tin oxide precursors were introduced in NHPGC to form the SnO2@NHPGC anode. Operando X-ray diffraction revealed that the rescaled subnanoparticles as anodic units facilitated the high capacity during ion insertion-induced rescaling. Besides, the Sn-N bonds endowed the anode with a cycling stability. Furthermore, the NHPGC cathode and SnO2@NHPGC achieved an ultrahigh energy density (up to 244.5 W h kg-1 for Li and 146.1 W h kg-1 for Na), fast rechargeable capability (up to 93C-rate for Li and 147C-rate for Na) as exhibited by photovoltaic recharge within a minute and a long-cycle stability with ∼100% coulombic efficiency over 10 000 cycles.

RESUMO

This study employs computational chemistry to investigate the electronic properties of halide perovskite materials, focusing on structural frameworks, elemental composition, surface engineering, and defect engineering. The tetragonal phase generally exhibits higher band gaps than the cubic phase due to conduction band differences, with LiPbCl3 showing the greatest band gap difference. The ionic radius of the A element influences band gaps for both phases, with Cs having the highest impact. Surface engineering significantly affects the electronic properties, and surface direction and composition play vital roles in determining band gaps. Defect engineering induces semiconducting-to-metallic transitions, impacting band gaps. Understanding these core variables is crucial for tailoring the electronic properties of halide perovskites for photovoltaic and optoelectronic applications.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify the factors affecting posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptom remission prospectively through a 1-year follow-up of sexual assault (SA) victims. METHODS: A total 65 female SA victims who visited the crisis intervention center were included. Self-administered questionnaires regarding PTSD symptoms and PTSD related prognostic factors were conducted at both recruitment (T1) and 1 year after recruitment (T2). The multivariate analyses were used to determine the significant predictors of PTSD remission/non-remission state 1 year after SA. RESULTS: In logistic regression analysis, both anxiety and secondary victimization were identified as significant factors explaining the results on PTSD remission/non-remission state at T2 (Beck's Anxiety Inventory [BAI], p=0.003; Secondary Victimization Questionnaire, p=0.024). In a linear mixed analysis, both depression and anxiety were found to be significant variables leading to changes in Posttraumatic Diagnostic Scale for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition from T1 to T2 (BAI, p<0.001; Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale, p<0.001). CONCLUSION: Depression, anxiety symptoms, and secondary victimization after SA were associated with PTSD symptom non-remission 1 year after SA.

RESUMO

Objectives: Following the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, adolescents have experienced decreased physical activity and a decline in mental health. This study analyzed the association between changes in depressed mood after the COVID-19 pandemic and physical activity among adolescents. Methods: The analysis was based on the results of the 17th Youth Health Behavior Online Survey conducted in 2021, which included 54848 middle and high school students in South Korea. Information on physical activity included low-intensity physical activity lasting >60 min/day, high-intensity physical activity, and strength training exercises. A logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate the association between physical activity and changes in depression after the COVID-19 pandemic. Results: After adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics and previous depression, adolescents who performed strength training exercises more than once per week had a 0.95-fold lower risk (odds ratio [OR]=0.948, 95% confidence interval [CI]=0.905-0.994, p= 0.027) of increasing depression after the COVID-19 pandemic, while the risk of decreasing depression increased by 1.22-fold (OR=1.215, 95% CI=1.131-1.305, p<0.001). The results were not significant for low-intensity physical activity for >60 min/day and high-intensity physical activity. Conclusion: Strength-training exercises are significantly associated with the prevention of depression among adolescents following the COVID-19 pandemic.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The suicide rate in Korea was the highest among countries in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development in 2019. In a previous study, higher intake of vegetables and fruits was associated with a lower risk of suicidal ideation, and carotene-rich fruits and vegetables lowered the risk of depression. This study aimed to examine the direct relationship between carotene intake and suicidal ideation, adjusting for the effect on depression. METHODS: This study used data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) conducted in 2012, 2013, and 2015. Carotene intake was assessed through a food intake frequency survey with a 24-hour recall. Suicidal ideation and depression were assessed using the mental health section of the KNHANES. We applied logistic regression to assess the relationship between carotene intake and suicidal ideation, adjusting for potential confounders. RESULTS: A total of 5,480 females aged 19-64 years were included in this study. Carotene intake was significantly lower in the suicidal ideation group (3,034.5±1,756.4 µg/day) than in the nonsuicidal ideation group (3,225.4±1,795.1 µg/day) (p=0.015). We found a significant inverse association between carotene intake and the risk of suicidal ideation after adjusting for potential confounders (odds ratio=0.934, 95% confidence interval=0.873-0.999). CONCLUSION: These results suggest that carotene intake may be inversely associated with the risk of suicidal ideation. Our findings may inform the development of new nutritional interventions to prevent increases in the risk of suicide worldwide.

RESUMO

Increasing the freshness of vegetables requires the elimination of ethylene, which can be done through chemical methods. However, the development of eco-friendly approaches is required for environmental reasons. Chlorella vulgaris (C. vulgaris) was selected as a new biological material for demonstrating an excellent performance in ethylene removal. To support C. vulgaris, bacterial cellulose (BC) produced by Gluconacetobacter hansenii (G. hansenii) was chosen due to its high water content and biodegradability. To increase BC productivity, UV-induced mutant G. hansenii was isolated, and they produced high yields of BC (9.80 ±â€¯0.52 g/L). Furthermore, comparative transcriptome analysis revealed metabolic flux changes toward UDP-glucose accumulation and enhanced BC production. BC-based hydrogels (BC hydrogels) were successfully prepared using a 2.4 % carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and 1 % agar mixture. We used Chlorella-BC hydrogels as an ethylene scavenger, which reduced 90 % of ethylene even when the immobilized C. vulgaris was preserved for 14 days at room temperature without media supplementation. We demonstrated for the first time the potential of BC hydrogels to integrate C. vulgaris as a sustainable ethylene absorber for green food packaging and biomass technology.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To investigate the image quality and diagnostic performance of low-contrast-dose liver CT using a deep learning-based iodine contrast-augmenting algorithm (DLICA) for hypovascular hepatic metastases. METHODS: This retrospective study included 128 patients who underwent contrast-enhanced dual-energy CT for hepatic metastasis surveillance between July 2019 and June 2022 using a 30% reduced iodine contrast dose in the portal phase. Three image types were reconstructed: 50-keV virtual monoenergetic images (50-keV VMI); linearly blended images simulating 120-kVp images (120-kVp); and post-processed 120-kVp images using DLICA (DLICA 120-kVp). Three reviewers evaluated lesion conspicuity, image contrast, and subjective image noise. We also measured image noise, contrast-to-noise ratios (CNRs), and signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). The diagnostic performance for hepatic metastases was evaluated using a jackknife alternative free-response receiver operating characteristic method with the consensus of two independent radiologists as the reference standard. RESULTS: DLICA 120-kVp demonstrated significantly higher CNR of lesions to liver (5.7 ± 3.1 vs. 3.8 ± 2.1 vs. 3.8 ± 2.1) and higher SNR compared with 50-keV VMI and 120-kVp (p < 0.001 for all). DLICA 120-kVp had significantly lower image noise than 50-kVp VMI for all regions (p < 0.001 for all). DLICA 120-kVp also exhibited superior lesion conspicuity (4.0 [3.3-4.3] vs. 3.7 [3.0-4.0] vs. 3.7 [3.0-4.0]), higher image contrast, and lower subjective image noise compared with 50-keV VMI and 120-kVp (p < 0.001 for all). Although there was no significant difference in the figure of merit for lesion diagnosis among the three methods (p = 0.11), DLICA 120-kVp had a significantly higher figure of merit for lesions with a diameter < 20 mm than 50-keV VMI (0.677 vs. 0.648, p = 0.007). On a per-lesion basis, DLICA 120-kVp also demonstrated higher sensitivity than the 50-keV VMI (81.2% vs. 72.9%, p < 0.001). The specificities per lesion were not significantly different among the three algorithms (p = 0.15). CONCLUSION: DLICA at 120-kVp provided superior lesion conspicuity and image quality and similar diagnostic performance for hypovascular hepatic metastases compared with 50-keV VMI.

RESUMO

Discovering new bioactivities and identifying active compounds of food materials are major fields of study in food science. However, the process commonly requires extensive experiments and can be technically challenging. In the current study, we employed network biology and cheminformatic approaches to predict new target diseases, active components, and related molecular mechanisms of propolis. Applying UHPLC-MS/MS analysis results of propolis to Context-Oriented Directed Associations (CODA) and Combination-Oriented Natural Product Database with Unified Terminology (COCONUT) systems indicated atopic dermatitis as a novel target disease. Experimental validation using cell- and human tissue-based models confirmed the therapeutic potential of propolis against atopic dermatitis. Moreover, we were able to find the major contributing compounds as well as their combinatorial effects responsible for the bioactivity of propolis. The CODA/COCONUT system also provided compound-associated genes explaining the underlying molecular mechanism of propolis. These results highlight the potential use of big data-driven network biological approaches to aid in analyzing the impact of food constituents at a systematic level.

RESUMO

Plasmodium vivax is the most widespread cause of malaria, especially in subtropical and temperate regions such as Asia-Pacific and America. P. vivax lactate dehydrogenase (PvLDH), an essential enzyme in the glycolytic pathway, is required for the development and reproduction of the parasite. Thus, LDH from these parasites has garnered attention as a diagnostic biomarker for malaria and as a potential molecular target for developing antimalarial drugs. In this study, we prepared a transformed Escherichia coli strain for the overexpression of PvLDH without codon optimization. We introduced this recombinant plasmid DNA prepared by insertion of the PvLDH gene in the pET-21a(+) expression vector, into the Rosetta(DE3), an E. coli strain suitable for eukaryotic protein expression. The time, temperature, and inducer concentration for PvLDH expression from this E. coli Rosetta(DE3), containing the original PvLDH gene, were optimized. We obtained PvLDH with a 31.0 mg/L yield and high purity (>95%) from this Rosetta(DE3) strain. The purified protein was characterized structurally and functionally. The PvLDH expressed and purified from transformed bacteria without codon optimization was successfully demonstrated to exhibit its potential tetramer structure and enzyme activity. These findings are expected to provide valuable insights for research on infectious diseases, metabolism, diagnostics, and therapeutics for malaria caused by P. vivax.

RESUMO

Dual drug delivery has become the choice of interest nowadays due to its increased therapeutic efficacy in targeting the tumor site precisely. As quoted in recent literature, it has been known to treat several cancers with an acute course of action. Even so, its use is restricted due to the drug's low pharmacological activity, which leads to poor bioavailability and increases first-pass metabolism. To overcome these issues, a drug delivery system using nanomaterials which would not only encapsulate the drugs of interest but also carry them to the target site of action is needed. Given all these attributes, we have formulated dual drug-loaded nanoliposomes with cisplatin (cis-diamminedichloroplatinum(II) (CDDP)), an effective anti-cancer drug, and diallyl disulfide (DADS), an organosulfur compound derived from garlic. The CDDP and DADS-loaded nanoliposomes (Lipo-CDDP/DADS) exhibited better physical characteristics such as size, zeta potential, polydispersity index, spherical shape, optimal stability, and satisfactory encapsulation percentage. The in vitro anti-cancer activity against MDA-MB-231 and A549 cell lines revealed that Lipo-CDDP/DADS showed significant efficacy against the cancer cell lines, depicted through cell nucleus staining. We conclude that Lipo-CDDP/DADS hold exceptional pharmacological properties with better anti-cancer activity and would serve as a promising formulation to treat various cancers.

RESUMO

Objective: When analyzing factors related to suicide, it is necessary to consider the regional characteristics of the areas where individuals live in addition to individual factors. This study aimed to investigate the spatiotemporal association between suicide rates and geographic features and the patterns of this association for all administrative areas in South Korea from 2009 to 2019. Methods: The data used in this study were obtained from the National Statistical Office of the Korean Statistical Information Service. For suicide rates, age-standardized mortality index data per 100 000 people were used. All administrative districts from 2009 to 2019 were divided into 229 regions. Emerging hotspot analysis was used for a 3-dimensional analysis to simultaneously evaluate temporal and spatial clusters. Results: In the 229 regions, there were 27 (11.8%) hotspots and 60 (26.2%) cold spots. Hotspot pattern analysis found 2 (0.9%) new spots, 1 (0.4%) persistent spot, 23 (10.0%) sporadic spots, and 1 (0.4%) oscillating spot. Conclusion: This study found geographic differences in the spatiotemporal patterns of suicide rates in South Korea. The utilization of national resources for suicide prevention should be selectively and intensively prioritized in 3 areas that exhibit unique spatiotemporal patterns.

RESUMO

Soft and stretchable force sensors are widely used for health monitoring, robotics, prosthetics, and other applications. Soft force sensors with the capability of measuring both normal and shear force could offer even greater functionality and provide more information, particularly in the field of biomechanics. In this work, a new solid-state force sensor is proposed that can measure both normal and shear forces at the same time. The soft and stretchable sensor was fabricated using an ionic liquid (IL)/polymer network. Two separate IL-based polymer membranes were used to detect normal and shear forces. Sensor architecture and electrical wiring for normal, shear, and combined sensing were developed, and various material compositions for different sensor layers were investigated to find the combination that could achieve the optimum sensor performance. A basic material formulation for carbon nanotube-based electrodes, the IL/polymer network, and polymeric insulation layers was proposed. To configure a combined (normal and shear) sensor, separate sensors for normal and shear deformations were first designed and investigated. Later, a combined sensor was fabricated using a mold via screen printing, photocuring, and thermal curing. The combined sensor was evaluated under different force conditions. The results show that the sensor can reliably measure normal and shear forces. Moreover, the findings demonstrate a way to successfully modulate the sensitivity for normal and shear sensing by varying the material composition or geometric configuration, which provides flexibility for application-specific designs.
