RESUMO

The aim of this in vivo study was to investigate the effects of a novel mycotoxin detoxifier whose formulation includes clay (bentonite and sepiolite), phytogenic feed additives (curcumin and silymarin) and postbiotics (yeast products) on the health, performance and redox status of weaned piglets under the dietary challenge of fumonisins (FUMs). The study was conducted in duplicate in the course of two independent trials on two different farms. One hundred and fifty (150) weaned piglets per trial farm were allocated into two separate groups: (a) T1 (control group): 75 weaned piglets received FUM-contaminated feed and (b) T2 (experimental group): 75 weaned piglets received FUM-contaminated feed with the mycotoxin-detoxifying agent from the day of weaning (28 days) until 70 days of age. Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARSs), protein carbonyls (CARBs) and the overall antioxidant capacity (TAC) were assessed in plasma as indicators of redox status at 45 and 70 days of age. Furthermore, mortality and performance parameters were recorded at 28, 45 and 70 days of age, while histopathological examination was performed at the end of the trial period (day 70). The results of the present study reveal the beneficial effects of supplementing a novel mycotoxin detoxifier in the diets of weaners, including improved redox status, potential hepatoprotective properties and enhanced growth performance.

Subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA) is one of the major nutritional disorders in the dairy and beef industries, leading to significant financial losses. Diagnosing SARA is challenging due to the need to evaluate multiple parameters, such as milk fat/protein ratio, ruminal lactate, and hemogram, instead of relying on a single definitive symptom or diagnostic method. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of computerized rumen colorimetry in detecting SARA in beef cattle. Over one year, 75 cattle aged 8-10 months from five farms were periodically monitored for rumen pH prior to slaughter. Samples of rumen wall and rumen content were obtained at slaughter for analysis. The study found a positive correlation coefficient between rumen pH and color components, particularly for Red (0.853) and color lightness (L) (0.862). The darkening of the rumen epithelium's color was attributed to the effect of rumen pH on the keratinized layer of the epithelium. Furthermore, an increase in the thickness of ruminal epithelium layers, particularly non-keratinized and total epithelium, was observed in animals with a history of SARA. It is possible that the lower rumen pH increases the rate of replacement of the keratinized epithelium, and the non-keratinized epithelium overgrows to compensate for the need to of produce keratinized layers. In conclusion, computerized rumen colorimetry shows promise as a reliable method for managing SARA in bovine farms by monitoring the condition in the slaughterhouse. Further research is needed to evaluate its effectiveness in detecting SARA in live animals.

Modified live virus (MLV) vaccines for the control of porcine respiratory and reproductive syndrome virus (PRRSV) have been associated with the vertical and horizontal transmission of vaccine viruses. The present study aimed to describe pathological lung lesions in piglets born by gilts vaccinated with PRRSV-1 MLV. In total, 25 gilts were vaccinated at late gestation (100th day) and were divided into five groups according to the different vaccines (Vac) used: no vaccine-control group, Vac-1-strain DV, Vac-2-strain VP-046 BIS, Vac-3-strain 94881, Vac-4-strain 96V198. Within the first 0-9 h of the farrowing, blood samples were collected from all newborn piglets and lung samples were exanimated grossly, histopathologically and with scanning electron microscopy. PRRSV (RT-PCR-positive) and antibodies were detected in the serum of piglets from gilts vaccinated with Vac-2. In these piglets, moderate to severe interstitial pneumonia with thickened alveolar septa was noticed. Type II pneumocyte hyperplasia was also observed. The rest of the trial piglets showed unremarkable lung lesions. Phylogenetic analysis revealed the 98.7% similarity of the PRRSV field strain (GR 2019-1) to the PRRS MLV vaccine strain VP-046 BIS. In conclusion, the Vac-2 PRRSV vaccine strain can act as an infectious strain when vaccination is administrated at late gestation, causing lung lesions.

This study aimed to research the involvement of enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC) and C. difficile or C. perfringens type C in the aetiology of neonatal piglet diarrhoea in Greece and to identify preventive factors for them. A total of 78 pooled faecal samples were collected randomly from 234 suckling piglets (1-4 days of age) with diarrhoea from 26 pig farms (3 piglets × 3 litters × 26 farms = 234 piglets = 78 faecal pool samples). The collected samples were initially screened for the presence of E. coli and C. difficile or C. perfringens via cultivation on MacConkey and anaerobic blood agar, respectively. Subsequently, the samples were pooled on ELUTE cards. From samples tested, 69.23% of those in the farms were ETEC F4-positive, 30.77% were ETEC F5-positive, 61.54% ETEC were F6-positive, 42.31% were ETEC F4- and E. coli enterotoxin LT-positive, 19.23% were ETEC F5- and LT-positive, 42.31% were ETEC F6- and LT-positive, while LT was found in 57.69% of those in the farms. C. difficile was involved in many cases and identified as an emerging neonatal diarrhoea etiological agent. Specifically, Toxin A of C. difficile was found in 84.62% and Toxin B in 88.46% of those in the farms. Antibiotic administration to sows in combination with probiotics or acidifiers was revealed to reduce the detection of antigens of ETEC and the enterotoxin LT of E. coli.

The Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus (PRRSV) induces apoptosis in different organs. Angiotensin II (Ang II) is the main effector of the renin-angiotensin system and participates in apoptosis. Thus, this study aimed to investigate changes in piglet serum Ang II levels following intradermal (ID) and intramuscular (IM) vaccination with a commercial PRRS modified live virus (MLV) vaccine. The trial was conducted in a commercial pig farm, including 104 piglets which were randomly allocated to four groups: Group A-Porcilis PRRS ID, Group B-Porcilis PRRS IM, Group C-Diluvac ID and Group D-Diluvac IM. The study piglets were either vaccinated or injected at 2 weeks of age and they were tested by qRT-PCR for PRRSV and by ELISA for Ang II. The results indicated differences in viremia of tested piglets at 7 weeks of age, while piglets at 10 weeks of age were all found qRT-PCR positive for PRRSV. In addition, significant differences were noticed in Ang II in 7-week-old piglets. In conclusion, the present study provides evidence that ID vaccination induces less tissue damage, based on the lower measurements of Ang II in the serum of ID vaccinated piglets.

This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of extended-spectrum ß-lactamase-producing (ESBL) bacteria in swine. Thus, 214 fecal samples were collected from suckling and weaned piglets from 34 farms in Greece (out of an overall population of about 14,300 sows). A subset of 78 (36.5%) ESBL producers were identified as E. coli (69/78, 88.5%), K. pneumoniae spp. pneumoniae (3.8%), P. mirabilis (5.1%), E. cloacae complex (1.3%) and S. enterica spp. diarizonae (1.3%). Resistance to at least one class of non-ß-lactam antibiotics was detected in 78 isolates. Among the E. coli strains, resistance was identified with regard to aminoglycosides (n = 31), fluoroquinolones (n = 49), tetracycline (n = 26) and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (n = 46). Of the three K. pneumoniae spp. pneumoniae, two displayed resistances to aminoglycosides and all were resistant to fluoroquinolones, tetracyclines and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole. As for the four P. mirabilis isolates, three had a resistant phenotype for aminoglycosides and all were resistant to imipenem, fluoroquinolones, tetracyclines and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole. Molecular characterization of the isolates revealed the presence of CTX-M, SHV and TEM genes, as well as of genes conferring resistance to fluoroquinolones, aminoglycosides, sulfonamides, trimethoprim, macrolides and colistin. High levels of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) were demonstrated in Greek swine herds posing a concern for the efficacy of treatments at the farm level as well as for public health.

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) induces apoptosis through the activation of death receptors, including cell-surface Fas receptor. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of intradermal (ID) and intramuscular (IM) vaccination with a commercial PRRSV-modified live vaccine in piglets on Fas-related apoptosis. The study included 104 suckling piglets from a commercial farrow-to-finish pig farm, suffering from positive unstable PRRSV status. Animals were assigned in four groups: group A-Porcilis PRRS ID-vaccinated pigs, group B-Porcilis PRRS IM-vaccinated pigs, group C-Diluvac ID adjuvant-administered pigs, and group D-Diluvac IM adjuvant-administered pigs. Vaccines were administered at 2 weeks of age. Blood samples were collected from the same pigs at 4, 7, and 10 weeks of age. Sera were examined by quantitative real-time reverse transcription-PCR (qRT-PCR) for PRRSV and by ELISA for soluble Fas (sFas). At 4 weeks of age, all groups were negative qRT-PCR for PRRSV; at 7 weeks only group A was negative; and at 10 weeks all groups were positive. sFas was significantly increased in groups C (4 vs. 7, 4 vs. 10, and 7 vs. 10 weeks) and D (7 vs. 10 weeks). Significant differences among groups were noticed only at 10 weeks (A vs. C, A vs. D, B vs. C, B vs. D). A significant positive and moderate correlation between PRRSV viral load and Fas level was observed. In unvaccinated piglets, increased serum sFas levels reveal apoptotic suppression compared with vaccinated piglets. In the latter, vaccine-derived antibodies limit the infection and may attribute to the reduced Fas expression, suggesting a weak induction of lymphocyte-mediated cytotoxicity.

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the potential risks of the four commercial PRRS-1 MLV vaccines in pregnant vaccinated gilts at the last stage of gestation under field conditions. The study was conducted at four pig farms, including 25 gilts from each farm (25 × 4 = 100 gilts), which were equally allocated to five different study groups. A PRRS-1 MLV vaccination was applied on the 100th day of their pregnancy with the different commercial vaccines that are available in the Greek market. The results indicated virus congenital infection and viremia in piglets (20/200 = 10% PRRSV infected piglets), and detection of PRRSV-specific antibodies (181/200 = 90.5% piglets found with PRRSV antibodies). The subsequent phylogenetic analyses revealed high percentages of similarity between the PRRSV-1 strain detected in infected litters and the PRRSV-1 vaccine strain to which the study gilts had been previously exposed to. Health status analyses of trial piglets resulted in differences between litters from vaccinated sows and litters from non-vaccinated sows at 110th day of gestation as regards the number of weak-born piglets, mummies, and piglets with splay-leg and/or respiratory symptoms. The current study's results indicate several potential dangers of the PRRS MLV vaccination in late gestation.

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) causes respiratory disease in weaning and growing pigs. A vaccination against PRRSV is one of the most important control measures. This trial aimed to evaluate the effect of the intradermal (ID) administration of a PRRSV-1 modified live virus (MLV) vaccine in comparison to the intramuscular (IM) administration on the piglets' health and performance. A total of 187 suckling piglets of a PRRSV-positive commercial farrow-to-finish farm were assigned to four groups: group A­PRRSV ID, group B­PRRSV IM, group C­control ID, and group D­control IM. At 2 weeks of age, all the study piglets were either vaccinated with a PRRSV-1 MLV vaccine or injected with the vaccine adjuvant (controls). The collected blood serum samples were tested by ELISA and qRT-PCR. The side effects, body weight (BW), average daily gain (ADG), mortality rate, and lung and pleurisy lesions scores (LLS, PLS) were also recorded. The ELISA results indicated that the vaccination induced an important seroconversion at 4 and 7 weeks. Significant differences in the qRT-PCR results were noticed only at 10 weeks in group A vs. group C (p < 0.01) and group B vs. group C (p < 0.05). High viral loads, as evidenced by the qRT-PCR Ct values, were noticed in animals of both non-vaccinated groups at 7, 10, and 13 weeks. An ID vaccination has a positive impact on the BW at the piglets' slaughter, while both an ID and IM vaccination had a positive impact on the ADG. The mortality rate was lower in vaccinated groups at the finishing stage. The LLS and PLS were significantly lower in the vaccinated groups. In conclusion, our study demonstrated that the ID vaccination of suckling piglets with a PRRSV-1 MLV vaccine has a positive effect on the piglets' health and performance, including an improved BW and a lower LLS and PLS index at their slaughter, as well as a decreased mortality rate at the growing/finishing stage.

Anaplasma phagocytophilum is the causative agent of a disease known as tick borne fever in sheep, although fever is not always present. Due to inconclusive clinical signs, diagnosis is based on the cytological or molecular detection of the microorganism in blood and/or the determination of antibodies against A. phagocytophilum. The aim of the study was to determine the alterations caused by the presence of antibodies and/or the antigen of A. phagocytophilum in the blood cell count and morphology in sheep. Cytology and indirect immunofluorescence assay were performed for detection of antibodies and the antigen of A. phagocytophilum, respectively. The samples were divided into four groups depending on the result of the antigen and antibody detection. The samples that were only positive for antigen detection had mild anemia, leukopenia (lymphopenia), and thrombocytopenia. The samples that were positive in both assays had anemia, leukopenia (neutropenia and lymphopenia), and thrombocytopenia. Samples that were positive only for antibody detection had mild leukopenia. Morphological findings in infected sheep included band neutrophils, toxic neutrophils, reactive lymphocytes, and activated monocytes. The hematological findings along with cytological and serological tests can contribute to the assessment of the stage of the disease. A combination of leukopenia and thrombocytopenia raises a strong suspicion of the disease. When the microorganism and antibodies are simultaneously present, sheep are more susceptible to secondary complications. The first reported morphological findings and the quantitative hematological alterations are indicative of an inflammatory reaction, antigenic stimulation, and stress.

Trichinellosis is an important zoonosis and the most common source of human infection is meat from pigs and wild boars. The European Union (EU) supports alternative pig production systems (organic and free-ranging) as sustainable farming systems. However, these systems that allow outdoor access for farm animals, may create new or reintroduce old risks to public health. During the last years, alternative pig production systems (free-ranging or organic pig) are growing in popularity in Greece due to the increasing interest of consumers for organic products. The majority of the trichinellosis outbreaks in the EU were associated with pork and meat products including wild boars. In Greece, from 2009 to 2012, 37 Trichinella spp. positive free-ranging pigs were reported in free-ranging pig farms of Northern-Eastern Greece (31 were identified as T. britovi). The recent re-emerging present of the Trichinella spp. infections in free-ranging pigs and wild boars are a high risk for the consumers and should alarm the Public Health Authorities in Greece and the EU. During the last years, the organic or free-ranging pig production systems are growing in popularity in the EU. However, these systems increase the risk of Trichinella spp. infections, since pigs are possible to be infected by feeding on carcasses or the offal of hunted or dead wild animals. For this reason, it is important for Public Health Authorities to be focused on the training of hunters and farmers in order to avoid the transmission among free-ranging pigs and prevent the cases of human infection.

Genotype 2 strains of Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus (PRRSV-2) have been reported sporadically in Europe. Even if, PRRSV-2 reported to be genetically homogenous in Europe due to the introduction of an MLV vaccine strain, independent introductions of PRRSV-2 field strains have been reported. The aim of the present study was to report the complete genome sequence and evaluate the histopathological lesions of a PRRSV-2 strain, isolated for the first time in Greece. During a routine blood sampling in a commercial pig farm, the results revealed positive samples in weaners of 40-60 days for the PRRSV-2, using real-time polymerase chain reaction. The clinical picture was characterized from respiratory symptoms in weaners, as well as coughing and poor performance at finishing stage and less than 3% mortality rate from weaning stage to finishing stage. The use of ORF5 for PRRSV phylogenetic analysis of the isolated PRRSV strain, named "x1544-1 strain", was successfully determined, belonging to the genotype PRRSV-2. Comparison of the obtained sequence revealed nucleotide sequence identity >98% with PRRSV-2 strain VR2332 and other related strains from Denmark and China. The histopathological evaluation revealed diffuse interstitial pneumonia, multifocal interstitial nephritis, while in the lymphoid organs, follicular and paracortical hyperplasia, coexisting with necrosis and depletion of germ cells were detected. The results of current study undersign the importance for veterinary practitioners to have up-to-date access to phylogenetic data linked to phenotypic information to follow-up the control and prevention strategies against PRRSV.

BACKGROUND: Manual evaluation of blood cell counts on stained blood films is a common procedure in resource-limited laboratories of farm animal clinics. Moreover, settings for sheep blood cell counts are not provided on most veterinary hematology analyzers. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to (a) compare the results of white blood cell (WBC) counts evaluated microscopically on ovine blood smears with those obtained by the ADVIA 120 hematology analyzer and validate appropriate correction factors for the manual technique; and (b) assess the two suggested factors to calculate platelet counts on blood smears in sheep. METHODS: The blood samples of 57 sheep were used to generate a regression equation between the average WBC count per field and the WBC count determined using the ADVIA 120 analyzer. Thirty-one new ovine samples were used to assess the agreement between the calculated WBC counts based on a generated equation and those obtained by the analyzer using the Passing-Bablok test and Bland-Altman plots. Similarly, agreements between platelet counts using two different factors for platelet calculation were assessed using the Bland-Altman plot. RESULTS: The average bias of calculated WBC counts was 0.4%, with precision and accuracy being over 95%. Regarding calculated platelet counts, Bland-Altman plots revealed a bias of 26.4% and 1.4% when the average number of platelets per field was multiplied by 15 000 and 20 000, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Microscopic WBC counting in ovine blood is a reliable alternative to automated analyses using the generated equation. A better agreement between the two methods was observed when a factor of 20 000 was used to calculate platelet counts in ovine blood smears.

We performed a survey aimed at analyzing milk samples collected from cows with mastitis for the presence of extended-spectrum ß-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli. Single-quarter mastitic milk samples obtained from 400 cows in 23 Greek dairy herds with a history of E. coli mastitis were processed for the selective isolation of ESBL-producing E. coli. The antimicrobial susceptibility of the ESBL-producing isolates was analyzed using agar disk diffusion, and minimum inhibitory concentrations of colistin were determined by broth microdilution. We used PCR followed by DNA sequencing to characterize the ß-lactamases and mcr-1 (colistin resistance) genes, and for phylotyping and multilocus sequence typing. We found a total of 89/400 (22.25%) E. coli isolates from 12/23 (52%) farms. Six isolates originating from 6 cows on a single farm were ESBL producers and were resistant to cefquinome, amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, aztreonam, ampicillin, and colistin. Five of these isolates were resistant to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, and 5 to streptomycin. The 6 ESBL producers were mcr-1-positive and carried blaTEM-1 genes; 3 also carried blaCTX-M genes, and 3 carried blaSHV genes. All of the ESBL producers belonged to phylogroup A, multilocus sequence type ST666 (n = 5), or a single locus variant of ST666 (n = 1). To our knowledge, this is the first report of endemic bovine mastitis caused by mcr-1-positive, ESBL-producing E. coli. These results highlight the value of active surveillance of antimicrobial resistance not commonly tested by diagnostic laboratories for the early detection of novel resistant strains.

Blood samples from 2620 dogs living in 7 different areas were used for the detection of antibodies against Ehrlichia canis and Borrelia burgdorferi and Dirofilaria immitis antigen. Previously published seropositivity data against Leishmania infantum from the same samples were also used to identify multiple-pathogen seropositivity. The associations between seropositivity against each pathogen and gender, age, utility, hair length, and region of residence were evaluated by multivariate logistic regression analyses. The prevalence of seropositivity against E. canis, B. burgdorferi, and D. immitis was 12.25%, 2.23%, and 5.96%, respectively. Double- and triple-pathogen seropositivity was detected in seven different combinations. Age and region of residence were strongly associated with seropositivity against all pathogens. The association between seropositivity and the area of residence highlights the need for regular testing of dogs for vector-borne pathogens in areas with similar conditions to define control measures.

This case study report describes a transmissible gastroenteritis coronavirus (TGEV) infection presented in a commercial pig herd. The clinical signs of infection appeared in newborn piglets, including medium morbidity and low mortality rates. Rectal swabs were collected from five different affected litters for laboratory examinations. Samples from two dead piglets and two euthanized affected piglets were collected for gross and histopathological examinations. All fecal samples were tested TGEV positive by real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Necropsy revealed nonspecific gross lesions. The histopathological examinations revealed villi fused with denuded tips and severe villus atrophy, leading to extensive epithelial flattening in middle and lower small intestine. The architecture pattern of villi presented columnar and cuboidal poorly differentiated enterocytes with mild subepithelial edema. In some enterocytes, pycnotic nuclei were detected. Microscopic examination of brain tissue revealed diffuse gliosis in the area of pia matter with mild congestion of the meningeal and parenchymal vessels and neuronal degeneration. In conclusion, this case study reported an epidemic TGEV infection in piglets, characterized by low mortality and medium morbidity rates accompanied by typical histopathological lesions in small intestine, as well as by coexisting brain lesions, that are described for the first time.

The aim of this trial was to evaluate the in vivo effectiveness of injectable antibiotics of one- or two-dose administration on recovery of acute App (Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae)-infected pigs. Ninety pigs with moderate general clinical score (GCS) of a commercial farm, suffering from acute App infection, were divided in two groups: (a) T1: one administration of gamithromycin injectable solution and (b) T2: two administrations of florfenicol injectable solution. Morbidity/mortality, clinical scores (clinical appearance score index-CAS, clinical respiratory score-CRS, clinical cough score index [CCS], general respiratory clinical score-GCRS, and general clinical score-GCS), body temperature score (BTS), and posttreatment interval were recorded. The carcass weight and lung scoring were estimated, based on slaughterhouse pleurisy evaluation system score, lung lobes score, and pneumonia area. The results of this study indicated that the tested antibiotics are efficacious for the recovery of acute App-affected pigs. Quicker improvement of BTS in sick pigs (at day 1 and 2) and quicker recovery of clinical signs, based on the improvement of clinical parameters (CAS, CCS, GCRS, GCS on day 2 and 3, and CRS on day 2), were noticed in T1 group. In conclusion, the use of tested antibiotics in acute App-affected pigs is an effective strategy for the control of an acute outbreak.

The purpose of this case report is to describe for the first time concurrent porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) and porcine circovirus 2 (PCV-2) infections in a commercial farrow-to-finish pig farm in Albania, as well as the phylogenetical analysis of isolated PRRSV strain. The present study reports on a farrow-to-finish commercial pig farm, located in South Albania. In a percentage of about 40% of weaners in each batch (60-70 piglets per batch), clinical signs, including fever, severe respiratory signs, wasting, jaundice, rough hairy coat, palpable inguinal lymphadenopathy, and high mortality rate, were performed. The clinical signs of sows included sporadic premature farrowings (22%), with increased number of stillbirth (3.3%) and weak piglets (4.1%) based on the record system of the farm. Blood samples were obtained from 8 sows (4 lactating and 4 dry-period sows), 25 piglets of 5 different batches (5 at 15-20 days, 5 at 40 days, 5 at 50 days, 5 of 60 days, and 5 of 70 days), and 5 finishers of 130-150 days of age. Moreover, tissue samples were collected from five weaners at 20-70 days of age. Histopathological examination of lung and lymph node sections revealed findings compatible with PRRSV and PCV-2 infection. Pigs between 15 and 130-140 days of age were positive for type 1 (European) PRRSV and pigs between 50 and 130-140 days of age were positive for PCV-2. Blood serum samples were tested by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for PCV-2 and one real-time reverse transcription-PCR-positive sample was selected for subsequent complete ORF5 (Gp5) gene sequencing. The results of this case report confirm the detection of PRRSV and PCV-2 concurrent infection in an Albanian farrow-to-finish pig farm. The full-length ORF5 sequence of the detected PRRSV strain (named "Mursi/AL/15") was successfully determined, revealing high nucleotide identity with other type 1 European isolates.

BACKGROUND: Urine pH is an integral part of a complete urinalysis, and is commonly measured in veterinary practice using semiquantitative reagent strips. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare the urine pH of dogs and sheep, using visual interpretation of dipstick reactions, and using a pH-meter as the reference method. Agreement between the 2 methods was also assessed. An additional objective was to compare the urine pH before and after centrifugation. METHODS: A total of 50 voided urine samples from sheep and 52 from dogs were collected into sterile containers. For pH measurements, 2 methods were used, a pH-meter and urine dipstick reagent pads. Measurements were performed using urine samples before (whole urine) and after centrifugation (urine supernatant). For comparison of the 2 methods, Passing and Bablok regression analysis and Bland-Altman plots were used. RESULTS: The equation created to assess agreement between the 2 methods in dogs showed a constant bias at -0.14 and a positive proportional bias at 0.98. From a clinical standpoint, total bias was below and above the maximum acceptable bias in sheep and dogs, respectively. Clinically acceptable bias was also found using centrifuged urine samples in sheep, but the urine pH values before and after centrifugation were nearly identical in dogs. CONCLUSION: Urine dipstick reagent pads and pH-meters can be used interchangeably to determine urine pH in sheep without needing centrifugation. In contrast, pH-meters provide more accurate pH measurements than urine dipstick pads in canine urine, which is not improved by centrifugation.

We characterised the causative agents of cerebral and non-cerebral coenurosis in livestock by determining the mitochondrial genotypes and morphological phenotypes of 52 Taenia multiceps isolates from a wide geographical range in Europe, Africa, and western Asia. Three studies were conducted: (1) a morphological comparison of the rostellar hooks of cerebral and non-cerebral cysts of sheep and goats, (2) a morphological comparison of adult worms experimentally produced in dogs, and (3) a molecular analysis of three partial mitochondrial genes (nad1, cox1, and 12S rRNA) of the same isolates. No significant morphological or genetic differences were associated with the species of the intermediate host. Adult parasites originating from cerebral and non-cerebral cysts differed morphologically, e.g. the shape of the small hooks and the distribution of the testes in the mature proglottids. The phylogenetic analysis of the mitochondrial haplotypes produced three distinct clusters: one cluster including both cerebral isolates from Greece and non-cerebral isolates from tropical and subtropical countries, and two clusters including cerebral isolates from Greece. The majority of the non-cerebral specimens clustered together but did not form a monophyletic group. No monophyletic groups were observed based on geography, although specimens from the same region tended to cluster. The clustering indicates high intraspecific diversity. The phylogenetic analysis suggests that all variants of T. multiceps can cause cerebral coenurosis in sheep (which may be the ancestral phenotype), and some variants, predominantly from one genetic cluster, acquired the additional capacity to produce non-cerebral forms in goats and more rarely in sheep.
