RESUMO

With excellent energy resolution and ultralow-level radiogenic backgrounds, the high-purity germanium detectors in the Majorana Demonstrator enable searches for several classes of exotic dark matter (DM) models. In this work, we report new experimental limits on keV-scale sterile neutrino DM via the transition magnetic moment from conversion to active neutrinos ν_{s}→ν_{a}. We report new limits on fermionic dark matter absorption (χ+A→ν+A) and sub-GeV DM-nucleus 3→2 scattering (χ+χ+A→ϕ+A), and new exclusion limits for bosonic dark matter (axionlike particles and dark photons). These searches utilize the (1-100)-keV low-energy region of a 37.5-kg y exposure collected by the Demonstrator between May 2016 and November 2019 using a set of ^{76}Ge-enriched detectors whose surface exposure time was carefully controlled, resulting in extremely low levels of cosmogenic activation.

Various theories beyond the Standard Model predict new particles with masses in the sub-eV range with very weak couplings to ordinary matter. A new P-odd and T-odd interaction between polarized and unpolarized nucleons proportional to s⃗⋅r̂ is one such possibility, where r⃗=rr̂ is the spatial vector connecting the nucleons, and s⃗ is the spin of the polarized nucleon. Such an interaction involving a scalar coupling gsN at one vertex and a pseudoscalar coupling gpn at the polarized nucleon vertex can be induced by the exchange of spin-0 pseudoscalar bosons. We describe a new technique to search for interactions of this form and present the first measurements of this type. We show that future improvements to this technique can improve the laboratory upper bound on the product gsNgpn by two orders of magnitude for interaction ranges at the 100 micron scale.

^{180m}Ta is a rare nuclear isomer whose decay has never been observed. Its remarkably long lifetime surpasses the half-lives of all other known ß and electron capture decays due to the large K-spin differences and small energy differences between the isomeric and lower-energy states. Detecting its decay presents a significant experimental challenge but could shed light on neutrino-induced nucleosynthesis mechanisms, the nature of dark matter, and K-spin violation. For this study, we repurposed the Majorana Demonstrator, an experimental search for the neutrinoless double-beta decay of ^{76}Ge using an array of high-purity germanium detectors, to search for the decay of ^{180m}Ta. More than 17 kg, the largest amount of tantalum metal ever used for such a search, was installed within the ultralow-background detector array. In this Letter, we present results from the first year of Ta data taking and provide an updated limit for the ^{180m}Ta half-life on the different decay channels. With new limits up to 1.5×10^{19} yr, we improved existing limits by 1-2 orders of magnitude which are the most sensitive searches for a single ß and electron capture decay ever achieved. Over all channels, the decay can be excluded for T_{1/2}<0.29×10^{18} yr.

The Majorana Demonstrator searched for neutrinoless double-ß decay (0νßß) of ^{76}Ge using modular arrays of high-purity Ge detectors operated in vacuum cryostats in a low-background shield. The arrays operated with up to 40.4 kg of detectors (27.2 kg enriched to ∼88% in ^{76}Ge). From these measurements, the Demonstrator has accumulated 64.5 kg yr of enriched active exposure. With a world-leading energy resolution of 2.52 keV FWHM at the 2039 keV Q_{ßß} (0.12%), we set a half-life limit of 0νßß in ^{76}Ge at T_{1/2}>8.3×10^{25} yr (90% C.L.). This provides a range of upper limits on m_{ßß} of (113-269) meV (90% C.L.), depending on the choice of nuclear matrix elements.

RESUMO

The Majorana Demonstrator neutrinoless double-beta decay experiment comprises a 44 kg (30 kg enriched in ^{76}Ge) array of p-type, point-contact germanium detectors. With its unprecedented energy resolution and ultralow backgrounds, Majorana also searches for rare event signatures from beyond standard model physics in the low energy region below 100 keV. In this Letter, we test the continuous spontaneous localization (CSL) model, one of the mathematically well-motivated wave function collapse models aimed at solving the long-standing unresolved quantum mechanical measurement problem. While the CSL predicts the existence of a detectable radiation signature in the x-ray domain, we find no evidence of such radiation in the 19-100 keV range in a 37.5 kg-y enriched germanium exposure collected between December 31, 2015, and November 27, 2019, with the Demonstrator. We explored both the non-mass-proportional (n-m-p) and the mass-proportional (m-p) versions of the CSL with two different assumptions: that only the quasifree electrons can emit the x-ray radiation and that the nucleus can coherently emit an amplified radiation. In all cases, we set the most stringent upper limit to date for the white CSL model on the collapse rate, λ, providing a factor of 40-100 improvement in sensitivity over comparable searches. Our limit is the most stringent for large parts of the allowed parameter space. If the result is interpreted in terms of the Diòsi-Penrose gravitational wave function collapse model, the lower bound with a 95% confidence level is almost an order of magnitude improvement over the previous best limit.

Axions were originally proposed to explain the strong-CP problem in QCD. Through axion-photon coupling, the Sun could be a major source of axions, which could be measured in solid state detection experiments with enhancements due to coherent Primakoff-Bragg scattering. The Majorana Demonstrator experiment has searched for solar axions with a set of ^{76}Ge-enriched high purity germanium detectors using a 33 kg-yr exposure collected between January, 2017 and November, 2019. A temporal-energy analysis gives a new limit on the axion-photon coupling as g_{aγ}<1.45×10^{-9} GeV^{-1} (95% confidence level) for axions with mass up to 100 eV/c^{2}. This improves laboratory-based limits between about 1 eV/c^{2} and 100 eV/c^{2}.

P-type point contact (PPC) HPGe detectors are a leading technology for rare event searches due to their excellent energy resolution, low thresholds, and multi-site event rejection capabilities. We have characterized a PPC detector's response to α particles incident on the sensitive passivated and p + surfaces, a previously poorly-understood source of background. The detector studied is identical to those in the Majorana Demonstrator experiment, a search for neutrinoless double-beta decay ( 0 ν ß ß ) in 76 Ge. α decays on most of the passivated surface exhibit significant energy loss due to charge trapping, with waveforms exhibiting a delayed charge recovery (DCR) signature caused by the slow collection of a fraction of the trapped charge. The DCR is found to be complementary to existing methods of α identification, reliably identifying α background events on the passivated surface of the detector. We demonstrate effective rejection of all surface α events (to within statistical uncertainty) with a loss of only 0.2% of bulk events by combining the DCR discriminator with previously-used methods. The DCR discriminator has been used to reduce the background rate in the 0 ν ß ß region of interest window by an order of magnitude in the Majorana Demonstrator  and will be used in the upcoming LEGEND-200 experiment.

The Majorana Demonstrator is an ultralow-background experiment searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay in ^{76}Ge. The heavily shielded array of germanium detectors, placed nearly a mile underground at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota, also allows searches for new exotic physics. Free, relativistic, lightly ionizing particles with an electrical charge less than e are forbidden by the standard model but predicted by some of its extensions. If such particles exist, they might be detected in the Majorana Demonstrator by searching for multiple-detector events with individual-detector energy depositions down to 1 keV. This search is background-free, and no candidate events have been found in 285 days of data taking. New direct-detection limits are set for the flux of lightly ionizing particles for charges as low as e/1000.

The Majorana Collaboration is operating an array of high purity Ge detectors to search for neutrinoless double-ß decay in ^{76}Ge. The Majorana Demonstrator comprises 44.1 kg of Ge detectors (29.7 kg enriched in ^{76}Ge) split between two modules contained in a low background shield at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota. Here we present results from data taken during construction, commissioning, and the start of full operations. We achieve unprecedented energy resolution of 2.5 keV FWHM at Q_{ßß} and a very low background with no observed candidate events in 9.95 kg yr of enriched Ge exposure, resulting in a lower limit on the half-life of 1.9×10^{25} yr (90% C.L.). This result constrains the effective Majorana neutrino mass to below 240-520 meV, depending on the matrix elements used. In our experimental configuration with the lowest background, the background is 4.0_{-2.5}^{+3.1} counts/(FWHM t yr).

We present new limits on exotic keV-scale physics based on 478 kg d of Majorana Demonstrator commissioning data. Constraints at the 90% confidence level are derived on bosonic dark matter (DM) and solar axion couplings, Pauli exclusion principle violating (PEPV) decay, and electron decay using monoenergetic peak signal limits above our background. Our most stringent DM constraints are set for 11.8 keV mass particles, limiting g_{Ae}<4.5×10^{-13} for pseudoscalars and (α^{'}/α)<9.7×10^{-28} for vectors. We also report a 14.4 keV solar axion coupling limit of g_{AN}^{eff}×g_{Ae}<3.8×10^{-17}, a 1/2ß^{2}<8.5×10^{-48} limit on the strength of PEPV electron transitions, and a lower limit on the electron lifetime of τ_{e}>1.2×10^{24} yr for e^{-}→ invisible.

This study revealed that low-dose aliskiren treatment could attenuate proteinuria by interrupting the renin-angiotensin system in mice with lupus nephritis, and the beneficial effect was beyond blood pressure control. An in and ex vivo fluorescence imaging (using a non-invasion in vivo imaging system) showed intense labeling of renin in the kidneys of female MRL/lpr mice. In the study, Alzet mini-osmotic pumps were implanted into 6-week-old female MRL/lpr mice. Pumps were filled with either phosphate-buffered saline or a solution of aliskiren dissolved in phosphate-buffered saline (20 mg/kg/day) and replaced at 28-day intervals. Mice were sacrificed at four and eight weeks. To label cells for DNA synthesis, bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) (50 mg/kg) was injected intraperitoneally an hour prior to sacrifice. The level of renin inhibition was adequate, as aliskiren-treated mice demonstrated higher renal renin mRNA expression than controls (p < 0.05). Although there were no significant differences in the systolic blood pressure (control versus aliskiren-treated: 127.20 ± 4.44 mmHg versus 103.80 ± 7.40 mmHg, p > 0.05) and heart rate (control versus aliskiren-treated: 680.50 ± 11.71 versus 647.80 ± 13.90, p > 0.05) of both groups after eight weeks, there was significant reduction of inflammatory cytokines (transforming growth factor-beta1, regulated on activation normal T cell expressed, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 and osteopontin, p < 0.05), reduction of innate immunity (toll-like receptor 7, p < 0.05), as well as a reduction of glomerular proliferation and inflammation (BrdU-, CD45-, CD3- and F4/80-positive glomerular cells, p < 0.01) after aliskiren infusion, which might translate into an improvement in proteinuria (control versus aliskiren-treated: 493.7 versus 843.7 mg/g, p < 0.01) or weight gain (control versus aliskiren-treated: 5.65 ± 1.61 versus 8.67 ± 0.97%, p < 0.05).

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) prophylaxis is under-utilized in Asia because of the misconception that its incidence is lower in Asians as compared to the Caucasians. The available data on VTE in Asia is limited due to the lack of well-designed multicenter randomized controlled trials as well as non-standardized research designs, making data comparison difficult. Emerging data indicates that the VTE incidence is not low in Asia, and is comparable to that reported in the Western literature in some instances. There is also a trend towards increasing incidence of VTE, as demonstrated by a number of hospital-based studies in Asia. This could be attributed to lifestyle changes, ageing population, increasing awareness of VTE and wider availability of Duplex ultrasound. The risk of VTE in hospitalized patients remain the same in Asians and Caucasians, even though there may be factors that are inherent to patients in Asia that influence the slight variation in incidence. The utilization rate of VTE prophylaxis remains suboptimal in Asia. The Asian Venous Thrombosis Forum (AVTF) comprises participants from various countries such as China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and experts from Australia and Europe. The forum evaluated the available data on VTE from the Asian region and formulated guidelines tailored to meet the needs of the region. We recommend that serious considerations are given to VTE prophylaxis especially in the at-risk group and a formal hospital policy be established to facilitate the implementation. On admission to the hospital, we recommend assessing the patients for both VTE and bleeding risk. We recommend mechanical prophylaxis for patients at increased risk of bleeding and utilizing it as an adjunctive measure in combination with pharmacological prophylaxis in patients with high risk of VTE. For patients undergoing general or gynecological surgery and with moderate risk for VTE, we recommend prophylaxis with one of the following: low dose unfractionated heparin (LDUH), low molecular weight heparin (LMWH), fondaparinux or intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC). For the same group of patients at high risk of VTE, we recommend pharmacological or combination of pharmacological and mechanical prophylaxis. For patients undergoing major orthopedic surgeries like total hip replacement, total knee replacement and proximal hip fracture surgery, we recommend using one of the following: LMWH, fondaparinux, rivaroxaban, apixaban, edoxaban, dabigatran, warfarin or aspirin with IPC. For patients admitted to the hospital with acute medical illness and has moderate risk of VTE, we recommend prophylaxis with LDUH, LMWH or Fondaparinux. For the same group at high risk of VTE, we recommend combination of pharmacological and mechanical prophylaxis.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have demonstrated that the lack of lumican delayed corneal wound healing in lumican-null (Lum(-/-) ) mice. This defect is rescued by the addition of glycosylated lumican core protein to the injured corneas. OBJECTIVES: We examined the hypothesis that lumican is also required for the healing of cutaneous wounds using Lum(-/-) mice. METHODS: We demonstrated the basic thinner skin phenotypes in Lum(-/-) mice at different time points and the changes in arrangement of collagen fibres by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). A full skin thickness wound was generated by punch biopsy (6 mm diameter) in experimental Lum(-/-) and wild-type mice. The closure of injured skin was measured after various periods of time (3, 6, 12, 18 days). Specimens of injured and uninjured skin (serving as control) were then subjected to morphological examination with haematoxylin and eosin and Masson trichrome stains, and by TEM. Immunohistochemical staining with anti-CD68 antibody was used to assess the presence of macrophages in injured skin healing for various periods of time. Semiquantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was used to elucidate the transforming growth factor (TGF)-ß1-induced myofibroblast phenotypic genes. RESULTS: Skin of adult Lum(-/-) mice (3 months and older) was much thinner (40% less) than that of age-matched wild-type mice. This phenomenon was aggravated in older mice. TEM revealed disoriented and irregular collagen fibrils in the dermis of Lum(-/-) mice. Delayed wound healing with an increase in inflammatory macrophages was compatible with the delayed response of the expression of TGF-ß1, type I collagen α1 and fibronectin at the mRNA level by semiquantitative RT-PCR in the Lum(-/-) mice. CONCLUSIONS: Our data demonstrate that lumican plays pivotal roles in skin collagen fibrillogenesis and wound healing.

This study describes a case of exercise-induced myocardial ischaemia accompanied by complete atrioventricular block (CAVB). A 59-year-old man with major depression, treated with regular imipramine and lithium for 20 years, experienced syncope episodes during exercise. Exercise, testing initially, identified ST depression in the inferior leads, and later found CAVB resulting in syncope and seizure. The patient recovered completely after resuscitation. Myocardial ischaemic markers were negative, but 35% stenosis was detected in the distal left main coronary artery by angiography. The combined use of verapamil, nitrate and aspirin was treated as the possible coronary spasm. Repeat treadmill caused negative ischaemic study or exercise-induced arrhythmia, 7 days later. The pathophysiology of the very rare exercise-induced paroxysmal CAVB has been reviewed.

Fusarium solani keratitis is a rare ocular infectious disease. The clinical characteristics and treatment methods of 18 patients with culture proven F. solani keratitis between July 1997 and December 2003 and with a follow-up period of more than 4 months were analysed retrospectively. The patients were divided into two groups based on the severity of keratitis. Group A (n = 13) displayed non-severe keratitis and were treated with debridement, lamellar keratectomy and antifungal medication. Group B (n = 5) displayed severe keratomycosis and were treated with lamellar keratectomy combined with amniotic membrane transplantation (AMT) and antifungal medication. In group A, wound healing did not interfere with the integrity of the anterior chamber. The mean re-epithelialisation time was 12.67 days (range: 5-21 days). All patients were free of major immediate postoperative complications. In group B, AMT preserved the anterior chamber integrity in two cases, but failed to do so in the other three cases. Therapeutic patch grafts were required in these three cases. Non-severe F. solani keratitis is best treated with superficial keratectomy. Timely AMT combined with lamellar keratectomy appears to be an adjuvant therapy for severe keratomycosis and avoiding emergent therapeutic penetrating keratoplasty. However, AMT was effective in cases involving non-suppurative Fusarium keratitis.

Aneurysm of the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) is rare. We, in this study, present the case of a 21-year-old woman with a history of heroin abuse who was admitted to our hospital for infective endocarditis complicated by floating vegetation at the posterior mitral valve. After receiving 2-week antibiotic treatment, the patient had acute abdominal pain. Computed tomography demonstrated an aneurysm at the SMA. The mycotic aneurysm was resected and the mitral valve was repaired successfully. This report reviews the pathophysiology of mycotic aneurysms of the SMA and role of computed tomography in the differential diagnosis of this condition from acute mesenteric ischaemia.
