RESUMO

Taiwan's experience with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) in 2003 guided its development of strategies to defend against SARS-CoV-2 in 2020, which enabled the successful control of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases from 2020 through March 2021. However, in late-April 2021, the imported Alpha variant began to cause COVID-19 outbreaks at an exceptional rate in Taiwan. In this study, we aimed to determine what epidemiological conditions enabled the SARS-CoV-2 Alpha variant strains to become dominant and decline later during a surge in the outbreak. In conjunction with contact-tracing investigations, we used our bioinformatics software, CoVConvert and IniCoV, to analyze whole-genome sequences of 101 Taiwan Alpha strains. Univariate and multivariable regression analyses revealed the epidemiological factors associated with viral dominance. Univariate analysis showed the dominant Alpha strains were preferentially selected in the surge's epicenter (p = 0.0024) through intensive human-to-human contact and maintained their dominance for 1.5 months until the Zero-COVID Policy was implemented. Multivariable regression found that the epidemic periods (p = 0.007) and epicenter (p = 0.001) were two significant factors associated with the dominant virus strains spread in the community. These dominant virus strains emerged at the outbreak's epicenter with frequent human-to-human contact and low vaccination coverage. The Level 3 Restrictions and Zero-COVID policy successfully controlled the outbreak in the community without city lockdowns. Our integrated method can identify the epidemiological conditions for emerging dominant virus with increasing epidemiological potential and support decision makers in rapidly containing outbreaks using public health measures that target fast-spreading virus strains.

BACKGROUND: Long terminal repeat (LTR)-retrotransposons (LTR-RTs) are ubiquitous and make up the majority of nearly all sequenced plant genomes, whereas their pivotal roles in genome evolution, gene expression regulation as well as their epigenetic regulation are still not well understood, especially in a large number of closely related species. RESULTS: Here, we analyzed the abundance and dynamic evolution of LTR-RTs in 54 species from an economically and agronomically important family, Fabaceae, and also selected two representative species for further analysis in expression of associated genes, transcriptional activity and DNA methylation patterns of LTR-RTs. Annotation results revealed highly varied proportions of LTR-RTs in these genomes (5.1%~68.4%) and their correlation with genome size was highly positive, and they were significantly contributed to the variance in genome size through species-specific unique amplifications. Almost all of the intact LTR-RTs were inserted into the genomes 4 Mya (million years ago), and more than 50% of them were inserted in the last 0.5 million years, suggesting that recent amplifications of LTR-RTs were an important force driving genome evolution. In addition, expression levels of genes with intronic, promoter, and downstream LTR-RT insertions of Glycine max and Vigna radiata, two agronomically important crops in Fabaceae, showed that the LTR-RTs located in promoter or downstream regions suppressed associated gene expression. However, the LTR-RTs within introns promoted gene expression or had no contribution to gene expression. Additionally, shorter and younger LTR-RTs maintained higher mobility and transpositional potential. Compared with the transcriptionally silent LTR-RTs, the active elements showed significantly lower DNA methylation levels in all three contexts. The distributions of transcriptionally active and silent LTR-RT methylation varied across different lineages due to the position of LTR-RTs located or potentially epigenetic regulation. CONCLUSION: Lineage-specific amplification patterns were observed and higher methylation level may repress the activity of LTR-RTs, further influence evolution in Fabaceae species. This study offers valuable clues into the evolution, function, transcriptional activity and epigenetic regulation of LTR-RTs in Fabaceae genomes.

Although molecular piezoelectric materials are ideal constituents for next-generation electronic microdevices, their weak piezoelectric coefficients which restrict their practical applications need to be enhanced by some strategies. Herein, a series of d-phenylalanine derivatives are synthesized and an increased molecular piezoelectric coefficient of their assemblies is achieved by acid doping. The acid doping can increase the asymmetric distribution of charges in the molecules and in turn molecular polarizability, leading to the enhanced molecular piezoelectricity of assemblies. The effective piezoelectric coefficients can be promoted up to 38.5 pm V-1 and four times those without doping, which is also higher than those obtained by the reported methods. Moreover, the piezoelectric energy harvesters can generate voltage up to 3.4 V and current up to 80 nA. This practical strategy can enhance piezoelectric coefficients without varying the crystal structures of the assemblies, which may inspire future molecular design of organic functional materials.

Transglutaminase (TG, EC 2.3.2.13) is widely used to modify functional properties in food systems, which can catalyze cross-linking reaction of proteins. In this work, microbial transglutaminase (MTG) from Streptomyces netropsis was heterologously expressed in the methylotrophic yeast Komagataella phaffii (Pichia pastoris). The specific activity of recombinant microbial transglutaminase (RMTG) was 26.17 ± 1.26 U/mg, and the optimum pH and temperature were measured as 7.0 and 50 °C, respectively. Bovine serum albumin (BSA) was used as a substrate to evaluate the effect of cross-linking reaction, and we found that RMTG had significant (p < 0.05) cross-linking effect for more than 30 min reactions. RMTG was further utilized in the investigation of plant-based chicken nuggets. Results showed that the hardness, springiness and chewiness of nuggets increased, and the adhesiveness decreased after RMTG treatment, which can prove that RMTG has the potential to improve the texture properties of plant-based chicken nuggets.

Bacterial infections and oxidative damage caused by various reactive oxygen species (ROS) pose a significant threat to human health. It is highly desirable to find an ideal biomaterial system with broad spectrum antibacterial and antioxidant capabilities. A new supramolecular antibacterial and antioxidant composite hydrogel made of chiral L-phenylalanine-derivative (LPFEG) as matrix and Mxene (Ti3 C2 Tx ) as filler material is presented. The noncovalent interactions (H-bonding and π-π interactions) in between LPFEG and Mxene and the inversion of LPFEG chirality are verified by Fourier transform infrared and circular dichroism spectroscopy. The composite hydrogels show improved mechanical properties revealed by rheological analysis. The composite hydrogel system exhibits photothermal conversion efficiency (40.79%), which enables effective photothermal broad-spectrum antibacterial activities against both Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa) bacteria. Furthermore, the Mxene also enables the composite hydrogel to exhibit excellent antioxidant activity by efficiently scavenging free radicals like DPPH•, ABTS•+, and •OH. These results indicate that the Mxene-based chiral supramolecular composite hydrogel, with improved rheological, antibacterial, and antioxidant properties has a great potential for biomedical applications.

Revascularization plays a critical role in the healing of diabetic wounds. Accumulation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) and refractory multidrug resistant bacterial infection are the two major barriers to revascularization, directly leading to impaired healing of diabetic wounds. Here, an artfully designed chiral gel dressing is fabricated (named as HA-LM2-RMR), which consists of l-phenylalanine and cationic hexapeptide coassembled helical nanofibers cross-linked with hyaluronic acid via hydrogen bonding. This chiral gel possesses abundant chiral and cationic sites, not only effectively reducing AGEs via stereoselective interaction but also specifically killing multidrug resistant bacteria rather than host cells since cationic hexapeptides selectively interact with negatively charged microbial membrane. Surprisingly, the HA-LM2-RMR fibers present an attractive ability to activate sprouted angiogenesis of Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells by upregulating VEGF and OPA1 expression. In comparison with clinical Prontosan Wound Gel, the HA-LM2-RMR gel presents superior healing efficiency in the infected diabetic wound with respect to angiogenesis and re-epithelialization, shortening the healing period from 21 days to 14 days. These findings for chiral wound dressing provide insights for the design and construction of diabetic wound dressings that target revascularization, which holds great potential to be utilized in tissue regenerative medicine.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the clinical effect of electroacupuncture at Baliao points in patients with erectile dysfunction after stroke. METHODS: A total of 58 patients with erectile dysfunction after stroke were randomly divided into an observation group (29 cases, 1 case dropped off, 1 case discontinued) and a control group (29 cases, 1 case dropped off). Both groups were given basic treatment, including routine medical treatment, routine acupuncture treatment, rehabilitation training and pelvic floor biofeedback electrical stimulation treatment. The observation group was treated with electroacupuncture at Baliao points, and the control group was treated with shallow acupuncture combined with electroacupuncture at the control points (8 points at 20 mm horizontally beside Baliao points), continuous wave, frequency in 50 Hz, current intensity in 1-5 mA, 5 times a week for 4 weeks. The 5-item version of the international index of erectile function (IIEF-5) score, erectile dysfunction effect on quality of life (ED-EQoL) score and pelvic floor muscle contraction amplitude were compared between the two groups before and after treatment. RESULTS: After treatment, the IIEF-5 scores and the contraction amplitude of fast muscle fiber, comprehensive muscle fiber and slow muscle fiber in the two groups were higher than those before treatment (P<0.05), the ED-EQoL scores were lower than those before treatment (P<0.05), and the changes of above indexes in the observation group were larger than the control group (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Electroacupuncture at Baliao points can improve the erectile function of patients with erectile dysfunction after stroke, increase the contraction amplitude of pelvic floor muscles, and promote the quality of life of patients.

This study aimed to explore nitrogen fertilizer management measures to synergistically improve wheat yields and water and nitrogen use efficiency under supplemental irrigation based on soil moisture in the Huang Huai winter wheat area. Wheat variety "Yannong 1212" was used as the test material. There were three nitrogen application levels, 150 kg·hm-2 (N1), 210 kg·hm-2 (N2), and 270 kg·hm-2 (the conventional nitrogen application rate in the Huang Huai winter wheat area, N3), with the relative soil water content of 0-40 cm of each treatment was supplemented to 70% at the jointing and flowering stages. We investigated the effects of nitrogen rates on photosynthetic characteristics of flag leaves after flowering, 13C assimilate accumulation and transport, and water and nitrogen use efficiency after flowering of wheat. The results showed that photosynthetic capacity of flag leaves in the N2 and N3 was significantly higher than that in N1 14-35 days after flowering, and that there was no significant diffe-rence between N2 and N3 treatments. The 13C isotope tracing results showed that the translocation amount of 13C assimilates in vegetative organs in N2 was 12.1% and 7.1% higher than that in N1 and N3, respectively. The distribution amount of 13C assimilates in grains at maturity was 10.1% and 5.3% higher than that of N1 and N3, respectively. The amount of nitrogen fertilizer affected water consumption, water consumption proportion, and total water consumption in different growth stages of wheat. Water consumption during the whole growth period showed no difference between N2 and N3 treatments, but both were significantly higher than that for N1. Water consumption and water consumption proportion of N2 were higher from the jointing to maturity stages, water use efficiency of N2 was 7.5% and 4.8%, and grain yield was 4.7% and 10.9% higher than that of N3 and N1 treatments, respectively. The partial productivity of nitrogen fertilizer was 34.6% higher in the N2 than that of N3. Considering wheat grain yield and water and nitrogen use efficiency, 210 kg·hm-2 nitrogen application was the best rate under water-saving condition of supplementary irrigation after soil moisture measurement in the study area.

Timely flowering is a determinative trait for many economically valuable species in the Dendrobium genus of the Orchidaceae family, some of which are used for ornamental and medicinal purposes. D. nobile, a representative species of nobile-type Dendrobium, normally flowers in spring after exposure to sufficient low temperatures in winter. However, flowering can be stopped or disrupted by the untimely application of high temperatures. Little is known about the regulation and the mechanisms behind this switch. In this study, we report two isoforms from the KFK09_017173 locus of the D. nobile genome, named DnFCAγ and DnFCAß, respectively, that cooperatively regulate flowering in D. nobile. These two isoforms are generated by alternative 3' polyadenylation of DnFCA (FLOWERING CONTROL LOCUS C in D. nobile) pre-mRNA and contain a distinct 3'-terminus. Both can partially rescue late flowering in the Arabidopsis fca-1 mutant, while in wild-type Arabidopsis, they tend to delay the flowering time. When introduced into the detached axillary buds or young seedlings of D. nobile, both were able to induce the transcription of DnAGL19 (AGAMOUS LIKE 19 in D. nobile) in seedlings, whereas only DnFCAγ was able to suppress the transcription of DnAPL1 (AP1-LIKE 1 in D. nobile) in axillary buds. Furthermore, the time-course change of DnFCAγ accumulation was opposite to that of DnAPL1 in axillary buds, which was remarkable under low temperatures and within a short time after the application of high temperatures, supporting the suggestion that the expression of DnAPL1 can be inhibited by a high accumulation of DnFCAγ in floral buds. In leaves, the accumulation of DnFCAß was in accordance with that of DnAGL19 and DnFT (FLOWERING LOCUS T in D. nobile) to a large extent, suggesting the activation of the DnAGL19-DnFT pathway by DnFCAß. Taken together, these results suggest that the DnFCAγ-DnAPL1 pathway in axillary buds and the DnFCAß-DnAGL19 pathway in the leaves cooperatively promote flowering under low temperatures. The long-term and constant, or untimely, application of high temperatures leads to the constitutive suppression of DnAPL1 by a high level of DnFCAγ in axillary buds, which consequently delays floral development.

OBJECTIVE@#To investigate the clinicopathological characteristics of anorectal mucosal melanoma (ARMM), and to evaluate the prognostic factors.@*METHODS@#A total of 68 primary ARMM surgical specimens from 2010 to 2018 were retrospectively studied. Slides were reviewed to evaluate pathological features. Slingluff staging method was used for staging.@*RESULTS@#(1) Clinical features: The median age at diagnosis in this group was 61.5 years, with a male-to-female ratio 1 ∶1.62. The most common complaint was blooding (49 cases). For anatomic site, anorectum was the prevalent (66.2%), followed by rectum (20.6%). At the time of diagnosis, 28 cases were stage Ⅰ (localized stage, 41.2%), 25 cases were stage Ⅱ (regional lymph node metastasis, 36.8%), and 15 cases were stage Ⅲ (distant metastasis, 22.1%). Five patients underwent wide local excision, the rest abdominoperineal resection, and 48 patients received adjuvant therapy after surgery. (2) Pathological features: Grossly 88.2% of the tumors were exophytic polypoid masses, with the median tumor size 3.5 cm and the median tumor thickness 1.25 cm. Depth of invasion below lamina muscularis mucosae ranged from 0-5.00 cm (median 1.00 cm). The deepest site of tumor invasion reached muscular layer in 27 cases, and perirectal tissue in 16 cases. Melanin pigmentation was absent or not obvious in 67.6% of the cases. The predominant cytology was epithelioid (45 cases, 66.2%). The rate for ulceration, necrosis, lymphovascular invasion, and perineural invasion was 89.7%, 35.3%, 55.9%, and 30.9%, respectively. The median mitotic count was 18/mm2. The positive rate of S100, HMB-45 and Melan-A were 92.0%, 92.6% and 98.0%, respectively. The median of Ki-67 was 50%. The incidences of mutations within CKIT, BRAF and NRAS genes were 17.0% (9 cases), 3.8% (2 cases) and 9.4% (5 cases), respectively. (3) Prognosis: Survival data were available in 66 patients, with a median follow-up of 17 months and a median survival time of 17.4 months. The 1-year, 2-year and 5-year overall survival rate was 76.8%, 36.8% and 17.2%, respectively. The rate of lymphatic metastasis at diagnosis was 56.3%. Forty-nine patients (84.5%) suffered from distant metastasis, and the most frequent metastatic site was liver. Univariate analysis revealed that tumor size (>3.5 cm), depth of invasion below lamina muscularis mucosae (>1.0 cm), necrosis, lymphovascular invasion, BRAF gene mutation, lack of adjuvant therapy after surgery, deep site of tumor invasion, and high stage at diagnosis were all poor prognostic factors for overall survival. Multivariate model showed that lymphovascular invasion and BRAF gene mutation were independent risk factors for lower overall survival, and high stage at diagnosis showed borderline negative correlation with overall survival.@*CONCLUSION@#The overall prognosis of ARMM is poor, and lymphovascular invasion and BRAF gene mutation are independent factors of poor prognosis. Slingluff staging suggests prognosis effectively, and detailed assessment of pathological features, clear staging and genetic testing should be carried out when possible. Depth of invasion below lamina muscularis mucosae of the tumor might be a better prognostic indicator than tumor thickness.

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infects about 50% of the world population and is the major cause of chronic gastritis, peptic ulcers, and gastric cancer. Chronic H. pylori infection induces gastric mucosal precancerous lesions mostly in adulthood, and it is debatable whether these pathological conditions can occur in childhood and adolescents as well. Since this is a critical issue to determine if intervention should be offered for this population group, we investigated the gastric mucosal precancerous lesions in pediatric patients in an area in central China with a high prevalence of H. pylori and gastric cancer. AIM: To investigate the relationship of H. pylori infection and gastric mucosal precancerous lesions in children and adolescents in central China. METHODS: We screened 4258 ward-admitted children and adolescent patients with upper gastrointestinal symptoms, and finally enrolled 1015 pediatric patients with H. pylori infection and endoscopic and histological data. H. pylori infection status was determined by rapid urease test and histopathological examination. Both clinical and pathological data were collected and analyzed retrospectively. Occurrence of gastric mucosal precancerous lesions, inflammatory activity and degree of inflammatory cell infiltration between H. pylori-positive and -negative groups were compared. RESULTS: Among the 1015 eligible children and adolescents, the overall H. pylori infection rate was 84.14% (854/1015). The infection rate increased with age. The incidence of gastric mucosal precancerous lesions in H. pylori-infected children was 4.33% (37/854), which included atrophic gastritis (17 cases), intestinal metaplasia (11 cases) and dysplasia (9 cases). In H. pylori-negative patients, only 1 atrophic gastritis case [0.62%, (1/161)] was found (P < 0.05). Active inflammation in H. pylori-infected patients was significantly higher than that in non-infected patients, and the H. pylori-infected group showed more severe lymphocyte and neutrophil granulocyte infiltration (P < 0.001). In addition, endoscopy revealed that the most common findings in H. pylori-positive patients were antral nodularity, but in H. pylori-negative patients only superficial gastritis was observed. CONCLUSION: In children and adolescents, gastric mucosal precancerous lesions occurred in 4.33% of H. pylori-infected patients in central China. These cases included atrophic gastritis, intestinal metaplasia, and dysplasia. The data revealed an obvious critical issue requiring future investigation and intervention for this population group.

Long terminal repeat (LTR)-retrotransposons (LTR-RTs) comprise a major portion of many plant genomes and may exert a profound impact on genome structure, function, and evolution. Although many studies have focused on these elements in an individual species, their dynamics on a family level remains elusive. Here, we investigated the abundance, evolutionary dynamics, and impact on associated genes of LTR-RTs in 16 species in an economically important plant family, Cucurbitaceae. Results showed that full-length LTR-RT numbers and LTR-RT content varied greatly among different species, and they were highly correlated with genome size. Most of the full-length LTR-RTs were amplified after the speciation event, reflecting the ongoing rapid evolution of these genomes. LTR-RTs highly contributed to genome size variation via species-specific distinct proliferations. The Angela and Tekay lineages with a greater evolutionary age were amplified in Trichosanthes anguina, whereas a recent activity burst of Reina and another ancient round of Tekay activity burst were examined in Sechium edule. In addition, Tekay and Retand lineages belonging to the Gypsy superfamily underwent a recent burst in Gynostemma pentaphyllum. Detailed investigation of genes with intronic and promoter LTR-RT insertion showed diverse functions, but the term of metabolism was enriched in most species. Further gene expression analysis in G.pentaphyllum revealed that the LTR-RTs within introns suppress the corresponding gene expression, whereas the LTR-RTs within promoters exert a complex influence on the downstream gene expression, with the main function of promoting gene expression. This study provides novel insights into the organization, evolution, and function of LTR-RTs in Cucurbitaceae genomes.

BACKGROUND: Chronic inflammatory disorders in atrial fibrillation (AF) contribute to the onset of ischemic stroke. Systemic immune inflammation index (SIII) and system inflammation response index (SIRI) are the two novel and convenient measurements that are positively associated with body inflammation. However, little is known regarding the association between SIII/SIRI with the presence of AF among the patients with ischemic stroke. METHODS: A total of 526 ischemic stroke patients (173 with AF and 353 without AF) were consecutively enrolled in our study from January 2017 to June 2019. SIII and SIRI were measured in both groups. Logistic regression analysis was used to analyse the potential association between SIII/SIRI and the presence of AF. Finally, the correlation between hospitalization expenses, changes in the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) scores and SIII/SIRI values were measured. RESULTS: In patients with ischemic stroke, SIII and SIRI values were significantly higher in AF patients than in non-AF patients (all p < 0.001). Moreover, with increasing quartiles of SIII and SIRI in all patients, the proportion of patients with AF was higher than that of non-AF patients gradually. Logistic regression analyses demonstrated that log-transformed SIII and log-transformed SIRI were independently associated with the presence of AF in patients with ischemic stroke (log-transformed SIII: odds ratio [OR]: 1.047, 95% confidence interval CI = 0.322-1.105, p = 0.047; log-transformed SIRI: OR: 6.197, 95% CI = 2.196-17.484, p = 0.001). Finally, a positive correlation between hospitalization expenses, changes in the NIHSS scores and SIII/SIRI were found, which were more significant in patients with AF (all p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggests SIII and SIRI are convenient and effective measurements for predicting the presence of AF in patients with ischemic stroke. Moreover, they were correlated with increased financial burden and poor short-term prognosis in AF patients presenting with ischemic stroke.

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection and its related diseases are substantial public health burden for highly infected areas. Recently, a novel family-based H. pylori infection control and management (FBCM) strategy is introduced for H. pylori infection prevention and control. However, its cost-effectiveness has not been evaluated. We conducted this health economic evaluation to investigate the cost-effectiveness of FBCM, screen-and-treat, and no-screen strategies in Chinese population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cost-effectiveness analysis was performed using decision tree and Markov model. Parameters required for the model were from published literatures and public databases, including health state utility, screening characteristics, treatment effectiveness, and medical costs for the three strategies. Outcomes were cost, quality-adjusted life year (QALY), incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER). Uncertainty analysis was performed to verify the robustness of this model. RESULTS: To prevent gastric cancer in a cohort of 1 million asymptomatic Chinese families, FBCM and screen-and-treat strategies prevented 1010 and 1201 new gastric cancer cases, reduced 2809 and 3339 gastric cancer-related death, and saved 956,971 and 1,137,549 QALYs, respectively, when compared with no-screen strategy. Cost-effectiveness analysis showed that FBCM strategy cost $9.18/QALY, and screen-and-treat strategy cost $12.08/QALY for gastric cancer prevention when compared with no-screen strategy. One-way sensitivity analysis revealed that screening from younger age by both strategies are more cost-effective. When compared with FBCM strategy, screen-and-treat strategy saved 5.98% gastric cancer cases and 5.78% of gastric cancer deaths, but costed $9348 to reduce a gastric cancer case. Results are not sensitive to any variables, and probabilistic sensitivity analysis confirmed robustness of the results. CONCLUSIONS: Both FBCM and screen-and-treat strategies are cost-effective for gastric cancer prevention compared with no-screen strategy. Since FBCM is more practical and convenient, it may be an efficient and excellent cost-effective strategy for gastric cancer prevention in H. pylori and gastric cancer prevalent areas.

Chiral stereochemistry is a unique and fundamental strategy that determines the interaction of bacteria cells with chiral biomolecules and stereochemical surfaces. The interaction between bacteria and material surface (molecular chirality or supramolecular chirality) plays a significant role in modulating antibacterial performance. Herein, we developed inherent chiral antibacterial hydrogels by modifying the carboxyl groups of our previously reported supramolecular gelator (LPF-left handed phenylalanine gelator and DPF- right handed phenylalanine gelator) with 2-amino-5-methylthiazole (MTZ) and 5-amino-1,3,4-thiadiazole-2- thiol (TDZ). The new L/D-gelator molecules initiate self-assembly to form hydrogels through non-covalent interactions (Hydrogen bonding and π-π interactions) verified by FTIR and CD spectroscopy. Morphological studies of the xerogels revealed left and right-handed chiral nanofibers for the gelators' L-form and D-form, respectively. The resulting hydrogels exhibited inherent antibacterial activity against Gram-positive (Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram-negative (Pseudomonas aeruginosa) bacteria, with TDZ hydrogels showing more significant antibacterial activity than MTZ hydrogels. Interestingly, the D-form (having right-handed nanofibers) of both hydrogels (MTZ and TDZ) exhibited higher antibacterial activities compared with the left-handed nanofibrous hydrogels (L-form) attributed to the stereoselective interaction of the chiral helical nanofiber. Moreover, the amplification of chirality moving from a molecular to a supramolecular level essentially improved the antibacterial action. Our results provide deep insight into the development of unique supramolecular chiral antimicrobial agents and hint at the potentiality of right-handed nanofibers (D-form) having enhanced antibacterial activity. Additionally, this study also explored the amplification of chirality moving from a molecular to a supramolecular level essentially improved the antibacterial action.

Cyclodextrin can form host-guest inclusion complexes with a variety of organic pollutants and has unique advantages in removing complex dye molecules from water. In this study, a porous cyclodextrin polymer (P-CDP) was prepared using a rigid crosslinking agent, and the structure of the P-CDP was characterized by FT-IR, XPS, SEM, BET, and other technologies. The P-CDP was studied using isothermal adsorption and kinetic adsorption experiments. The inclusion adsorption performance and host-guest effect of the P-CDP for dye molecules in water were studied using competitive experiments. The characterization results showed that the P-CDP had strong thermal stability. It had a microporous structure with a specific surface area of 108.745 m2·g-1. The Langmuir model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model had a higher fitting degree for the adsorption process. The results of the competition experiments showed that the electrostatic effect was stronger than the host-guest effect in the adsorption process. Pollutants whose molecular configurations were highly matched with the cyclodextrin cavity could form inclusion complexes with high molecular stability. Contaminants with strong hydrophobicity were more likely to be encapsulated in the cyclodextrin cavity. After the P-CDP adsorbed the dyes, the removal efficiency after the fifth cycle of elution and regeneration remained above 80%. This study showed that P-CDP has potential application value in the treatment of dye wastewater.

We present a benchmark comparison of several deep learning models including Convolutional Neural Networks, Recurrent Neural Network and Bi-directional Long Short Term Memory, assessed based on various word embedding approaches, including the Bi-directional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) and its variants, FastText and Word2Vec. Data augmentation was administered using the Easy Data Augmentation approach resulting in two datasets (original versus augmented). All the models were assessed in two setups, namely 5-class versus 3-class (i.e., compressed version). Findings show the best prediction models were Neural Network-based using Word2Vec, with CNN-RNN-Bi-LSTM producing the highest accuracy (96%) and F-score (91.1%). Individually, RNN was the best model with an accuracy of 87.5% and F-score of 83.5%, while RoBERTa had the best F-score of 73.1%. The study shows that deep learning is better for analyzing the sentiments within the text compared to supervised machine learning and provides a direction for future work and research.

INTRODUCTION: Prostate biopsy (PB) is a typical daily practice method for the diagnosis of prostate cancer (PCa). This study aimed to compare the PCa detection rates and peri- and postoperative complications of PB among 3 residents and a consultant. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 343 patients who underwent PB between August 2018 and July 2019 were involved in this study. Residents were systematically trained for 2 weeks by a consultant for performing systematic biopsy (SB) and targeted biopsy (TB). And then, 3 residents and the consultant performed PB independently every quarter due to routine rotation in daily practice. The peri- and postoperative data were collected from a prospectively maintained database (www.pc-follow.cn). The primary outcome and secondary outcome were to compare the PCa detection rates and complications between the residents and consultant, respectively. RESULTS: There was no significant difference between the residents and consultant in terms of overall PCa detection rates of SB and TB or further stratified by prostate-specific antigen value and prostate imaging reporting and data system (PI-RADS) scores. We found the consultant had more TB cores (175 cores vs. 86-114 cores, p = 0.043) and shorter procedural time (mean 16 min vs. 19.7-20.1 min, p < 0.001) versus the residents. The complication rate for the consultant was 6.7% and 5%-8.2% for the residents, respectively (p = 0.875). CONCLUSIONS: The residents could get similar PCa detection and complication rates compared with that of the consultant after a 2-week training. However, the residents still need more cases to shorten the time of the biopsy procedure.
