RESUMO

CONTEXT: This project performed quantum chemical computation, through kinetic and thermodynamic analyses to compare relative reactivity, reaction rate, and equilibrium composition from the possible pathways in connection with stabilizer-nitrodioxide reactions to determine the stability of the materials for practical application. Corresponding achievements have promoted the use of N-methyl-p-nitroaniline (MNA) and dinitrophenyl malonamide series (M3, M4, and M5) stabilizers as high priorities for selection. METHODS: The Gaussian 09 program (G09) (Frisch et al 2009) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations with the B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) function were performed to obtain related geometric and thermodynamic energy data for the molecular systems in this study. The synchronous transit-guided quasi-Newton method (STQN) (Peng and Schlegel Isr J Chem 33:49, 1993) was applied through the QST3 procedure to identify single imaginary frequency-valued transition-state species. The related reaction rate constant (k) and pre-exponential factor (A) were obtained, based on transition state theory (Su 2008), using Eqs. 11 and 12.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To explore the clinical efficacy of high hip center technique total hip arthroplasty (THA) for Crowe Ⅱand Ⅲ developmental dysplasia of hip (DDH) and severe hip osteoarthritis (HOA). METHODS: From January 2018 to January 2020, 74 patients with Crowe typeⅡand Ⅲ DDH and severe HOA were admitted, and 37 cases of anatomical hip center reconstruction were taken as control group, including 7 males and 30 females, aged from 42 to 65 years old with an average of (58.40±4.98) years old, body mass index (BMI) ranged from 18 to 29 kg·m-2 with an average of (23.02±2.21) kg·m-2. Thirty-seven routine high hip center technical reconstruction were performed as study group, including 5 males and 32 females, aged from 41 to 65 years old with an average of (57.31±5.42) years old, BMI ranged from 18 to 29 kg·m-2 with an average of (23.14±2.07) kg·m-2. The patients presented with hip pain, limited function and range of motion, and gait instability before surgery. All patients underwent THA, the control group underwent intraoperative anatomical hip center reconstruction, and the study group underwent intraoperative high hip joint reconstruction. The perioperative indicators of the two groups were compared. The hip joint function, balance function and gait of the patients were evaluated before surgery, 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months after surgery. The length difference of both lower limbs, horizontal distance of rotation center, vertical distance of rotation center and femoral eccentricity were measured before operation and 1 year after operation. The incidence of complications in the two groups during the operation and postoperative follow-up was counted. RESULTS: The operation time of the study group was shorter than that of the control group, and the intraoperative blood loss was less than that of the control group (P<0.05). After 12-months follow-up, 1 was lost to followvup in study group and 2 were lost to follow-up in control group. The Harris scores and Berg balance scale(BBS), pace, stride frequency and single step length in the study group were higher than those in the control group at 3 months and 6 months after operation (P<0.05);there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups in the indexes 12 months after operation (P>0.05). The vertical distance of the center of rotation of the study group was greater than that of the control group 12 months after operation (P<0.05), and there was no significant difference in the length difference of the lower limbs, the horizontal distance of the center of rotation, and the femoral eccentricity between two groups (P>0.05). There were no complications in either group. CONCLUSION: The long-term effects of THA in patients with DDH and severe HOA were similar between the two central hip reconstruction methods, and the safety was good, and the high hip central reconstruction technique could shorten the operation time and reduce the amount of intraoperative blood loss.At the same time, it has certain advantages in early recovery of hip joint function, balance function and walking function of patients.

RESUMO

Mangroves are transition areas connecting land, freshwater, and the ocean, where a great amount of organic carbon accumulates in the soil, forming a considerable carbon sink. However, the soil might also be a source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This study hypothesized that measuring GHG emissions solely during low tides can represent diurnal GHG emissions in mangroves. Methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions were quantified during tidal cycles using an ultraportable gas analyzer in Kandelia obovata (without pneumatophores) and Avicennia marina (with pneumatophores) mangroves in summer and fall. The results showed that the CH4 fluxes varied greatly during tidal cycles, from -1.25 to 96.24 µmol CH4 m-2 h-1 for K. obovata and from 2.86 to 2662.00 µmol CH4 m-2 h-1 for A. marina. The CO2 fluxes ranged from -4.23 to 20.65 mmol CO2 m-2 h-1 for K. obovata and from 0.09 to 24.69 mmol CO2 m-2 h-1 for A. marina. The diurnal variation in GHG levels in mangroves is predominantly driven by tidal cycles. The peak emissions of CH4 and CO2 were noted at the beginning of the flooding tide, rather than during daytime or nighttime. While the patterns of the CO2 fluxes during tidal cycles were similar between K. obovata and A. marina mangroves, their CH4 flux patterns during the tidal cycles differed. Possibly due to different transport mechanisms, CO2 emissions are primarily influenced by surface soils, whereas CH4 is predominantly emitted from deeper soils, thus being influenced by root structures. To reduce the uncertainty in measuring GHG emissions in mangrove soils during a tidal cycle, it is advisable to increase the number of GHG flux measurements during the period spanning 30 min before and after the beginning of the flooding and ebbing tides.

RESUMO

Ectothermic fish exposure to hypothermal stress requires adjusting their metabolic molecular machinery, which was investigated using Indian medaka (Oryzias dancena; 10 weeks old, 2.5 ± 0.5 cm) cultured in fresh water (FW) and seawater (SW; 35‱) at room temperature (28 ± 1 °C). The fish were fed twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening, and the photoperiod was 12 h:12 h light: dark. In this study, we applied two hypothermal treatments to reveal the mechanisms of energy metabolism via pgc-1α regulation in the gills of Indian medaka; cold-stress (18 °C) and cold-tolerance (extreme cold; 15 °C). The branchial ATP content was significantly higher in the cold-stress group, but not in the cold-tolerance group. In FW- and SW-acclimated medaka, the expression of genes related to mitochondrial energy metabolism, including pgc-1α, prc, Nrf2, tfam, and nd5, was analyzed to illustrate differential responses of mitochondrial energy metabolism to cold-stress and cold-tolerance environments. When exposed to cold-stress, the relative mRNA expression of pgc-1α, prc, and Nrf2 increased from 2 h, whereas that of tfam and nd5 increased significantly from 168 h. When exposed to a cold-tolerant environment, prc was significantly upregulated at 2 h post-cooling in the FW and SW groups, and pgc-1α was significantly upregulated at 2 and 12 h post-cooling in the FW group, while tfam and nd5 were downregulated in both FW and SW fish. Hierarchical clustering revealed gene interactions in the cold-stress group, which promoted diverse mitochondrial energy adaptations, causing an increase in ATP production. However, the cold-tolerant group demonstrated limitations in enhancing ATP levels through mitochondrial regulation via the PGC-1α energy metabolism pathway. These findings suggest that ectothermic fish may develop varying degrees of thermal tolerance over time in response to climate change. This study provides insights into the complex ways in which fish adjust their metabolism when exposed to cold stress, contributing to our knowledge of how they adapt.

RESUMO

In recent years, cases of the improper utilization of steel furnace slag have been widely reported, resulting in a crisis of nowhere for recycled resources such as inorganic slag. The misplacement of resource materials that originally had sustainable-use value not only has a great impact on society and the environment but also greatly reduces industrial competitiveness. To solve the dilemma of steel furnace-slag reuse, it is critical to find solutions to the stabilization of steelmaking slag under the innovative thinking of the circular economy. In addition to enhancing the reuse value of recycled resources, the balance between economic development and environmental impact is also crucial. The high-performance building material could provide a solution based on a high-value market. With the development of society and the increasing requirements for quality of life, the requirements for the soundproof and fireproof performance of lightweight decorative panels common in cities have gradually become popular. Therefore, the high performance of fire retardant and soundproofing could be the main development focus of high-value building materials to ensure circular economic feasibility. This study continues the research results of the application of inorganic re-cycled engineering materials in recent years, and the application of electric-arc furnace (EAF)-reducing slag to the development of base materials for reinforced cement boards, in order to complete the development of high-value panels with fireproof and sound-insulation properties in line with the engineering characteristics of the boards. The research results showed the optimization of the proportions of the cement boards with EAF-reducing slag as a raw material. The proportions of EAF-reducing slag to fly ash at ratios of 70:30 and 60:40 all met the requirements of ISO 5660-1 Class I flame resistance; the sound transmission loss in the overall frequency band can reach more than 30 dB, which is higher by 3-8 dB or more than the same board with similar specifications (such as 12 mm gypsum board) in the present building-materials market The products could be developed into building partitions and ceiling decoration boards with high performance in terms of fire retardant and soundproofing values, and also reduce the use of natural raw materials by more than 35%. The results of this study could meet environmental compatibility targets and contribute towards greener buildings. This model of circular economics would achieve energy reduction, emissions reductions, and be environmentally friendly.

RESUMO

Because of incomplete recycling resource management and technology development, inorganic sludge and slag has been misused in Taiwan. The recycling of inorganic sludge and slag is a pressing crisis. Resource materials with a sustainable use value are misplaced and have a significant impact on society and the environment, which greatly reduces industrial competitiveness. To solve the dilemma of EAF oxidizing slag recycled from the steel-making process, it is important to find solutions to improve the stability of EAF oxidizing slags based on the innovative thinking of the circular economy. We can improve the value of recycling resources and solve the contradiction between economic development and environmental impact. The project team intends to investigate the development and application of reclaiming EAF oxidizing slags blended with fire-retardant materials, which will integrate R&D work from four different aspects. First, a verification mechanism is carried out to establish stainless steel furnace materials. Suppliers must be assisted in conducting quality management for EAF oxidizing slags to ensure the quality of the materials provided. Next, high-value building materials must be developed using slag stabilization technology, and fire-retardant tests must be conducted on the recycled building materials. A comprehensive evaluation and verification of the recycled building materials must be undertaken, and high-value green building materials must be produced with fire-retardant and sound-proofing characteristics. Integration with national standards and regulations can drive the market integration of high-value building materials and the industrial chain. On the other hand, the applicability of existing regulations to facilitate the legal use of EAF oxidizing slags will be explored.

RESUMO

Based on the crop yield data of China and each region from 1981 to 2020 (excluding data from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan), by using the grain-straw ratio method, this study estimated the total amount of crop straw and collectable amount of crops, including corn, rice, wheat, other cereals, cotton, rapeseeds, peanuts, beans, tubers, sesame, fiber crops, sugarcane, and beetroots, and the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of resource density and per capita resources of crop straw were analyzed. This study analyzed the current utilization mode, development, and change of crop straw in China. Finally, we used the life circle assessment (LCA) method to estimate the carbon emission reduction potential of biochar prepared from crop straw. The main findings were:from 1981 to 2020, the temporal distribution trend of theoretical crop straw resources and collectable straw resources in China generally showed a steady growth trend, and the two increased from 3.33×108 t and 3.04×108 t in 1981 to the highest values of 7.70×108 t and 6.63×108 t in 2020, with a net increase of 4.37×108 t and 3.59×108 t, respectively. The net increase in rice, wheat, and corn straw resources was 3.69×108t, accounting for between 77% and 85% of the total crop straw and always occupying the main position of straw resources in China. The proportion of wheat straw in the total amount of straw was maintained at approximately 20%, rice straw resources decreased from 44% to 28.4%, and corn straw increased from 19.9% to 34.2% from 1981 to 2020. In 2020, the total theoretical resources of crop straw in China were 7.72×108 t, and the source structures were:rice 28.4%, wheat 21.45%, corn 31.45%, other cereals 1.4%, beans 3.4%, tubers 0.82%, cotton 2.28%, peanuts 2.97%, rapeseeds 3.4%, sesame 0.12%, fiber crops 0.06%, beetroots 0.67%, and sugarcane 0.84%. As to the spatial distribution of crop straw resources in China in 2020, the locations with straw resources ≥ 60 million tons included Heilongjiang, Henan, and Shandong, of which Henan had as much as 88.56 million tons; those with between 40 million and 60 million tons included Hebei, Inner Mongolia, Jiangsu, and Anhui; those with between 20 million and 40 million tons included Liaoning, Jilin, Jiangxi, Hubei, Hunan, Sichuan, Yunnan, and Xinjiang; and the straw resources in the rest of the region were below 20 million tons. Rice straw was mostly distributed in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River and the Northeast region, of which the amount of Heilongjiang rice straw was the largest, with 31.86 million tons; wheat straw was mainly distributed in North China, with Henan having the most abundant resources (48.04 million tons). Corn straw was mainly distributed in Northeast China and North China, of which Heilongjiang and Inner Mongolia corn straw resources were relatively rich, with 33.18 million tons and 29.90 million tons, respectively. Crop straw resource density and per capita resources were shared in 2020 in China. The average density of crop straw resources in China was 4.61 t·hm-2, and the average densities of crop straw resources in various agricultural areas were 5.39 t·hm-2 in Northeast China, 5.42 t·hm-2 in North China, 4.45 t·hm-2 in the Mengxin Region, 4.44 t·hm-2 in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, 3.92 t·hm-2in Tibet, 3.40 t·hm-2 in the Loess Plateau, 3.08 t·hm-2 in South China, and 2.91 t·hm-2 in Southwest China. The average per capita share of straw resources was 0.55 t. The average values of per capita straw resources in each region were:1.46 t in the Northeast area, 1.20 t in the Mengxin Region, 0.47 t in North China, 0.44 t in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, 0.40 t in the Loess Plateau, 0.37 t in the Southwest area, 0.33 t in the Qinghai-Tibet area, and 0.20 t in the South China area. The utilization of crop straw in China was diversified. Fertilizer and feed were the main utilizations, accounting for 62.1% and 15.4%, respectively. In 2020, collectable crop straw resources for the preparation of biochar totaled 2.04×108 t in China. Renewable energy replaced fossil fuels in the process of preparing biochar, which could reduce CO2e(CO2e:CO2 equivalent) emissions by 1.45×108 t. Biochar could sequester approximately 4.63×108 t of CO2e; biochar application was able to reduce chemical fertilizer application to achieve a CO2 emission reduction of 8.58×105 t; and biochar application could promote crop yield in order to reduce CO2e emissions by approximately 7.77×106 t. The inhibition of N2, respectively. In the process of biochar preparation and application, the total greenhouse gas emission was 3.32×107 t, and the net greenhouse effect emission reduction reached 5.86×108 t, i.e., it could sequester 0.88 t CO2e per ton of raw materials. The net greenhouse gas emission reduction of unused straw was 6.73×107 t in 2020. With the continuous harvest of grain crops in China, the potential of biochar preparation and carbon sequestration will increase yearly. Using crop straw to prepare biochar has great potential and will be one of the most effective ways to achieve carbon emission reduction in agriculture. It is suggested that government departments should pay attention to the preparation of biochar, support the field experiments of biochar application effects after applying soil on policy and funds, and then introduce relevant biochar standards to ensure the scientific application of biochar prepared by crop straw according to local conditions, so as to achieve the dual benefits of carbon emission reduction and soil remediation and yield increase.

RESUMO

A series of compounds featuring a novel bispiro[indanedione-oxindole-cyclopropane] moiety have been synthesized through a squaramide-catalyzed [2+1] cycloaddition reaction. The tandem Michael-alkylation reaction of 2-arylidene-1,3-indanediones with 3-bromooxindoles furnished the cycloadducts in high yields with excellent diastereo- and enantioselectivities. The ammonium ylide in the catalytic process, as a key intermediate, was revealed by the high-resolution mass spectrometry study.

RESUMO

An unprecedented tandem trifluoromethylsilylation/intramolecular SN2 substitution sequence was realized by using bifunctional reagent Me2(CH2Cl)SiCF3, allowing efficient construction of valuable trifluoromethylated oxasilacyclohexanes that are difficult to access by known methods. Initial attempts into developing asymmetric variant reveal that using cinchonine-derived dimeric PTC catalyst could afford chiral oxasilacyclohexanes in up to 92% enantiomeric excess.

RESUMO

The developmental transcriptomes of Sarcomyxa edulis were assessed to explore the molecular mechanisms underlying lignocellulose degradation. Six stages were analyzed, spanning the entire developmental process: growth of mycelium until occupying half the bag (B1), mycelium under low-temperature stimulation after occupying the entire bag (B2), appearance of mycelium in primordia (B3), primordia (B4), mycelium at the harvest stage (B5), and mature fruiting body (B6). Samples from all six developmental stages were used for transcriptome sequencing, with three biological replicates for all experiments. A co-expression network of weighted genes associated with extracellular enzyme physiological traits was constructed using weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA). We obtained 19 gene co-expression modules significantly associated with lignocellulose degradation. In addition, 12 key genes and 8 kinds of TF families involved in lignocellulose degradation pathways were discovered from the four modules that exhibited the highest correlation with the target traits. These results provide new insights that advance our understanding of the molecular genetic mechanisms of lignocellulose degradation in S. edulis to facilitate its utilization by the edible mushroom industry.

RESUMO

Unlike reported pyridine hybrids, 2S (1a) and 2R-alanginenmine A (1b) from Alangium chinense featuring an unprecedented piperidine-bridged polypyridine skeleton represented a pair of alkaloid subtypes with a unique multiple pyridine scaffold. Enlightened by the rare structural characteristics and possible biosynthetic pathway, (±)-alanginenmine A (1) have been achieved in ideal yield by gram-class total synthesis with four steps. In addition, both compounds 1a and 1b exhibited anti-acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and HIV-1 protease activities in the biological activity evaluation. Further, molecular docking was investigated for the mechanism of action between the isolated compounds and HIV-1 protease. The stronger Coulomb interactions and van der Waals interaction, as well as the hydrogen bond interactions of 1a, might be the main cause for its better anti-HIV-1 protease activity than 1b. This work provided a comprehensive research including natural product discovery, bioactivity evaluation, and total synthesis for the new type of leading anti-HIV-1 protease.

RESUMO

The first enantioselective formal (3 + 2) cyclocondensation involving α,ß-unsaturated pyrazoleamides as 3-carbon partners was accomplished in a stepwise fashion. The stepwise esterification/Michael addition sequence is promoted by Zn(OTf)2 and quinine-squaramide derivative, respectively. The protocol enables access to spiro-fused pentacyclic spirooxindoles from coumarin-3-formylpyrazoles and 3-hydroxyoxindoles in good to satisfactory overall yields (up to 91%) with excellent dr (all cases >20:1 dr) and high ee values (up to 99%). Mechanistic investigations contributed to shedding light on the enantioselective event of the process.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the risk factors for refracture of adjacent vertebrae after percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) in super-old patients with osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures(OVCFs). METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on 40 patients(age≥90 years) with OVCFs who underwent PVP between June 2012 and June 2019. There were 7 males and 33 females, age from 90 to 101 years old with an average of (94.6±1.6) years. Patients were divided into two groups according to whether adjacent vertebral refracture occurred after PVP. Among them, 20 patients occurred refracture after PVP (refracture group) and 20 patients did not occur it(control group). The general information, radiological data and pelvic parameters of the two groups were collected. The items included age, gender, body mass index (BMI), fracture site and bone mineral density(BMD) T-value, fracture to operation time, compression degree of injured vertebra, recovery degree of anterior edge of injured vertebra, bone cement injection amount, bone cement leakage, pelvic index(PI), pelvic tilt angle (PT), sacral angle(SS), et al. Factors that may be related to refracture were included in the single-factor study, and multivariate Logistic regression analysis was performed on the risk factors with statistical significance in the single-factor analysis to further clarify the independent risk factors for refracture of adjacent vertebral bodies after PVP. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in age, gender, fracture site, fracture to operation time, compression degree of injured vertebra and recovery degree of anterior edge of injured vertebra between two groups (P>0.05). There were significant differences in BMI, BMD T-value, bone cement injection amount and bone cement leakage rate between two groups(P<0.05). The PI and PT values of the refracture group were higher than those of the control group(P<0.05). There was no significant difference in SS between two groups (P>0.05). Multivariate Logistic regression analysis showed that decreased BMD T-value, bone cement leakage, increased PT and PI values increased the risk of recurrence of adjacent vertebral fractures in OVCFs (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: There are many risk factors for the recurrence of adjacent vertebral fractures in super-old patients with OVCFs. Patients with high PI and PT values may be one of the risk factors.

RESUMO

Sarcomyxa edulis is a widely harvested mushroom of Northeastern Asia. Its development can be divided into six stages: growth of mycelium until occupying half the bag (B1), mycelium under low-temperature stimulation after occupying the entire bag (B2), appearance of mycelium in primordia (B3), primordia (B4), mycelium at the harvest stage (B5), and mature fruiting body (B6). Differentially expressed gene (DEG) analysis and weighted gene coexpression network analysis (WGCNA) are important bioinformatic methods for screening key genes. To explore the growth and development mechanisms of the mushroom S. edulis and clarify its genetic background, DEG and WGCNA analyses were combined to screen key genes at different developmental stages. From A1 to A6, respectively, 459, 97, 885, 169, 277, and 712 key genes were identified. Then the Gene Ontology (GO) terms and KEGG pathways of key genes were analyzed, and GO and KEGG analyses were performed on all genes across different periods using GSEA. In summary, the genes in A1 were mainly involved in amino sugar and nucleotide sugar metabolism, structural molecule activity, and oxidative phosphorylation. At the A2 stage, genes were mainly involved in peptidase activity, peroxidase activity, oxidoreductase activity, antioxidant activity, biosynthesis of secondary metabolites, and glycolysis and gluconeogenesis. A3 genes were involved in gene expression, RNA metabolism, spliceosome, RNA transport, and ribosome biogenesis. A4 genes were mainly involved in the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites, proteasome complex, cellular protein complex assembly, actin filament-based processes, oxidative phosphorylation, and carbon metabolism. The A5 stage genes were involved in the carbohydrate metabolic process, polysaccharide metabolic process, and the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites, leucine, isoleucine, and ABC transporters. Finally, A6 genes were mainly involved in the cell cycle, meiosis of yeast, MAPK signaling pathway, cellular response to DNA damage stimulus, DNA metabolic process, DNA replication, and DNA repair. The combination of multiple analyses provides us with an in-depth understanding of the network that regulates mushroom development.

RESUMO

We report a case of mucormycosis induced by Cunninghamella spp. infection in a ten-year-old girl with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, who developed fever and respiratory symptoms after chemotherapy and was diagnosed with invasive fungal disease. Peripheral blood DNA sequences were analyzed using metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS), and by comparison with the Pathogens Metagenomics Database (PMDB), we identified Cunninghamella spp. with sequence number 514 as the pathogen. The patient was treated with amphotericin B combined with posaconazole and showed a favorable response. We searched Pubmed, Embase, CNKI, and Wanfang database for reports of cases of Cunninghamella spp. infection in children and retrieved 22 reported cases (including 12 males) with a median age of 13.5 (3-18) years. In these 22 cases, hematological malignancy was the most common underlying condition (19/22), and most of patients experienced an acute onset and rapid progression with respiratory symptoms (14/20) and fever (16/20) as the most common symptoms. CT imaging often showed unilateral lesions with varying imaging findings, including pulmonary nodules or masses, infiltrative changes, and pleural effusion. Definite diagnoses were established in 18 of the cases, and 4 had probable diagnoses; the lungs and skin were the most frequent organs compromised by the infection. A definite diagnosis of Cunninghamella spp. infection still relied on histopathological examination and fungal culture, but the molecular techniques including PCR and mNGS had shown potentials in the diagnosis. Almost all the cases received antifungal treatment after diagnosis (21/22), and 13 patients also underwent surgeries. Death occurred in 9 (42%) of the cases at a median of 19 (4-54) days after onset of the signs or symptoms. The patients receiving antifungal therapy combined with surgery had a high survival rate (9/13, 69%) than those with antifungal therapy alone (3/8, 37%). Invasive fungal disease is a common complication in immunoco-mpromised patients, but Cunninghamella spp. infection is rare and has a high mortality rate. In cases highly suspected of this disease, active diagnosis and early treatment are critical to improve the survival outcomes of the patients.

RESUMO

Since the discovery of carbocations in 1901, the past 120 years have witnessed many marvelous advances in the chemistry of carbocations. The state-of-the-art research in this field is to overcome the intrinsic instability and high reactivity of the prochiral carbocationic intermediates to develop catalytic asymmetric reactions. Such transformations enable the facile synthesis of structurally diverse value-added products from readily available starting materials such as alkenes, alcohols, and carbonyl derivatives, and enjoy high and even perfect atom-economy in most cases. Notably, such allows catalytic stereoconvergent synthesis from racemic substrates and can realize regioselectivity in olefin functionalization reactions complementary to radical processes. With the rapid developments in modern asymmetric organocatalysis, a variety of highly enantioselective protocols evolving prochiral carbocationic intermediates have been achieved by employing three strategies, namely chiral ion-pairing, chiral nucleophile, or chiral carbenium ion strategy. This feature article aims to summarize the exciting advances in this emerging area and briefly showcase the possible mechanisms. The advantages and limitations of each strategy are presented as well as their synthetic applications in the synthesis of natural products or bioactive compounds.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord injury (SCI) causes a primary injury at the lesion site and triggers a secondary injury and prolonged inflammation. There has been no definitive treatment till now. Promoting angiogenesis is one of the most important strategies for functional recovery after SCI. The omentum, abundant in blood and lymph vessels, possesses the potent ability of tissue regeneration. METHODS: The present work examines the efficacy of autologous omentum, either as a flap (with vascular connection intact) or graft (severed vascular connection), on spinal nerve regeneration. After contusive SCI in rats, a thin sheath of omentum was grafted to the injured spinal cord. RESULTS: Omental graft improved behavior scores significantly from the 3rd to 6th week after injury (6th week, 5.5 ± 0.5 vs. 8.6 ± 1.3, p < 0.05). Furthermore, the reduction in cavity and the preservation of class III ß-tubulin-positive nerve fibers in the injury area was noted. Next, the free omental flap was transposed to a completely transected SCI in rats through a pre-implanted tunnel. The flap remained vascularized and survived well several weeks after the operation. At 16 weeks post-treatment, SCI rats with omentum flap treatment displayed the preservation of significantly more nerve fibers (p < 0.05) and a reduced injured cavity, though locomotor scores were similar. CONCLUSIONS: Taken together, the findings of this study indicate that treatment with an omental graft or transposition of an omental flap on an injured spinal cord has a positive effect on nerve protection and tissue preservation in SCI rats. The current data highlight the importance of omentum in clinical applications.
