RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Drug-involved individuals who contact treatment services in Taiwan are mostly driven by criminal justice systems either as an alternative or adjunct to criminal sanctions for a drug offence. With a focus on justice-involved young female drug users, the present study examines the extent to which socioeconomic and motherhood characteristics are associated with receiving deferred prosecution, a scheme diverting drug offenders to community-based addiction treatment. METHODS: We identified a cohort of 5869 women under the age of 30 arrested for using Schedule II drugs (primarily amphetamine-like stimulants) from the 2011-2017 National Police Criminal Records in Taiwan. Information concerning socioeconomic characteristics, pregnancy and live birth history, and deferred prosecution was obtained through linkage with the 2006-2019 National Health Insurance, birth registration, and deferred prosecution datasets. Multinomial logistic regression was used to evaluate the association with stratification by recidivism status. RESULTS: Within six months of arrest, 21% of first-time offenders (n = 2645) received deferred prosecution and 23% received correction-based rehabilitation; the corresponding estimates for recidivists (n = 3224) were 6% and 15%, respectively. Among first-time offenders, low/unstable income was associated with lower odds of deferred prosecution (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 0.71; 95% CI: 0.58, 0.88). For recidivists, those with low/unstable income (aOR = 1.58) or unemployment (aOR = 1.58) had higher odds of correction-based rehabilitation; being pregnant at arrest was linked with reduced odds of deferred prosecution (aOR = 0.31, 95% CI: 0.13, 0.71) and correction-based rehabilitation (aOR = 0.50, 95% CI: 0.32, 0.77). CONCLUSIONS: For the young women arrested for drug offences, disadvantaged socioeconomic conditions were generally unfavored by the diversion to treatment in the community. Childbearing upon arrest may lower not only the odds of receiving medical treatment but also correctional intervention. The criminal prosecution policy and process should be informed by female drug offenders' need for treatment and recovery.

RESUMO

We present a deep learning (DL) network-based approach for detecting and semantically segmenting two specific types of tuberculosis (TB) lesions in chest X-ray (CXR) images. In the proposed method, we use a basic U-Net model and its enhanced versions to detect, classify, and segment TB lesions in CXR images. The model architectures used in this study are U-Net, Attention U-Net, U-Net++, Attention U-Net++, and pyramid spatial pooling (PSP) Attention U-Net++, which are optimized and compared based on the test results of each model to find the best parameters. Finally, we use four ensemble approaches which combine the top five models to further improve lesion classification and segmentation results. In the training stage, we use data augmentation and preprocessing methods to increase the number and strength of lesion features in CXR images, respectively. Our dataset consists of 110 training, 14 validation, and 98 test images. The experimental results show that the proposed ensemble model achieves a maximum mean intersection-over-union (MIoU) of 0.70, a mean precision rate of 0.88, a mean recall rate of 0.75, a mean F1-score of 0.81, and an accuracy of 1.0, which are all better than those of only using a single-network model. The proposed method can be used by clinicians as a diagnostic tool assisting in the examination of TB lesions in CXR images.

RESUMO

The interaction between microplastics (MPs) and cadmium (Cd) poses a threat to agricultural soil environments, and their effects on plant growth and rhizosphere microbial community functions are not yet clear. In this study, energy sorghum was used as a test plant to investigate the effects of two types of MPs, polystyrene (PS) and polyethylene (PE), at different particle sizes (13 µm, 550 µm) and concentrations (0.1%, 1% w/w), and Cd, as well as their interactions, on the growth of sorghum in a soil-cultivation pot experiment. The results showed that the combined effects of MP and Cd pollution on the dry weight and Cd accumulation rate in sorghum varied depending on the type, concentration, and particle size of the MPs, with an overall trend of increasing stress from combined pollution with increasing Cd content and accumulation. High-throughput sequencing analysis revealed that combined MP and Cd pollution increased bacterial diversity, and the most significant increase was observed in the abundance-based coverage estimator (ACE), Shannon, and Sobs indices in the 13 µm 1% PS+Cd treatment group. Metagenomic analysis based on the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) metabolic pathways revealed that 19 groups of metabolic pathways, including microbial metabolism and methane metabolism, differed significantly under combined MP and Cd pollution. Hierarchical clustering results indicated that Cd treatment and combined MP and Cd treatment affected the abundances of sorghum rhizosphere soil nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) cycling genes and that the type of MP present was an important factor affecting N and P cycling genes. The results of this study provide a basis for exploring the toxic effects of combined MP and Cd pollution and for conducting soil environmental risk assessments.

RESUMO

Composite pollution by microplastics and heavy metals poses a potential threat to the soilplant system and has received increasing attention. Plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) have good application potential for the remediation of combined microplastic and heavy metal pollution, but few related studies exist. The present study employed a pot experiment to investigate the effects of inoculation with the PGPB Bacillus sp. SL-413 and Enterobacter sp. VY-1 on sorghum growth and Cd accumulation under conditions of combined cadmium (Cd) and polyethylene (PE) pollution. Cd+PE composite contamination led to a significant reduction in sorghum length and biomass due to increased toxicity. Inoculation with Bacillus sp. SL-413 and Enterobacter sp. VY-1 alleviated the stress caused by Cd+PE complex pollution, and the dry weight of sorghum increased by 25.7% to 46.1% aboveground and by 12.3% to 45.3% belowground. Bacillus sp. SL-413 and Enterobacter sp. VY-1 inoculation increased the Cd content and accumulation in sorghum and improved the phytoremediation efficiency of Cd. The inoculation treatment effectively alleviated the nutrient stress caused by the reduction in soil mineral nutrients due to Cd+PE composite pollution. The composition of the soil bacterial communities was also affected by the Cd, Cd+PE and bacterial inoculation treatments, which affected the diversity of the soil bacterial communities. Network analyses indicated that bacterial inoculation regulated the interaction of rhizospheric microorganisms and increased the stability of soil bacterial communities. The Mantel test showed that the changes in the soil bacterial community and function due to inoculation with Bacillus sp. SL-413 and Enterobacter sp. VY-1 were important factors influencing sorghum growth and Cd remediation efficiency. The results of this study will provide new evidence for the research on joint plantmicrobe remediation of heavy metal and microplastic composite pollution.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The SARS-CoV-2 virus has been a global public health threat since December 2019. This study aims to investigate the neurological characteristics and risk factors of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Taiwanese children, using data from a collaborative registry. METHODS: A retrospective, cross-sectional, multi-center study was done using an online network of pediatric neurological COVID-19 cohort collaborative registry. RESULTS: A total of 11160 COVID-19-associated emergency department (ED) visits and 1079 hospitalizations were analyzed. Seizures were the most common specific neurological symptom, while encephalitis and acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) was the most prevalent severe involvement. In ED patients with neurological manifestations, severe neurological diagnosis was associated with visual hallucination, seizure with/without fever, behavior change, decreased GCS, myoclonic jerk, decreased activity/fatigue, and lethargy. In hospitalized patients with neurological manifestations, severe neurological diagnosis was associated with behavior change, visual hallucination, decreased GCS, seizure with/without fever, myoclonic jerk, fatigue, and hypoglycemia at admission. Encephalitis/ADEM was the only risk factor for poor neurological outcomes at discharge in hospitalized patients. CONCLUSIONS: Neurological complications are common in pediatric COVID-19. Visual hallucination, seizure, behavior change, myoclonic jerk, decreased GCS, and hypoglycemia at admission are the most important warning signs of severe neurological involvement such as encephalitis/ADEM.

RESUMO

AIMS: Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT-2is) have been demonstrated to be associated with cancer cell mechanisms. However, whether they increase the risk of cancer remains unclear. Thus, this study aimed to determine the association between SGLT-2i use and the incidence of cancer in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) in Taiwan. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective cohort study was based on the Taiwan National Health Insurance database. The study population comprised patients with DM, and those who first used SGLT-2is during 2016-2018 were assigned to the study group. Greedy propensity score matching was performed to select patients who first used dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitors (DPP-4is), and these patients were assigned to the control group. A Cox proportional hazards model was used to estimate the adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for cancer risk in the study and control groups; this model was adjusted for demographic characteristics, DM severity, comorbidities and concomitant medication use. RESULTS: After controlling for relevant variables, the SGLT-2i cohort (aHR = 0.90, 95% CI = 0.87-0.93) had a significantly lower risk of developing cancer than the DPP-4i cohort, particularly when the SGLT-2i was dapagliflozin (aHR = 0.91, 95% CI = 0.87-0.95) or empagliflozin (aHR = 0.90, 95% CI = 0.86-0.94). Regarding cancer type, the SGLT-2i cohort's risk of cancer was significantly lower than that of the DPP-4i cohort for leukaemia, oesophageal, colorectal, liver, pancreatic, lung, skin and bladder cancer. CONCLUSIONS: SGLT-2i use was associated with a significantly lower risk of cancer than DPP-4i use.

RESUMO

The relationship between social support and mortality, especially cardio-cerebrovascular mortality, still has some limitations in the assessment of social support, sample selection bias, and short follow-up time. We used the data from 2005 to 2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey to examine this relationship. The study analyzed a total of 6776 participants, divided into Group 1, Group 2, and Group 3 according to the social support score (0-1; 2-3; 4-5). Multivariable adjusted COX regression analyses of our study showed that Group 3 and Group 2 had a reduced risk of all-cause and cardio-cerebrovascular mortality (Group 3 vs 1, HR: 0.55, P < 0.001; HR: 0.4, P < 0.001; Group 2 vs 1, HR: 0.77, P = 0.017; HR: 0.58, P = 0.014) compared with Group 1. The same results were observed after excluding those who died in a relatively short time. Additionally, having more close friends, being married or living as married, and enough attending religious services were significantly related to a lower risk of mortality after adjustment. In brief, adequate social support is beneficial in reducing the risk of all-cause mortality and cardio-cerebrovascular mortality in middle-aged and older adults, especially in terms of attending religious services frequency, the number of close friends, and marital status.

RESUMO

The genomic evolution of Polyopisthocotylea remains poorly understood in comparison to the remaining three classes of Neodermata: Monopisthocotylea, Cestoda, and Trematoda. Moreover, the evolutionary sequence of major events in the phylogeny of Neodermata remains unresolved. Herein we sequenced the mitogenome and transcriptome of the polyopisthocotylean Diplorchis sp., and conducted comparative evolutionary analyses using nuclear (nDNA) and mitochondrial (mtDNA) genomic datasets of Neodermata. We found strong mitonuclear discordance in the phylogeny of Neodermata. Polyopisthocotylea exhibited striking mitonuclear discordance in relative evolutionary rates: the fastest-evolving mtDNA in Neodermata and a comparatively slowly-evolving nDNA genome. This was largely attributable to its very long stem branch in mtDNA topologies, not exhibited by the nDNA data. We found indications that the fast evolution of mitochondrial genomes of Polyopisthocotylea may be driven both by relaxed purifying selection pressures and elevated levels of directional selection. We identified mitochondria-associated genes encoded in the nuclear genome: they exhibited unique evolutionary rates, but not correlated with the evolutionary rate of mtDNA, and there is no evidence for compensatory evolution (they evolved slower than the rest of the genome). Finally, there appears to exist an exceptionally large (≈6.3 kb) nuclear mitochondrial DNA segment (numt) in the nuclear genome of newly sequenced Diplorchis sp. A 3'-end segment of the 16S rRNA gene encoded by the numt was expressed, suggesting that this gene acquired novel, regulatory functions after the transposition to the nuclear genome. In conclusion, Polyopisthocotylea appears to be the lineage with the fastest-evolving mtDNA sequences among all of Bilateria, but most of the substitutions were accumulated deep in the evolutionary history of this lineage. As the nuclear genome does not exhibit a similar pattern, the circumstances underpinning this evolutionary phenomenon remain a mystery.

RESUMO

Previous work has shown that dietary treatments affect woody breast (WB) incidence differently, which indicates that gut conditions such as gut barrier function, inflammation, and oxidative stress are likely related to WB. In this study, dietary supplementation with antibiotics (bacitracin) or probiotics (Bacillus subtilis) was investigated for their effects on the expression of transcripts related to gut barrier function, inflammation, and oxidative stress in the mucus lining of the jejunum from broilers with or without WB. A split-plot experimental design was used in this study. The dietary treatments served as the main plot factor and the breast muscle condition was the subplot factor. On d 41, jejunum mucus was collected from 1 bird from each of 3 replicate pens in each 3 dietary treatment groups that exhibited WB and an additional bird that contained a normal breast (3 biological replicates/treatment/phenotype; 3 × 3 × 2, total N = 18). Total RNA was extracted using a commercial RNA extraction kit. The expression levels of CLDN1, MUC6, TLR2A, TLR2B, TLR4, IFN-γ, IL-1ß, IL-8L1, IL-10, NOS2, and SOD were determined using 2-step RT-qPCR analysis. The gene expression difference in ΔCt values was determined after normalizing with the chicken 18S rRNA gene. When the significant differences occurred between treatments, the relative fold change was calculated using the ΔΔCt method and the significance level was calculated. The PROC GLM procedure of SAS 9.4 was used, and the level of significance was set at P ≤ 0.05. There were no significant interactive effects between diet and the breast muscle condition on the expression of any of the genes tested. However, birds with WB exhibited higher MUC6 (P < 0.0001) gene expression levels than birds with normal breast muscles. In addition, the expression of SOD decreased in birds that were fed the antibiotic diet when compared to birds that were fed the probiotic diet (P = 0.014). In conclusion, WB identified in broilers tested in the current study is attributed to increased expression of mucin, indicating a correlation between WB incidence and gel-forming mucin secretion and pathogen signaling.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The incidence of gastric cancer remains high, and it is the sixth most common cancer and the fourth leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide. Oral contrast-enhanced ultrasonography is a simple, non-invasive, and painless method for the diagnosis of gastric tumors. AIM: To explore the diagnostic value of oral contrast-enhanced ultrasonography for the detection of gastric tumors. METHODS: The screening results based on oral contrast-enhanced ultrasonography and electronic gastroscopy were compared with those of the postoperative pathological examination. RESULTS: Among 42 patients with gastric tumors enrolled in the study, the diagnostic accordance rate was 95.2% for oral contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (n = 40) and 90.5% for electronic gastroscopy (n = 38) compared with postoperative pathological examination. The Kappa value of consistency test with pathological findings was 0.812 for oral contrast-enhanced ultrasonography and 0.718 for electronic gastroscopy, and there was no significant difference between them (P = 0.397). For the TNM staging of gastric tumors, the accuracy rate of oral contrast-enhanced ultrasonography was 81.9% for the overall T staging and 50%, 77.8%, 100%, and 100% for T1, T2, T3, and T4 staging, respectively. The sensitivity and specificity were both 100% for stages T3 and T4. The diagnostic accuracy rate of oral contrast-enhanced ultrasonography was 93.8%, 80%, 100%, and 100% for stages N0, N1-N3, M0, and M1, respectively. CONCLUSION: The accordance rate of qualitative diagnosis by oral contrast-enhanced ultrasonography is comparable to that of gastroscopy, and it could be used as the preferred method for the early screening of gastric tumors.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Incidence, health consequences, and social burden associated with child maltreatment appeared to be borne disproportionately by very young children. We conducted a population-based data linkage study to explore child- and family-level factors that affect receiving different diagnoses of maltreatment injuries and investigate excessive mortality throughout toddlerhood. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study comprising 2.2 million infants born in 2004-2014 in Taiwan. Incident cases of child maltreatment were defined by hospitalization or emergency department visits for three heterogeneous diagnostic groups of maltreatment-related injuries (i.e., maltreatment syndrome, assaults, and undetermined causes) within 12 months after birth. The generalized linear model and landmark survival analyses were used to evaluate risk factors. RESULTS: An estimated 2.9‰ of infants experienced at least one maltreatment-related injury, with a three-year mortality rate of 1.3%. Low birthweight was associated with increased risk of receiving the diagnosis of three maltreatment injuries, particularly maltreatment syndrome (adjusted Incidence Rate Ratio [aIRR] = 4.08, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.93-5.68). Socially advantaged family condition was inversely linked with receiving the diagnosis of maltreatment syndrome and assaults (e.g., high income: aIRR = 0.55 and 0.47), yet positively linked with undetermined cause (aIRR = 2.05, 95% CI: 1.89-2.23). For infants exposed to maltreatment, low birth weight and non-attendance of postnatal care were highly predictive of fatality; low birthweight served as a vital predictor for premature death during toddlerhood (aIRR = 6.17, 95% CI: 2.36-15.4). CONCLUSIONS: Raising awareness of maltreatment-related injuries in infancy and predictors should be a priority for appropriate follow-up assessment and timely intervention.

RESUMO

The evidence that parasitic animals exhibit elevated mitogenomic evolutionary rates is inconsistent and limited to Arthropoda. Similarly, the evidence that mitogenomic evolution is faster in species with low locomotory capacity is limited to a handful of animal lineages. We hypothesised that these two variables are associated and that locomotory capacity is a major underlying factor driving the elevated rates in parasites. Here, we study the evolutionary rates of mitogenomes of 10,906 bilaterian species classified according to their locomotory capacity and parasitic/free-living life history. In Bilateria, evolutionary rates were by far the highest in endoparasites, much lower in ectoparasites with reduced locomotory capacity and free-living lineages with low locomotory capacity, followed by parasitoids, ectoparasites with high locomotory capacity, and finally micropredatory and free-living lineages. The life history categorisation (parasitism) explained ≈45%, locomotory capacity categorisation explained ≈39%, and together they explained ≈56% of the total variability in evolutionary rates of mitochondrial protein-coding genes in Bilateria. Our findings suggest that these two variables play major roles in calibrating the mitogenomic molecular clock in bilaterian animals.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Early detection and resection of colorectal polyps by routine colonoscopy screening can be effective in reducing the risk of colorectal cancer (CRC). OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the association between diabetes mellitus (DM) and different types of colorectal polyps in the Chinese population. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on inpatients admitted to the Gastroenterology Department of our hospital from January to December 2019. Clinical data, and colonoscopy and pathology findings of the subjects were collected. Bivariate analysis was used to assess factors associated with colorectal polyps. Significant variables from the bivariate evaluation were included in a stepwise multivariate logistic regression analysis to recognize independent predictors of neoplastic polyps and high-risk adenomas. RESULTS: The proportion of patients with DM was significantly higher in patients with neoplastic polyps and high-risk adenomas than in patients without polyps. Age ≥ 50 years, male gender, and a first-degree relative with a history of CRC were independent risk factors for neoplastic polyps and high-risk adenomas, even in non-smokers. An independent risk factor analysis that did not include a family history of CRC showed that age, gender, and alcohol consumption were independent risk factors for neoplastic polyps and high-risk adenomas. DM was an independent risk factor for high-risk adenomas (OR=2.902, 95% CI=1.221-6.899; p=0.016) after adjusting for age, gender, alcohol consumption, and body mass index. Thus, a history of DM significantly increases the risk of high-risk adenomas. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that patients with DM, age ≥ 50 years, male gender, alcohol consumption, and a first-degree relative with a history of CRC should undergo regular endoscopic screening and colonic polypectomy.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluation of diffusion heterogeneity and vascular perfusion in tumor and peritumoral areas for prognostic prediction in high-grade glioma (HGG, WHO III/IV grade). METHODS: Forty patients with HGG underwent diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI), intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM), and arterial spin labeling (ASL) MRI before operation. After normalization, the parameters were divided into diffusion heterogeneity parameters (rD, rMD, rMK, rKr, rKa) and vascular perfusion parameters (rD*, rF, rCBF). Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses were used to evaluate associations between overall survival (OS) and the above parameters, clinical factors, and IDH1 status. The Mann-Whitney test was used to evaluate differences in the parameters between different IDH1 states. RESULTS: In the univariate Cox regression analysis, OS was significantly associated with tumor resection range, IDH1 status, tumor heterogeneity parameters (rD, rMD, rMK, rKr, rKa), and rCBF in tumor area(all p < 0.05). In addition, rD and rCBF measured in the peritumoral region were also predictors of poor OS (both p < 0.01). Multivariate Cox regression analysis indicated that rMK in the tumor area and rCBF in the peritumoral area (hazard ratio = 7.900 and 5.466, respectively, for each 0.1 increase in the normalized value) were independent predictors of OS. CONCLUSION: The rMK of tumor area and rCBF of peritumoral area had independent predictive value for OS in patients with HGG. ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE: This study explored useful imaging biomarkers from the diffusion heterogeneity and vascular perfusion of tumor and peritumoral areas in HGG, which is useful to help clinician to make precise therapeutic plans, and predict the prognostic for glioma patients.

RESUMO

Thiopental sodium (TPTS) is a barbiturate general anesthetic, while its effects on hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R)-induced injury are still unclear. This study aimed to investigate whether TPTS exerts protective effects against the H/R-induced osteoblast cell injury and explore the underlying mechanisms. Osteoblast cell injury model was induced by the H/R condition, which was treated with or without TPTS. Cell viability and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release were determined by the corresponding commercial kits. The levels of oxidative stress were determined in the experimental groups. Cell apoptosis and Caspase-3 activities were determined by propidium iodide staining and substrate-based assay, respectively. Western blotting and qRT-PCR were performed to measure the mRNA and protein levels, respectively. Treatment with TPTS was able to increase cell viability and reduce LDH release in H/R-induced osteoblasts. Additionally, TPTS regulated oxidative stress in H/R-induced osteoblasts by suppressing malondialdehyde (MDA) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) as well as boosting superoxide dismutase (SOD). TPTS was able to suppress cell apoptosis by suppressing Caspase-3 activity and cleavage. TPTS exerted protective effects against cell injury and apoptosis induced by the H/R conditions, which were associated with its regulation of Akt signaling. Moreover, TPTS induced osteoblast differentiation under the H/R condition. In summary, TPTS attenuates H/R-induced injury in osteoblasts by regulating AKT signaling.

RESUMO

The objective of this paper is to present a novel design of intelligent neuro-supervised networks (INSNs) in order to study the dynamics of a mathematical model for Parkinson's disease illness (PDI), governed with three differential classes to represent the rhythms of brain electrical activity measurements at different locations in the cerebral cortex. The proposed INSNs are constructed by exploiting the knacks of multilayer structure neural networks back-propagated with the Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) and Bayesian regularization (BR) optimization approaches. The reference data for the grids of input and the target samples of INSNs were formulated with a reliable numerical solver via the Adams method for sundry scenarios of PDI models by way of variation of sensor locations in order to measure the impact of the rhythms of brain electrical activity. The designed INSNs for both backpropagation procedures were implemented on created datasets segmented arbitrarily into training, testing, and validation samples by optimization of mean squared error based fitness function. Comparison of outcomes on the basis of exhaustive simulations of proposed INSNs via both LM and BR methodologies was conducted with reference solutions of PDI models by means of learning curves on MSE, adaptive control parameters of algorithms, absolute error, histogram error plots, and regression index. The outcomes endorse the efficacy of both INSNs solvers for different scenarios in PDI models, but the accuracy of the BR-based method is relatively superior, albeit at the cost of slightly more computations.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Administering premixed drugs in commodity packets was first reported in Asia in 2015, but there continues to be a dearth of related population-based data. This study aimed at examining (1) the prevalence of drug packet use in the population and (2) the sociodemographic profiles, particularly gender distribution, of drug packet users. METHODS: Data were derived from a survey of 18,626 Taiwanese civilians, aged 12-64 years, using stratified, multi-stage, random sampling in 2018. Participants anonymously completed a computer-assisted self-interview on tablet computers which covered the use and problematic use of illicit drugs/inhalants, prescription drugs and other psychoactive substances, among others. RESULTS: Approximately 1.46% of respondents had a lifetime use of illicit drugs, with drugs in commodity packets (0.18%) being ranked the fifth-most commonly used illicit drugs, higher than nitrous oxide (0.14%) and heroin (0.09%). Ten formats of drug packets were endorsed by users. Approximately 81.6% of persons with drug packet use had a lifetime use of other illicit drugs. The correlates of the use of drugs in commodity packets were similar to those of the exclusive use of other drugs except that there was a lack of gender differences in the use of drugs in commodity packets but not in the exclusive use of other drugs. CONCLUSION: Drugs in commodity packets have become a common way of administering illicit drugs in the population in Taiwan, and there were no gender differences among users. Our findings have implications for more efficient drug testing and culturally appropriate intervention for drug packet use.

RESUMO

This paper provides experimental data on the temperature rise during granular flows in a small-scale rotating drum due to heat generation. All heat is believed to be generated by conversion of some mechanical energy, through mechanisms such as friction and collisions between particles and between particles and walls. Particles of different material types were used, while multiple rotation speeds were considered, and the drum was filled with different amounts of particles. The temperature of the granular materials inside the rotating drum was monitored using a thermal camera. The temperature increases at specific times of each experiment are presented in form of tables, along with the average and standard deviation of the repetitions of each setup configuration. The data can be used as a reference to set the operating conditions of rotating drums, in addition to calibrating numerical models and validating computer simulations.

RESUMO

Several advances in computing facilities were made due to the advancement of science and technology, including the implementation of automation in multi-specialty hospitals. This research aims to develop an efficient deep-learning-based brain-tumor (BT) detection scheme to detect the tumor in FLAIR- and T2-modality magnetic-resonance-imaging (MRI) slices. MRI slices of the axial-plane brain are used to test and verify the scheme. The reliability of the developed scheme is also verified through clinically collected MRI slices. In the proposed scheme, the following stages are involved: (i) pre-processing the raw MRI image, (ii) deep-feature extraction using pretrained schemes, (iii) watershed-algorithm-based BT segmentation and mining the shape features, (iv) feature optimization using the elephant-herding algorithm (EHA), and (v) binary classification and verification using three-fold cross-validation. Using (a) individual features, (b) dual deep features, and (c) integrated features, the BT-classification task is accomplished in this study. Each experiment is conducted separately on the chosen BRATS and TCIA benchmark MRI slices. This research indicates that the integrated feature-based scheme helps to achieve a classification accuracy of 99.6667% when a support-vector-machine (SVM) classifier is considered. Further, the performance of this scheme is verified using noise-attacked MRI slices, and better classification results are achieved.
