OBJECTIVE: SARS-CoV-2 causes acute respiratory disease, interstitial and alveolar pneumonia, and involves numerous organs and systems such as the kidney, heart, digestive tract, blood, and nervous system. We aimed to evaluate the incidence of renal manifestations in patients diagnosed with COVID-19 infection. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We performed a monocentric, cross-sectional, observational study, conducted on 114 patients with SARS-CoV-2. Clinical and laboratory parameters [renal function, serum electrolytes, inflammatory state, blood gas analysis, Interleukin 6 (IL-6) and urinalysis] were evaluated. The same values were checked out after two months (T1), however after negativization. RESULTS: We enrolled 114 patients (59 males) with a mean age of 63.8 ± 13.9 years. We found hematuria in 48 patients (55.8%), proteinuria in 33 patients (38.4%), leukocyturia in 61 patients (70.9%), acute kidney injury (AKI) in 28 patients (24.6%), AKI in chronic kidney disease (CKD) in 24 patients (21.1%). Moreover, we found a significant increase of inflammatory indexes as C Reactive Protein (CRP), lactic dehydrogenase (LDH), alpha 1 and alpha 2 globulins with a subsequent reduction at T1 (p = 0.016, p < 0.001, p = 0.005, p = 0.007; respectively). Hemoglobin and erythrocyte values significantly decreased (p < 0.001, p = 0.003, respectively), and we found lymphopenia (p < 0.001). Also, we found elevated levels of the D-Dimer (p < 0.001) and a significant increase in the International Normalized Ratio (INR) (p = 0.038). We also showed a significant improvement after negativization in oxygen partial pressure (p = 0.001) and oxygen saturation (p < 0.001) and a significant increase in pH (p = 0.018) and bicarbonate concentration (p = 0.042). Moreover, we found a significant increase in IL-6 (p = 0.004). Also, we reported mild hyponatremia and hypokalemia with subsequent significant recovery (p < 0.001, p < 0.001, respectively) and mild hypochloremia with a recovery to the limits of statistical significance (p = 0.053). At the entrance, we found an increase in serum glucose with a significant reduction during recovery (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of AKI and/or CKD and/or abnormal urinalysis in patients diagnosed with COVID-19 on admission seems to be high and appears as a negative prognostic factor. Urinalysis appears to be very useful in unveiling the potential kidney impairment of COVID-19 patients; therefore, urinalysis could be used to reflect and predict the disease severity. We also recommend a careful evaluation of metabolic alterations, inflammatory states, and electrolytic disorders in COVID-19 patients.

RESUMO

COVID-19 is a novel disease with a broad range of clinical patterns. Several patients show dysbiosis in the intestinal tract, with evidence of reduced beneficial bacteria, such as Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli. It is well established that human gut microbiota dysbiosis is associated with several clinical conditions, including respiratory tract diseases due to the gut-lung axis. This narrative review discusses the role of nutrients in the relationship between the gut microbiota and the immune response in SARS-CoV-2 infection. In particular, we will focus on the benefits offered by vitamins and micronutrients on different aspects of COVID-19 disease while also discussing which diets seem to provide the most advantages.

OBJECTIVE: This study examines the role of MTHFR gene polymorphism (rs1801133) in women with lipedema (LIPPY) body composition parameters compared to a control group (CTRL). SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We carried out a study on a sample of 45 LIPPY and 50 women as a CTRL. Body composition parameters were examined by Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA). A genetic test was performed for the MTHFR polymorphism (rs1801133, 677C>T) using a saliva sample for LIPPY and CTRL groups. Mann-Whitney tests evaluated statistically significant differences between four groups (carriers and non-carriers of the MTHFR polymorphism for LIPPY and CTRL groups) on anthropometric/body composition parameters to identify patterns. RESULTS: LIPPY showed significantly higher (p<0.05) anthropometric parameters (weight, BMI, waist, abdominal, hip circumferences) and lower waist/hip ratio (p<0.05) compared to the CTRL group. The association between the polymorphism alleles related to the rs1801133 MTHFR gene and the body composition values LIPPY carriers (+) showed an increase in fat tissue of legs and fat region of legs percentage, arm's fat mass (g), leg's fat mass (g), and leg's lean mass (g) (p<0.05) compared to CTRL (+). Lean/fat arms and lean/fat legs were lower (p<0.05) in LIPPY (+) than in CTRL (+). In the LIPPY (+), the risk of developing the lipedema disease was 2.85 times higher (OR=2.85; p<0.05; 95% confidence interval = 0.842-8.625) with respect to LIPPY (-) and CTRL. CONCLUSIONS: The presence or absence of MTHFR polymorphism offers predictive parameters that could better characterize women with lipedema based on the association between body composition and MTHFR presence.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and ocular disease share several cardiovascular risk factors as well as pathogenetic mechanisms having Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System (RAAS) as main actor. Moreover, kidney and eyes have common genetic and embryonic origin. In this literature review, we present main evidence supporting this association for early identifying diseases affecting both systems and evaluating potential multi-target therapeutic strategies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a literature review of the current peer-reviewed English-language randomized controlled studies (RCTs), reference lists of nephrology or ophthalmology textbooks, review articles and relevant studies with ocular or eye and kidney or renal diseases as keywords until March 2020. Prospective and retrospective studies as well as meta-analyses and latest systematic reviews were included. RESULTS: We evaluated a total of 683 records, finally selecting 119 articles related to ocular and renal diseases. Records were divided into two areas: chronic and acute kidney disease and ocular or eye diseases. Some of the examined studies were discarded for population biases/intervention or deemed unfit. CONCLUSIONS: Based on our results, we conclude that there is evidence of a clear association between kidney and eye diseases, being this cross-link mainly based on RAAS dysregulation. Our review suggests that it may be useful to screen CKD patients for associated ocular diseases, such as cataract, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration. A comprehensive study of CKD and proteinuric patients should include careful eye examination. Renal impairment in young patients should prompt a search for ocular disease, such as TUNA syndrome or oculo-renal syndrome, in particular if family history of concurrent ocular and renal disease is present. Anti-RAAS agents are mostly recommended in patients with renal and ocular impairment.

OBJECTIVE: Arterial hypertension (AH) represents a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease and is associated to several complications, such as prolonged corrected QT (QTc) interval and impaired heart rate variability (HRV). Secondary causes of AH include autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) and atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis (ARAS), both known to be related to arrhythmic risk and autonomic imbalance. The aim of the study is to evaluate whether global autonomic activity and QTc interval differently affect ADPKD and ARAS hypertensive patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: An observational study was performed on 59 patients: 16 ADPKD patients and 19 diagnosed with ARAS, compared to 24 healthy controls (HC). All patients underwent clinical evaluation, biochemical lab tests, 24-hour electrocardiogram (ECG) and renal Doppler ultrasound. HRV was assessed through the analysis of 24-hour ECG to detect standard deviation of normal-to-normal RR intervals (SDNN). QTc interval was defined as prolonged when > 440 msec. RESULTS: SDNN was significantly lower in ADPKD and ARAS patients than HC (p < 0.0001) and no significant differences were found between ADPKD and ARAS patients (p > 0.05). QTc was found significantly higher in ARAS patients than HC (p = 0.001) and in ARAS patients than ADPKD patients (p = 0.004). CONCLUSIONS: The pathogenesis of hypertension in ADPKD and ARAS patients is related to the activation of the renin angiotensin aldosterone system (RAAS). In ADPKD, cyst enlargement leads to kidney ischemia and renin release, associated to endothelial dysfunction, low nitric oxide and sympathetic tone activation. Differently, reduction in renal perfusion pressure activates RAAS and renal adrenergic nerves in ARAS patients. We can speculate that prolonged QTc interval is more present in ARAS vs. ADPKD hypertensive patients due to a greater activation of RAAS. We suggest adding 24-hour HRV evaluation in association with traditional risk factors in course of ADPKD and ARAS hypertension to better stratify cardiovascular risk in these groups of patients.

Kidney diseases are associated with many cardiovascular risk factors, such as anaemia, inflammation and chronic volume overload. Changes in the sympathovagal balance are common findings in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). In particular, sympathetic hyperactivity is linked with an increase in resting heart rate leading to myocardial hypertrophy and fibrosis. The latter increases the risk of sudden cardiac death from fatal arrythmias and therefore assessment of both sympathetic and parasympathetic tones could be clinically relevant in ESRD patients. Heart rate variability and other indices are currently used to evaluate the functionality of the autonomic nervous system. Some of these have emerged as potential diagnostic tools that can support clinical decision-making processes and therapeutic strategies in patients with renal disease, including those who are on dialysis replacement therapy. In this review, we summarize the impact and the relationships between sympathovagal disturbances and kidney diseases, replacement therapies and transplantation.

PURPOSE: To retrospectively evaluate the inter-observer agreement between a radiologist and a radiation oncologist and volume differences, in T2 and diffusion-weighted (DWI) MRI of gross tumor volume (GTV) delineation, in rectal cancer patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two observers, a radiologist and a radiation oncologist, delineated GTVs of 50 patients on T2-weighted MRI (T2GTV) and echo planar DWI (DWIGTV). Observers agreement was assessed using DICE index, Bland-Altman analysis and intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC). Student's t-test was used for GTV comparison. RESULTS: Median T2GTV and DWIGTV were 17.09±14.12 cm3 (1.92-62.03) and 12.79±12.31 cm3 (1.23-62.25) for radiologist, and 16.82±13.66 cm3 (1.78-65.9) and 13.72±12.77 cm3 (1.29-69.75) for radiation oncologist. T2GTV were significantly larger compared to DWIGTV (P<0.001 and P<0.001, for both observers). Mean DICE index for T2GTV and DWIGTV were 0.80±0.07 and 0.77±0.06. The mean difference between the two observers were 0.26cm3 (95% CI: -5.36 to 5.88) and -1.13cm3 (95% CI: -5.70 to 3.44) for T2 and DWI volumes. The ICC for T2 volumes was 0.989 (95% CI: 0.981-0.994) (P<0.001) and 0.992 (95% CI: 0.986-0.996) (P<0.001) for DWI volumes. CONCLUSION: DWI resulted in smaller volumes delineation compared to T2-weighted MRI. Substantial and almost perfect agreements were reported for DWIGTV and T2GTV between radiologist and radiation oncologist. Due to the fact that DWI could be considered a simple technique for volume delineation for radiation oncologist, DWI could be used to improve quality in radiation planning for an accurate boost volume delineation when a dose escalation is investigated.

OBJECTIVE: Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD) is a heterogeneous inherited disease characterized by renal and extrarenal manifestations with progressive fluid-filled cyst development leading to end-stage renal disease. Our aim was to evaluate the prevalence of obstructive urological disease in ADPKD patients and possible associations with endothelial dysfunction, nutritional, metabolic and inflammatory markers. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included ADPKD patients and control group, who carried out uroflowmetry, an assessment of renal function, metabolic and nutritional parameters and an evaluation of endothelial dysfunction and atherosclerotic markers, such as Renal Resistive Index (RRI), Intima-Media Thickness (IMT) and Flow-Mediated Dilation (FMD). RESULTS: We enrolled 37 ADPKD patients (20 males with 51.0 ± 14.3 years) and 34 control group (18 males with 60.7 ± 14.4 years). We showed a significant reduction in Max Flow Rate (Qmax) (p ≤ 0.001), age (p = 0.006), FMD (p = 0.023) and Voiding Volume (p = 0.053), in addition to a significant increase in Voiding Time and Diastolic Blood Pressure (p ≤ 0.001, p = 0.049; respectively) in ADPKD patients with respect to control group. Moreover, we found a negative correlation between Qmax and creatinine (r= -0.44, p = 0.007), RRI (r= -0.49, p ≤0.001) and intact Parathyroid Hormone (r = -0.329, p = 0.046), while we found a positive correlation between Qmax and MDRD (r = 0.327, p = 0.048) and between Voiding Time and serum uric acid (r= 0.34, p = 0.039) in ADPKD patients with respect to control group. CONCLUSIONS: In our study, we showed an elevated prevalence of urological functional diseases in ADPKD patients; therefore, we suggest to include uroflowmetry in the assessment of these patients, considering the non-invasiveness, repeatability and low cost of the exam. An early intervention could slow down the progression of renal damage and an early screening of the main cardiovascular risk factors could reduce the high morbidity and mortality in ADPKD patients.

Gut microbiota is key to the development and modulation of the mucosal immune system. It plays a central role in several physiological functions, in the modulation of inflammatory signaling and in the protection against infections. In healthy states, there is a perfect balance between commensal and pathogens, and microbiota and the immune system interact to maintain gut homeostasis. The alteration of such balance, called dysbiosis, determines an intestinal bacterial overgrowth which leads to the disruption of the intestinal barrier with systemic translocation of pathogens. The pancreas does not possess its own microbiota, and it is believed that inflammatory and neoplastic processes affecting the gland may be linked to intestinal dysbiosis. Increasing research evidence testifies a correlation between intestinal dysbiosis and various pancreatic disorders, but it remains unclear whether dysbiosis is the cause or an effect. The analysis of specific alterations in the microbiome profile may permit to develop novel tools for the early detection of several pancreatic disorders, utilizing samples, such as blood, saliva, and stools. Future studies will have to elucidate the mechanisms by which gut microbiota is modulated and how it tunes the immune system, in order to be able to develop innovative treatment strategies for pancreatic disorders.

BACKGROUND: Hypothyroidism, characterised by low/normal free thyroxine (FT4) and free triiodothyronine (FT3) with elevated thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), is a well-known complication of nephrotic syndrome (NS). This is a common feature of primary and secondary glomerular diseases and comprises loss of protein in the urine and increased urinary excretion of thyroid hormones and thyroxine- binding globulin. With a normal thyroid reserve, this scenario is associated with the development of subclinical hypothyroidism, with a slight increase in TSH and normal free fractions. However, with a low thyroid reserve the transition toward overt hypothyroidism is almost inevitable, affecting morbidity and mortality. As T4 replacement is a cheap and well-established treatment to achieve a stable hormone status in different types of thyroid deficiency, it is essential to recognise and appropriately treat this condition. CONCLUSION: In this article we summarise the evidence on this nephro-endocrine disorder in humans and focus on diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.

OBJECTIVE: Cardio-Renal Syndrome (CRS) is a condition, which is more frequently observed in clinical practice. The aim of this study is to explore nutritional status and intrarenal arterial stiffness in patients affected by CRS. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 14 consecutive CRS patients, screened for anthropometry, biochemistry, nutritional and metabolic status underwent renal Doppler ultrasound and whole-body bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS). RESULTS: We found a positive correlation between phase angle (PA) and CKD-EPI and MDRD (p=0.011 and p=0.007), and between body mass index and renal resistive index (RRI) (p=0.002). Finally, we found a negative correlation between fat-free mass and RRI (p=0.024). CONCLUSIONS: Body composition assessment may improve the care of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Also, BIS may help identify changes in hydration status in CKD patients resulting as a significant predictor of mortality.

OBJECTIVE: To study the 3' immunoglobulin heavy-chain regulatory region (3'RR) enhancer complex, active in class switching recombination and in B-cells, in Crohn's disease. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 167 patients [79 females (47.3%) and 88 males (52.7%)] affected by Crohn's disease were enrolled in the study. As a control, we included 64 healthy subjects, age and sex matched, from the same geographical area. Blood tests were performed on all subjects to determine their antibody levels and to detect the presence of any possible infections. We conducted a selective PCR, which amplified the hs1.2-A region. The nested second PCR to amplify the polymorphic core of the enhancer was performed. RESULTS: No differences between cases and controls were observed with respect to sex distribution (43.8% females among controls and 49.5% among cases), age, tTG IgA, RF, serum or secretory IgA, IgG1, IgG2 and IgG3. No correlation was found between both seric and secretory immunoglobulins levels, with except of statistically significant differences between cases and controls with respect to IgA and IgG ASCA positivity (p<0.001), serum IgG4 (p<0.001) and IgD (p=0.001). CONCLUSIONS: We have demonstrated that in Crohn's disease, the HS1,2 immunoglobulins enhancer is not implicated in the disease pathogenesis. Moreover, we have found that IgG4 levels are lower in Crohn's disease patients than in controls; these data may be related to an impairment of number and function of Tregs, further linked to the presence of tissue inflammation. Crohn's disease is a complex multifactorial disease. The pathogenesis of Crohn's disease is incompletely understood although it is clear that the disease involves multiple interacting agents.

OBJECTIVE: The role of capsule endoscopy (CE) in Crohn's disease (CD) has expanded with greater understanding of the technology. The ability of CE to differentiate CD from other causes of inflammation has been questioned. Longitudinal studies are required to assess the long-term impact and significance of CE findings in suspected CD. The aim of this work is to verify in how many misunderstood cases of suspected Crohn's Disease CE was able to identify precociously and "by chance" when it is performed for recurrent obscure GI bleeding (OGIB), to evaluate how many of them were later confirmed during a median 24 months follow-up. Moreover, we observed the role of the early diagnosis in changing the clinical management of these patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective review was carried out on CE procedures performed for suspected OGIB. 1008 consecutive patients was enrolled and 492 included in the study. Previous investigations such as ileo-colonoscopy and/or previous small bowel imaging were documented. Only patients with at least 6 months of documented follow-up were included. A chart review was undertaken to record CE findings/correlate with subsequent diagnosis and outcome. RESULTS: 94/492 (19.1%) patients positive for suspected CD were identified. Follow-up data were available 64/94 (68%). The mean follow-up was 24 months. There was a strong positive correlation between results of CE and subsequent clinical diagnosis. The suspected CD was confirmed in 100% (94/94) of follow-up patients. CONCLUSIONS: CE appears able to identify lesions compatible with suspected Crohn's disease otherwise unacknowledged with consequently change in treatment options for the patients.

Celiac disease (CD) is an immune-mediated enteropathy, triggered by dietary wheat gluten and similar proteins of barley and rye in genetically susceptible individuals. This is a complex disorder involving both environmental and immune-genetic factors. The major genetic risk factor for CD is determined by HLA-DQ genes. Dysfunction of the innate and adaptive immune systems can conceivably cause impairment of mucosal barrier function and development of localized or systemic inflammatory and autoimmune processes. Exposure to gluten is the main environmental trigger responsible for the signs and symptoms of the disease, but exposure to gluten does not fully explain the manifestation of CD. Thus, both genetic determination and environmental exposure to gluten are necessary for the full manifestation of CD; neither of them is sufficient alone. Epidemiological and clinical data suggest that other environmental factors, including infections, alterations in the intestinal microbiota composition, and early feeding practices, might also play a role in disease development. Thus, this interaction is the condicio sine qua non celiac disease can develop. The breakdown of the interaction among microbiota, innate immunity, and genetic and dietary factors leads to disruption of homeostasis and inflammation; and tissue damage occurs. Focusing attention on this interaction and its breakdown may allow a better understanding of the CD pathogenesis and lead to novel translational avenues for preventing and treating this widespread disease.

BACKGROUND: Oxygen desaturation and reoxygenation, related to intermittent hypoxia cycles due to upper airway obstruction, are major pathophysiologic features of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) and are thought to be responsible for an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is therefore considered the gold standard in the management of OSAS. Further data demonstrated a high prevalence of OSAS in patients with altered renal function despite the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms that have not been clarified. This study aims to provide evidence on the reported high prevalence of endothelial dysfunction and alterations of the intrarenal hemodynamic in patients affected by OSAS. Furthermore, we evaluated the effect of a CPAP therapy on these endpoints. METHODS: Twenty patients were enrolled in a prospective study and underwent ultrasound examination to assess endothelial dysfunction, by collecting brachial flow-mediated dilation (FMD) and intrarenal artery stiffness, pre- and post a 30-day treatment with CPAP. RESULTS: Endothelial dysfunction and intrarenal artery stiffness significantly improved in all patients after a month of CPAP. In particular, we observed a significant reduction in the renal resistance index (RI) (p < 0.001) and systolic/diastolic ratio (S/D) ratio (p < 0.001) and a significant increase of FMD (p < 0.001). The apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) showed a negative correlation with Δ FMD (p < 0.05, r = -0.46). Conversely, a positive correlation exists between Δ RI and the oxygen desaturation index (ODI) (specificare la sigla) (p < 0.05, r = 0.46). CONCLUSIONS: Our study firstly showed a significant effect of CPAP on renal perfusion and endothelial function in OSAS patients without concomitant cardiovascular comorbidities.

A variety of infections has been recognized as an important cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with nephrotic syndrome, and membranous nephropathy is a common cause of this in the elderly. The reasons for infection risk are due to oedema complications, urinary loss of factor B and D of the alternative complement pathway, cellular immunity, granulocyte chemotaxis, hypogammaglobulinemia with serum IgG levels below 600 mg/dL, and secondary effects of immunosuppressive therapy. Many different prophylactic interventions have been used for reducing the risks of infection in these patients but recommendations for routine use are still lacking. We report two membranous nephropathy cases in the elderly in which Intravenous immunoglobulin were useful in long-term infectious prophylaxis, showing safety in renal function. During immunosuppressant therapy in membranous nephropathy, intravenous immunoglobulin without sucrose are a safe therapeutic option as prophylaxis in those patients with nephrotic syndrome and IgG levels below 600 mg/dL. The long-term goal of infection prevention in these patients is to reduce mortality, prolong survival and improve quality of life.

BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) show a risk of cardiovascular death, which is 10-100 times higher than that in the general population. This increase is not completely explained by the traditional cardiovascular risk factors. Hyperuricemia and hyperhomocysteinemia are highly prevalent in CKD. Patients suffering from these complications present accelerated atherosclerosis, determined mainly from the endothelial dysfunction that carries out a central role in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases. AIM: The hypothesis was that brachial artery flow mediated dilation (FMD) and carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) evaluation can be considered as early and systemic markers of atherosclerosis and that nontraditional risk factors, such as hyperhomocysteinemia and hyperuricemia, are associated with early endothelial dysfunction and vascular damage in patients suffering from first- and second-stage CKD. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study comprised 50 patients, 10 for each CKD stage, and 15 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. We compared the traditional and nontraditional factors for cardiovascular diseases with alterations of vascular reactivity, such as cIMT, and brachial artery FMD, in patients affected by CKD with those in the control group. RESULTS: In our study, hyperuricemia was significantly and independently associated with brachial artery FMD reduction (p = 0.007), while hyperhomocysteinemia was significantly and independently associated with carotid intima-media thickening (p = 0.021) in patients at Stage I and II KDOQI (Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative). CONCLUSIONS: In our study, we found a progressive increase in the inflammatory indices and endothelial dysfunction at the early stages of CKD. Hyperuricemia and hyperhomocysteinemia were associated with IMT and FMD at Stage I-III KDOQI, and can be used as markers of subclinical atherosclerosis, especially in nephropathic patients with high cardiovascular risk.

Erectile dysfunction (ED) prevalence in male systemic sclerosis (SSc) is high and its pathogenesis is unclear. The aim of the study is to assess correlation between Doppler ultrasound indices of penis and kidneys or digital arteries in male systemic sclerosis. Fourteen men with systemic sclerosis were enrolled in this study. Erectile function was investigated by the International Index of Erectile Function-5. Peak systolic velocity, end diastolic velocity, resistive index, pulsative index, and systolic/diastolic ratio were measured on the cavernous arteries at the peno-scrotal junction in the flaccid state, on the interlobar artery of both kidneys and all ten proper palmar digital arteries. Ten (71 percent) patients have an International Index of Erectile Function-5 less than 21. Reduction of penis peak systolic velocity was observed in all SSc subjects. Doppler indices of cavernous arteries correlate with the International Index of Erectile Function-5. The renal and digital arteries resistive index demonstrated a good correlation (p less than 0.0001) with International Index of Erectile Function-5. A positive correlation exists between penis and kidney arteries Doppler indices: end diastolic velocity (p less than 0.05, r=0.54), resistive index (p less than 0.0001, r=0.90), systolic/diastolic ratio (p less than 0.01, r=0.69). A positive correlation was observed between penis and digital arteries Doppler indices: peak systolic velocity (p less than 0.01, r=0.68), end diastolic velocity (p less than 0.01, r=0.75), resistive index (p less than 0.001, r=0.79), systolic/diastolic ratio (p less than 0.05, r=0.59). A correlation exists between arterial impairment of penis and renal or digital arteries.
