The main objective of the present study was to clarify the anatomical characteristics of the GDA. In order to fulfill this objective, novel classification systems of both the origin and branching pattern of the said vessel were created. Being aware of the variable anatomy of the GDA is of great importance when performing hepatopancreaticobilliary procedures. The results of 75 consecutive patients who underwent abdomen computed tomography angiography (CTA) were analyzed. A total of 74 GDA were analyzed. Of these, 42 were from women (56.8%) and 32 were from men (43.2%). The most common direction of origin of the GDA was inferior (n = 38; 51.4%). The origin variation of each GDA was deeply analyzed. Initially, eight types of origin variations were evaluated, of which types 1-3 constituted 83.8%. Furthermore, analogously, branching pattern types were also established. Initially, 11 branching variations were evaluated, of which types 1-3 constituted 87.8%. The GDA is subject to numerous variations, both in the origin and in the branching pattern of the vessel. In order to clarify the anatomical characteristics of this vessel, novel classifications of the origin and branching patterns were made, presenting the most frequent patterns. Our results may be of great use for surgeons performing hepatopancreaticobilliary surgeries, such as the Whipple procedure or vascular reconstructions after cholangiocarcinoma resections. Being aware of the anatomical variations of relevant structures associated with a surgical procedure may help reduce potential intraoperative and/or postoperative complications.

Overvaluation of shape and weight (OSW) is supported as an important mechanism underlying improvement in bulimia nervosa (BN) during behavioral therapies (CBTs). It is not yet clear, however, whether changes in OSW temporally precede and prospectively predict changes in BN symptoms during CBTs, limiting the ability to establish causality. The present study is the first to examine whether session-by-session changes in OSW prospectively predict session-by-session changes in BN symptoms during CBTs and clinical outcomes at the end-of-treatment. Participants with BN (n = 44) who received 20 sessions of CBTs completed a brief survey at each session assessing OSW and BN symptom frequency during the past week. Results showed small but significant session-by-session reductions in OSW and BN symptoms during CBTs. Session-by-session improvements in OSW in any given week prospectively predicted reductions in restrictive eating, binge eating, and compulsive exercise in the following week but did not prospectively predict improvements in purging, while improvements in restrictive eating and compulsive exercise in any given week prospectively predicted reductions in OSW in the following week. Average session-by-session change in OSW during treatment was positively associated with remission status and improvements in eating pathology at the end-of-treatment. Changes in OSW temporally precede and prospectively predict changes in BN symptoms during CBTs, and vice versa. These findings may have critical implications for treatment planning and implementation.

The arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are involved in one of the most ecologically important symbioses on the planet, occurring within the roots of most land plants.1 Knowledge of even basic elements of AM fungal biology is still poor, with the discovery that AMF may in fact have a sexual life cycle being only very recently reported.2-5 AMF produce asexual spores that contain up to several thousand individual haploid nuclei6 of either largely uniform genotypes (AMF homokaryons) or nuclei originating from two parental genotypes2-5 (AMF dikaryons or heterokaryons). In contrast to the sexual dikaryons in the phyla Ascomycota and Basidiomycota,7,8 in which pairs of nuclei coexist in single hyphal compartments, AMF dikaryons carry several thousand nuclei in a coenocytic mycelium. Here, we set out to better understand the dynamics of this unique multinucleate condition by combining molecular analyses with advanced microscopy and modeling. Herein, we report that select AMF dikaryotic strains carry the distinct nucleotypes in equal proportions to one another, whereas others show an unequal distribution of parental nucleotypes. In both cases, the relative proportions within a given strain are inherently stable. Simulation models suggest that AMF dikaryons may be maintained through nuclear cooperation dynamics. Remarkably, we report that these nuclear ratios shift dramatically in response to plant host identity, revealing a previously unknown layer of genetic complexity and dynamism within the intimate interactions that occur between the partners of a prominent terrestrial symbiosis.

The objective of this study was to determine if pulsatile LH secretion was needed for ovarian follicular wave emergence and growth in the anestrous ewe. In Experiment 1, ewes were either large or small (10 x 0.47 or 5 x 0.47 cm, respectively; n = 5/group) sc implants releasing estradiol-17 beta for 10 d (Day 0 = day of implant insertion), to suppress pulsed LH secretion, but not FSH secretion. Five sham-operated control ewes received no implants. In Experiment 2, 12 ewes received large estradiol-releasing implants for 12 d (Day 0 = day of implant insertion); six were given GnRH (200 ng IV) every 4 h for the last 6 d that the implants were in place (to reinitiate pulsed LH secretion) whereas six Control ewes were given saline. Ovarian ultrasonography and blood sampling were done daily; blood samples were also taken every 12 min for 6 h on Days 5 and 9, and on Days 6 and 12 of the treatment period in Experiments 1 and 2, respectively. Treatment with estradiol blocked pulsatile LH secretion (P < 0.001). In Experiment 1, implant treatment halted follicular wave emergence between Days 2 and 10. In Experiment 2, follicular waves were suppressed during treatment with estradiol, but resumed following GnRH treatment. In both experiments, the range of peaks in serum FSH concentrations that preceded and triggered follicular wave emergence was almost the same as control ewes and those given estradiol implants alone or with GnRH; mean concentrations did not differ (P < 0.05). We concluded that some level of pulsatile LH secretion was required for the emergence of follicular waves that were triggered by peaks in serum FSH concentrations in the anestrous ewe.
