RESUMO

Di-tert-butyldiphosphatetrahedrane (tBuCP)2 (1) is a mixed carbon- and phosphorus-based tetrahedral molecule, isolobal to white phosphorus (P4). However, despite the fundamental significance and well-explored reactivity of the latter molecule, the precise structure of the free (tBuCP)2 molecule (1) and a detailed analysis of its electronic properties have remained elusive. Here, single-crystal X-ray structure determination of 1 at low temperature confirms the tetrahedral structure. Furthermore, quantum chemical calculations confirm that 1 is isolobal to P4 and shows a strong largely isotropic diamagnetic response in the magnetic field and thus pronounced spherical aromaticity. A spectroscopic and computational study on the photochemical reactivity reveals that diphosphatetrahedrane 1 readily dimerises to the ladderane-type phosphaalkyne tetramer (tBuCP)4 (2) under irradiation with UV light. With sufficient thermal activation energy, the dimerisation proceeds also in the dark. In both cases, an isomerisation to a 1,2-diphosphacyclobutadiene 1' is the first step. This intermediate subsequently undergoes a [2 + 2] cycloaddition with a second 1,2-diphosphacyclobutadiene molecule to form 2. The 1,2-diphosphacyclobutadiene intermediate 1' can be trapped chemically by N-methylmaleimide as an alternative [2 + 2] cycloaddition partner.

RESUMO

The synthesis of the first pincer ligand featuring a strictly T-shaped group 15 element and its coordination behaviour towards transition metals is described. The platform is itself derived from a trianionic redox non-innocent NNN scaffold. In addition to providing a rigid coordination environment to constrain a Bi centre in a T-shaped geometry to manipulate its frontier molecular orbital constitution, the NNN chelate displays highly covalent bonding towards the geometrically constrained Bi centre. The formation of intriguing ambiphilic Bi-M bonding interactions is demonstrated upon formation of a pincer complex as well as a multimetallic cluster. All compounds are comprehensively characterised by spectroscopic methods including X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure (XANES) spectroscopy and complemented by DFT calculations.

RESUMO

A carbon-rich molecule is synthesized, which mainly contains conjugated sp2 and sp hybridized carbon centers. Alkenyl and alkynyl binding sites are arranged such that this compound serves as ligand to a binuclear metal unit with a RhI─RhI bond. Furthermore, CH units are placed in proximity to the metal centers. The dicationic complex [Rh2(bipy)2{Ph2Ptrop(C≡CCy)2}]2+(OTf-)2 allows to study possible responses of the carbon-framework to redox reactions as well as deprotonation reactions. All products are, whenever possible, characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) methods, NMR and EPR spectroscopy as well as electrochemical methods. It is shown that the carbon skeleton of the ligand framework undergoes C─C bond rearrangement reactions of remarkable diversity. In combination with DFT (density functional theory) studies, these results allow to gain insight into the electronic structure changes caused by metal sites in a carbon-rich environment, which may be of relevance for the properties of metal particles on carbon support materials when they are exposed to hydrogen, electrons, or protons.

RESUMO

Starting from C6 H4 (PCl2 )2 and the TMS-substituted ylide (TMS)2 C=PR3 (TMS=trimethylsilyl, R=p-tolyl), the phosphonium-substituted diphosphaindenylide PPI was prepared in two steps. CASSCF calculations as well as the reactivity toward diphenyl acetylene suggest a notable biradical character in PPI. Reaction with [Cr(CO)3 (MeCN)3 ] affords the complex [Cr(CO)3 (η5 -PPI)] (5). This complex was employed to explore the ligand properties of PPI, which demonstrates considerable potential through the combination of strong metal-ligand interactions and the possibility of a pronounced indenyl effect.

RESUMO

We review the known chemistry of the cyaphide ion, (C≡P)- . This remarkable diatomic anion has been the subject of study since the late nineteenth century, however its isolation and characterization eluded chemists for almost a hundred years. In this mini-review, we explore the pioneering synthetic experiments that first allowed for its isolation, as well as more recent developments demonstrating that cyaphide transfer is viable in well-established salt-metathesis protocols. The physical properties of the cyaphide ion are also explored in depth, allowing us to compare and contrast the chemistry of this ion with that of its lighter congener cyanide (an archetypal strong field ligand and important organic functional group). Recent studies show that the cyaphide ion has the potential to be used as a versatile chemical regent for the synthesis of novel molecules and materials, hinting at many interesting future avenues of investigation.

RESUMO

Reaction of the imidazolium-stabilized diphosphete-diide IDP with trityl phosphaalkyne affords a mixture which contains the molecules 1 a and 1 b with a central C3 P3 core, which formally carries a two-fold negative charge. In order to avoid the formation of an antiaromatic 8π electron system within a conjugated dianionic six-membered [C3 P3 ]2- ring, 1 a adopts a bicyclic [3.1.0] and 1 b a tricyclic [2.2.0.0] structure which are in a dynamic equilibrium. 1 a, b can be reversibly oxidized to a triphosphinine dication [5]2+ with a central flat aromatic six-membered C3 P3 ring. This two-electron redox reaction occurs in two single-electron transfer steps via the 7π-radical cation [4]⋅+ , which could also be isolated and fully characterized. The profound reversible structural change observed for the two-electron redox couple [5]2+ /1 a, b is in sharp contrast to the C6 H6 /[C6 H6 ]2- couple, which undergoes only a modest structural deformation.

RESUMO

Reaction of the imidazolium-substituted iphosphate-diide, (Ipr)2 C2 P2 (IDP), with GeCl2 ⋅ dioxane and KBArF24 [(BarF24 )- =tetrakis[(3,5-trifluoromethyl)phenyl]borate)] afforded the dicationic spherical-aromatic nido-cluster [Ge(η4 -IDP)]2+ ([1]2+ ) (Ipr=1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazolium-2-ylidene). This complex is a rare heavy analogue of the elusive pyramidane [C(η4 -C4 H4 )]. [1]2+ undergoes two reversible one-electron reductions, which yield the radical cation [2]⋅+ and the neutral GeII species 3. Both [2]⋅+ and 3 rearrange in solution forming the 2D aromatic and planar imidazolium-substituted digermolide [4]2+ and germole-diide 5, respectively. Both planar species can be oxidized back to [1]2+ using AgSbF6 . These redox-isomerizations correspond to the fundamental transformation of a 3D aromatic cluster into a 2D aromatic ring compound upon reduction and vice versa. The mechanism of these reactions was elucidated using DFT calculations and cyclic voltammetry experiments.

RESUMO

We report here a mechanistic, DFT and catalytic study on a series of Mn(I) complexes 1, 2(a-d), 3, 4. The studies apprehended the requirements for Mn(I) complexes to be active in both asymmetric direct (AH) and transfer hydrogenations (ATH). The investigations disclosed 6 vital factors accelerating the formation of a resting species, which plays a significant role in lowering the activities of the Mn(I) complex 1 in ATH and AH, respectively. In addition, we also report here a base free Mn(I) catalyzed ATH of aryl alkyl ketones with high enantioselectivity (up to 98 % ee) and improved activity. More significantly, a novel and simple single-step process for recycling the resting species from the catalytic leftover has been discovered. Notably, the studies provide evidence for the existence of two different temperature dependent mechanisms for AH and ATH, in contrast to previous studies on related systems.

RESUMO

Reaction of the 6π-electron aromatic four-membered heterocycle (IPr)2 C2 P2 (1) (IPr=1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-1,3-dihydro-2H-imidazol-2-ylidene) with [Fe2 CO9 ] gives the neutral iron tricarbonyl complex [Fe(CO)3 -η3 -{(IPr)2 C2 P2 }] (2). Oxidation with two equivalents of the ferrocenium salt, [Fe(Cp)2 ](BArF24 ), affords the dicationic tricarbonyl complex [Fe(CO)3 -η4 -{(IPr)2 C2 P2 }](BArF24 )2 (4). The one-electron oxidation proceeds under concomitant loss of one CO ligand to give the paramagnetic dicarbonyl radical cation complex [Fe(CO)2 -η4 -{(IPr)2 C2 P2 }](BArF24 ) (5). Reduction of 5 allows the preparation of the neutral dicarbonyl complex [Fe(CO)2 -η4 -{(IPr)2 C2 P2 }] (6). An analysis by various spectroscopic techniques (57 Fe Mössbauer, EPR) combined with DFT calculations gives insight into differences of the electronic structure within the members of this unique series of iron carbonyl complexes, which can be either described as electron precise or Wade-Mingos clusters.

RESUMO

Oxidative addition of the P-P single bond of an ortho-carborane-derived 1,2-diphosphetane (1,2-C2(PMes)2B10H10) (Mes = 2,4,6-Me3C6H2) to cobalt(-i) and nickel(0) sources affords the first heteroleptic complexes of a carborane-bridged bis(phosphanido) ligand. The complexes also incorporate labile ligands suitable for further functionalisation. Thus, the cobalt(i) complex [K([18]crown-6)][Co{1,2-(PMes)2C2B10H10}(cod)] (cod = 1,5-cyclooctadiene) bearing a labile cyclooctadiene ligand undergoes facile ligand exchange reactions with isonitriles and tert-butyl phosphaalkyne with retention of the bis(phosphanido) ligand. However, in the reaction with one equivalent of P4, the electron-rich bis(phosphanido) moiety abstracts a single phosphorus atom with formation of a new P3 chain, while the remaining three P atoms derived from P4 form an η3-coordinating cyclo-P3 ligand. In contrast, when the same reaction is performed with two equivalents of the cobalt(i) complex, a dinuclear product is formed which features an unusual P4 chain in its molecular structure.

RESUMO

Reactions of di-tert-butyldiphosphatetrahedrane (1) with cycloocta-1,5-diene- or anthracene-stabilised metalate anions of iron and cobalt consistently afford complexes of the rarely encountered 1,2-diphosphacyclobutadiene ligand, which have previously been very challenging synthetic targets. The subsequent reactivity of 1,2-diphosphacyclobutadiene cobaltates toward various electrophiles has also been investigated and is compared to reactions of related 1,3-diphosphacyclobutadiene complexes. The results highlight the distinct reactivity of such isomeric species, showing that the 1,2-isomers can act as precursors for previously unknown triphospholium ligands. The electronic structures of the new complexes were investigated by several methods, including NMR, EPR and Mößbauer spectroscopies as well as quantum chemical calculations.

RESUMO

We present a computational study on tetrapnictide dianions Pn 4 2- (Pn = P, As, Sb, Bi), using density functional theory (DFT), coupled-cluster [DLPNO-CCSD(T)] and complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) methods. Environmental effects such as solvation and coordination of counterions are included. The calculations reveal that out of three isomers (square-planar, butterfly and capped-triangle), the square planar isomers are generally the most stable. The counterion (Li+ and Mg2+) used in the calculations have a substantial effect on the relative stabilities. The square planar isomers show considerable biradical character. Calculated reactions toward alkenes indicate that this unusual electronic structure has significant implications on the reactivity of the Pn 4 2- dianions.

RESUMO

Changing the aromatic core of C3-symmetric tris(ferrocenyl)arene-based tris-phosphanes has profound effects on their coordination behaviour towards gold(i). Depending on the arene (s-triazine, benzene, or trifluorobenzene), four different coordination modes can be distinguished and their preference has been rationalised using computational methods. The corresponding 1 : 1 ligand-to-metal complexes, studied by variable-temperature NMR spectroscopy, revealed fluctional behaviour in solution. Given the presence of up to three or six ferrocenylene spacers per complex, their electrochemistry was investigated. The redox-responsive nature of the complexes can be advantageously exploited in the catalytic ring-closing isomerisation of N-(2-propyn-1-yl)benzamide, where the benzene-based 2 : 3 ligand-to-metal complex has been shown to display multiple activity states depending on the degree of (reversible) oxidation in a preliminary trial.

RESUMO

The synthesis of rare anionic heteroleptic and homoleptic α-diimine iron complexes is described. Heteroleptic BIAN (bis(aryl)iminoacenaphthene) complexes 1-[K([18]c-6)(thf)0.5] and 2-[K([18]c-6)(thf)2] were synthesized by reduction of the [(BIAN)FeBr2] precursor complex using stoichiometric amounts of potassium graphite in the presence of the corresponding olefin. The electronic structure of these paramagnetic species was investigated by numerous spectroscopic analyses (NMR, EPR, 57Fe Mössbauer, UV-vis), magnetic measurements (Evans NMR method, SQUID), and theoretical techniques (DFT, CASSCF). Whereas anion 1 is a low-spin complex, anion 2 consists of an intermediate-spin Fe(III) center. Both complexes are efficient precatalysts for the hydroboration of carbonyl compounds under mild reaction conditions. The reaction of bis(anthracene) ferrate(1-) gave the homoleptic BIAN complex 3-[K([18]c-6)(thf)], which is less catalytically active. The electronic structure was elucidated with the same techniques as described for complexes 1-[K([18]c-6)(thf)0.5] and 2-[K([18]c-6)(thf)2] and revealed an Fe(II) species in a quartet ground state.

RESUMO

The reaction of zerovalent nickel compounds with white phosphorus (P4 ) is a barely explored route to binary nickel phosphide clusters. Here, we show that coordinatively and electronically unsaturated N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) nickel(0) complexes afford unusual cluster compounds with P1 , P3 , P5 and P8 units. Using [Ni(IMes)2 ] [IMes=1,3-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)imidazolin-2-ylidene], electron-deficient Ni3 P4 and Ni3 P6 clusters have been isolated, which can be described as superhypercloso and hypercloso clusters according to the Wade-Mingos rules. Use of the bulkier NHC complexes [Ni(IPr)2 ] or [(IPr)Ni(η6 -toluene)] [IPr=1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazolin-2-ylidene] affords a closo-Ni3 P8 cluster. Inverse-sandwich complexes [(NHC)2 Ni2 P5 ] (NHC=IMes, IPr) with an aromatic cyclo-P5 - ligand were identified as additional products.

RESUMO

Salt metathesis of 1-methyl-2,4,6-triphenylphosphacyclohexadienyl lithium and chlorobis(pentafluorophenyl)borane affords a 1-phospha-7-bora-norbornadiene derivative 2. The C≡N triple bonds of nitriles insert into the P-B bond of 2 with concomitant C-B bond cleavage, whereas the C≡C bonds of phenylacetylenes react with 2 to form λ4 -phosphabarrelenes. Even though 2 must formally be regarded as a classical Lewis adduct, the C≡N and C≡C activation processes observed (and the mild conditions under which they occur) are reminiscent of the reactivity of frustrated Lewis pairs. Indeed, NMR and computational studies give insight into the mechanism of the reactions and reveal the labile nature of the phosphorus-boron bond in 2, which is also suggested by detailed NMR spectroscopic studies on this compound. Nitrile insertion is thus preceded by ring opening of the bicycle of 2 through P-B bond splitting with a low energy barrier. By contrast, the reaction with alkynes involves formation of a reactive zwitterionic methylphosphininium borate intermediate, which readily undergoes alkyne 1,4-addition.

RESUMO

2,4,6-Tris(1-diphenylphosphanyl-1'-ferrocenylene)-1,3,5-triazine (1) coordinates all three coinage metal(I) ions in a 1:1 tridentate coordination mode. The C3 -symmetric coordination in both solid state and solution is stabilised by an uncommon cation-π interaction between the triazine core and the metal cation. Intramolecular dynamic behaviour was observed by variable-temperature NMR spectroscopy. The borane adduct of 1, 1BH3 , displays four accessible oxidation states, suggesting complexes of 1 to be intriguing candidates for redox-switchable catalysis. Complexes 1Cu, 1Ag, and 1Au display a more complicated electrochemical behaviour, and the electrochemical mechanism was studied by temperature-resolved UV/Vis spectroelectrochemistry and chemical oxidation.
