(AU)

Thirty badminton players participated (M= 23.7 years, SD = 7.52), divided by performance level: high skill level (women=5, men=10) and low skill level (women=4, men=11). Independent variable: competition simulation with lower and higher demand. Dependent variable: level of psychophysiological and subjective activation and performance. There were no significant differences in electromyography and skin conductance for the different conditions, but there were significant differences in peripheral temperature and subjective arousal. The level of psychophysiological activation had an increase due to the actions, but it was not significant. In addition, that the simulation imagining match situations, it is possible that it was not enough to generate significant differences due to the conditions. (AU)

RESUMO

Background Extreme maternal morbidity is defined as "events that potentially threaten the life of a pregnant woman during pregnancy, childbirth or the puerperium, but that due to a medical intervention the patient does not die", and this is an indicator of health quality at the hospital and demographic level. Objective The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of extreme maternal morbidity in the Women´s Hospital of Aguascalientes, Mexico. Material and methods A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted under the criteria of the World Health Organization and the Latin American Federation of Obstetrics and Gynecology Societies for the definition of extreme maternal morbidity to determine the prevalence of near miss morbidity, between January 1 and December 31, 2016. Results We found 165 cases of extreme maternal morbidity; no maternal death was registered during the study year. The extreme maternal morbidity rate was 0.016 and 16.69 per 1000 live births; the ratio of extreme maternal morbidity cases / obstetric admissions was 11.07. The prevalence of extreme maternal morbidity was 1.6%. The main causes of extreme maternal morbidity were hypertensive disorders (57%), obstetric hemorrhage (29%), sepsis (1%) and other (13%). Conclusion Extreme maternal morbidity in our institution had a similar prevalence to that reported in other countries and was mainly caused by hypertensive disorders.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to assess type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) risk factors in grandparent caregivers living in a rural environment. METHODS: Clinical measures (hemoglobin A1c [HbA1c], blood pressure, and lipids) and self-reported data on social environment factors were attained. Data were analyzed via Pearson's correlation and regression models. RESULTS: By clinical definition of diabetes (HbA1c ≥ 6.5%), 21% were prediabetic and 28% had undiagnosed T2DM. There was an association between the number of individuals in the home and triglycerides (r = -.25), high-density lipoproteins (HDL; r = .43), and body mass index (BMI; r = .39). Guardianship status had a significant association with BMI (r = -.38). There was a significant association between low-density lipoprotein (LDL; r = -.32) and access to community shared resources. In the adjusted linear model, the number of grandchildren in the home had a significant relationship with HDL (ß = .012, p = .021) whereas the number of individuals living in the home had a statistically significant relationship with HDL (ß = .026, p < .000) and BMI (ß = .046, p = .02). In addition, 15% of participants reported being food insecure. DISCUSSION: Efforts are needed to identify and screen at-risk populations living in geographically isolated areas. Considerations should be given to leveraging existing community resources for grandparent caregivers via schools, health systems, and government agencies to optimize health and well-being.

RESUMO

Objectives: In this study, we pilot-tested #CRCFree, a Facebook-based intervention aimed at reducing colorectal cancer (CRC) risk in rural Appalachian adults at risk for CRC. Methods: Participants were 56 rural Appalachian adults aged > 50 years. Daily #CRCFree Facebook posts addressed diet, physical activity, and CRC screening. Participants' sociodemographics, diet, body mass index, physical activity, and CRC screening status were measured pre- and post-intervention. The Healthy Eating Index (HEI) and the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) assessed dietary patterns. Facebook engagement was measured throughout the intervention. A post-intervention focus group evaluated intervention acceptability. Results: Participants were Caucasian, aged 58 ± 6 years, and predominantly female (66%). Post-intervention, HEI scores increased (49.9 ± 9.9 vs 58.6 ± 12.1, p = <.001), and DII scores decreased from baseline (2.8 ± 1.1 vs 1.6 ± 1.7, p = .002). There was no change in physical activity, BMI, or CRC screening status. Focus group participants found the intervention to be educational and motivating. Conclusions: These results provide preliminary evidence to support using Facebook to address CRC risk in this population. Participants were responsive to this intervention, and Facebook is a novel and accessible modality for health promotion.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Cardiorespiratory arrest during pregnancy is a rare event that occurs in 1 in 12,500 to 30,000 pregnancies, with a survival rate of 17-59%. CLINICAL CASE: We report the case of a 23-year-old female patient, late-term pregnancy and labor. During labor conduction and after spinal analgesia, she presented cardiorespiratory arrest. After the start of basic resuscitation maneuvers, monitoring, and confirmed asystole, advanced maneuvers were started, culminating at 4 minutes with resuscitation hysterotomy and a subsequent spontaneous return of circulation. The patient required immediate post-arrest cares with follow-up and management in the intensive obstetric care unit for one month, after which the patient was discharged with minimal compromise of her superior mental functions; after 3 months of out clinic follow-up, the patient was healthy and her superior functions deemed to have been fully restored. CONCLUSIONS: Due to the ethical implications and characteristics of the pathology, there are no experimental models to establish measures during cardiopulmonary resuscitation in pregnancy, they are developed based on the review of clinical cases and the study of cardiovascular physiology during pregnancy. In this case report, we conclude that adhering to the established recommendations were associated with a good outcome and prognosis for both mother and child.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Latino communities are disproportionately affected by type 2 diabetes and experience disparities in access to diabetes prevention programs. The purpose of this study was to test the preliminary efficacy of a culturally grounded, diabetes prevention program for high-risk Latino families delivered through an integrated research-practice partnership. STUDY DESIGN: The integrated research-practice partnership was established in a predominantly Latino community and consisted of a Federally Qualified Health Center, a YMCA, an accredited diabetes education program, and an academic research center. Data were collected and analyzed from 2015 to 2018. SETTING/PARTICIPANTS: Latino families consisting of a parent with an obese child between age 8 and 12 years. INTERVENTION: The 12-week lifestyle intervention included nutrition education and behavioral skills training (60 minutes, once/week) and physical activity classes (60 minutes, three times/week) delivered at a YMCA. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Outcomes included measures of adiposity (BMI, waist circumference, and body fat); HbA1c; and weight-specific quality of life. RESULTS: Over the course of the 2-year project period, 58 families (parents n=59, children n=68) were enrolled with 36% of parents and 29% of children meeting the criteria for prediabetes at baseline. Feasibility and acceptability were high, with 83% of enrolled families completing the program, 91% of the intervention sessions attended, and 100% of families stating they would recommend the program. The intervention led to significant decreases in percentage body fat among parents (46.4% [SD=10.8] to 43.5% [SD=10.5], p=0.001) as well as children (43.1% [SD=8.0] to 41.8% [SD=7.2], p=0.03). Additionally, HbA1c was significantly reduced in parents (5.6% [SD=0.4] to 5.5% [SD=0.3], p=0.03), and remained stable in children (5.5% [SD=0.3] vs 5.5% [SD=0.3], p>0.05). Significant improvements in quality of life were reported in parents (64.6 [SD=15.8] to 71.0 [SD=13.7], p=0.001) and children (69.7 [SD=15.8] to 72.6 [SD=13.7], p=0.05). CONCLUSIONS: These findings support the preliminary efficacy of an integrated research-practice partnership to meet the diabetes prevention needs of high-risk Latino families within a vulnerable community.

RESUMO

Untreated depression remains one of the largest public health concerns. However, barriers such as unavailability of mental health providers and high cost of services limit the number of people able to benefit from traditional treatments. Though unsupported Internet interventions have proven effective at bypassing many of these barriers given their reach and scalability, attrition from interventions has been an ongoing concern. Microinterventions, or ultra-brief online tools meant to produce a rapid improvement in mood, may offer a way to provide the benefits of unsupported Internet interventions quickly, before attrition might occur. This study examined the immediate and lasting effects of three microinterventions (Breathing Exercises, Thought Records, and a Pleasant Activities Selector) on mood and distress. Participants (N=122) were randomized into three groups, each group completing two of the three microinterventions. Participants were asked to rate their mood and level of distress before and after completing the microintervention. Depression and perceived stress were assessed at baseline and at four weekly follow-ups. Although lasting effects were not found, a significant within-group reduction in distress and improvement in mood were observed immediately following the completion of the microintervention. This study demonstrates the potential benefits of microinterventions to individuals for their immediate needs vis-à-vis mood and distress.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Workforce and leadership development is imperative for the advancement of public health along the U.S./Mexico border. The Leaders across borders (LaB) program aims to train the public health and health-care workforce of the border region. The LaB is a 6-month intensive leadership development program, which offers training in various areas of public health. Program curriculum topics include: leadership, border health epidemiology, health diplomacy, border public policies, and conflict resolution. METHODS: This article describes the LaB program evaluation outcomes across four LaB cohort graduates between 2010 and 2014. LaB graduates received an invitation to participate via email in an online questionnaire. Eighty-five percent (n = 34) of evaluation participants indicated an improvement in the level of binationality since participating in the LaB program. Identified themes in the evaluation results included increased binational collaborations and partnerships across multidisciplinary organizations that work towards improving the health status of border communities. Approximately 93% (n = 37) of the LaB samples were interested in participating in future binational projects while 80% (n = 32) indicated interest in the proposal of other binational initiatives. Participants expressed feelings of gratitude from employers who supported their participation and successful completion of LaB. DISCUSSION: Programs such as LaB are important in providing professional development and education to a health-care workforce along the U.S./Mexico border that is dedicated to positively impacting the health outcomes of vulnerable populations residing in this region.

The aim of this work is to describe an intervention which sought to modify the behavior of a goalkeeper in relation to the errors he committed, after receiving a goal, he became disheartened, and could not stop concentrating on the error committed. This attention paid to the error committed delayed a return to having adequate behavior in order to fulfil his function in the game. This intervention was carried out through biofeedback, techniques of emotional control and techniques to manage attention and concentration. Given that the intervention was carried out on an eighteen year old goalkeeper, at the request of the trainer, a study of a unique case was used. In accordance with the descriptive results, an improvement in attention and concentration was found as there was a proximity to 5 μv on beta waves and there was an increase in direct punctuation of concentration in the data of the Toulouse-Piéron test. An improvement in emotional control was also found through biofeedback, as there was an increase in the stimulating response to skin. Finally, a change in the goalkeeper’s conduct after the errors was registered, as there was a decrease in the discouraging conducts and an increase in the adequate conducts (AU)

Sport Psychology is a relatively young area, which studies what are the psychological peculiarities of the sport and the athlete. When we speak of Sport Psychology it may seem a recent issue marriage between psychology -of itself recently- and sport, provided that the application of psychology in sport is a matter of a few years ago and, by no means a issue that can be addressed from a historical perspective. In our historical review we will establish the following periods: (1) beginning, from 1879 to1919, (2) interwar period of 1920-1945, (3) before the First World Congress, from 1946 to1964 (4) consolidation, from 1965 to 1985 and (5) official recognition, 1986 until today. We conclude with an overview of the history of Sport Psychology in Spain

RESUMO

Internet interventions provide an option for those who either cannot or choose not to engage with traditional treatments. Most research on internet interventions involves guided or supported interventions. However, unsupported interventions offer considerably more scalability and cost-effectiveness, which makes them attractive for large-scale implementation. In this study, 309 participants recruited via Google AdWords entered an unsupported cognitive-behavioral internet intervention for depressive symptoms. To maximize the ecological validity of the study, participants received no incentives or live contact with study personnel. Furthermore, the study was open to individuals at any level of depressive symptoms, and all participants received the active intervention. The main outcome measures were depressive symptom level and self-efficacy in managing depressive symptoms. At follow-up, depression scores were significantly lower than baseline scores at each follow-up point (1, 2, 4, and 7 months), with pre-post effect sizes ranging from medium to large. Follow-up depression self-efficacy scores were significantly higher than baseline scores at each follow-up point, with pre-post effect sizes in the medium range. The results remained significant when analyzing only participants with depression scores indicative of a presence of a major depressive episode; results likewise remained significant when employing the conservative last observation carried forward convention, even in the presence of high attrition observed in this study. The results illustrate the potential of unsupported internet intervention to address the health needs of the global community.

RESUMO

Balance is an essential aspect of daily living and sport appearance. The deterioration of this capacity may cause disorder or injury from falls. The objective of this intervention is to determine the influence of proprioceptive exercise program with external auditory feedback on balance improvement. It involved eight women (M = 38 years, SD = 11.45) who performed constant exercise, divided into two groups. Group 1 program and auditory feedback, group 2 single program. A team of auditory feedback that was used for group 1 was created. Results in Group 1 had a significant improvement in measured equilibrium with the following tests: Functional Reach (p = .036), Get Up and Go (p = .021) and Dynamic Bar test (p = .044). According to the results, the two groups displayed an improvement in the balance by the proprioceptive program, but it was group 1, with auditory feedback, which shown the greatest improvement. The proprioceptive program along with auditory feedback can improve balance significant (AU)

BACKGROUND: In populations where mental health resources are scarce or unavailable, or where stigma prevents help-seeking, the Internet may be a way to identify and reach at-risk persons using self-report validated screening tools as well as to characterize individuals seeking health information online. AIMS: We examined the feasibility of delivering an Internet-based Chinese-language depression and suicide screener and described its users. METHOD: An Internet-based depression and suicide screener was created and advertised primarily through Google AdWords. Participants completed a suicide and depression screening measure and received individualized feedback, which, if necessary, included the suggestion to seek additional mental health resources. RESULTS: In 7 months, 11,631 individuals visited the site; 4,709 provided valid information. Nearly half reported a current major depressive episode (MDE) and 18.3% a recent suicide attempt; however, over 75% reported never having sought help, including 77.7% of those with MDEs and 75.9% of those reporting a suicide attempt. As participants found the site by searching for depression information online, results may not generalize to the entire Chinese-speaking population. CONCLUSION: Online screening can feasibly identify and reach many at-risk Chinese-speaking persons. It may provide resources to those with limited access to services or to those reluctant to seek such services.

RESUMO

Internet-based mental health resources often suffer from low engagement and retention. An increased understanding of engagement and attrition is needed to realize the potential of such resources. In this study, 45,142 individuals were screened for depression by an automated online screener, with 2,539 enrolling in a year-long monthly rescreening study; they received a single monthly reminder email to rescreen their mood. We found that, even with such a minimal cohort maintenance strategy, a third of the participants completed 1 or more follow-ups, and 22% completed 2 or more follow-ups. Furthermore, completion of earlier follow-ups was highly predictive of future completions. We also found a number of participant characteristics (e.g., current depression status, previous depression treatment seeking, education level) predicted follow-up rates, singly or in interactions.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Google AdWords, the placement of sponsored links in Google search results, is a potent method of recruitment to Internet-based health studies and interventions. However, the performance of Google AdWords varies considerably depending on the language and the location of the target audience. OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to describe differences in AdWords performance when recruiting participants to the same study conducted in four languages and to determine whether AdWords campaigns can be optimized in order to increase recruitment while decreasing costs. METHODS: Google AdWords were used to recruit participants to the Mood Screener, a multilingual online depression screening tool available in English, Russian, Spanish, and Chinese. Two distinct recruitment periods are described: (1) "Unmanaged", a 6-month period in which ads were allowed to run using only the AdWords tool itself, with no human intervention, and (2) "Managed", a separate 7-week period during which we systematically sought to optimize our recruitment campaigns. RESULTS: During 6 months of unmanaged recruitment, our ads were shown over 1.3 million times, resulting in over 60,000 site visits. The average click-through rate (ratio of ads clicked to ads displayed) varied from 1.86% for Chinese ads to 8.48% for Russian ads, as did the average cost-per-click (from US $0.20 for Chinese ads to US $0.50 for English ads). Although Chinese speakers' click-through rate was lowest, their rate of consenting to participate was the highest, at 3.62%, with English speakers exhibiting the lowest consent rate (0.97%). The conversion cost (cost to recruit a consenting participant) varied from US $10.80 for Russian speakers to US $51.88 for English speakers. During the 7 weeks of "managed" recruitment, we attempted to improve AdWords' performance in regards to the consent rate and cost by systematically deleting underperforming ads and adjusting keywords. We were able to increase the number of people who consent after coming to the site by 91.8% while also decreasing per-consent cost by 23.3%. CONCLUSIONS: Our results illustrate the need to linguistically and culturally adapt Google AdWords campaigns and to manage them carefully to ensure the most cost-effective results.

The Tapping Test is a common neurological means of evaluating Cuba’s national teams. Our objective was to assess self-control of motor abilities and the athletes’ psychophysiological response by comparing two versions of the tapping test: mode 1 (normal pencil and paper) and mode 2 (technical action with the épée). The participants were made up of 12 athletes from the Cuban National Fencing Team (Mage = 22.19 years, SD = 3.50 years). We used wireless psychophysiological recording equipment (Biofeedback 2000). The results show self-control of motor abilities, mode 1 being significant F(1,10) = 44.29, p < .001 as the number of touches or hits was consistent with the execution rate. Mode 2 showed a motility or significant acceleration in the different phases of the test F(1.586, 15.85) = 8146, p = .006, plus a higher level of psychophysiological activation. This high-ranking group of fencers demonstrated self-control of their motor abilities despite increased activation, controlling their movements to match the requested pace (mode 1) (AU)

There was a predominance of cognitive interventions and cognitive-behavioral among the top priority. In the second option again cognitive strategies and modeling are preferred by psychologists, supported by the use of imagination and psychophysical -in that order- usually as a complement of the first. In third priority again chosen the cognitive, this time supported by the use of imagination and cognitive-behavioral. In all cases, they found significantly higher rates of internal consistency in the distribution of preferences away from gambling as a criterion of choice (AU)

Objectives: To conduct an occupational health study of teaching staff at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana-Xochimilco. The study considers conditions relating to use of leisure time and house-hold work which can be associated both positively and negatively with well-being and health. Materials and methods: Observational, cross-sectional, analytical study of an academic population. A survey was applied to a single randomly selected academic population. The participants were 199 university teaching staff. The survey asked about work demands, household activities and the use of leisure time, and adverse health effects. Results: More household tasks and work demands, and more adverse health effects, were found in women. Prevalence rates for statistically associated adverse health effects in women and men respectively were: musculoskeletal disorders 51 vs 29; stress 50 vs 35; dysphonia 48 vs 31; and sleep disorders 41 vs 25. Positive effects were identified by means of cluster analysis by the close proximity of clusters showing sustained activities carried out during leisure time and the absence of adverse health effects. Conclusions: Better organization of work activities to enable more active usage of leisure time is recommended, with an emphasis on physical activity, which is the main protective measure against harm to physical and mental health.
