RESUMO

We present a novel approach for measuring the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) stability of a laser source by employing the process of high harmonic generation (HHG) in solids. HHG in solids driven by few-cycle pulses is very sensitive to the waveform of the driving pulse, therefore enabling to track the shot-to-shot CEP fluctuations of a laser source. This strategy is particularly practical for pulses at long central wavelength up to the mid-infrared spectral range where usual techniques used in the visible or near-infrared regions are challenging to transpose. We experimentally demonstrate this novel tool by measuring the CEP fluctuations of a mid-infrared laser source centered at 9.5~µm.

RESUMO

We present a novel, to the best of our knowledge, approach for scaling the peak power of mid-infrared laser pulses with few-cycle duration and carrier-to-envelope phase stabilization. Using frequency domain optical parametric amplification (FOPA), selective amplification is performed on two spectral slices of broadband pulses centered at 1.8 µm wavelength. In addition to amplification, the Fourier plane is used for specific pulse shaping to control both the relative polarization and the phase/delay between the two spectral slices of the input pulses. At the output of the FOPA, intrapulse difference frequency generation provides carrier-envelope phase stabilized two-cycle pulses centered at 9.5 µm wavelength with 25.5 µJ pulse energy. The control of the carrier-envelope phase is demonstrated through the dependence of high-harmonic generation in solids. This architecture is perfectly adapted to be scaled in the future to high average and high peak powers using picosecond ytterbium laser technologies.

RESUMO

In this paper, we introduce a pulse characterization technique that is free of phase-matching constraints, exploiting transient absorption in solids as an ultrafast optical switch. Based on a pump-probe setup, this technique uses pump pulses of sufficient intensity to induce the switch, while the pulses to characterize are probing the transmissivity drop of the photoexcited material. This enables the characterization of low-intensity ultra-broadband pulses at the detection limit of the spectrometer and within the transparency range of the solid. For example, by using zinc selenide (ZnSe), pulses with wavelengths from 0.5 to 20 µm can be characterized, denoting five octaves of spectral range. Using ptychography, we retrieve the temporal profiles of both the probe pulse and the switch. To demonstrate this approach, we measure ultrashort pulses from a titanium-sapphire (Ti-Sa) amplifier, which are compressed using a hollow core fiber setup, as well as infrared to mid-infrared pulses generated from an optical parametric amplifier (OPA). The characterized pulses are centered at wavelengths of 0.77, 1.53, 1.75, 4, and 10 µm, down to sub-two optical cycles duration, exceeding an octave of bandwidth, and with energy as low as a few nanojoules.

RESUMO

Electrodynamical processes induced in complex systems like semiconductors by strong electromagnetic fields have traditionally been described using semiclassical approaches. Although these approaches allowed the investigation of ultrafast dynamics in solids culminating in multipetahertz electronics, they do not provide any access to the quantum-optical nature of the interaction, as they treat the driving field classically and unaffected by the interaction. Here, using a full quantum-optical approach, we demonstrate that the subcycle electronic response in a strongly driven semiconductor crystal is imprinted in the quantum state of the driving field resulting in nonclassical light states carrying the information of the interaction. This vital step towards strong-field ultrafast quantum electrodynamics unravels information inaccessible by conventional approaches and leads to the development of a new class of nonclassical light sources.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Childhood obesity is a complex and multifaceted problem involving interactions among child, family and community environment. AIM: The purpose of this study was to examine the contributing factors to early childhood obesity within a multilevel context, including child and family, childcare setting and community. METHODS: A cross-sectional, quantitative research design was employed. A total of 129 preschoolers and their parents in northwest Florida participated in this study. Child height and weight were measured, and body mass index (BMI) was calculated. Parents and directors of preschools completed survey questionnaires to assess child/family, childcare setting and community factors, respectively. Hierarchical multiple regression was used to evaluate the association of each level of factors with child BMI z-score. RESULTS: Twenty-one per cent of children were overweight or obese (≥85th BMI percentile). In hierarchical multiple regression, household income, parent beliefs, attitudes and practices for child feeding, family obesogenic environment, child routines (screen time on weekends, sleep hours, bedtime) and physical activity environment were significantly related to child BMI z-score. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study provide a broader understanding of factors that influence child BMI z-score. Shaping a non-obesogenic environment by establishing healthy routines for children in the home, childcare setting and community is essential in childhood obesity prevention. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE AND HEALTH POLICY: Paediatric nurses should routinely assess accurate parental perception of child weight, feeding style and child routines in well-child care visits. Healthcare professionals and health policymakers should enact policies that build a healthy environment for preschoolers in their childcare setting and community.

RESUMO

We address the long-standing problem of anomalous growth observed in the terahertz (THz) energy yield from air plasmas created by two-color laser pulses, as the fundamental wavelength λ0 is increased. Using two distinct optical parametric amplifiers (OPAs), we report THz energies scaling like λ0α with large exponents 5.6≤α≤14.3, which departs from the growth in λ02 expected from photocurrent theory. By means of comprehensive 3D simulations, we demonstrate that the changes in the laser beam size, pulse duration, and phase-matching conditions in the second-harmonic generation process when tuning the OPA's carrier wavelength can lead to these high scaling powers. The value of the phase angle between the two colors reached at the exit of the doubling crystal turns out to be crucial and even explains non-monotonic behaviors in the measurements.

RESUMO

We present the MIGA experiment, an underground long baseline atom interferometer to study gravity at large scale. The hybrid atom-laser antenna will use several atom interferometers simultaneously interrogated by the resonant mode of an optical cavity. The instrument will be a demonstrator for gravitational wave detection in a frequency band (100 mHz-1 Hz) not explored by classical ground and space-based observatories, and interesting for potential astrophysical sources. In the initial instrument configuration, standard atom interferometry techniques will be adopted, which will bring to a peak strain sensitivity of [Formula: see text] at 2 Hz. This demonstrator will enable to study the techniques to push further the sensitivity for the future development of gravitational wave detectors based on large scale atom interferometers. The experiment will be realized at the underground facility of the Laboratoire Souterrain à Bas Bruit (LSBB) in Rustrel-France, an exceptional site located away from major anthropogenic disturbances and showing very low background noise. In the following, we present the measurement principle of an in-cavity atom interferometer, derive the method for Gravitational Wave signal extraction from the antenna and determine the expected strain sensitivity. We then detail the functioning of the different systems of the antenna and describe the properties of the installation site.

RESUMO

Interventional radiology plays a significant role in the treatment of bone metastases by various techniques, percutaneous or endovascular. Vertebroplasty is the most well-studied technique for stabilisation of spine metastases as it induces satisfactory stabilisation of the vertebra and offers clear improvement of the quality of life. Due to the success of this technique cementoplasty of other bones, mainly pelvic girdle, has been largely developed. The development of reinforced cementoplasty allows treatment of pre-fractural osteolysis of some long bones. The heat due to the polymerisation of the cement induces carcinolytic effect but this effect is not as important as that which results from radiofrequency destruction. This last technique appears currently as the most important development to definitively destroy bone metastases and is progressively replacing percutaneous alcoholic destruction of such lesions. Angiographic techniques, such as endovascular embolisation, can also be very useful to reduce the risk of surgical treatment of hyper vascular metastases. Chemoembolisation is currently developed to associate pain relief induced by Endovascular embolisation and the carcinolytic effect obtained by local endovascular chemotherapy. All these techniques should develop largely during the next years.

RESUMO

We report and discuss high-flux generation of circularly polarized γ-rays by means of Compton scattering. The γ-ray beam results from the collision of an external-cavity-enhanced infrared laser beam and a low emittance relativistic electron beam. By operating a non-planar bow-tie high-finesse optical Fabry-Perot cavity coupled to a storage ring, we have recorded a flux of up to (3.5 ± 0.3) × 108 photons per second with a mean measured energy of 24 MeV. The γ-ray flux has been sustained for several hours. In particular, we were able to measure a record value of up to 400 γ-rays per collision in a full bandwidth. Moreover, the impact of Compton scattering on the electron beam dynamics could be observed resulting in a reduction of the electron beam lifetime correlated to the laser power stored in the Fabry-Perot cavity. We demonstrate that the electron beam lifetime provides an independent and consistent determination of the γ-ray flux. Furthermore, a reduction of the γ-ray flux due to intrabeam scattering has clearly been identified. These results, obtained on an accelerator test facility, warrant potential scaling and revealed both expected and yet unobserved effects. They set the baseline for further scaling of the future Compton sources under development around the world.

RESUMO

Carrier-envelope phase (CEP) drift of a pulse train of 2 ps pulses has been measured by a multiple beam interferometer. The round trip time of the interferometer is slightly mistuned from the pulse sequence, leading to spectral interference fringes. We extract the pulse-to-pulse CEP drift from the position of the spectral interference pattern. The length of the interferometer has been actively stabilized to ±10 nm, which sets the ultimate limit on the accuracy of the measurement to 78 mrad, while the CEP-drift (rms) noise of the measurement was 127 mrad (at 800 nm).

RESUMO

In this study, we report on a pure Kerr-lens mode-locked Yb:CaGdAlO4 oscillator optically pumped by a diffraction-limited fiber laser. At the repetition rate of 96 MHz, several configurations have been studied to achieve either pulse duration of 40 fs with average powers up to the watt level or shorter pulse duration down to 32 fs. To the best of our knowledge, this represents the shortest pulse duration ever achieved with an Yb-doped bulk material and the highest average power for sub-40-fs Kerr-lens mode-locked Yb-bulk oscillator.

RESUMO

By using a high-brightness fiber pump laser, we demonstrate a pure Kerr-lens mode-locked (ML) Yb:CaF(2) oscillator. The laser delivers 68 fs pulses with 2.3 W average power at 73 MHz repetition rate and an optical-to-optical efficiency of 33% is achieved. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of Kerr-lens mode-locking in Yb:CaF(2). Incidentally, we report here the highest average power ever achieved for a sub-100-fs active Kerr-lens ML Yb-bulk oscillator.

RESUMO

Optimization of Yb-free Er-doped fiber for lasers and amplifiers cladding pumped at 976 nm was performed in this Letter. The single-mode fiber design includes an increased core diameter of 34 µm and properly chosen erbium and co-dopant concentrations. We demonstrate an all-fiber high power laser and power amplifier based on this fiber with the record slope efficiency of 40%. To the best of our knowledge, the achieved output power of 75 W is the highest power reported for such lasers.

RESUMO

We report on the first demonstration, to the best of our knowledge, of the locking of a Fabry-Perot cavity with a finesse of 28,000 in the pulsed regime. The system is based on a stable picosecond oscillator, an ultrastable cavity with high-reflection mirrors, and an all-numerical feedback system that allows efficient and independent control of the repetition rate and the pulse to pulse carrier-to-envelop phase drift (CEP). We show that the carrier to envelop phase can have a dramatic effect even for pulses with hundreds of cycles. Moreover, we have succeeded in unambiguously measuring the CEP of a 2 ps pulse train. Finally, we discuss the potential of our findings to reach the MW average power level stored in an external cavity enhancement architecture.

RESUMO

The exact quantum time-dependent optical response of hydrogen under strong-field near-infrared excitation is investigated and compared to the perturbative model widely used for describing the effective atomic polarization induced by intense laser fields. By solving the full 3D time-dependent Schrödinger equation, we exhibit a supplementary, quasi-instantaneous defocusing contribution missing in the weak-field model of polarization. We show that this effect is far from being negligible, in particular when closures of ionization channels occur and stems from the interaction of electrons with their parent ions. It provides an interpretation of the higher-order Kerr effect recently observed in various gases.

RESUMO

We report on high-energy femtosecond pulse generation from an ytterbium-doped rod-type fiber oscillator emitting around 976 nm. Self-starting and stable single-pulse operation are demonstrated with 4.2 W of average output power at a repetition rate of 8.4 MHz. The resulting energy level reaches 0.5 µJ. Because of the all-normal dispersion of the laser cavity, output pulses are naturally chirped with a duration of 14 ps. External compression using diffraction gratings shortens the pulse duration down to 460 fs.

RESUMO

Chemoembolization of bone metastases is defined by the intraarterial perfusion of a chemotherapy agent followed by microparticles embolization to improve tissue impregnation. This technique increases the local concentration of the chemotherapy agent. Tumor response (stable or reduced tumor size) is achieved in 30-80% of cases with symptomatic relief in over 80% of cases. The indications, technical considerations, and effectiveness of this procedure will be reviewed.

RESUMO

We report on a passively mode-locked fiber laser emitting around 976nm. The self-starting mode locking is achieved in an unidirectional ring cavity by means of nonlinear polarization evolution. Stable single-pulse operation is observed for 480mW of average output power. This all-normal dispersion laser generates naturally chirped pulses with 1ps duration. The repetition rate is 40.6MHz, resulting in 12nJ pulse energy. External compression using bulk grating shortens the pulse duration down to 286fs.

RESUMO

We report on a significant improvement of the total bandwidth amplified in an optical parametric process. By pumping a parametric amplifier with a broadband pump, we demonstrate amplification of a supercontinuum whose spectrum expands over nearly an octave ranging from less than 600 nm up to 1200 nm. Our amplifier stage is set to provide amplification at degeneracy in the quasi-collinear configuration with a temporally as well as angularly dispersed pump.
