RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Cannabis messaging on digital media may include sexualised portrayals. We examined whether exposure to and perceptions of cannabis posts that included sexual objectification impacted two types of sex-related cannabis expectancies-sexual risk and sexual enhancement-and whether body appreciation moderated these relationships. METHODS: We conducted an online experiment with college students in Washington state. Participants viewed three brand-generated cannabis Instagram posts that either included sexually objectified women or recreational appeals (e.g., sitting by a firepit). We conducted regressions, using the PROCESS macro, to examine the hypothesized model and potential mediation and moderation. RESULTS: Exposure to sexualised advertisements was associated with increased perceptions of cannabis sex enhancement scripts (b = 0.34, p < 0.01), which was associated with increased cannabis sex enhancement expectancies (b = 0.34, p < 0.001) and decreased cannabis sexual risk expectancies (b = -0.16, p < 0.001); exposure to such advertisements were also associated with increased perceptions of cannabis sexual risk scripts (b = 0.61, p < 0.001), which was associated with increased cannabis sexual risk expectancies (b = 0.53, p < 0.001). Body appreciation was associated with increased cannabis sex enhancement expectancies (b = 0.13, p < 0.01) and moderated the relationship between exposure to sexualised ads and cannabis sex enhancement expectancies (b = -0.21, p < 0.01). DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: Practitioners may want to consider how to increase critical consumption of cannabis content on digital media. Researchers should consider the possible role of body appreciation as it relates to cannabis and sex enhancement expectancies.

RESUMO

Health and fitness content intended to inspire people to live healthy lives (e.g. "fitspiration") has been linked to negative body image among girls and young women. Fitness influencers purport wanting to motivate healthy behaviors. This study seeks to examine the presence of strategies known to positively influence health behaviors (e.g. attitudes, self-efficacy) as well as of content known to have a negative influence (e.g. objectification) among fitness influencers. We conducted a content analysis (N = 441) of a random sample of one year of posts from four Instagram fitness influencers popular with girls and young women in the United States. The main analysis consisted of codes related to objectification, health promotion strategies, health-related content, and social engagement (i.e., likes). We found that fitness influencers included content that conveyed constructs previously found to positively influence health behaviors (e.g., attitudes and self-efficacy), but objectification was frequently present, in more than half of the posts. Additionally, we found that the presence of objectification in posts was negatively associated with likes, a form of social endorsement. We suggest health communicators aim to work in tandem with fitness influencers to include content that may motivate positive health behaviors and improve media literacy and that influencers aim to reduce the amount of objectifying content included in their posts. Our findings shed light on content being conveyed and possible insights into the negative effects associated with viewing such content.

RESUMO

Content analyses have documented that posts about cannabis are increasingly common on social media. The relationship between the cannabis-related content to which teens and college students are exposed on social media and how such content may be associated with intentions to use and use of cannabis is less known, however. We conducted an online survey with teens (N = 350) who lived in Washington state using online survey panel participants in June 2018 and with college students (N = 966) in a Washington state-wide university system in February and March 2019. Participants in both samples reported seeing both pro-cannabis and anti-cannabis messages on social media platforms. Exposure to pro-cannabis messages on social media was associated with an increased intention to use cannabis. Exposure to anti-cannabis messages on social media was indirectly associated with decreased intentions to use cannabis through negative outcome beliefs of cannabis use and, among college students, through perceived norms. Among college students specifically, exposure to pro-cannabis messages on social media was also associated with more frequent cannabis use. Health communicators could focus anti-cannabis messaging on negative outcome beliefs among teens and college students as well as norms among college students to potentially influence constructs associated with intentions and use.

RESUMO

Fitspiration content on Instagram often includes images in which women are objectified but may also include captions that aim to positively motivate viewers, such as through messaging about body appreciation. Viewing objectifying content in fitspiration posts may be problematic for young women's mental health, but it's unclear if positive messaging may help to alleviate some of these effects. In this study, we conducted a 2 × 2 online experiment assessing the effects of body appreciation and objectification content present in Instagram fitness posts by influencers on young women (N = 200). The outcome variables were state body appreciation, trait body appreciation, self-esteem, and self-compassion. We found an interaction between the presence and absence of objectification and presence and absence of body appreciation that significantly influenced self-compassion and body appreciation. The interaction suggests that self-compassion and state body appreciation are higher in the presence of body appreciation messaging, although there were not main effects for just viewing objectifying images or body appreciation captions. This means that just body appreciation or just objectification may not affect state body appreciation and self-compassion, but the two together have an effect. Our findings suggest that body appreciation captions may serve as a protective factor for self-compassion and state body appreciation when young women view Instagram fitspiration posts that include sexual objectification. Health communicators could encourage influencers to include body appreciation content in their fitspiration posts to help improve self-compassion among viewers, and interventions could work to promote body appreciation among young women to encourage self-compassion.

RESUMO

Sexual assault is a serious public health issue that is particularly pervasive on U.S. college campuses, and it is well established that men's acceptance of rape myths is associated with negative, and even harmful, attitudes and behaviors toward women. Given the association of rape myths with sexual assault, there is a critical need to identify factors associated with men's acceptance of such myths. To this end, we surveyed 318 fraternity men and 183 non-fraternity college men in the United States to test whether sports media use and conformity to masculine norms, specifically beliefs in controlling women and sexual permissiveness, are associated with rape myth acceptance. Results showed that, after controlling for demographic characteristics including fraternity membership, regular sports media exposure, conformity to masculine norms that support control over women and permissive sexual activity (e.g. playboy norms), were positively associated with rape myth acceptance. This study contributes to a better understanding of multidimensional relationships between sports media consumption, conformity to masculine norms, and rape-supportive culture among young men.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Evidence-based medicine (EBM) is a decision-making process based on the conscious and judicious use of the best available scientific evidence. However, the exponential increase in the amount of information currently available likely exceeds the capacity of human-only analysis. In this context, artificial intelligence (AI) and its branches such as machine learning (ML) can be used to facilitate human efforts in analyzing the literature to foster EBM. The present scoping review aimed to examine the use of AI in the automation of biomedical literature survey and analysis with a view to establishing the state-of-the-art and identifying knowledge gaps. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Comprehensive searches of the main databases were performed for articles published up to June 2022 and studies were selected according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were extracted from the included articles and the findings categorized. RESULTS: The total number of records retrieved from the databases was 12,145, of which 273 were included in the review. Classification of the studies according to the use of AI in evaluating the biomedical literature revealed three main application groups, namely assembly of scientific evidence (n = 127; 47%), mining the biomedical literature (n = 112; 41%) and quality analysis (n = 34; 12%). Most studies addressed the preparation of systematic reviews, while articles focusing on the development of guidelines and evidence synthesis were the least frequent. The biggest knowledge gap was identified within the quality analysis group, particularly regarding methods and tools that assess the strength of recommendation and consistency of evidence. CONCLUSION: Our review shows that, despite significant progress in the automation of biomedical literature surveys and analyses in recent years, intense research is needed to fill knowledge gaps on more difficult aspects of ML, deep learning and natural language processing, and to consolidate the use of automation by end-users (biomedical researchers and healthcare professionals).

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Although use of cannabis during pregnancy can be detrimental to the fetus, use of cannabis during pregnancy has increased. Pregnant people are often exposed to incorrect information about cannabis use during pregnancy online and have expressed a desire for additional information about the effects of using cannabis while pregnant. We wanted to design and test a brief intervention promoting media literacy and science literacy and assess whether exposure would reduce intentions to use cannabis during pregnancy. METHOD: We created two sets of messages, one with a focus on increasing media literacy and another on increasing science literacy. Messages were either presented in a narrative/story or nonnarrative formats. Participants who identified as female, aged 18-40, were recruited online via a Qualtrics panel to participate in the online experiment. We used multigroup structural equation modeling (SEM) to model the relationships across message groups. RESULTS: Results suggested that increased awareness about potential harms of Tetrahydrocannabinol to the fetus was associated with intentions to reduce cannabis use while pregnant in the science literacy conditions for both message types (science narrative b = .389, p = .003; science nonnarrative b = .410, p ≤ .001). Increased media literacy for source was associated with intentions to reduce cannabis use during pregnancy in the media literacy nonnarrative group (b = .319, p = .021) but was not significant for the media literacy narrative condition. CONCLUSIONS: Messages focused on both media literacy and science literacy may be of value to pregnant people who use cannabis, with science literacy likely having a more direct effect. RESUMO

Recreational marijuana continues to be legalized in U.S. states, with popular media discussing connections between cannabis and the facilitation of sexual activity. We conducted two surveys with adolescents and college students in Washington state to examine the role of viewing social media and pro-marijuana content on sex-related marijuana expectancies and intentions to use. In Study 1, among adolescents (N = 350), we found connections between social media use, exposure to pro-marijuana content, and sex-related marijuana expectancies, with boys' sex-related marijuana expectancies predicting intentions to use marijuana. In Study 2, we expanded this research to college students (N = 966), with the addition of frequency of marijuana use as an outcome. For men, sex-related marijuana expectancies were negatively associated with marijuana use. Sex-related marijuana expectancies were not associated with intentions to use or use of marijuana among adolescent girls and college women. Our findings highlight how social media use is associated with increased exposure to pro-marijuana content for adolescents and college students, and how such content is associated with sex-related marijuana expectancies. The mixed relationships in our data between sex-related marijuana expectancies and intentions and use highlight potential gender and developmental differences.

RESUMO

Sex-related cannabis expectancies have been found to be associated with intentions to use cannabis, cannabis use, and sexual behavior. However, the construct of sex-related cannabis expectancies has been adapted from research with limited examination of the scales themselves. We tested (N = 350 adolescents age 13-17; N = 929 young adults age 18-29) measurement invariance of a sex-related cannabis expectancies scale and found the scale invariant between adolescents and emerging adults as well as between genders. But the partial invariance across age groups suggested that one item from the scale contained systematic errors in assessing the age group differences and warrants additional examination. Latent mean difference tests revealed that young people's sex-related cannabis expectancies differ between age groups and genders.

RESUMO

Fibromyalgia has been increasing worldwide and is considered a public health problem. Nonpharmacological treatment through exercise and education is recommended for fibromyalgia management. In this sense, there is a need for interdisciplinary programs to promote health and improve symptoms in fibromyalgia. The purpose of this study was to verify the effectiveness of interdisciplinary health education programs for individuals with fibromyalgia. This is a systematic review that followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses recommendations and was registered at Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (CRD4201913228). A search was conducted in the following databases: Scientific Electronic Library Online, Lilacs, Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online, Scopus, Web of Knowledge ISI, Physiotherapy Evidence Database, Excerpta Medica Database, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Cochrane Library, and SPORTDiscus. The descriptors used were "Fibromyalgia" and "Health Education." Clinical trials published between 1990 and 2019 were selected. The Jadad Quality Scale and the Cochrane Risk-of-Bias Tool were used to evaluate the risk of bias and the methodological quality of the clinical trials. The search found 2887 articles, and only two studies were included in the analysis. Both studies conducted the interventions through lectures and group activities. In particular, the topics most frequently approached at the interdisciplinary health education programs were general information about fibromyalgia, body practices, physical activities, and pharmacological approaches. An interdisciplinary health education program can improve pain and quality of life in people with fibromyalgia; however, evidence shows low methodological quality. This systematic review indicates that studies are of low quality, interfering with the effectiveness of interdisciplinary health education programs.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The ProFibro application (app) was developed as a Mobile Health resource to promote self-care in fibromyalgia management. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the effects of the use of the ProFibro app for six weeks compared to the use of a traditional paper book of similar content to improve health-related quality of life, symptoms, and self-care agency in individuals with fibromyalgia. METHODS: Forty individuals with fibromyalgia were included in this randomized, single-blind, parallel trial. One group received intervention content using the ProFibro app on a smartphone while the other received similar information using a paper book. Participants were assessed at baseline and after six weeks. The primary outcome was the Revised Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire. Secondary outcomes were Widespread Pain Index, Pain Visual Analog Scale, Symptom Severity Scale, and Appraisal of Self-Care Agency Scale - Revised. RESULTS: No differences in changes were found between groups at the end of the treatment for any outcome. Both groups showed improvements in symptom severity. CONCLUSIONS: The use of the ProFibro app for six weeks was not more effective than the use of a traditional paper book with similar content for health-related quality of life, symptoms, or self-care agency in individuals with fibromyalgia. Both groups showed improvements from baseline on severity of symptoms, suggesting that the self-care program using a mobile app or a paper book may be beneficial for individuals with fibromyalgia.

RESUMO

The current study explored the influences of advertising exposure, numbers of marijuana retailers, distance to retailers, and constructs from the integrative model of behavioral prediction, including outcome beliefs, perceived norms, and efficacy, on youth's intentions to use marijuana in a state in which the use of recreational marijuana is legal. A state-wide online cross-sectional survey of 350 adolescents ages 13-17, residing in Washington state, was conducted in June 2018. The results of the regression analysis suggest that exposure to marijuana advertising, positive and negative outcome beliefs, and perceived peer norms were associated with intention to use marijuana. Distances to retailers moderated the relationships between exposure to advertising and intentions, as well as between positive outcome beliefs and intentions. States that have legalized recreational marijuana should continue considering the location of retailers in relation to neighborhoods and advertising regulations to reduce the appeal to youth. Additionally, prevention efforts could aim to influence outcome beliefs and norms in an attempt to reduce adolescents' intentions to use recreational marijuana.

RESUMO

Adolescents often post content related to risk behaviors online, and social media posting related to substance use has been found to be associated with intentions to use substances. However, there is a dearth of research about what may motivate an adolescent to share marijuana-related content. This study aimed to examine the types of content related to marijuana that adolescents are posting on social media and what may influence such sharing. We conducted an online survey in Washington state (N = 350)-a state in which recreational marijuana use is legal for persons at age 21 years and older-and examined adolescents' social media sharing of marijuana-related content. Thirty-one percent of adolescents in our study reported sharing marijuana-related content on social media, with 24 percent of adolescent participants sharing marijuana-related memes. Peer marijuana use and perceived parents' approval of marijuana were positively associated with the likelihood of posting marijuana-related content on social media. Increased perceived parental monitoring was negatively associated with posting marijuana-related content on social media; however, increased parental media monitoring was not. Our research highlights the factors that may influence adolescents' decisions to share marijuana-related content on social media. Internal factors, such as personal beliefs, were not associated with sharing such content in the final model, whereas external factors, such as perceived peer use and parent approval, were positively associated. Our results have implications for communicators who may want to address adolescents' norm perceptions, and parents who may want to informally monitor their children instead of monitoring their children's social media.

ABSTRACT Fibromyalgia (FM) is a condition of high prevalence, which causes physical discomfort, mental distress and impairment of social relationships. Self-care may be a relevant factor to improve the quality of life in individuals with fibromyalgia, since it is related to the act of empowerment, leading individuals to have control over their own life. The aim of this study was to assess self-care agency of individuals with fibromyalgia and check for associations between self-care and symptoms, quality of life and sociodemographic variables. The study included 40 individuals with FM according to the 2010 American College of Rheumatology criteria. Self-care was measured with the Appraisal Self-Care Agency Scale-Revised (ASAS-R), pain with the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and the Widespread Pain Index (WPI), severity of symptoms with the Symptom Severity (SS) Scale, and quality of life with the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire - Revised (FIQ-R). In data analysis, the Pearson correlation coefficient was used for parametric data, and the Spearman correlation coefficient was used for non-parametric data. The level of significance adopted was 5%. Moderate values were found for self-care agency (52.75±10.25), VAS pain (5.84±2.16), WPI (13.32±3.78) and SS (9.30±1.68). Severe impact on quality of life was found with the FIQR (63.98±17.26). Additionally, significant correlations were observed of self-care agency with social status (r=0.391), and with the following FIQ-R domains: function (r=−0.338), overall impact (r=-0.315), symptoms (r=−0.332) and total score (r=−0.375). The study suggests that individuals with fibromyalgia have a moderate level of self-care agency, and a weak association of self-care with quality of life and social status.

RESUMO

IL-33/ST2 axis has been shown to exert both pro- and anti- effects in wound healing and tumor development. To further understand the role of this cytokine complex, we characterized comparatively the inflammatory component of a malignant tissue and non-malignant tissue in mice lacking ST2 receptor (ST2-KO). KO mice and their wild-type (WT) counterparts were either implanted subcutaneously with polyether-polyurethane sponge discs to induce non-malignant fibrovascular tissue growth or inoculated with 4T1 cells to induce mammary tumor. Loss of ST2 receptor in mice resulted in enhanced mammary tumor and fibrovascular tissue relative to the WT animals. The inflammatory parameters (MPO and NAG activities, levels of the cytokines CXCL1/KC, CCL2, TNF-α, TGF-ß1, and mast cell number) were differentially modulated in both tissues. In tumors, these parameters were, overall, lower compared with those in tumors of WT mice. In KO implants, CXCL1/KC and TNF-α levels increased; MPO, NAG, and CCL2 levels decreased relative to the WT implants. In addition, deletion of ST2 receptor inhibited mast cell recruitment but had no effect on TGF-ß1 levels in implants. Our study has shown antitumorigenic effect of ST2 in mammary tumor and this may be mediated by downregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines (CXCL1/KC, CCL2, TNF-α, and TGF-ß1). Conversely, in the fibrovascular tissue, lack of ST2 receptor resulted in differential modulation of cytokine production. Differential signaling mechanisms may be activated by IL-33/ST2 axis to modulate cytokine production in malignant and non-malignant proliferative processes.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Obesity is a highly prevalent multifactorial metabolic condition in which the need for functional bioengineered substitutes (e.g., scaffolds for tissue engineering) is likely to occur. However, the adverse foreign body response (FBR) that invariably takes place adjacent to implant devices impairing their function is poorly characterized in this condition. This study investigated the influence of obesity on the host response to a synthetic matrix implanted subcutaneously in high-fat-fed obese mice. METHODS: Histological analysis of 14-day-old implants was performed to identify collagen deposition, capsule thickness, fibroblast-like cells, foreign body giant cells, and mast cells. In addition, transforming growth factor ß1 (TGF-ß1) levels in the implants and serum were determined. RESULTS: All fibrogenic markers (and TGF-ß1 levels) increased in the implants of obese mice compared with their nonobese counterparts. Particularly relevant was the fibrous capsule thickness in implants of obese mice (234.2 ± 22.1 µm vs. 109.2 ± 13.4 µm in implants of nonobese animals). CONCLUSIONS: The study results showing that obesity upregulates the main features of the FBR induced by subcutaneous implants in mice may be relevant in understanding biomaterial integration and performance in this condition. This is crucial to the development of strategies to maintain the integrity and function of implantable devices.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Pancreas regenerative capacity after injury is not always sufficient to comply with the body's requirement of digestive enzymes and hormones. We present an alternative system to induce pancreas parenchyma proliferation (exocrine and endocrine components), rather than regeneration or remodeling in normoglycemic mice. METHODS: Porous discs of polyether-polyurethane were surgically placed adjacent to the native pancreas and removed at days 15, 30 and 45 after implantation. No exogenous growth factors or extracellular matrix components were added to the platform. The synthetic matrix provided a platform that was filled with parenchymal and non-parenchymal pancreas tissue as detected by histological analysis. Immunohistochemistry analysis were performed to identify insulin positive cells in the newly formed tissue. In addition, angiogenic, inflammatory and metabolic parameters were carried out in those mice. RESULTS: At day 15, the pores of the platform were filled with inflammatory cells, spindled-shaped like fibroblasts, extracellular matrix components, blood vessels and clusters of pancreatic parenchyma (acini, ducts and islet-like structures). At days 30 and 45 the pancreas features remained well organized; its organization resembled that of a native pancreas. Interestingly, besides islet-like structures that showed positive cells to insulin, some ductal cells were also positive for insulin immunostaining. No significant differences in serum glucose and c-peptide concentrations during the experimental period were detected. CONCLUSIONS: The plain synthetic porous platform (without addition of exogenous molecules) placed adjacent to the native organ exhibits potential to restore and/or expand exocrine (acini, ducts) and endocrine (ß-cell mass) components in pancreatic injuries and in high metabolic demand.

RESUMO

AIMS: Currently, animal models of liver regeneration are based on extensive lesions of the native organ and on cellular approaches using biomaterials to host growth factors and extracellular components to create artificial liver systems. We report a polymeric biological platform, minimally invasive, that induced sequential proliferation of liver parenchyma inside the scaffold in mice. MAIN METHODS: Porous discs of polyether-polyurethane were surgically placed under the left liver lobe and removed at days 4, 8, 12 and 25 after implantation. No exogenous growth factors or extracellular matrix components were added to the scaffold. Histological analysis of the implants was performed to identify hepatocytes, liver vascular structures and bile ducts in the newly formed tissue. In addition, systemic markers for hepatic function were determined. KEY FINDINGS: This biohybrid device provided a scaffold that was gradually filled with parenchymal and non-parenchymal liver tissue as detected by histological analysis. At day 4, the pores of the scaffold were filled with inflammatory cells and spindled-shaped like fibroblasts, and extracellular matrix components. At day 8, hepatocytes clusters, central lobular hepatic veins, portal space containing arteries, veins and biliary ducts were detected. By days 12 and 25 a liver-like structure filled 2/3 of the scaffold. Its organization resembled that of a mature liver. Serum concentration of ALT increased three-fold initially after implantation, returning gradually to control levels. SIGNIFICANCE: The plain synthetic scaffold (without addition of exogenous molecules) placed under the intact left liver lobe exhibits the potential to investigate physiological mechanisms that regulate liver parenchyma proliferation.

(AU)

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is one of the most prevalent mental disorders. In spite of this, the lack of recognition of its characteristic symptoms can lead to delay in the diagnosis and treatment. Moreover, the variability of clinical manifestations and the diversity of symptoms are confusing factors by the time of diagnosis. Currently, it is made based on the manuals of diagnostic classifi cation DSM-IV and CID-10 that describes the disorder as one single entity. However, OCD is underdiagnosed due to its heterogeneity from a clinical viewpoint and considering etiological factors and response to treatment. Comorbiditiesalso make the diagnosis even more complex. Therefore, the accurate differential diagnosis is extremely important. This paper intends to reviewthe available scientifi c literature regarding the diversity of clinical expression, the comorbidities that complicate the diagnosis, and the uncommon symptoms of OCD.
