RESUMO

Reptiles can carry and shed the bacterium Salmonella without showing any signs of illness. Transmission occurs by ingesting Salmonella after handling a reptile or objects contaminated by a reptile. Young children are especially vulnerable to Salmonella infection and can experience serious complications. We describe a case of reptile-associated Salmonella meningitis in a 2.5-month-old infant.

RESUMO

Medicaid has historically functioned as the health insurance program for families on welfare, but the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 (PRWORA) "disconnected" the two programs. The idea was that families should not lose Medicaid just because they left welfare under PRWORA's new work requirements and time limits. However, de-linkage has not worked as Congress intended. The states have failed to implement the disconnect properly, causing hundreds of thousands of poor families to drop off the medicaid rolls; most are now uninsured. This issue of States of Health looks at the Medicaid-welfare disconnect and how advocates are responding to protect families and children.

RESUMO

1. Injection of oestradiol results in induction of vitellogenic proteins in the plasma of stickleback, sea bass, sea horse, pipe-fish, rainbow trout and roach. 2. Immunoblotting after SDS-PAA gradient gel electrophoresis of plasma proteins of stickleback, sea bass and rainbow trout reveals that vitellogenins from these species share common antigenic determinants. 3. Yolk proteins are recognized by antivitellogenin antisera which shows that proteolytical cleavage does not destroy all antigenic determinants. 4. Vitellogenic proteins are present only in the yolk granules and near the theca cell layer as is shown by immunocytochemical methods.
