RESUMO

Temporal patterns in spawning and juvenile recruitment can have major effects on population size and the demographic structure of coral reef fishes. For harvested species, these patterns are crucial in determining stock size and optimizing management strategies such as seasonal closures. For the commercially important coral grouper (Plectropomus spp.) on the Great Barrier Reef, histological studies indicate peak spawning around the summer new moons. Here we examine the timing of spawning activity for P. maculatus in the southern Great Barrier Reef by deriving age in days for 761 juvenile fish collected between 2007 and 2022, and back-calculating settlement and spawning dates. Age-length relationships were used to estimate spawning and settlement times for a further 1002 juveniles collected over this period. Unexpectedly, our findings indicate year-round spawning activity generates distinct recruitment cohorts that span several weeks to months. Peak spawning varied between years with no clear association with environmental cues, and little to no alignment with existing seasonal fisheries closures around the new moon. Given the variability and uncertainty in peak spawning times, this fishery may benefit from additional and longer seasonal closures, or alternative fisheries management strategies, to maximize the recruitment contribution from periods of greatest reproductive success.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Pre-hospital intubation by paramedics is widely used in comatose patients prior to transportation to hospital, but the optimal technique for intubation is uncertain. One approach is paramedic rapid sequence intubation (RSI), which may improve outcomes in adult patients with traumatic brain injury. However, many patients present to emergency medical services with coma of non-traumatic cause and the role of paramedic RSI in these patients remains uncertain. METHODS: The electronic Victorian Ambulance Clinical Information System was searched for the term 'suxamethonium' between 2008 and 2011. We reviewed the patient care records and included patients with suspected non-traumatic coma who were treated and transported by road-based paramedics. Demographics, intubation conditions, vital signs (before and after drug administration) and complications were recorded. Younger patients (<60 years) were compared with older patients. RESULTS: There were 1152 paramedic RSI attempts of which 551 were for non-traumatic coma. The success rate for intubation was 97.5%. There was a significant drop in blood pressure in younger patients (<60 years) with the mean systolic blood pressure decreasing by 16 mm Hg (95% CI 11 to 21). In older patients, the systolic blood pressure also decreased significantly by 20 mm Hg (95% CI 17 to 24). Four patients suffered brief cardiac arrest during pre-hospital care, all of whom were successfully resuscitated and transported to hospital. CONCLUSIONS: Paramedic RSI in patients with non-traumatic coma has a high procedural success rate. Further studies are required to determine whether this procedure improves outcomes.

RESUMO

A team working co-operatively to improve the health of lead workers has evolved over the last 10 years. We have monitored 704 employees for red cell lead (4800 samples) from a factory since 1974. In 1975, 32 employees, one-third of the workforce were suspended at a red cell lead level of greater than 10.7 mumol/l. Since 1980 no-one has been suspended at the current lower level of 7.7 mumol/l. By June 1984 the red cell lead mean for all process areas is less than 4.5 mumol/l (average 3.6 mumol/l). In 1984 the usual red cell lead range for local non-industrially exposed adult males is 1.23 SD 0.65 mumol/l. The value of cumulative reporting and contributory factors in reducing the blood levels are discussed.

RESUMO

Relative risks of increased lead absorption found in 31 occupations were investigated. Serial red cell lead measurements on 1319 males and 186 females provided a mean and range for each occupational type. The magnitude of the mean and percentage of raised levels identified the degree of occupational risk. The mean red cell lead for 50% of employees was within the regional usual range for those not occupationally exposed. In 77% the mean red cell lead was less than 4.1 mumol/l. Of the remainder, 4% had levels greater than 5.7 mumol/l and 1% had levels greater than 7.7 mumol/l. Our findings have been used to manage local chronic and acute lead problems.
