This article describes an empirical exploration on the effect of information loss affecting compressed representations of dynamic point clouds on the subjective quality of the reconstructed point clouds. The study involved compressing a set of test dynamic point clouds using the MPEG V-PCC (Video-based Point Cloud Compression) codec at 5 different levels of compression and applying simulated packet losses with three packet loss rates (0.5%, 1% and 2%) to the V-PCC sub-bitstreams prior to decoding and reconstructing the dynamic point clouds. The recovered dynamic point clouds qualities were then assessed by human observers in experiments conducted at two research laboratories in Croatia and Portugal, to collect MOS (Mean Opinion Score) values. These scores were subject to a set of statistical analyses to measure the degree of correlation of the data from the two laboratories, as well as the degree of correlation between the MOS values and a selection of objective quality measures, while taking into account compression level and packet loss rates. The subjective quality measures considered, all of the full-reference type, included point cloud specific measures, as well as others adapted from image and video quality measures. In the case of image-based quality measures, FSIM (Feature Similarity index), MSE (Mean Squared Error), and SSIM (Structural Similarity index) yielded the highest correlation with subjective scores in both laboratories, while PCQM (Point Cloud Quality Metric) showed the highest correlation among all point cloud-specific objective measures. The study showed that even 0.5% packet loss rates reduce the decoded point clouds subjective quality by more than 1 to 1.5 MOS scale units, pointing out the need to adequately protect the bitstreams against losses. The results also showed that the degradations in V-PCC occupancy and geometry sub-bitstreams have significantly higher (negative) impact on decoded point cloud subjective quality than degradations of the attribute sub-bitstream.

The growing use of multimodal high-resolution volumetric data in pre-clinical studies leads to challenges related to the management and handling of the large amount of these datasets. Contrarily to the clinical context, currently there are no standard guidelines to regulate the use of image compression in pre-clinical contexts as a potential alleviation of this problem. In this work, the authors study the application of lossy image coding to compress high-resolution volumetric biomedical data. The impact of compression on the metrics and interpretation of volumetric data was quantified for a correlated multimodal imaging study to characterize murine tumor vasculature, using volumetric high-resolution episcopic microscopy (HREM), micro-computed tomography (µCT), and micro-magnetic resonance imaging (µMRI). The effects of compression were assessed by measuring task-specific performances of several biomedical experts who interpreted and labeled multiple data volumes compressed at different degrees. We defined trade-offs between data volume reduction and preservation of visual information, which ensured the preservation of relevant vasculature morphology at maximum compression efficiency across scales. Using the Jaccard Index (JI) and the average Hausdorff Distance (HD) after vasculature segmentation, we could demonstrate that, in this study, compression that yields to a 256-fold reduction of the data size allowed to keep the error induced by compression below the inter-observer variability, with minimal impact on the assessment of the tumor vasculature across scales.

This article presents a novel end-to-end automatic solution for semantic segmentation of optical coherence tomography (OCT) images. OCT is a non-invasive imaging technology widely used in clinical practice due to its ability to acquire high-resolution cross-sectional images of the ocular fundus. Due to the large variability of the retinal structures, OCT segmentation is usually carried out manually and requires expert knowledge. This study introduces a novel fully convolutional network (FCN) architecture designated by LOCTSeg, for end-to-end automatic segmentation of diagnostic markers in OCT b-scans. LOCTSeg is a lightweight deep FCN optimized for balancing performance and efficiency. Unlike state-of-the-art FCNs used in image segmentation, LOCTSeg achieves competitive inference speed without sacrificing segmentation accuracy. The proposed LOCTSeg is evaluated on two publicly available benchmarking datasets: (1) annotated retinal OCT image database (AROI) comprising 1136 images, and (2) healthy controls and multiple sclerosis lesions (HCMS) consisting of 1715 images. Moreover, we evaluated the proposed LOCTSeg with a private dataset of 250 OCT b-scans acquired from epiretinal membrane (ERM) and healthy patients. Results of the evaluation demonstrate empirically the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, which improves the state-of-the-art Dice score from 69% to 73% and from 91% to 92% on AROI and HCMS datasets, respectively. Furthermore, LOCTSeg outperforms comparable lightweight FCNs' Dice score by margins between 4% and 15% on ERM segmentation.

Increasing demand for more reliable and safe autonomous driving means that data involved in the various aspects of perception, such as object detection, will become more granular as the number and resolution of sensors progress. Using these data for on-the-fly object detection causes problems related to the computational complexity of onboard processing in autonomous vehicles, leading to a desire to offload computation to roadside infrastructure using vehicle-to-infrastructure communication links. The need to transmit sensor data also arises in the context of vehicle fleets exchanging sensor data, over vehicle-to-vehicle communication links. Some types of sensor data modalities, such as Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) point clouds, are so voluminous that their transmission is impractical without data compression. With most emerging autonomous driving implementations being anchored on point cloud data, we propose to evaluate the impact of point cloud compression on object detection. To that end, two different object detection architectures are evaluated using point clouds from the KITTI object dataset: raw point clouds and point clouds compressed with a state-of-the-art encoder and three different compression levels. The analysis is extended to the impact of compression on depth maps generated from images projected from the point clouds, with two conversion methods tested. Results show that low-to-medium levels of compression do not have a major impact on object detection performance, especially for larger objects. Results also show that the impact of point cloud compression is lower when detecting objects using depth maps, placing this particular method of point cloud data representation on a competitive footing compared to raw point cloud data.

Common representations of light fields use four-dimensional data structures, where a given pixel is closely related not only to its spatial neighbours within the same view, but also to its angular neighbours, co-located in adjacent views. Such structure presents increased redundancy between pixels, when compared with regular single-view images. Then, these redundancies are exploited to obtain compressed representations of the light field, using prediction algorithms specifically tailored to estimate pixel values based on both spatial and angular references. This paper proposes new encoding schemes which take advantage of the four-dimensional light field data structures to improve the coding performance of Minimum Rate Predictors. The proposed methods expand previous research on lossless coding beyond the current state-of-the-art. The experimental results, obtained using both traditional datasets and others more challenging, show bit-rate savings no smaller than 10%, when compared with existing methods for lossless light field compression.

The modification of medical devices is an area that has attracted a lot of attention in recent years; particularly, those developments which search to modify existing devices to render them antimicrobial. Most of these modifications involve at least two stages (modification of the base material with a polymer graft and immobilization of an antimicrobial agent) which are both time-consuming and complicate synthetic procedures; therefore, as an improvement, this project sought to produce antimicrobial silicone (PDMS) in a single step. Using gamma radiation as both an energy source for polymerization initiation and as a source of reducing agents in solution, PDMS was simultaneously grafted with acrylic acid and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (AAc:EGDMA) while producing antimicrobial silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) onto the surface of the material. To obtain reproducible materials, experimental variables such as the effect of the dose, the intensity of radiation, and the concentration of the silver salt were evaluated, finding the optimal reaction conditions to obtain materials with valuable properties. The characterization of the material was performed using electronic microscopy and spectroscopic techniques such as 13C-CPMAS-SS-NMR and FTIR. Finally, these materials demonstrated good antimicrobial activity against S. aureus while retaining good cell viabilities (above 90%) for fibroblasts BALB/3T3.

Tailings facility failures represent a significant risk to the environment and communities globally, but until now little data was available on the global distribution of risks and characteristics of facilities to ensure proper governance. We conducted a survey and compiled a database with information on tailings facilities disclosed by extractive companies at the request of institutional investors. Despite limitations in the data, this information disclosure request represents the most comprehensive survey of tailings facilities ever undertaken. The compiled dataset includes 1743 tailings facilities and provides insights into a range of topics including construction method, stability, consequence of failure, stored volume, and the rate of uptake of alternative technologies to dewater tailings and reduce geotechnical risk. Our analysis reveals that 10 per cent of tailings facilities reported notable stability concerns or failure to be confirmed or certified as stable at some point in their history, with distinct trends according to construction method, governance, age, height, volume and seismic hazard. Controversy has surrounded the safety of tailings facilities, most notably upstream facilities, for many years but in the absence of definitive empirical data differentiating the risks of different facility types, upstream facilities have continued to be used widely by the industry and a consensus has emerged that upstream facilities can theoretically be built safely under the right circumstances. Our findings reveal that in practice active upstream facilities report a higher incidence of stability issues (18.3%) than other facility types, and that this elevated risk persists even when these facilities are built in high governance settings. In-pit/natural landform and dry-stack facilities report lower incidence of stability issues, though the rate of stability issues is significant by engineering standards (> 2 per cent) across all construction methods, highlighting the universal importance of careful facility management and governance. The insights reported here can assist the global governance of tailings facility stability risks.

Hypomagnesemia, seizures, and intellectual disability (HSMR) syndrome is a rare disorder caused by mutations in the cyclin M2 (CNNM2) gene. Due to the limited number of cases, extensive phenotype analyses of these patients have not been performed, hindering early recognition of patients. In this study, we established the largest cohort of HSMR to date, aiming to improve recognition and diagnosis of this complex disorder. Eleven novel variants in CNNM2 were identified in nine single sporadic cases and in two families with suspected HSMR syndrome. 25 Mg2+ uptake assays demonstrated loss-of-function in seven out of nine variants in CNNM2. Interestingly, the pathogenic mutations resulted in decreased plasma membrane expression. The phenotype of those affected by pathogenic CNNM2 mutations was compared with five previously reported cases of HSMR. All patients suffered from hypomagnesemia (0.44-0.72 mmol/L), which could not be fully corrected by Mg2+ supplementation. The majority of patients (77%) experienced generalized seizures and exhibited mild to moderate intellectual disability and speech delay. Moreover, severe obesity was present in most patients (89%). Our data establish hypomagnesemia, seizures, intellectual disability, and obesity as hallmarks of HSMR syndrome. The assessment of these major features offers a straightforward tool for the clinical diagnosis of HSMR.

This study evaluated the influence of the Body Condition Score (BCS) and subcutaneous fat thickness on the tissue composition of the digital cushion in horses. Sixty mixed breeds of Criollo horses (21 males and 39 females) were sent for slaughter. All animals were submitted to BCS analysis, through visual antemortem evaluation, and then ultrasound evaluation to estimate the subcutaneous fat thickness. Macroscopic analyses of the thoracic and a pelvic limb (weight, volume, and density of the hooves and digital cushions) were performed. In addition, measurements of the area of internal structures to the hoof and histological analyzes were carried out to measure the areas of adipose, fibroelastic, and collagen fibers of the digital cushion. There were no macroscopic differences in the digital cushion between thoracic and pelvic limbs or between genders (P > .05). Likewise, the histological characteristics between the limbs and the genders were similar (P > .05). There was no correlation between the weight, volume, and density of the digital cushion with the BCS (P > .05). A positive correlation was observed with the area of adipose tissue (P = .038, R2 = 0.28) and a negative correlation with area of fibroelastic tissue (P = .005, R2 = -0.37) and collagen fibers (P = .003, R2 = -0.39). In conclusion, the adipose tissue, fibroelastic tissue, and collagen fibers of equine digital cushion alter their areas in the functions of the various subcutaneous fat patterns in horses.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of calorie restriction (CR) during pregnancy in mice on metabolism and ovarian function in the offspring. Pregnant female mice were divided into two groups, a control group and a CR group (n=7 in each). Mice in the CR group were fed 50% of the amount consumed by control females from Day 10 of gestation until delivery. After weaning, the offspring received diet ad libitum until 3 months of age, when ovaries were collected. Ovaries were serially cut and every sixth section was used for follicle counting. Female offspring from CR dams tended to have increased bodyweight compared with offspring from control females (P=0.08). Interestingly, fewer primordial follicles (60% reduction; P=0.001), transitional follicles (P=0.0006) and total follicles (P=0.006) were observed in offspring from CR mothers. The number of primary, secondary and tertiary follicles did not differ between the groups (P>0.05). The CR offspring had fewer DNA double-strand breaks in primary follicle oocytes (P=0.03). In summary, CR during the second half of gestation decreased primordial ovarian follicle reserve in female offspring. These findings suggest that undernutrition during the second half of gestation may decrease the reproductive lifespan of female offspring.

Retinal signaling under dark-adapted conditions is perturbed during early diabetes. Additionally, dopamine, the main neuromodulator of retinal light adaptation, is diminished in diabetic retinas. However, it is not known if this dopamine deficiency changes how the retina responds to increased light or dopamine. Here we determine whether light adaptation is impaired in the diabetic retina, and investigate potential mechanism(s) of impairment. Diabetes was induced in C57BL/6J male mice via 3 intraperitoneal injections of streptozotocin (75 mg/kg) and confirmed by blood glucose levels more than 200 mg/dL. After 6 weeks, whole-cell recordings of light-evoked and spontaneous inhibitory postsynaptic currents (IPSCs) or excitatory postsynaptic currents (EPSCs) were made from rod bipolar cells and ON sustained ganglion cells, respectively. Light responses were recorded before and after D1 receptor (D1R) activation (SKF-38393, 20 µM) or light adaptation (background of 950 photons·µm-2 ·s-1). Retinal whole mounts were stained for either tyrosine hydroxylase and activated caspase-3 or GAD65/67, GlyT1 and RBPMS and imaged. D1R activation and light adaptation both decreased inhibition, but the disinhibition was not different between control and diabetic rod bipolar cells. However, diabetic ganglion cell light-evoked EPSCs were increased in the dark and showed reduced light adaptation. No differences were found in light adaptation of spontaneous EPSC parameters, suggesting upstream changes. No changes in cell density were found for dopaminergic, glycinergic or GABAergic amacrine cells, or ganglion cells. Thus, in early diabetes, ON sustained ganglion cells receive excessive excitation under dark- and light-adapted conditions. Our results show that this is not attributable to loss in number or dopamine sensitivity of inhibitory amacrine cells or loss of dopaminergic amacrine cells.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection remains a major public health concern. The interaction between HBV and the host inflammatory response is an important contributing factor driving liver damage and diseases outcomes. Here, we performed a retrospective analysis employing an adapted molecular degree of perturbation (MDP) score system to assess the overall inflammatory imbalance related to persistent HBV infection. Plasma levels of several cytokines, chemokines, and other inflammatory markers were measured in Brazilian individuals diagnosed with either chronic HBV or previous HBV infection, as well as in uninfected controls between 2006 and 2007. Multidimensional analyses were used to depict and compare the overall expression profile of inflammatory markers between distinct clinical groups. Chronic HBV patients exhibited a marked inflammatory imbalance, characterized by heightened MDP scores and a distinct profile of correlation networks inputting plasma concentrations of the biomarkers, compared with either individuals with previous HBV or controls. Furthermore, in participants with chronic HBV infection, the viral loads in peripheral blood were directly proportional to overall molecular perturbation as well as to specific perturbations of interleukin (IL)-4 and interferon (IFN)-γ concentrations. These findings highlight additional nuances about systemic inflammation related to persistent HBV infection.

BACKGROUND: Cigarette smoking is associated with an increased risk of developing respiratory diseases and various types of cancer. Early identification of such unfavorable outcomes in patients who smoke is critical for optimizing personalized medical care. METHODS: Here, we perform a comprehensive analysis using Systems Biology tools of publicly available data from a total of 6 transcriptomic studies, which examined different specimens of lung tissue and/or cells of smokers and nonsmokers to identify potential markers associated with lung cancer. RESULTS: Expression level of 22 genes was capable of classifying smokers from non-smokers. A machine learning algorithm revealed that AKR1B10 was the most informative gene among the 22 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) accounting for the classification of the clinical groups. AKR1B10 expression was higher in smokers compared to non-smokers in datasets examining small and large airway epithelia, but not in the data from a study of sorted alveolar macrophages. Moreover, AKR1B10 expression was relatively higher in lung cancer specimens compared to matched healthy tissue obtained from nonsmoking individuals. Although the overall accuracy of AKR1B10 expression level in distinction between cancer and healthy lung tissue was 76%, with a specificity of 98%, our results indicated that such marker exhibited low sensitivity, hampering its use for cancer screening such specific setting. CONCLUSION: The systematic analysis of transcriptomic studies performed here revealed a potential critical link between AKR1B10 expression, smoking and occurrence of lung cancer.

Resumen En los pacientes con trombosis arterial o venosa, in situ o por embolia, el uso de fibrinolíticos (como el rtPA) administrados directamente en el trombo a través de un catéter selectivo en el sitio de la oclusión, permite una resolución más rápida de la oclusión trombótica o embólica con menos dosis total del agente fibrinolítico y por ende con menos complicaciones hemorrágicas que con el uso sistémico. Las indicaciones en las cuales se puede considerar la fibrinólisis selectiva con catéter son básicamente la isquemia aguda de una extremidad por oclusión arterial, la tromboembolia pulmonar, la trombosis venosa profunda iliofemoral (proximal), la trombosis venosa profunda proximal axilo-subclavia, la trombosis de los accesos venosos para diálisis y en los pacientes pediátricos en los casos de trombosis o embolia arterial con extremidad isquémica y en casos seleccionados de trombosis venosa profunda proximal de extremidades. En este consenso describirá cada una de las indicaciones a través de un protocolo para el manejo con rtPA en cada situación, cómo monitorizar su uso y cómo tartar las complicaciones hemorrágicas.


Abstract In patients with arterial or venous thrombosis, in situ or due to an embolism, the use of fibrinolytics (such as recombinant tissue-type plasminogen activator, rtPA) administered directly into the clot through a selective catheter into the occlusion site. This can lead to a more rapid resolution of the thrombotic or embolic occlusion with a lower dose of the fibrinolytic agent, and therefore with less problems with haemorrhages than with systemic use. The situations in which selective fibrinolysis with a catheter can be considered are mainly, acute ischaemia of a limb due to a blocked artery, pulmonary thromboembolism, proximal ileo-femoral deep venous thrombosis, proximal axillo-subclavian deep venous thrombosis, and in the thrombosis of the venous access for dialysis It is also indicated in paediatric patients in cases of arterial thrombosis or embolisms with an ischaemic limb, and in selective cases of proximal deep venous thrombosis of the limbs. In this consensus, a description will be given of each one of the indications, with a protocol for the management with rtPA in each one of them, as well as monitoring its use and the management of haemorrhage complications.

RESUMO

This study aimed to identify gross and microscopic changes, caused by high-energy diets, in the rumen environment and hoof of confined beef cattle. The study sample comprised 40 confined heifers (Bos taurus) with no disease history divided into four experimental groups using different diets: Group 1 (D1, control), 48:52 forage:concentrate ratio; Group 2 (D2), 30:70 forage:concentrate ratio; Group 3 (D3), 30:70 forage:concentrate ratio + sucrose; Group 4 (D4), 100% concentrate. All animals underwent clinical examination, assessment of ruminal fluid pH and lameness, and sample collection after slaughter for histopathology of the hoof laminae and digital cushion and ruminal tissue. All dependent variables of the study were compared using the SPSS 20.0 statistical software. The variables that did not show normality (HR, RM, ST, and CRT) were compared with application of the Kruskal-Wallis test followed by the Dunnet's multiple comparison test. All other variables were submitted to analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Tukey's test. The different diets had an impact on the rumen environment (p<0.05) of the heifers assessed, with momentary general depression in the first 12 h after sucrose induction (D3), as well as mild clinical signs in D4. The animals in D3 and D4 presented lower motility (p<0.05) and ruminal pH (p<0.01) than those in D1. Of the 40 heifers, 27.5% (n=11) showed gross lesions in the epithelium of ruminal pillars, whereas 22.5% (n=9) of those in D3 and D4 presented these lesions. Sole corium thickness varied between heifers in D3 compared with those in D1 and D2 (p<0.05). Therefore, high-energy diets, as used in this study, alter some clinical parameters and the rumen environment, causing lesions in the rumen mucosa, and of lesser intensity, in the hoof corium and laminae, suggestive of laminitis.(AU)


O objetivo deste trabalho foi identificar alterações macroscópicas e microscópicas provocadas por dietas de alto valor energético no ambiente ruminal e casco de bovinos de corte (Bos taurus) em confinamento. Foram utilizadas 40 novilhas mantidas em confinamento, sendo divididas em 4 grupos experimentais: Grupo D1(controle) - 48% de volumoso e 52% de concentrado; Grupo D2 - 30% de volumoso e 70% de concentrado; Grupo D3 - 30% de volumoso e 70% de concentrado + sacarose; Grupo D4 - 100% de concentrado. Foi realizado exame clínico dos animais, avaliação do pH ruminal, da claudicação, além de coletas de amostras post-mortem para análises histopatológicas da região laminar do casco, coxim digital e do rúmen. Todas as variáveis dependentes do estudo foram comparadas por meio do software estatístico SPSS 20.0. As variáveis sem normalidade (FC, MR, Tc e TPC) foram comparadas pelo teste de Kruskal Wallis, seguido pelo teste de comparação múltipla de Dunnet. Todas demais foram submetidas a análise de variância (ANOVA), seguida pelo teste de Tukey. Foi observado impacto das distintas dietas ao ambiente ruminal (p<0,05). Os grupos D3 e D4 exibiram menor motilidade (p<0,05) e pH ruminal (p<0,01). 27,5% (n=11) dos animais tiveram registros macroscópicos de lesões no epitélio dos pilares ruminais enquanto que os submetidos às dietas 3 e 4 foi observada ocorrência de 22,5% (n=9) de lesões macroscópicas no rúmen. As espessuras do córium solear variaram entre os grupos que receberam a indução de sacarose em relação ao grupo controle e novilhas alimentadas com a dieta 2 (p<0,05). Sendo assim dietas com elevada densidade energética, na condição em que foi empregada, alteraram alguns parâmetros clínicos e o ambiente ruminal, provocando lesões na mucosa do rúmen e de pouca intensidade no córium e tecido laminar, sugestiva de laminite.(AU)

Vascular lesions constitute an important cause of morbidity and mortality, including functional disability. Their poor documentation in the literature suggests a low frequency in the pediatric age range. Herein, we describe the case of an 11-year-old-boy with an isolated radial artery injury. The patient initially presented with active bleeding from a lacerated wound. He was intervened on multiple occasions for hematoma formation and suture dehiscence at a primary care center from his community. During his admission, he required a blood transfusion for active bleeding. Vascular exploration was performed, and radial artery lesion was managed by ligation.

Caloric restriction (CR) increases the preservation of the ovarian primordial follicular reserve, which can potentially delay menopause. Rapamycin also increases preservation on the ovarian reserve, with similar mechanism to CR. Therefore, the aim of our study was to evaluate the effects of rapamycin and CR on metabolism, ovarian reserve, and gene expression in mice. Thirty-six female mice were allocated into three groups: control, rapamycin-treated (4 mg/kg body weight every other day), and 30% CR. Caloric restricted females had lower body weight (P < 0.05) and increased insulin sensitivity (P = 0.003), while rapamycin injection did not change body weight (P > 0.05) and induced insulin resistance (P < 0.05). Both CR and rapamycin females displayed a higher number of primordial follicles (P = 0.02 and 0.04, respectively), fewer primary, secondary, and tertiary follicles (P < 0.05) and displayed increased ovarian Foxo3a gene expression (P < 0.05). Despite the divergent metabolic effects of the CR and rapamycin treatments, females from both groups displayed a similar increase in ovarian reserve, which was associated with higher expression of ovarian Foxo3a.

BACKGROUND: Plasmodium vivax and Hepatitis B virus (HBV) are globally outspread in similar geographic regions. The concurrence of both infections and its association with some degree of protection against symptomatic and/or severe vivax malaria has been already described. Nevertheless, data on how host response to both pathogens undermines the natural progression of the malarial infection are scarce. Here, a large cohort of vivax malaria and HBV patients is retrospectively analyzed in an attempt to depict how inflammatory characteristics could be potentially related to the protection to severe malaria in coinfection. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of a databank containing 601 individuals from the Brazilian Amazon, including 179 symptomatic P. vivax monoinfected patients, 145 individuals with asymptomatic P. vivax monoinfection, 28 P. vivax-HBV coinfected patients, 29 HBV monoinfected subjects and 165 healthy controls, was performed. Data on plasma levels of multiple chemokines, cytokines, acute phase proteins, hepatic enzymes, bilirubin and creatinine were analyzed to describe and compare biochemical profiles associated to each type of infection. RESULTS: Coinfected individuals predominantly presented asymptomatic malaria, referred increased number of previous malaria episodes than symptomatic vivax-monoinfected patients, and were predominantly younger than asymptomatic vivax-monoinfected individuals. Coinfection was hallmarked by substantially elevated concentrations of interleukin (IL)-10 and heightened levels of C-C motif chemokine ligand (CCL)2. Correlation matrices showed that coinfected individuals presented a distinct biomarker profile when compared to asymptomatic or symptomatic P. vivax patients, or HBV-monoinfected individuals. Parasitemia could distinguish coinfected from symptomatic or asymptomatic P. vivax-monoinfected patients. HBV viremia was associated to distinct inflammatory profiles in HBV-monoinfected and coinfected patients. CONCLUSION: The findings demonstrate a distinct inflammatory profile in coinfected patients, with characteristics associated with immune responses to both pathogens. These host responses to P. vivax and HBV, in conjunction, could be potentially associated, if not mainly responsible, for the protection against symptomatic vivax malaria.
