RESUMO

In this investigation, the Continuous-Wave Optically Stimulated Luminescence (CW-OSL) properties of polyminerals extracted from Mexican and Peruvian Guajillo chilli were studied using a source of cesium-137 (Cs-137) gamma radiation. The Guajillo chilli polyminerals were stimulated with blue light for 120 s, and their luminescence was detected in the UV region. The General Order Kinetics (GOK) deconvolution analysis of the CW-OSL curves was carried out using three individual components. The CW-OSL dose response from 10 to 5000 Gy was analysed in Guajillo chilli polyminerals. After different storage periods, the polyminerals show an increase in the CW-OSL intensity. A strong and moderate effect of the sunlight (60 min) and artificial (6 h) light is observed on the CW-OSL response. Therefore, the CW-OSL properties of polyminerals could be used in the identification of Mexican and Peruvian Guajillo chilli exposed to Cs-137 gamma radiation.

RESUMO

KMgF3 fluoroperovskite doped with thulium at different concentrations were synthesized by the solid-state reaction method. The phase composition and the thermal stability up to 600 °C of the polycrystals were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis, respectively. The KMgF3 at 1.0 mol% of Tm polycrystals showed the best thermal stability and did not present another phase. The gamma radiation (0.1-10 kGy) effect in thulium-doped KMgF3 produced the F color centers, and their aggregates such as F2, and F3 centers. The F centers, and the potassium vacancies (VK-) in the fluoroperosvkites were analyzed by the optical absorption and emission measurements. Optical absorption at 275 nm and 443 nm were assigned to F and F2, respectively, in undoped KMgF3. Tm-doped fluoroperovskite shows the optical absorption bands at 277, 393, 432, and 577 nm, which were ascribed to the F, F3, F2 and VK- centers, respectively. When the F band for undoped polycrystals was excited at 275 nm, a clear emission associated with F2 and F3 centers was observed. In the case of Tm-doped, an enhancement of the blue emission at 457 nm occurred and a UV band (354 nm) was observed upon exciting the F band. The blue emission of thulium was overlapped with the F3 color center band. The emission bands at 457 and 354 nm were ascribed to 1D2 - 3F4 and 1D2 - 3H6 transitions of Tm in KMgF3. The optical absorption and glow curves were investigated too. The glow curves were assisted by the color centers, vacancies, and thulium impurity. Thermal bleaching shows that the F center was the main participant to give rise to the TL intensity of the glow curves. Thulium acts as a deep electron trap in the bandgap of the KMgF3 fluoroperovskites forming TL peak at the higher temperature, from 430 to 408 °C. The absorption, emission, and thermoluminescence glow peaks of the undoped and Tm-doped KMgF3 were compared.

RESUMO

The aim of this work is to study the dosimetric properties of tissue-equivalent thulium doped NaMgF3 neighborites and to determine their possible application as dosimeters in personal dosimetry. In this aspect, radioluminescence (RL) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dosimetric properties of undoped and Tm3+ -doped NaMgF3 have been investigated for the first time. Samples were synthesized by solid state reaction and by considering a stoichiometric mixture of pure NaF and MgF2 reagents. Two emission peaks centered at 460 and 360 nm have been found in the RL emission spectrum of the doped samples, which can be ascribed to the 1D2 - 3F4 and 1D2 - 3H6 transitions of Tm3+ cations, respectively. Maximum OSL emission under blue light stimulation has been found for samples doped with 0.2 mol % of thulium. Furthermore, the OSL signal of this compound depends linearly on dose within the range 0.05-100 Gy. Besides, its OSL signal features satisfactory repeatability and a minimum detectable dose of 0.04 Gy. Finally, it has been found a low fading of the OSL signal of approximately 13% after the first 60 h, after which the OSL response remains constant. The obtained results suggest the feasibility of using this compound as an OSL detector in personal dosimetry.

RESUMO

Erbium-activated lithium niobate; 1, 2, and 4 mol% (LN-1, LN-2 and LN-4 respectively) were synthesized by solid-state method and their thermoluminescent (TL) properties were analyzed. The glow curve of LN-4 showed a maximum at 177 °C and its linear dose-response interval ranged from 50 to 350 Gy. Its TL intensity was two orders of magnitude greater compared to those of pure lithium niobate (LN), LN-1 and LN-2. We conclude that LN-4 is an interesting material for TL dosimetry applications.

RESUMO

In this work, the continuous wave - optically stimulated luminescence (CW-OSL) emissions of natural salt minerals, collected from Dead Sea in summer of 2015, were studied. The CW-OSL dose response of natural salt showed a linear range between 0.5Gy and 10Gy of gamma radiation of 60Co. Samples exposed at 3Gy exhibited good repeatability with a variation coefficient of 4.6%. The CW-OSL response as function of the preheating temperature (50-250°C) was analyzed. An increase of 15% of the CW-OSL response was observed in NaCl samples during storage period of 336h. The results showed that the natural Dead Sea salt minerals could be applied as natural dosimeter of gamma radiation.

RESUMO

Zinc borate, Zn(BO2)2, doped with different concentrations of terbium (0.5-8mol%) was synthesized and polycrystalline samples were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy and X-Ray Diffraction. The Zn(BO2)2 was formed in the pure samples sintered at 750 and 800°C which has the body centered cubic structure, and a ZnB4O7 primitive orthorhombic phase was present. The thermoluminescent intensity was dependents on the thermal treatment (250-500°C) and also on the impurity concentration. The linear dose-response was obtained between 0.022-27.7Gy and 0.5-50Gy when the samples were exposed to beta and gamma radiation, respectively. The complex structure of the glow curves was analyzed by the Computerized Glow Curve Deconvolution method. The kinetics parameters were calculated assuming the general order kinetics model describing accurately the TL process. The glow curves of Tb3+-doped zinc borate phosphor were well deconvolved by six glow peaks. Zinc borate with 8mol% of impurity concentration exhibited an intense radioluminescent emission. The radioluminescent spectra show their maximum bands at 370, 490, 545 and 700nm related to the terbium ion in the zinc borate. These obtained results suggest that the terbium doped zinc borate is a promising phosphor for use in radiation dosimetry because of its high TL sensitivity to the ionizing radiation.

RESUMO

In this work, luminescent emissions of beta-calcium pyrophosphate doped with terbium ions (ß-Ca2P2O7:Tb3+) were studied. The Ca2P2O7:Tb3+ powders were prepared by precipitation and annealed at 900°C for 2h was applied on the powders to observe the beta phase. Radioluminescence measurements showed emission bands related with 5D3 (5D4)→7FJ transitions of Tb3+ ions. Three overlapped peaks at 126, 165 and 220°C were observed in thermoluminescence response. A linear TL dose-response in the range of 0.2-10Gy and an acceptable TL reproducibility were showed by the ß-Ca2P2O7:Tb3+ samples exposed to 60Co gamma radiation. The TL glow curves were analyzed by Initial Rise method and Computational Glow-Curve Deconvolution assuming a General Order Kinetic model to evaluate the kinetic parameters related with the TL peaks.

RESUMO

The characterization of new materials thermoluminescent used in radiation dosimetry, require the determination of kinetic parameters, which are associated with the number and shape of the peaks which presents its glow curve, among the most important are: the activation energy, E, or depth of the traps, the frequency factor, s, and the kinetics order, b. These parameters are necessary to predict the stability of thermoluminescent information after irradiation of the material. In this work, we present the results obtained for the determination of kinetic parameters of Tm3+-doped CaF2, the methods used for the determination of kinetic parameters were; initial growth signal TL, General order Chen method, and Deconvolution of glow curve. The results showed that the glow curve of CaF2 presents three glow peaks, 492K main peak and two smaller peaks, one at 430K and another to 566K. The dosimetric glow peak fits to the general-order kinetics model.

RESUMO

The increase of disease borne pathogens in foods has promoted the use of new technologies in order to eliminate these pathogen microorganisms and extend the shelf-life of the foodstuffs. In particular, Cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) contains an important number of pathogen microorganisms and it is frequently sterilized by gamma radiation. However, it is important to develop the detection methods for irradiated food in order to keep the dose control and also to analyze the radiation effects in their chemical property. This work reports (i) the photostimulated luminescence (PSL) detection of irradiated cinnamon and thermoluminescence (TL) detection of the inorganic polymineral fraction separated from this spice, and (ii) the proximate chemical analysis carried out on fat, protein and dietetic fiber contents. The detection limits using the PSL and TL methods were 500 Gy and 10 Gy, respectively, and the fat content was increased significantly with the gamma dose that could be related to the lipid oxidation in the cinnamon.

RESUMO

Effects of irradiation with (60)Co gamma photons on poly[2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (MEH-PPV), poly[2-methoxy-5-(3',7' dimethyloctyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (MDMO-PPV) and tris(2,2'-bipyridyl)dichlororuthenium(II) hexahydrate (Ru(bpy)3) thin films were analyzed regarding their thermoluminescence (TL) and photoluminescence (PL) properties. A linear TL dose response was obtained from the MEH-PPV and MDMO-PPV polymer films in dose ranges of approximately 0.170-4.08kGy and 0.170-0.850kGy, respectively, followed by a supralinear behavior. A dependence on the conjugation length of the polymer chains which was favored by heating of the film, was observed, and irradiation generated a blue-shift in MEH-PPV and Ru(bpy)3. Furthermore, the PL structure was not modified. The most likely effect involved in the TL emission was trapping. The high activation energy values of the traps in the TL may be attributed in part to the binding energy of the exciton. A deconvolution process was carried out to obtain the kinetic parameters from the TL glow curves and PL spectra.

RESUMO

Imported commercial samples of Yerba Mate (Ilex paraguariensis) tea leaves were characterized by thermoluminescence (TL) and photoluminescence (PSL) physical methods. Samples of Yerba Mate were irradiated between 0.5-50Gy and 20Gy-5kGy gamma doses by using two different dose rates from (60)Co irradiators. The Electron Dispersive Analysis (EDS) shows that the inorganic fraction is mainly composed by quartz and Ca-feldspars minerals. These polyminerals show a good sensitivity to gamma radiation and to UV light (530nm). Linear dose-response curves were obtained between 0.5 and 12Gy at low dose-rate, and with 20 to 500Gy at high dose-rate of gamma radiation. At higher doses (600Gy) an apparent slow saturation effect was observed. Low fading of the TL signal was found. The detection limits of TL and PSL are 6Gy and 300Gy, respectively. Results show that luminescence emission (TL and PSL) is a reliable method for detection of irradiation Yerba Mate.

RESUMO

Discandium titanate (Sc2TiO5) powder was synthesized in order to analyze its thermoluminescence (TL) response. The TL glow curve structure shows two peaks: at 453-433 K and at 590-553 K. The TL beta dose-response has a linear behavior over the dose range 50-500 Gy. The T(stop) preheat method shows five glow peaks that were taken into account to calculate the kinetic parameters using the CGCD procedure. TL results support the possible use of Sc2TiO5 as a new phosphor in high ß-dose dosimetry.

RESUMO

The isothermal decay method is useful for determining the trap activation energy in thermoluminescent material for dosimetry purposes. Recently we proposed new modified expressions for isothermal decay method. As validation of the modified expressions, after long-term (4 h) high temperature storage, the activation energy of experimental TL glow peaks, KMgF3:Lu (0.17 and 0.34 mol%) and LiF:Mg (0.04 mol%), in the framework of the general-order kinetic was calculated. The results of the kinetics parameters were compared with those obtained by the other methods like Initial Rise (IR), Sequential Quadratic Programming Glow Curve Deconvolution (SQPGCD), deconvolution of the TL glow curves by assuming the General Order Kinetic (GOK), and Chen General-Order Kinetics method. It seems that both SQPGCD and GOK deconvolution methods give more accurate kinetics parameters values for the experimental glow curves.

RESUMO

We report the effect of thermal treatment on thermoluminescent (TL) sensitivity property of CaSO4:Dy obtained by a new preparation method at Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Nucleares (ININ) of Mexico. Samples of phosphor powder were subjected to different thermal treatments respectively at 773, 873, 973 and 1,173K for 1h and then irradiated from 0.1 to 1,000 Gy gamma doses. Low energy dependence was analyzed too by irradiating with X-rays in the range of 16-145 keV. The results were normalized to the energy (1,252 keV) of (60)Co and they were compared with those obtained using the commercial dosimeters TLD-100. Also the kinetic parameters were determined by deconvolution of glow curve.

RESUMO

Food irradiation is a widely employed technology for food treatment. Since in several countries no regulations prevail, it is difficult to detect whether food has been irradiated or not. Among different analytical methods the study of the thermoluminescent (TL) emission of polymineral extracted from food is one of the most useful physical identification method. The aim of this work is to analyze the TL properties of inorganic polyminerals extracted from commercial clove (Syzygium aromaticum L.) and marjoram (Origanum majorana L.) spices exposed to (60)Co gamma radiation for detection purposes. The feasibility of using the TL method for irradiated food detection and absorbed dose determination is assessed.

RESUMO

The perovskite-like LiMgF(3):ErF(3) pellets were obtained from the melt formed by LiF and MgF(2) mixed salts in the stoichiometric ratio. The perovskite material was doped with 1, 2 and 4 mol% of ErF(3) impurity. The pellets samples were (60)Co gamma irradiated and their thermoluminescence (TL) properties were analyzed, i.e., dose-response, fading at RT and under UV irradiation, TL signal reproducibility, and kinetic parameters. The intensity of the TL response against irradiation dose was increased remarkably by the high concentration of impurity, and a linear dose-response was observed in the range of 1-10 Gy. The fading observed at RT was about 10-30% after 24h from irradiation. All samples were exposed from 1 to 200 Gy gamma dose range. The TL glow peaks were found around 367-376, 438-447, 509-521, and 594-611 K, when the doped samples were 1, 2 and 4 mol% of the erbium impurity concentration. The thermoluminescence kinetics parameters of the glow curves have been analyzed using the Computerized Glow Curve Deconvolution (CGCD) method.

RESUMO

This paper reports the thermoluminescence (TL) analysis performed on the oyster shells powder. TL response of (60)Co gamma-rays irradiated samples were studied in the range from 80 Gy to 8 kGy doses. TL signal of irradiated shell powder was higher as compared to the unirradiated control samples, which allowed to identify the irradiated oysters. Results show that the oyster shells have good TL properties and can be useful for the identification of irradiated seafood as well as for the evaluation of the treatment dose.

RESUMO

The influence of heating rate on the thermoluminescence (TL) property of LiF:Mg,Cu,P+PTFE was analyzed. The activation energy and the frequency factor as a function of the heating rate were determined. The kinetic parameters and their dependence on the heating rate were evaluated using the sequential quadratic programming glow curve deconvolution (SQPGCD). The results showed that as the heating rate increases, the peak intensity at the maximum (I(M)) decreases and shifts to higher temperature; similar behavior of the kinetics parameters was observed.

RESUMO

This paper gives a full mathematical description of the kinetics expressions used in thermoluminescent isothermal decay experiments. The corresponding equations have been slightly modified considering the peak intensity at the maximum (I(M)) instead of the peak area Φ as proportional to absorbed dose, given normally in isothermal decay equations. The isothermal decay method was applied to the principal glow peaks of two different phosphors: LiF:Mg,Cu,P+PTFE, using first- and second-order kinetics, and BaSO(4):Eu+PTFE, using second-order kinetics.

RESUMO

The thermoluminescent response and kinetics parameters of NaCl, doubly activated by Ca-Mn and Cd-Mn ions, exposed to gamma radiation are analyzed. The doped NaCl samples were irradiated at relative low temperature, i.e. at the liquid nitrogen temperature (LNT) and at dry ice temperature (DIT), and the glow curves obtained after 2 Gy of gamma irradiation were analyzed using the computerized glow curve deconvolution (CGCD). An evident variation in the glow curve structure after LNT and DIT was observed. It seems that different kinds of trapping levels are activated at relative low temperature. The original two prominent peaks in compositions A (Ca,Mn) and B (Ca,Mn) have been changed in only one main peak with satellites in the low temperature side of the glow curves. In compositions C (Cd,Mn) and D (Cd,Mn), low temperature peaks become stronger and prominent than the high temperature peaks; this effect could be explained considering that the trapping probability for low temperature traps, the one very close to the conduction band, is enhanced by low temperatures during irradiation.
