RESUMO

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic affected older adults worldwide. Sedentary older adults experienced more severe adverse health effects due to their shelter-in-place. Physical activity was strongly recommended during periods of social distancing. The present study evaluated the impact of a virtually supervised exercise program on the physical fitness and mental health of Mexican older adults during the pandemic's lockdown. Methods: Participants were 44 older adults who were assigned to one of four physical fitness groups: a healthy control group (Ctrl-H, n = 15), a comorbidity control group (Ctrl-COM, n = 9), an exercise group without comorbidities (Exe-H, n = 11), and an exercise group with comorbidities (Exe-COM, n = 9). The participants engaged in a 60-min, virtually-supervised concurrent exercise session three times/week for 12 weeks. Fitness was measured using the online Senior Fitness Tests and the 4-m Gait Speed Test. Mental health was evaluated through virtual interviews using the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, the Geriatric Depression Scale, and the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale. Within-subject pre vs. post-intervention comparisons tested for significant differences, between-groups and over time. Results: Significant interactions were found in the scores of the Geriatric Depression Scale (p ≤ 0.0001; ηp2 = 0.35), the Hamilton Depression Scale (p ≤ 0.0001; ηp2 = 0.35), resilience scores (p ≤ 0.0001; ηp2 = 0.46), lower-body strength (p ≤ 0.0001; ηp2 = 0.32), timed up-and-go test (p = 0.018; ηp2 = 0.18), the 6MWT distance scores (p ≤ 0.0001; ηp2 = 0.39), and the 4-m gait speed test scores (p = 0.011; ηp2 = 0.20). Conclusion: A long-term virtually-supervised exercise program conducted during the COVID-19 lockdown period led to marked improvements in both the fitness and mental health of older Mexican adults. Comorbidities did not diminish these benefits. These findings provide empirical support for online exercise programs in the daily routines of older adults to make clinically meaningful improvements in both physical and mental well-being.

BACKGROUND: Valid and reliable measurements are necessary to understand and monitor age-related changes. AIMS: To describe the factor structure and provide validity evidence of a neuropsychological and a physical testing batteries using factor analysis. METHODS: We performed a secondary analysis of data from the Epidemiology and Development of Alzheimer's Disease (EDAD) project. Community-dwelling adults aged 55 to 85 years underwent comprehensive physical and neuropsychological assessments. An exploratory factor analysis was performed on both assessment batteries. The models were later confirmed with a random subsample using confirmatory factor analysis. RESULTS: Data from 238 adults (163 females and 75 males) was included. The neuropsychological model revealed a four-factor structure formed by "Executive Functioning", "Verbal Memory", "Logical Memory", and "Labeling And Reading" (Extraction Sums of Squared Loadings [ESSL] = 56.41% explained variance; Standardized Root Mean Square Residual [SRMSR] = 0.06; Comparative Fit Index [CFI] = 0.98). The physical model was formed by a two-factor structure including "Health-related Fitness and "Functional Fitness" (ESSL = 50.54% explained variance; SRMSR = 0.07; CFI = 0.93). DISCUSSION: To our knowledge, this is the first study to analyze the structure of comprehensive testing batteries for the Latin-American older adults. Our analysis contributes to the understanding of theoretical constructs that are evaluated in the EDAD project. CONCLUSION: Our findings provide validity evidence for simplified and reduced testing batteries, which imply shorter testing times and fewer resources.

Sarcopenia and disability in older adults are often characterized by body composition measurements; however, the gold standard of body composition measurement, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), is expensive to acquire and maintain, making its use in low and middle income countries (LMIC) it out-of-reach in developing nations. Because these LMIC will bear a disproportionate amount of chronic disease burden due to global aging trends, it is important that reliable, low-cost surrogates need to be developed. Handgrip strength (HGS) is a reliable measure of disability in older adults but has not been used widely in diverse populations. This study compared HGS to multiple measurements of body composition in older adults from the US (Kansas) and a middle-income country (Costa Rica) to test if HGS is a cross-culturally appropriate predictive measure that yields reliable estimates across developed and developing nations. Percent body fat (%BF), lean tissue mass index (LTMI), appendicular lean soft tissue index (ALSTI), body fat mass index (BFMI), bone mineral density (BMD), and HGS were measured in older Costa Ricans (n = 78) and Kansans (n = 100). HGS predicted lean arm mass with equal accuracy for both samples (p ≤ 0.05 for all groups), indicating that it is a reliable, low-cost and widely available estimate of upper body lean muscle mass. Older adults from Costa Rica showed different body composition overall and HGS than controls from Kansas. Handgrip operates equivalently in the US and Mesoamerica and is a valid estimate of lean arm muscle mass as derived by the more expensive DEXA.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate whether infants randomized in the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Neonatal Research Network Necrotizing Enterocolitis Surgery Trial differed from eligible infants and whether differences affected the generalizability of trial results. STUDY DESIGN: Secondary analysis of infants enrolled in Necrotizing Enterocolitis Surgery Trial (born 2010-2017, with follow-up through 2019) at 20 US academic medical centers and an observational data set of eligible infants through 2013. Infants born ≤1000 g and diagnosed with necrotizing enterocolitis or spontaneous intestinal perforation requiring surgical intervention at ≤8 weeks were eligible. The target population included trial-eligible infants (randomized and nonrandomized) born during the first half of the study with available detailed preoperative data. Using model-based weighting methods, we estimated the effect of initial laparotomy vs peritoneal drain had the target population been randomized. RESULTS: The trial included 308 randomized infants. The target population included 382 (156 randomized and 226 eligible, non-randomized) infants. Compared with the target population, fewer randomized infants had necrotizing enterocolitis (31% vs 47%) or died before discharge (27% vs 41%). However, incidence of the primary composite outcome, death or neurodevelopmental impairment, was similar (69% vs 72%). Effect estimates for initial laparotomy vs drain weighted to the target population were largely unchanged from the original trial after accounting for preoperative diagnosis of necrotizing enterocolitis (adjusted relative risk [95% CI]: 0.85 [0.71-1.03] in target population vs 0.81 [0.64-1.04] in trial) or spontaneous intestinal perforation (1.02 [0.79-1.30] vs 1.11 [0.95-1.31]). CONCLUSION: Despite differences between randomized and eligible infants, estimated treatment effects in the trial and target population were similar, supporting the generalizability of trial results. The blood brain barrier (BBB) is a multicellular microenvironment that plays an important role in regulating bidirectional transport to and from the central nervous system (CNS). Infections by many acutely infectious viruses such as alphaviruses and flaviviruses are known to impact the integrity of the endothelial lining of the BBB. Infection by Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis Virus (VEEV) through the aerosol route causes significant damage to the integrity of the BBB, which contributes to long-term neurological sequelae. An effective therapeutic intervention strategy should ideally not only control viral load in the host, but also prevent and/or reverse deleterious events at the BBB. Two dimensional monocultures, including trans-well models that use endothelial cells, do not recapitulate the intricate multicellular environment of the BBB. Complex in vitro organ-on-a-chip models (OOC) provide a great opportunity to introduce human-like experimental models to understand the mechanistic underpinnings of the disease state and evaluate the effectiveness of therapeutic candidates in a highly relevant manner. Here we demonstrate the utility of a neurovascular unit (NVU) in analyzing the dynamics of infection and proinflammatory response following VEEV infection and therapeutic effectiveness of omaveloxolone to preserve BBB integrity and decrease viral and inflammatory load.

Habitat loss, flood control infrastructure, and drought have left most of southern California and northern Baja California's native freshwater fish near extinction, including the endangered unarmoured threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus williamsoni). This subspecies, an unusual morph lacking the typical lateral bony plates of the G. aculeatus complex, occurs at arid southern latitudes in the eastern Pacific Ocean and survives in only three inland locations. Managers have lacked molecular data to answer basic questions about the ancestry and genetic distinctiveness of unarmoured populations. These data could be used to prioritize conservation efforts. We sampled G. aculeatus from 36 localities and used microsatellites and whole genome data to place unarmoured populations within the broader evolutionary context of G. aculeatus across southern California/northern Baja California. We identified three genetic groups with none consisting solely of unarmoured populations. Unlike G. aculeatus at northern latitudes, where Pleistocene glaciation has produced similar historical demographic profiles across populations, we found markedly different demographics depending on sampling location, with inland unarmoured populations showing steeper population declines and lower heterozygosity compared to low armoured populations in coastal lagoons. One exception involved the only high elevation population in the region, where the demography and alleles of unarmoured fish were similar to low armoured populations near the coast, exposing one of several cases of artificial translocation. Our results suggest that the current "management-by-phenotype" approach, based on lateral plates, is incidentally protecting the most imperilled populations; however, redirecting efforts toward evolutionary units, regardless of phenotype, may more effectively preserve adaptive potential.

ABSTRACT Objective Evidence regarding sleep quality in older adults residing in urban and rural areas is lacking among Latino populations living outside the United States. The purpose of the study was to compare the perceived sleep quality of older adults from Costa Rica in urban and rural areas. Methods Volunteers were 52 urban and 30 rural older adults who completed anthropometric measures, cognitive screening, demographic information, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index questionnaire (PSQI). Non-parametric Mann-Whitney U tests determined differences on subjective sleep quality, sleep latency, sleep duration, habitual sleep efficiency, sleep disturbances, use of sleep medication, sleep daily dysfunction, and global PSQI. Multiple regression analyses determined sociodemographic predictors of sleep quality. Results Regardless of the residency zone, older adults showed similar subjective sleep quality (p=0.077), sleep latency (p=0.863), sleep duration (p=0.316), sleep efficiency (p=0.613), use of sleep medication (p=0.207), and total PSQI score (p=0.270). Sleep perturbation (p=0.009) and sleep daily dysfunction (p=0.019) were higher in rural than in urban older adults. Education predicted sleep perturbation (p=-0.266, p=0.049, R2 =0.17). Age (p=-0.309, p=0.025) and residency region (P=0.346, p=0.024) predicted sleep daily dysfunction (R2=0.196). Conclusion Most sleep quality measures were similar between older adults residing in urban and rural zones. Low education predicted sleep perturbation regardless of the residency zone; and younger age and urban zone predicted higher sleep daily dysfunction.


RESUMEN Objetivo Evidencia sobre la calidad del sueño en adultos mayores que residen en áreas urbanas y rurales es escasa en las poblaciones latinas que viven fuera de los Estados Unidos. El propósito del estudio fue comparar la percepción de la calidad del sueño de adultos mayores de Costa Rica de zonas urbanas y rurales. Métodos Los voluntarios fueron 52 adultos mayores residentes en zonas urbanas y 30 en zonas rurales, quienes completaron medidas antropométricas, evaluación cognitiva, información demográfica y el cuestionario del Índice de Calidad del Sueño de Pittsburgh (PSQI). Las pruebas no paramétricas U de Mann-Whitney determinaron diferencias en la calidad subjetiva del sueño, la latencia del sueño, la duración del sueño, la eficiencia habitual del sueño, los trastornos del sueño, el uso de medicamentos para dormir, la disfunción diaria del sueño y el PSQI global. Resultados Independientemente de la zona de residencia, los adultos mayores mostraron similar calidad subjetiva del sueño (p=0.077), latencia del sueño (p=0.863), duración del sueño (p=0.316), eficiencia del sueño (p=0.613), uso de medicamentos para dormir (p=0.207) y puntuación total del PSQI (p=0.270). La perturbación del sueño (p=0.009) y la disfunción diaria del sueño (p=0.019) fueron mayores en los adultos mayores rurales que en los urbanos. Conclusión La mayoría de las medidas de calidad del sueño fueron similares entre los adultos mayores que residen en zonas urbanas y rurales. La baja educación predijo la perturbación del sueño independientemente de la zona de residencia, mientras que la edad más joven y la zona urbana predijeron una mayor disfunción diaria del sueño.

Spitefulness is a personality trait characterized by an inclination to cause harm to others in a manner that also results in self-harm. Studies considering this trait have mostly been performed in individualistic cultures. Our aim was to adapt and accumulate statistical evidence for the Brazilian Portuguese version of the Spitefulness Scale (SS-BP), examining the functioning of the instrument in a collectivist culture. Study 1 adapted the instrument, investigated dimensionality, and examined item functioning and gender invariance in a sample of 766 participants (53.4% male) aged between 18 and 63 years old (M = 23.71; SD = 7.92). Study 2 examined the association of spitefulness with aversive and healthy personality traits (i.e., the dark triad, honesty-humility, emotionality, extroversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness [HEXACO], antagonism, and disinhibition) in a sample of 288 individuals (mostly women 84.7%) between 18 and 71 years old (M = 41.82; SD = 13.04). Similar to the original instrument, the SS-BP was unidimensional and there was measurement invariance with respect to gender. Men were more spiteful than women. Spitefulness yielded large correlations with psychopathy, deceitfulness, and irresponsibility. The SS-BP appears to present adequate psychometric properties for Brazilian samples. Background: Human brain function declines with aging. In this sense, exercise-based interventions has a promising effect on brain plasticity for older adults. Serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a positive biomarker for brain neuroplasticity in healthy older adults also modified by exercise training. Selected features of the exercise prescription for improving brain health are missing; therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the effects of concurrent exercise training frequency on serum BDNF levels in healthy older adults. Methods: Nineteen volunteers (age: 65 ± 4 year; body mass index: 28.0 ± 4.5 kg/m2) completed either a three times/week (3-t/w) (n = 8) or five times/week (5-t/w) (n = 11) concurrent exercise program. The exercise program lasted 11 weeks and all exercise sessions were performed for 50 min at moderate intensity. Serum BDNF, body composition, cardiovascular, and physical fitness variables were assessed before and after the exercise training program. Results: Regardless of the group, the serum BDNF increased following the intervention (p < 0.001), and there were no significant group (p = 0.827) or interaction (p = 0.063) effects. The maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) increased regardless of the group (p = 0.007), with a non-significant group (p = 0.722) or interaction (p = 0.223) effects. Upper- and lower-body strength increased in both groups (p = 0.003); however, there was no effect of the training frequency (p = 0.53). For the skeletal muscle mass, there was a trend in the interaction effect (p = 0.053). Finally, the body fat percentage was unchanged. Conclusion: Eleven weeks of combined exercise training increased serum BDNF levels in healthy older adults, a response independent of the training frequency. The overall fitness level improved similarly in both exercise groups. These data reveal that a minimal dosage of concurrent exercise enhance functional capacity and a brain health biomarker in older adults.

This study evaluated the measurement invariance of a neuropsychological battery across rural and urban older adults from Costa Rica. Rural and urban older adults (N = 295) from the Epidemiology and Development of Alzheimer's Disease (EDAD) study in Costa Rica were assessed. The baseline factor model for the EDAD neuropsychological measures was identified with nine neuropsychological measures and three cognitive constructs: Verbal Memory, Spatial Reasoning, and Cognitive Flexibility. Measurement and structural invariance were established, and, then, group comparisons of the latent cognitive factors were conducted to explore regional disparities. The findings showed that most of the neuropsychological tests in EDAD can be directly compared across the groups, allowing for cognitive constructs comparisons. The rural sample showed a disadvantage in the Spatial Reasoning and Cognitive Flexibility abilities. When age and education were included in the models, differences between the regions disappeared. Having more years of education was associated with higher cognitive abilities, with a larger effect for the rural group. Norms for Costa Rican older adults should consider age and education adjustments. This study contributes to the growing area of measurement invariance in neuropsychological assessment as it highlights the importance of examining the comparability of assessment measures across different cultural groups.

Between March 2020 and February 2022, use of telemedicine services in the U.S. shifted dramatically in response to the evolving SARS-CoV2 pandemic. The initial wave caused many non-emergent clinical services to be postponed, including specialty care clinic visits, which were rapidly converted to telemedicine encounters. Telemedicine use ebbed and flowed with subsequent pandemic waves. This paper describes trends in telemedicine use from March 2020-February 2022 at Geisinger, a predominantly rural integrated health system. It highlights characteristics of 5,390 virtual vs. 15,740 in-person clinic visits to neurosurgery and gastroenterology specialists in December 2021 and January 2022. Differences in ordering of diagnostic testing and prescription medications, as well as post-clinic-visit utilization, varied by specialty. Virtual visits in these specialties saved patients from traveling over 174,700 miles/month to attend appointments. Analyzing telemedicine use patterns can inform future resource allocation and determine when virtual encounters can complement or replace in-person specialty care visits.

OBJECTIVE: To assess adherence to clinical protocols in the emergency department after the implementation of embedded order panels in the electronic health record. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Due to infrequent use, a subset of order sets were redesigned as embedded order panels in a menu-style quick list. Usage was measured before and after implementation at seven departments. RESULTS: There were 2,247 applicable encounters during the pre-intervention period and 1,723 post-intervention. The use of order sets increased significantly after implementation (14% vs. 33% or encounters, p < 0.001). Traditional order sets required at least seven keystrokes or mouse clicks, while embedded order panels required only two. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Use of order sets increased after implementation of embedded order panels; however, they were still only used for about one-third of applicable encounters suggesting that more work is needed to increase treatment protocol adherence and electronic health record efficiency.

The overt or covert ability to follow commands in patients with disorders of consciousness is considered a sign of awareness and has recently been defined as cortically mediated behaviour. Despite its clinical relevance, the brain signatures of the perceptual processing supporting command following have been elusive. This multimodal study investigates the temporal spectral pattern of electrical brain activity to identify features that differentiated healthy controls from patients both able and unable to follow commands. We combined evidence from behavioural assessment, functional neuroimaging during mental imagery and high-density electroencephalography collected during auditory prediction, from 21 patients and 10 controls. We used a penalised regression model to identify command following using features from electroencephalography. We identified seven well-defined spatiotemporal signatures in the delta, theta and alpha bands that together contribute to identify DoC subjects with and without the ability to follow command, and further distinguished these groups of patients from controls. A fine-grained analysis of these seven signatures enabled us to determine that increased delta modulation at the frontal sensors was the main feature in command following patients. In contrast, higher frequency theta and alpha modulations differentiated controls from both groups of patients. Our findings highlight a key role of spatiotemporally specific delta modulation in supporting cortically mediated behaviour including the ability to follow command. However, patients able to follow commands nevertheless have marked differences in brain activity in comparison with healthy volunteers.

The use of copy-paste in authoring clinical notes has been widely embraced by busy providers, but inappropriate copy-paste has been lambasted by critics for introducing risks related to patient safety and regulatory compliance. At an integrated academic health system with over 4,100 providers writing notes, we developed a pragmatic approach to assess the use of copy-paste. From January 1-December 31, 2020, approximately 2.3M inpatient notes and 6.6M ambulatory clinic notes were authored in our electronic health record. Of the inpatient notes, 42% used copy-paste, and 19% of overall note content was copied; in ambulatory notes, 18% used copy-paste and 12% of note content was copied. We describe an approach for including providers' copy-paste usage statistics into the ongoing professional practice evaluation process required for hospital accreditation, thereby offering individual training opportunities related to the lack of use of copy-paste or its potential overuse.

RESUMO

The Western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) is a hotspot for environmental change and has a strong environmental gradient from North to South. Here, for the first time we used adult individuals of the bivalve Aequiyoldia eightsii to evaluate large-scale spatial variation in the biochemical composition (measured as lipid, protein and fatty acids) and energy content, as a proxy for nutritional condition, of three populations along the WAP: O'Higgins Research Station in the north (63.3°S), Yelcho Research Station in mid-WAP (64.9°S) and Rothera Research Station further south (67.6°S). The results reveal significantly higher quantities of lipids (L), proteins (P), energy (E) and total fatty acids (FA) in the northern population (O'Higgins) (L: 8.33 ± 1.32%; P: 22.34 ± 3.16%; E: 171.53 ± 17.70 Joules; FA: 16.33 ± 0.98 mg g) than in the mid-WAP population (Yelcho) (L: 6.23 ± 0.84%; P: 18.63 ± 1.17%; E: 136.67 ± 7.08 Joules; FA: 10.93 ± 0.63 mg g) and southern population (Rothera) (L: 4.60 ± 0.51%; P: 13.11 ± 0.98%; E: 98.37 ± 5.67 Joules; FA: 7.58 ± 0.48 mg g). We hypothesize these differences in the nutritional condition could be related to a number of biological and environmental characteristics. Our results can be interpreted as a consequence of differences in phenology at each location; differences in somatic and gametogenic growth rhythms. Contrasting environmental conditions throughout the WAP such as seawater temperature, quantity and quality of food from both planktonic and sediment sources, likely have an effect on the metabolism and nutritional intake of this species.

BACKGROUND: Organ transplantation is life-saving and continued investigations into immunologic mechanisms that drive organ rejection are needed to improve immunosuppression therapies and prevent graft failure. DNA-dependent protein kinase catalytic subunit, DNA dependent-protein kinase catalytic subunit (DNA-PKcs), is a critical component of both the cellular and humoral immune responses. In this study, we investigate the contribution of DNA-PKcs to allogeneic skin graft rejection to potentially highlight a novel strategy for inhibiting transplant rejection. METHODS: Fully MHC mismatched murine allogeneic skin graft studies were performed by transplanting skin from BalbC mice to C57bl6 mice and treating with either vehicle or the DNA-PKcs inhibitor NU7441. Graft rejection, cytokine production, immune cell infiltration, and donor-specific antibody formation were analyzed. RESULTS: DNA-PKcs inhibition significantly reduced necrosis and extended graft survival compared with controls (mean survival 14 d versus 9 d, respectively). Inhibition reduced the production of the cytokines interleukin (IL)-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, TNF-α, and IFN-γ and the infiltration of CD3+ lymphocytes into grafts. Furthermore, DNA-PKcs inhibition reduced the number of CD19+ B cells and CD19+ CD138+ plasma cells coinciding with a significant reduction in donor-specific antibodies. At a molecular level, we determined that the immunosuppressive effects of DNA-PKcs inhibition were mediated, in part, via inhibition of nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells signaling through reduced expression of the p65 subunit. CONCLUSIONS: Our data confirm that DNA-PKcs contributes to allogeneic graft rejection and highlight a novel immunologic function for DNA-PKcs in the regulation of nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells and concomitant cytokine production.

Abstract Objective. To determine the association between perceived exertion (RPE) and physiological variables and to determine the predictive factors of RPE during submaximal and maximal exertion in older adults. Method. Older adults from Kansas (n = 100) and Costa Rica (n = 79) performed a submaximal and maximal stress test. RPE, education level and a total score of cognitive function (CFTS) were collected. Correlation and multiple regression analyses were computed using RPE as the criterion variable and oxygen consumption (VO2), respiratory exchange ratio (RER), CFTS and education level as predictors. Results. There was a significant correlation between VEP and RER (r = 0.22, p = 0.029) at maximal exertion. The RPE predictors for women were VO2, RER, and CFTS at different stages of the test. For men, VEP was predicted by RER, education level, and VO2 at different stages. Conclusion. Metabolic and physiological variables predicted RPE in older adults. Age, cognition, and heart rate were unrelated to RPE at maximal exertion, and RER predicted RPE scores during submaximal and maximal exertion.


Resumen Objetivo. Determinar la asociación entre el esfuerzo percibido (VEP) y variables fisiológicas y determinar los factores predictivos de VEP durante el esfuerzo submáximo y máximo en adultos mayores. Método. Adultos mayores de Kansas (n = 100) y Costa Rica (n = 79) realizaron una prueba de esfuerzo submáxima y máxima. Se recopiló la VEP, nivel de educación y una puntuación total de la función cognitiva (PTFC). Se usaron análisis de correlación y regresión múltiple utilizando VEP como variable criterio y el consumo de oxígeno (VO2), tasa de intercambio respiratorio (RER), PTFC y nivel de educación como predictores. Resultados. Se encontró una correlación significativa entre la VEP y la RER (r = 0.22, p = 0.029) en el esfuerzo máximo. Los predictores de VEP para las mujeres fueron VO2, RER y PTFC en diferentes etapas de la prueba. Para los hombres, la VEP fue predicha por RER, nivel de educación y VO2 en diferentes etapas. Conclusión. Las variables metabólicas y fisiológicas predijeron los valores de VEP en adultos mayores. La edad, la cognición y la FC no se relacionaron con la VEP en el esfuerzo máximo y la RER predijo las puntuaciones de la VEP durante el esfuerzo submáximo y máximo.

Os preditores de VEP para as mulheres foram VO2, RER e PTFC em diferentes etapas da prova. Para os homens, a VEP foi predita por RER, nível de educação e VO2 em diferentes etapas. Conclusão. As variáveis metabólicas e fisiológicas predisseram os valores de VEP em idosos. A idade, a cognição e a FC não estiveram relacionadas com a VEP no esforço máximo e a RER predizia as pontuações da VEP durante o esforço submáximo e máximo.

Human microbiome studies are increasingly incorporating macroecological approaches, such as community assembly, network analysis and functional redundancy to more fully characterize the microbiome. Such analyses have not been applied to ancient human microbiomes, preventing insights into human microbiome evolution. We address this issue by analysing published ancient microbiome datasets: coprolites from Rio Zape (n = 7; 700 CE Mexico) and historic dental calculus (n = 44; 1770-1855 CE, UK), as well as two novel dental calculus datasets: Maya (n = 7; 170 BCE-885 CE, Belize) and Nuragic Sardinians (n = 11; 1400-850 BCE, Italy). Periodontitis-associated bacteria (Treponema denticola, Fusobacterium nucleatum and Eubacterium saphenum) were identified as keystone taxa in the dental calculus datasets. Coprolite keystone taxa included known short-chain fatty acid producers (Eubacterium biforme, Phascolarctobacterium succinatutens) and potentially disease-associated bacteria (Escherichia, Brachyspira). Overlap in ecological profiles between ancient and modern microbiomes was indicated by similarity in functional response diversity profiles between contemporary hunter-gatherers and ancient coprolites, as well as parallels between ancient Maya, historic UK, and modern Spanish dental calculus; however, the ancient Nuragic dental calculus shows a distinct ecological structure. We detected key ecological signatures from ancient microbiome data, paving the way to expand understanding of human microbiome evolution.
