Introduction: Phytotherapy is based on the use of medicinal plants through different pharmaceutical formulations for therapeutic purposes. In Dentistry, phytotherapeutics have been the subject of studies due to their beneficial properties, as well as their biocompatibility, low cost, and easy accessibility. After an initial reading, followed by critical analysis with the application of established criteria, 50 references were selected. Development: Various plants are employed in phytotherapy, such as Aloe vera (aloe), Matricaria recutita (chamomile), Copaifera (copaiba), Punica granatum (pomegranate), Uncaria tomentosa (cat's claw), Malva sylvestris (mallow), Althaea officinalis (marshmallow), Myracrodruon urundeuva (Brazilian copaiba), Lippia sidoides (rosemary pepper), and Glycyrrhiza glabra (licorice). In Dentistry, research has shown satisfactory results for the treatment of oral cavity conditions, especially those with inflammatory and infectious characteristics, as well as accelerating healing. These findings suggest that phytotherapy is an effective, accessible treatment with minimal side effects. Final considerations: Based on the reviewed literature, phytotherapy appears to be a promising alternative in the treatment of oral conditions due to its notable healing, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory effects. However, more research with appropriate methodologies is necessary to establish safe and effective clinical protocols.

Introduction: Paresthesia is a neuropathy that affects sensory function. The Low-Level Laser (LLL), in turn, has analgesic, biostimulating and reparative properties. Purpose: Carry out a survey at the scientific literature on the general aspects and benefits of LLL in the therapeutic management of paresthesia in addition to identifying the classification and methods for obtaining a diagnosis of this condition. Materials and Methods: It was a narrative literature review through search in platforms PubMed, SciELO, LILACS and Google Schoolar. After crossing the descriptors with boolean operators and applying the inclusion/exclusion criteria, 26 articles were included in this study. Results: Paresthesia can be classified into neuropraxia, axonotmesis and neurotmesis, subdivided into Grades I to V. Its diagnostic can be carried out through subjective and objective tests. The LLL consists in a technological device with analgesic, anti-inflammatory and photobiomodulatory effects, which stimulates neural repair. Studies show that LLL in dosimetry at red and infrared wavelengths with intra and extra oral application and with more than one-week use exerts a positive modulatory effect on neural repair, with a progressive return of sensory activity. Furthermore, the studies show a wide variation in the number of application points, as well as the irradiation time and number of sessions, due to the extent and time of diagnosis of paresthesia. Final Considerations: Despite the high complexity of paresthesia, the LLL has beneficial effects through the return of partial or total sensitivity in addition being a device well tolerated by the body and minimally invasive.

Introduction: Angular cheilitis is a multifactorial lesion of essentially fungal character, which affects the labial commissures and clinically manifests itself through a characteristic pattern. In the elderly due to advanced age, the onset and persistence of angular cheilitis occurs due to loss of vertical dimension, edentulism, immunosuppression, increased skinfold, poorly adapted prostheses and reduced quality of life. Objective: To conduct a survey in the scientific literature about the clinical and microbiological aspects, etiological factors and treatment of angular cheilitis in elderly patients. Materials and methods: The PubMed, SciELO and LILACS databases were consulted, using the DeCS/MeSH descriptors in Portuguese and English: "idosos", "queilite" and "lesão"; "elderly", "cheilitis" and "lesion". After crossing with the Boolean operator AND, a survey and analysis was performed, with the inclusion of 21 studies. To deepen the theoretical foundation, 13 new references were added, totaling 34 studies. Results: Clinically, angular cheilitis manifests itself through fissures, erythemas, unilateral or bilateral crusts, accompanied by pain and itching. The presence of the microorganisms Candida albicans, Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes are common and hinder the therapeutic management of this condition. Among the various forms of treatment, we highlight the antimicrobial Photodynamic Therapy, use of hyaluronic acid, as well as local antimicrobials, especially antifungals. Final considerations: Because it presents a multifactorial aspect and involves different types of microorganisms, its therapeutic management is multimodal. Therefore, for an adequate treatment, it is necessary for the dentist to identify the clinical and microbiological characteristics, in addition to the etiological factors involved in the development of angular cheilitis.

Head and neck cancer (CCP) refers to the group of tumors that affect the larynx, nasal cavity, nasopharynx, oropharynx, oral cavity and salivary glands. Radiotherapy in patients with CCP represents a therapy for organ maintenance, through the destruction of malignant neoplastic cells. The aim of this study was to identify radiotherapy strategies applied to patients with CCP and their respective side effects in the oral cavity, and to investigate the main modalities used in health systems in Brazil. It was a narrative review of the literature with active search of electronic databases PUBMED, LILACS and SCIELO. After all stages of refinement, a total of 58 articles were included in this review. Radiotherapy has a prominent role in the treatment of CCP. However, because it is not a therapeutic method with high specificity, it results in adverse effects to treatment such as oral mucositis, trismus and salivary dysfunction, which end up reducing the quality of life of the patient. Among the main radiotherapeutic techniques used in Brazil, IMRT and VMAT are characterized as the most advanced forms of 3D therapy, providing equivalent doses for each area of the tumor sparing surrounding tissue areas that do not require irradiation. In addition to reduced toxicity, greater survival can be observed in patients treated with these techniques. One of the biggest current challenges in radiation therapy against CCP is the protection of healthy tissues. In this sense, the IMRT and VMAT present superiority in relation to the other techniques.

RESUMO

Dentistry plays a significant role in the supportive care of hospitalized children in Pediatric Intensive Care Units (PICUs) as these patients arrive in this environment with altered immune systems and compromised oral health. This paper aims to present an integrative literature review on the role of dentists in the hospital setting, particularly in the PICU, and discuss the challenges encountered in this environment. A free search was conducted on the electronic platforms PubMed, Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Sciences (Lilacs), and Virtual Health Library (BVS) from January to February 2023, with no defined publication period and including all types of studies. Health Science descriptors (DeCS/MeSH) were used in English and Portuguese, applying Boolean operators. According to the data collected, among the conditions requiring admission to the PICU, respiratory disorders, heart and kidney failure, neurological disorders, severe metabolic diseases, infections, injuries, traumas, near-drowning incidents, and post-operative care after complex surgeries stand out. Dental care in this environment reduce hospitalization time, costs, and improve the quality of life of pediatric patients. However, the integration of these professionals into the PICU is still limited. Dentists in the hospital setting optimize multidisciplinary work through protocol-based measures derived from studies conducted in adult patients in intensive care units. Due to the lack of robust evidence related to oral care practices in pediatric intensive care settings, further research is mandatory. (AU)

(AU)

RESUMO

Laser photobiomodulation (LPBM) has been shown to be one of the possible modulating agents of inflammation. Similarly, medicinal plants, such as chamomile (Matricaria recutita) are also used with the same purpose. To evaluate tissue repair in the dorsum of the tongue of rats under topical use of chamomile alone and in association with LPBM. Seventy-five male Wistar rats received a standardized wound on the dorsum of the tongue and were allocated into experimental groups: Control (G1), Chamomile Fluid extract (G2), Chamomile Infusion (G3), Laser (G4), Chamomile Infusion + Laser (G5). Euthanasia was done on days 3, 7, and 14 after surgery. Ulcers were evaluated and measured with a caliper. Sections stained with hematoxylin and eosin and Picrosirius Red allowed evaluation of edema, inflammatory infiltrate, cellularity, and re-epithelialization and characterization of total collagen. Histomorphometric analysis of the percentage of total collagen, the distance from the basal layer to the epithelial surface, and the thickness of the stratum corneum were performed. The G2 and G4 groups modulated the exudative and proliferative phases of inflammation, both clinically and histologically. The G3 and G5 groups did not show significant differences in relation to the G1 group in most of the evaluated parameters. Chamomile fluid extract and LPBM alone showed better clinical and histological responses for tissue repair than the association between these therapeutic modalities. There were differences in the parameters of clinical, histological, and histomorphometric patterns between the experimental groups of the present investigation. The LPBM proved to be superior in the performed analysis.

Supernumerary teeth are described as a kind of dental anomaly, determined by the teeth´s formation other than those belonging to the conventional dentition, which generally promote complications in the oral cavity. Several etiological factors may be related and, according to their location, they are classified into mesiodens, distomolar and paramolar. This study aims to present and describe the extraction of a paramolar supernumerary element in the maxillary region, as well as the surgical removal of the first molar with coronary destruction in the underlying region, through a case report. Patient E.M.J., female, 38 years old, ASA 1, sought dental care due to the main complaint of pain in the region of the upper left 1st molar. At the clinical and radiographic examination, a great coronal destruction of element 26 associated with a intraoral fistula was observed, in addition to the presence of a supernumerary paramolar tooth on the buccal side of tooth 26. The recommended treatment was the surgical removal of both elements and the patient evolved uneventfully in the post-operative. Thus, it can be concluded that the surgical removal of a supernumerary paramolar tooth and a dental unit with great coronary destruction due to a carious lesion proved to be a safe and effective alternative in the present case.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To systematically evaluate randomised controlled trials (RCTs) on whether adjuvant application of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) through the technique of irradiation in the external region of the periodontal pocket with optic-fibre tip offers benefits to scaling and root planning (SRP). METHODS: Five databases were searched by two independent reviewers according to pre-specified eligibility criteria up to April 2023. No restrictions regarding date of publication, language and minimum follow-up period were imposed. The Cochrane Collaboration's Risk of Bias tool (RoB 2.0) was used for quality appraisal and Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation for assessing the certainty of evidence. RESULTS: A total of 1388 publications were identified and reviewed for eligibility. Four of them fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The sample consisted of a total of 83 patients with periodontitis. In these, 330 periodontal sites were evaluated. The clinical findings of the majority of the included studies demonstrated that patients who received the association of aPDT + RAR with the protocol evaluated here, obtained clinical results similar to patients who received only the SRP alone. In none of the evaluated RCTs, clinical advantages were observed that would categorise this aPDT protocol as superior to conventional treatment. CONCLUSION: Applying aPDT after SRP with external irradiation of the periodontal pocket does not seem to result in any clinical benefit compared to the use of SRP alone in patients with periodontitis.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The search for treatments that accelerate the healing of lesions is of constant interest. Matricaria recutita (chamomile) is a plant with antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and healing properties, and antimicrobial Photodynamic Therapy (aPDT) eradicates microorganisms, which favors tissue repair. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the topical use of chamomile with or without aPDT on tissue repair in rats' tongues. METHODOLOGY: A total of 75 male Wistar rats underwent standardized ulceration on the dorsum of the tongue using a punch of 5 mm diameter and were randomly allocated into the following groups: control (G1), chamomile fluid extract (G2), chamomile infusion (G3), aPDT (G4), and chamomile infusion + aPDT (G5). On the 3rd, 7th, and 14th days postoperatively, euthanasia was performed, and the ulcers were measured using calipers. The presence of edema, inflammatory infiltrate, cellularity, re-epithelialization, and characterization of total collagen were evaluated using sections stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin and Red Sirius. Histomorphometry analyses of the percentage of total collagen, the distance from the basal layer to the epithelial surface, and the thickness of the stratum corneum were performed. Descriptive (absolute/relative frequencies and modes) and exploratory analyses were performed. The associations between the groups and the presence of ulcers were analyzed with Fisher's exact test. All analyses were performed using the R program and statistical significance was set at p=0.05. RESULTS: The G2 positively modulated the exudative and proliferative phases of repair, both clinically (p<0.0001) and histologically, whether in descriptive or inferential analyses (p<0.05). The G3 showed a significant difference in clinical parameters compared with G1 (p<0.0001). The G4 and G5 did not positively modulate tissue repair. CONCLUSION: The chamomile fluid extract showed better outcomes for tissue repair in the rat tongue.

RESUMO

Neglected tropical diseases, such as leishmaniasis, lead to serious limitations to the affected societies. In this work, a structure-activity relationship (SAR) study was developed with a series of quinoxaline derivatives, active against the promastigote forms of Leishmania amazonensis. As a result, a new quinoxaline derivative was designed and synthesized. In addition, a quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) model was obtained [pIC50 = - 1.51 - 0.96 (EHOMO) + 0.02 (PSA); N = 17, R2 = 0.980, R2Adj = 0.977, s = 0.103, and LOO-cv-R2 (Q2) = 0.971]. The activity of the new synthesized compound was estimated (pIC50 = 5.88) and compared with the experimental result (pIC50 = 5.70), which allowed to evaluate the good predictive capacity of the model.

RESUMO

Recurrent aphthous ulcer (RAU) is a common oral mucosal lesion with varied and etiopathogenesis. It presents with pain and clinically manifests as an oval-shaped lesion with regular borders surrounded by an erythematous halo and covered by pseudo membrane. Due to the uncertainty about the possible causative factors, there is a need for studies that seek a better understanding of its pathophysiology. In this context, this study aimed to discuss the etiopathogenesis and clinical aspects of RAU. It was a descriptive study characterized as a narrative literature review. The inclusion criteria were studies relevant to the topic, written in Portuguese and English, without a time limit. The search was conducted between December 2022 and July 2023, through active searching in the Pubmed, LILACS, and SciELO platforms, as well as grey literature from Google Scholar and secondary free search. The Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCS/MeSH) were crossed using a Boolean operator, namely "aphthous ulcers" AND "predisposing factors." RAU has a multifactorial etiopathogenesis and may be associated with immunological, hereditary, nutritional, dietary, psycho-emotional, hormonal, and local trauma factors, although its relationship with microorganisms is controversial. Clinically, it is classified based on its morphology and clinical course. Morphologically, it is classified into minor, major, and herpetiform types, with the minor form being the most common. Therefore, RAU is a frequent oral mucosal lesion, with the minor form being the most prevalent, and despite its uncertain etiopathogenesis, studies indicate that immunological, traumatic, hereditary, hormonal, nutritional, and psycho-social factors are directly related to its development. (AU)

Fatigue is a reversible change in biological, physical and psychic functions, resulting from the imbalance of the organism. In patients with head and neck cancer (HNC), fatigue has been cited as one of the most frequent symptoms, especially in individuals with metastasis. It can significantly limit daily activities in order to be considered as a chronic condition, in particular, when associated with painful symptoms. The objective of this studt was to report the occurrence of fatigue and pain in patients with HNC. This was a series of prospective clinical cases describing the clinical history of four patients with HNC submitted to radio chemotherapeutic treatment, users of a public oncology service. To assess the degree of fatigue, the Brief Fatigue Inventory questionnaire was applied at five different moments during the antineoplastic treatment and pain analysis, an analog pain scale was used. The analysis of the questionnaires showed that fatigue was a frequent complaint and intensified with the advance of antineoplastic therapy. Its occurrence was also related to the difficulty performing daily activities. Painful symptomatology has been reported by patients to varying degrees. The occurrence of fatigue and pain in patients with HNC presents variability due to the individual's own experience, reflected by their socioeconomic and cultural context and their personal perception of the illness process.(AU)

Oral candidiasis is a fungal infection and its predominant strain is Candida albicans. This fungus is found in different mucous membranes of the organism and when there is an imbalance in the local microbiota, multiple lesions are manifested that can evolve into severe clinical conditions. It has a high frequency in immunosuppressed patients and under prolonged use of antibiotics and corticosteroids, and its standard treatment is based on the use of azole and polyene compounds. However, due to the possible cytotoxicity of these drugs associated with the resistance of microorganisms, there is a growing search for alternative therapies, which includes the use of herbal medicines. The present study aimed to present the use of tea tree essential oil or Tea Tree Oil (TTO) in the management of fungal infections in the oral cavity. The methodology was based on the initial search for articles in electronic databases: National Library of Medicine (PubMed), Virtual Health Library (BVS) and Google Scholar gray literature, using the crossing of the DeCS/MeSH descriptors "melaleuca oil" AND "oral thrush". In order to complement the theoretical foundation, institutional sites were used, in addition to the free search through the initially selected references. A total of 20 studies were included and the results demonstrated a satisfactory effect of TTO oil in the prevention and treatment of oral candidiasis in strains of Candida albicans with experimental studies in animal models. TTO proved to be effective in the management of oral candidiasis in animals, however, controlled clinical trials are needed to obtain effective and safe dosages for the patient.

Traumatic ulcers represent a benign and recurrent condition that affects the oral cavity, varying in size and dimension. There are numerous therapies that can be used to promote analgesia and/or tissue repair. Laser photobiomodulation (FBML) has gained space in the management of these lesions, as it is a minimally invasive device that is well tolerated by the body, in addition to acting in biostimulation, which confers analgesic, anti-inflammatory and healing effects. Thus, the study aims to evaluate the therapeutic application of FBML in traumatic ulcers in the oral cavity. This was an integrative literature review, based on the research of scientific articles from the last nine years, carried out on the LILACS, BVS, SciELO, PubMed, and Google Scholar platforms, using the intersection of Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCS) and employing the use of the Boolean operator "AND". Additionally, the free search was carried out with a view to complementing the theoretical foundation. A total of seven articles were included in this integrative review, which included studies in humans and in an animal model. All included studies showed positive results with the use of FBML, which demonstrated a beneficial effect through one or two sessions, inducing the healing process, improving pain symptoms and inflammation. FBML was able to improve the clinical and histological picture of traumatic ulcers in the oral cavity, by modulating the perception of pain and inflammation, accelerating healing and consequent regression of the lesions.

RESUMO

Chemotherapy for cancer treatment offers the possibility of eradicating neoplastic cells, however, its use can result in systemic and oral adverse effects, with emphasis on the qualitative-quantitative modification of saliva. To evaluate the stimulated salivary flow rate (SFR) in patients undergoing chemotherapy for treatment of solid malignancies. This was a cross-sectional study with twenty patients diagnosed with solid tumors undergoing chemotherapy with cytotoxic drugs. Subjects were submitted to stimulated sialometry in the 1st cycle of chemotherapy (baseline, 7th day and 14th day). Additionally, sociodemographic data regarding these patients were collected in a standardized questionnaire. Descriptive and inferential statistical analysis were performed, with a significance level of p<0.05. There was a predominance of women (75%) aged over 40 years old (90%). The most prevalent tumor location was breast (55%), followed by ovaries (15%), and the most used drug was cyclophosphamide (50%). In the sample, no statistically significant result was observed with regard to SFR (p>0.05) in the studied periods. The data suggest that the 1st cycle of chemotherapy was not able to induce significant changes in the SFR. New studies need to be performed for the prospective identification of potential changes in salivary parameters.(AU)

BACKGROUND:  The Adequate Childbirth Project (PPA) is a quality improvement project that aims to enhance normal delivery and reduce cesarean sections with no clinical indication in the Brazilian supplementary health care system. This study aims to analyze the care model of the first postpartum hour in hospitals that participated in the PPA. METHODS: Qualitative analysis based on the narrative of 102 women attended at two hospitals participating in the evaluative "Healthy Birth" research that analyzed the degree of implementation and the effects of the PPA. We assessed three practices within the first hour after delivery: skin-to-skin contact, breastfeeding and appropriate clamping of the umbilical cord. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews by telephone and submitted to thematic content analysis. RESULTS: The categories that emerged from the analysis of the results were "Dimension of time and care expressed in the lived experience" and "Interferences in care in the first hour of life". In the first category, women reported that in the first hour after delivery the newborn was placed on the mother's chest, but the length of time of the newborn's stay in skin-to-skin contact was less than one hour. This experience, even in a shorter period of time, was said to be positive by the women interviewed. Two barriers were observed: interruption of skin-to-skin contact for neonatal care and the transfer to the recovery room, both separating baby from mother without observing the duration of the "golden hour". It was identified that a process of improvement of the quality of care for childbirth is underway, with a gradual incorporation of recommended practices for care in newborn's first hour of life. CONCLUSIONS: Women reported access to the three care practices at two hospitals participating in the PPA quality improvement project. All practices were valued by women as a positive experience and should be promoted. Information during antenatal care to increase women´s autonomy, review of hospital practices to reduce barriers, and support from health care providers during the first hour after birth are needed to improve the implementation of these practices and access to their health benefits.

This study aims to analyze the care model of the first postpartum hour offered by two hospitals participating in the Adequate Childbirth Project (PPA), a quality improvement project to enhance normal delivery and reduce unnecessary cesarean sections in Brazilian private hospital. It is a qualitative analysis, based on the narrative of 102 women attended at two hospitals participating in the PPA. Categories that emerged from the analysis: "First hour; dimension of time and care expressed in the lived experience" and "Interferences in care in the first hour of life". Most women expressed a chronological time of skin-to-skin contact far from the ideal recommended in the first postpartum hour; however, they valued the experience and its meaning. Two barriers were observed in this care process: the interruption of skin-to-skin contact for neonatal care and the transfer to the recovery room, without observing the duration of the "golden hour". We can conclude that women evaluated the service positively, with indications that point to the sustainability of the PPA. Information during antenatal care to increase women´s autonomy are needed to improve the implementation of these practices and access to their health benefits.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: In Brazil, childbirth practices are strongly marked by surgical events and particularly in the private sector cesarean sections reach rates above 80%. The National Supplementary Health Agency proposed the Adequate Childbirth Project (PPA), a quality improvement project developed at Brazilian hospitals with the aim of changing the current model of childbirth care and reducing unnecessary cesarean sections. The objective of this study is to assess how the participation of women in the process of improving quality childbirth care occurred in two hospitals participating in the PPA. METHOD: Qualitative study, based on interviews with 102 women attended at two hospitals that took part in the first and second stages of the "Healthy Birth", an evaluative hospital-based research, conducted in 2017-2018, that assessed the degree of implementation and the effects of PPA. After thematic content analysis, supported by MaxQda software, three categories emerged: (1) how women gathered knowledge about the PPA, (2) how women perceived it, and (3) which are their suggestions for the PPA improvement. RESULTS: The PPA was unknown to most women before delivery. A polysemy of terms, including adequate childbirth, promotes recognition of the "new" model of care. Visits to the maternity hospital and antenatal care groups for pregnant women are opportunities for contacts that change the perception of what childbirth can be. Women have expectations of a relationship with maternity that is not limited to the moment of delivery. The listening channels established between hospitals and women are fragile and not systematized. By increasing the supply of listening spaces, one can also increase the request to leave their suggestions and contributions, and thus gain more allies in improving the project. Women are not yet included as PPA agents and their voices are silenced. CONCLUSIONS: Women's participation to improve childbirth care is relevant and necessary. The women's voice in the PPA is still incipient, and maternity hospitals and health plan operators should create strategies to insert and engage them. Women's voices should be listened to not only during but also before and after childbirth.

AND Facial Rejuvenation AND Skin Laxity Treatment".

Introduction: The increase in average life expectancy leads the population to seek, with greater frequency, aesthetic treatments aimed at rejuvenating the face and neck. Microfocused ultrasound (MFU) is described as a non-invasive treatment option for facial sagging and aging. Objective: To review the scientific literature regarding the use of MFU in the process of facial rejuvenation and correction of sagging skin. Methodology: This is a narrative review of the literature, based on the search for scientific articles in the PubMed and Virtual Health Library databases carried out during the month of March 2022, using the following search strategy: "Microfocused Ultrasound AND Facial Rejuvenation AND Skin Laxity Treatment". A total of 19 manuscripts were included in a qualitative synthesis. Development: MFU can be applied to the subcutaneous tissue, producing small points of thermal coagulation within the middle to deep reticular layer of the dermis and subdermis. The application of heat to these discrete points of thermal coagulation causes collagen neosynthesis and consequent skin tightening. Recent studies have shown promising results regarding the application of MFU in regions of the nasolabial sulcus, jaw line, eyebrows, infraorbital region, lower eyelid and zygomatic-buccal retention ligaments. Final considerations: MFU has been shown to be a safe technique, being considered effective, non-invasive, well tolerated by patients and viable for clinical medical and dental practice.

RESUMO

AIMS: To identify the main types of oral lesions associated with psoriasis. METHODS AND RESULTS: It was a systematic review, based on a search performed in the PubMed/Medline, and Scielo databases, and an associated manual search. Descriptors were selected from DeCs/MeSH and the PICOS strategy (population, intervention, comparison, outcomes, and study design) was applied. Randomized clinical trials and retrospective and prospective studies published from 2000 to 2022 were included, according to the PRISMA parameters (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis), registered in the PROSPERO platform. The STROBE quality scale (Strengthening the Reporting of Observational studies in Epidemiology) was also used. One hundred fourteen articles were identified using the search strategy, and nine articles were found in the manual search. Of the sixty-six preselected articles, seven were included in the study. Although it was not possible to identify a specific oral lesion associated with psoriasis, there was a greater occurrence of geographic tongue, fissured tongue, and Candida sp. infection CONCLUSION: Evidence shows that although patients with psoriasis may exhibit lesions in the oral mucosa, they are not specific to this condition. Further epidemiological studies are needed to address the association of psoriasis with possible changes in the oral mucosa.
