RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The inappropriate use of pesticides including fungicides creates severe biological hazards that can endanger fish health and impede sustainable aquaculture. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the negative impacts of metiram (MET), a fungicide on the health status of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) for a 96-hour duration as an acute exposure in a static renewal system. METHODS: Three hundred fish (average body weight: 37.50 ± 0.22 g) were assigned into six groups (50 fish/group) with five replicates (10 fish/replicate). Fish were exposed to various six concentrations (0, 1.5, 3, 4.5, 6, and 7.5 mg/L) of MET as a water exposure to for 96-hour without water exchange. The fish's behavior, clinical signs, and mortalities were documented every day of the exposure period. Additionally, MET's impact on blood profile, stress biomarkers, hepato-renal functions, immune-antioxidant status, and brain biomarker were closely monitored. RESULTS: The lethal concentration (LC50) of MET estimated using Finney's probit technique was 3.77 mg/L. The fish's behavior was severely impacted by acute MET exposure, as clear by an increase in surfacing, loss of equilibrium, unusual swimming, laterality, abnormal movement, and a decline in aggressive behaviors. The survivability and hematological indices (white and red blood cell count, differential white blood cell count, hematocrit value, and hemoglobin) were significantly reduced in a concentration-dependent manner following MET exposure. Acute exposure to MET (1.5-7.5 mg/L) incrementally increased stress biomarkers (nor-epinephrine, cortisol, and glucose), lipid peroxides (malondialdehyde), and brain oxidative DNA damage biomarker (8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine). A hepato-renal dysfunction by MET exposure (4.5-7.5 mg/L) was evidenced by the significant increase in the alanine and aspartate aminotransferases and creatinine values. Moreover, a substantial decline in the immune parameters (lysozyme, complement 3, serum bactericidal activity, and antiprotease activity) and antioxidant variables (total antioxidant capacity, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione peroxidase) resulted from acute MET exposure. CONCLUSION: According to these findings, the 96-hour LC50 of MET in Nile tilapia was 3.77 mg/L. MET exposure triggered toxicity in Nile tilapia, as seen by alterations in fish neuro-behaviors, immune-antioxidant status, hepato-renal functioning, and signifying physiological disturbances. This study emphasizes the potential ecological dangers provoked by MET as an environmental contaminant to aquatic systems. However, the long-term MET exposure is still needed to be investigated.

RESUMO

Vanadium dioxide (VO2) stands out for its versatility in numerous applications, thanks to its unique reversible insulator-to-metal phase transition. This transition can be initiated by various stimuli, leading to significant alterations in the material's characteristics, including its resistivity and optical properties. As the interest in the material is growing year by year, the purpose of this review is to explore the trends and current state of progress on some of the applications proposed for VO2 in the field of sensors and actuators using literature review methods. Some key applications identified are resistive sensors such as strain, temperature, light, gas concentration, and thermal fluid flow sensors for microfluidics and mechanical microactuators. Several critical challenges have been recognized in the field, including the expanded investigation of VO2-based applications across multiple domains, exploring various methods to enhance device performance such as modifying the phase transition temperature, advancing the fabrication techniques for VO2 structures, and developing innovative modelling approaches. Current research in the field shows a variety of different sensors, actuators, and material combinations, leading to different sensor and actuator performance input ranges and output sensitivities.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Pseudomonas putida is a pathogenic bacterium that induces great losses in fishes, including Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Currently, the application of nanomaterials in aquaculture practices has gained more success as it endows promising results in therapies compared to traditional protocols. OBJECTIVE: Therefore, the current perspective is considered the first report to assess the anti-bacterial efficacy of titanium dioxide nanogel (TDNG) against Pseudomonas putida (P. putida) in Nile tilapia. METHODS: The fish (n = 200; average body weight: 47.50±1.32 g) were allocated into four random groups (control, TDNG, P. putida, and TDNG + P. putida), where 0.9 mg/L of TDNG was applied as bath treatment for ten days. RESULTS: Outcomes revealed that P. putida infection caused ethological alterations (surfacing, abnormal movement, and aggression) and depression of immune-antioxidant variables (complement 3, lysozyme activity, total antioxidant capacity, superoxide dismutase, and reduced glutathione content). Additionally, a substantial elevation in hepatorenal biomarkers (aspartate and alanine aminotransferases and creatinine) with clear histopathological changes and immuno-histochemical alterations (very weak BCL-2 and potent caspase-3 immuno-expressions) were seen. Surprisingly, treating P. putida-infected fish with TDNG improved these variables and obvious restoration of the tissue architectures. CONCLUSION: Overall, this report encompasses the key role of TDNG as an anti-bacterial agent for controlling P. putida infection and improving the health status of Nile tilapia.

RESUMO

Chalcones are interesting anticancer drug candidates which have attracted much interest due to their unique structure and their extensive biological activity. Various functional modifications in chalcones have been reported, along with their pharmacological properties. In the current study, novel chalcone derivatives with the chemical base of tetrahydro-[1,2,4]triazolo[3,4-a]isoquinolin-3-yl)-3-arylprop-2-en-1-one were synthesized, and the structure of their molecules was confirmed through NMR spectroscopy. The antitumor activity of these newly synthesized chalcone derivatives was tested on mouse (Luc-4T1) and human (MDA-MB-231) breast cancer cell lines. The antiproliferative effect was evaluated through SRB screening and the MTT assay after 48 h of treatment at different concentrations. Interestingly, among the tested chalcone derivatives, chalcone analogues with a methoxy group were found to have significant anticancer activity and displayed gradient-dependent inhibition against breast cancer cell proliferation. The anticancer properties of these unique analogues were examined further by cytometric analysis of the cell cycle, quantitative PCR, and the caspases-Glo 3/7 assay. Chalcone methoxy derivatives showed the capability of cell cycle arrest and increased Bax/Bcl2 mRNA ratios as well as caspases 3/7 activity. The molecular docking analysis suggests that these chalcone methoxy derivatives may inhibit anti-apoptotic proteins, particularly cIAP1, BCL2, and EGFRK proteins. In conclusion, our findings confirm that chalcone methoxy derivatives could be considered to be potent drug candidates against breast cancer.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study sought to investigate the acceptance rate and associated factors of COVID-19 vaccines among dentists and dental students in seven countries. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A structured questionnaire prepared and guided by the report of the SAGE Working Group on Vaccine Hesitancy was distributed among groups of dentists and dental students in seven countries across four continents. RESULTS: A total of 1527 subjects (850 dentists and 677 dental students) participated in this survey. Although 72.5% of the respondents reported their intention to accept COVID-19 vaccines (dentists: 74.4%, dental students: 70.2%), there was a significant difference in agreement between dentists/dental students across countries; generally, respondents in upper-middle-, and high-income countries (UM-HICs) showed significantly higher acceptance rates compared to those in low- and lower-middle income countries (L-LMICs). Potential predictors of higher vaccine acceptance included being a dentist, being free of comorbidity, being well-informed about COVID-19 vaccines, having better knowledge about COVID-19 complications, having anxiety about COVID-19 infection, having no concerns about the side effects of the produced vaccines and being a resident of an UM-HIC. CONCLUSION: The results of our survey indicate a relatively good acceptance rate of COVID-19 among the surveyed dentists and dental students. However, dentists and dental students in L-LMICs showed significantly lower vaccine acceptance rates and trust in COVID-19 vaccines compared to their counterparts in UM-HICs. Our results provide important information to policymakers, highlighting the need for implementation of country-specific vaccine promotion strategies, with special focus on L-LMICs.

RESUMO

The potential effects of anthocyanin-rich roselle, Hibiscus sabdariffa L. extract (ARRE) on the growth, carcass traits, intestinal histomorphology, breast muscle composition, blood biochemical parameters, antioxidant activity, and immune status of broiler chickens were evaluated. In the present study, Hibiscus acidified ethanolic extract was reported to have a total anthocyanin content of about 359.3 mg cyanidin 3-glucoside/100 g DW, total polyphenol concentration (TPC) of about 598 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/100 g DW, and total flavonoids (TFs) of about 100 mg quercetin equivalent (QE)/100 g DW. Two-hundred-fifty one-day-old chicks (Ross 308 broiler) (87.85 gm ± 0.32) were randomly allotted to five experimental groups and fed on basal diets supplemented with five levels of ARRE: 0, 50, 100, 200, and 400 mg Kg-1 for 35 days. Dietary ARRE addition did not improve the birds' growth and carcass traits. Supplemental ARRE increased the n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) (ω-3) percentage in the breast muscle. Dietary ARRE increased the villous height, and the ARRE100 group raised the villus height to crypt depth ratio. Dietary ARRE increased the immunoexpression of immunoglobulin G (IgG) in the spleen. The serum thyroxine hormone (T4) level was higher in the ARRE200 group. The serum growth hormone level was increased by ARRE addition in a level-dependent manner. According to the broken-line regression analysis, the optimum inclusion level of ARRE was 280 mg Kg-1. All levels of supplemental ARRE decreased the serum triglyceride level. The serum total antioxidant capacity (TAC) was increased in the ARRE100-ARRE400 groups, the serum superoxide dismutase (SOD) level was increased in the ARRE200 group, and the serum malondialdehyde (MDA) level was decreased by increasing the ARRE level. Supplemental ARRE significantly increased the serum levels of lysozymes and IL10. The serum complement 3 (C3) level was increased in ARRE200 and ARRE400 groups. It can be concluded that dietary ARRE addition had many beneficial effects represented by the improvements in the bird's metabolic functions, blood biochemistry, intestinal morphology, antioxidant activity, immune status, and higher ω-3 content in the breast muscles. However, it had no improving effect on the birds' growth.

RESUMO

The application of computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology in dentistry has rapidly expanded. This survey aimed to investigate attitudes and current practice of dentists in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia regarding chair-side CAD/CAM technology. An online questionnaire was prepared and sent to a convenience sample of dentists in Riyadh. Questions related to practice aspects of chair-side CAD/CAM system, attitudes and training were presented. A total of 114 questionnaires were completed (77.6% response rate). Study population comprised dentists of a wide range of clinical experience who are working in the various regions of Riyadh city, Saudi Arabia. Of the participants, 27.2% indicated the presence of a chair-side CAD/CAM system at their current workplace and 57% used the chair-side CAD/CAM in the fabrication of dental crowns. The vast majority of participants (81%) believe that the overall quality of chair-side CAD/CAM restorations is at least as good as those fabricated by a lab technician or much better. Most responding dentists considered the chair-side CAD/CAM system as important in terms of time saving, boosting the number of visiting patients and income improvement. The willingness to dedicate the time and effort to learn the chair-side CAD/CAM technology was apparent amid a high proportion of dentists (75.4%). The findings of this pilot survey reflect broad satisfaction and positive attitude among the surveyed dentists towards use and outcome of chair-side CAD/CAM technology in the dental clinical practice. It seems that the CAD/CAM technology has infiltrated into the workflow of Saudi dental practices with speculations of growing implementation among the wider sector of dental practitioners in the future.

RESUMO

Objectives: Even though several effective vaccines are available to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, wide disparities in vaccine distribution, and vaccine acceptance rates between high- and low-income countries appear to be major threats toward achieving population immunity. Our global descriptive study aims to inform policymakers on factors affecting COVID-19 vaccine acceptance among healthcare workers (HCWs) in 12 countries, based on income index. We also looked for possible predictors of vaccine acceptance among the study sample. Methods: A structured questionnaire prepared after consultation with experts in the field and guided by the "Report of the SAGE working group on vaccine hesitancy" was administered among 2,953 HCWs. Upon obtaining informed consent, apart from demographic information, we collected information on trust in vaccines and health authorities, and agreement to accept a COVID-19 vaccine. Results: Although 69% of the participants agreed to accept a vaccine, there was high heterogeneity in agreement between HCWs in low and lower-middle income countries (L-LMICs) and upper-middle- and high-income countries (UM-HICs), with acceptance rates of 62 and 75%, respectively. Potential predictors of vaccine acceptance included being male, 50 years of age or older, resident of an UM-HIC, updating self about COVID-19 vaccines, greater disease severity perception, greater anxiety of contracting COVID-19 and concern about side effects of vaccines. Conclusions: COVID-19 vaccine acceptance among HCWs in L-LMICs was considerably low as compared to those from UM-HICs. The lowest vaccine acceptance rates were among HCWs from the African continent. This underlines the need for the implementation of country-specific vaccine promotion strategies, with special focus on increasing vaccine supply in L-LMICs.

RESUMO

AIM AND OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the adhesion of Candida albicans (CA) to the surface of the denture base using two different types of resins after exposure to denture adhesives (DAs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-five samples of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and 25 samples of urethane dimethacrylate (UDMA) (10 mm × 10 mm × 2 mm) were prepared and allocated to 10 groups (five samples in each group). For each type of denture base materials, four test groups were immersed for 30 days in four commercially available DAs in addition to water as control group. Specimens were then in vitro evaluated for CA adhesion using light microscopy under × 1,000 magnification. RESULTS: The results showed that the mean number of CA per specimen in the adhesive-exposed groups was higher than that in the control group for both UDMA and PMMA resins. However, this difference was not statistically significant. No association between the type of denture base material and Candida count was identified following immersion in different types of DA and distilled water (p >0.05). Candida count was not associated with the type of DA when UDMA specimens were compared (p >0.05). PMMA resin specimens that were immersed in Corega cream showed significantly higher counts of Candida compared to control specimens that were immersed in distilled water (p <0.05). CONCLUSION: The study found no association between the type of denture base materials and CA adhesion. No clear impact was identified for the type of DA on CA adhesion to acrylic denture bases. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Using DAs would likely not increase the incidence of denture stomatitis in completely edentulous patients.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic inflammatory disease. There is no standard treatment modality for OLP. Recently, photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been advocated as a new treatment modality for OLP. AIM: The aim of the present study is to compare the effect of PDT using methylene blue (MB) as a photosensitizer to the effect of topical corticosteroids in the treatment of erosive OLP lesions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our study included 20 patients with erosive OLP. Patients were divided into two groups. The study group included 10 patents which received MB-PDT. Patients were instructed to use MB as mouth path for 5 min. After 10 min, we applied focal red light on OLP lesions (wavelength 660 nm, Intensity 100-130 m W/cm2) for 2 min. The PDT was applied twice a week for four weeks. In the control group, 10 patients were instructed to apply topical betamethasone valerate ointment 100 mg on OLP lesion three times per day for four weeks. Subjective, objective scores and lesion size were recorded at time zero, after 2 weeks and after 4 weeks from the start of treatments. RESULTS: Both groups showed statistically significant differences between time zero and the 4th week of treatment in subjective, objective scores and the area of the lesions. MB-PDT showed a higher degree of improvement than topical corticosteroids between time zero and the 4th week of treatment. CONCLUSION: Photodynamic therapy can be used as a treatment for erosive OLP. PDT offers improvement of OLP subjective and objective scores without major side effects.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study aimed to assess dentists' views of the utility of an unrestored shortened dental arch (SDA) compared to the utility of various prosthetic treatment options. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 142 dentists working at four sites in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, were interviewed and presented with 18 scenarios for patients of different ages with SDAs that lost molar teeth. Participants were asked to indicate on a standardized visual analog scale (VAS) how they would value the health of the patient's mouth if the SDAs were left unrestored or restored with five prosthetic dental restorations. RESULTS: With a utility value of 0.0 representing the worst possible health state for a mouth and 1.0 representing the best, dentists' mean utility value for unrestored SDAs was 0.43 (standard deviation [SD] = 0.28). For implant-supported fixed dental prostheses (ISFDPs), cobalt-chromium removable partial dentures (RPDs), acrylic RPDs, cantilever conventional fixed dental prostheses (CFDPs), and cantilever resin-bonded fixed dental prostheses (RBFDPs), the mean utility values were 0.64 (SD = 0.27), 0.54 (SD = 0.20), 0.48 (SD = 0.20), 0.42 (SD = 0.28), and 0.39 (SD = 0.27), respectively. Neither patient age nor dentists' clinical experience had an impact on dentists' perceptions of the utility of unrestored SDAs and outcomes of this treatment concept (P > .01). CONCLUSION: Restoration of SDAs by ISFDPs received the highest utility value among the surveyed group of dentists. Although the assigned value for unrestored SDAs was low, this value was comparable to the value of SDAs that were restored by acrylic RPDs or cantilever FDPs of either type.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify reasons and influential factors for choosing dentistry as a career among dental students in Saudi Arabia. The preferred field of dental specialty following graduation will also be investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A questionnaire was developed and circulated among undergraduate dental students studying at a private dental college in Saudi Arabia. A list of 16 reasons that possibly influenced students' decision to study dentistry was presented and participants were invited to indicate on a 5-point Likert scale the extent each reason influenced their choice of dentistry as a career. The listed reasons were categorized into economic, professional, vocational, social and personal reasons. RESULTS: Totally, 788 out of 970 questionnaires were completed (response rate: 81%). Proportion of female students exceeded proportion of male students (59% and 41%, respectively) and most participants were Saudi students (73%). The top three influential factors on students' decision to study dentistry were "Dentistry is a prestigious profession," "I like to treat people and improve their appearance," and "I like working with people and caring for them." Variations were identified between male and female students and also between Saudi and non-Saudi students in the reasons to choose dentistry as a career. The vast majority of participants (94%) expressed a desire to follow a postgraduate study. Orthodontics and oral surgery were the most preferred dental specialties. CONCLUSION: The social and vocational reasons were the main factors that motivated this group of dental students to attend a dental program. Greater training opportunities should be planned to accommodate the speculated increasing demand for postgraduate dental education in Saudi Arabia.

RESUMO

Preparation, characterization, and stability evaluation of gold nanoparticles stabilized by ω-sulfonylated alkylsulfanylaniline have been described. The particle solution was obtained by the spontaneous reaction of HAuCl4 and ω-sulfonylated alkylsulfanylaniline in boiling water. It showed a deep red color, owing to surface plasmon resonance of the resulting gold nanoparticles. The size and shape of the nanoparticles were pH-dependent, and pH 8 was found to be the most suitable condition to prepare stable nanoparticles with an average size of 11.2 ± 5.9 nm. The resulting particle solution was stable for a wide range of pH (3-13) and in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) solution. The nanoparticles were storable as dried powder for at least two weeks, and were redispersible in water or PBS to give almost the same absorption spectra as the freshly prepared solution. Nanoparticle modification was achieved by simply adding thiol molecules to the particle solution.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of four commercially available denture adhesives (DAs) on surface roughness of two chemically different denture base materials. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty specimens of heat-cured polymethyl methacrylate, and another fifty specimens of light-cured urethane dimethacrylate were divided into five groups (n = 10), each was immersed in four prepared DAs (Corega Super Cream, Corega Ultra Powder, Olivafix Cream, Protefix Cream) as well as distilled water (control group). The mean surface roughness (R a) of the polished and unpolished surfaces of the specimens was recorded using profilometer device. T-test for paired observation was used to indicate any changes in surface roughness between the baseline and after 30 days of immersion in the DA. RESULTS: Almost all the tested DAs had no significant effect on the roughness of polished and unpolished surfaces of both denture base materials. The Corega super cream DA produced significant increase in the roughness of the polished surfaces of both types of acrylic specimens (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The majority of the investigated DAs appears not to affect the surface roughness of denture base materials. Only Corega super cream DA produced detectable increase in the roughness of polished surfaces of denture base specimens.

RESUMO

AIM: The aim of this study was to compare changes in marginal bone height around immediately loaded implants supporting a mandibular overdenture constructed according to the neutral zone technique with changes around overdentures constructed according to the conventional methods. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twelve completely edentulous male patients were randomly allocated to two equal groups of patients. Patients in the first group received conventionally constructed complete dentures and patients in the second group received complete dentures constructed using the neutral zone record. All the patients received two single-piece titanium implants placed bilaterally in the mandibular canine regions using flapless surgery, which were then immediately loaded by the dentures. Marginal bone height was radiographically evaluated at baseline and 6, 12, and 18 months after implant loading. RESULTS: There was a significant loss in marginal bone height around the supporting implants in each study group. However, no significant differences in marginal bone height were recorded between the study groups over the observation period (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Marginal bone height changes induced by overdentures constructed with neutral zone technique on immediately loaded implants are not different from those changes induced by overdentures constructed with a conventional method.
