BACKGROUND: Leprosy, caused by Mycobacterium leprae, is a public health problem in Brazil that affects peripheral nerves, resulting in physical disabilities. During host-pathogen interactions, the immune response determines leprosy outcomes from a localised (paucibacillary) form to a disseminated (multibacillary) form. The recognition of M. leprae involves the DC-SIGN receptor, which is present on the dendritic cells (DCs) and participates in immune activation. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the association of polymorphisms in the promoter region of the gene encoding DC-SIGN (CD209) and the clinical form of leprosy, and to investigate its functional effects. METHODS: The study population included 406 leprosy patients from an endemic area in Brazil [310 multibacillary (MB); 96 paucibacillary (PB)]. A functional evaluation based on the effects of the single nucleotide variant (SNV) associated with PB leprosy on the specific immune response was also performed. RESULTS: The GA genotype and the presence of the A allele of rs735240 (-939G>A) were associated with PB leprosy [OR: 2.09 (1.18-3.69) and 1.84 (1.07-3.14), respectively]. Carriers of the A allele showed reduced expression of CD209 and TGF-ß1 in leprosy lesions in comparison with individuals with GG genotype, in addition to a higher response to the Mitsuda test. CONCLUSION: These data suggest that rs735240 influences the immune response against M. leprae and clinical presentation of leprosy.

RESUMO

A concept of spin plasmon, a collective mode of spin-density, in strongly correlated electron systems has been proposed since the 1930s. It is expected to bridge between spintronics and plasmonics by strongly confining the photon energy in the subwavelength scale within single magnetic-domain to enable further miniaturizing devices. However, spin plasmon in strongly correlated electron systems is yet to be realized. Herein, we present a new spin correlated-plasmon at room temperature in novel Mott-like insulating highly oriented single-crystalline gold quantum-dots (HOSG-QDs). Interestingly, the spin correlated-plasmon is tunable from the infrared to visible, accompanied by spectral weight transfer yielding a large quantum absorption midgap state, disappearance of low-energy Drude response, and transparency. Supported with theoretical calculations, it occurs due to an interplay of surprisingly strong electron-electron correlations, s-p hybridization and quantum confinement in the s band. The first demonstration of the high sensitivity of spin correlated-plasmon in surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy is also presented.

Dirac fermions play a central role in the study of topological phases, for they can generate a variety of exotic states, such as Weyl semimetals and topological insulators. The control and manipulation of Dirac fermions constitute a fundamental step toward the realization of novel concepts of electronic devices and quantum computation. By means of Angle-Resolved Photo-Emission Spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments and ab initio simulations, here, we show that Dirac states can be effectively tuned by doping a transition metal sulfide, [Formula: see text], through Co/Ni substitution. The symmetry and chemical characteristics of this material, combined with the modification of the charge-transfer gap of [Formula: see text] across its phase diagram, lead to the formation of Dirac lines, whose position in k-space can be displaced along the [Formula: see text] symmetry direction and their form reshaped. Not only does the doping x tailor the location and shape of the Dirac bands, but it also controls the metal-insulator transition in the same compound, making [Formula: see text] a model system to functionalize Dirac materials by varying the strength of electron correlations.

High-performance piezoelectric materials are critical components for electromechanical sensors and actuators. For more than 60 years, the main strategy for obtaining large piezoelectric response has been to construct multiphase boundaries, where nanoscale domains with local structural and polar heterogeneity are formed, by tuning complex chemical compositions. We used a different strategy to emulate such local heterogeneity by forming nanopillar regions in perovskite oxide thin films. We obtained a giant effective piezoelectric coefficient [Formula: see text] of ~1098 picometers per volt with a high Curie temperature of ~450°C. Our lead-free composition of sodium-deficient sodium niobate contains only three elements (Na, Nb, and O). The formation of local heterogeneity with nanopillars in the perovskite structure could be the basis for a general approach to designing and optimizing various functional materials.

By combining bulk sensitive soft-x-ray angular-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations we explored the bulk electron states of WTe_{2}, a candidate type-II Weyl semimetal featuring a large nonsaturating magnetoresistance. Despite the layered geometry suggesting a two-dimensional electronic structure, we directly observe a three-dimensional electronic dispersion. We report a band dispersion in the reciprocal direction perpendicular to the layers, implying that electrons can also travel coherently when crossing from one layer to the other. The measured Fermi surface is characterized by two well-separated electron and hole pockets at either side of the Γ point, differently from previous more surface sensitive angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments that additionally found a pronounced quasiparticle weight at the zone center. Moreover, we observe a significant sensitivity of the bulk electronic structure of WTe_{2} around the Fermi level to electronic correlations and renormalizations due to self-energy effects, previously neglected in first-principles descriptions.

We report the study of anatase TiO2(001)-oriented thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition on LaAlO3(001). A combination of in situ and ex situ methods has been used to address both the origin of the Ti3+-localized states and their relationship with the structural and electronic properties on the surface and the subsurface. Localized in-gap states are analyzed using resonant X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and are related to the Ti3+ electronic configuration, homogeneously distributed over the entire film thickness. We find that an increase in the oxygen pressure corresponds to an increase in Ti3+ only in a well-defined range of deposition pressure; outside this range, Ti3+ and the strength of the in-gap states are reduced.

Rashba spin-orbit splitting in the magnetic materials opens up a new perspective in the field of spintronics. Here, we report a giant Rashba spin-orbit splitting on the PrGe [010] surface in the paramagnetic phase with Rashba coefficient α R = 5 eVÅ. We find that α R can be tuned in this system as a function of temperature at different magnetic phases. Rashba type spin polarized surface states originates due to the strong hybridization between Pr 4f states with the conduction electrons. Significant changes observed in the spin polarized surface states across the magnetic transitions are due to the competition between Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction and exchange interaction present in this system. Presence of Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction on the topological surface give rise to Saddle point singularity which leads to electron-like and hole-like Rashba spin split bands in the [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] directions, respectively. Supporting evidences of Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction have been obtained as anisotropic magnetoresistance with respect to field direction and first-order type hysteresis in the X-ray diffraction measurements. A giant negative magnetoresistance of 43% in the antiferromagnetic phase and tunable Rashba parameter with temperature makes this material a suitable candidate for application in the antiferromagnetic spintronic devices.

The behaviour of electrons and holes in a crystal lattice is a fundamental quantum phenomenon, accounting for a rich variety of material properties. Boosted by the remarkable electronic and physical properties of two-dimensional materials such as graphene and topological insulators, transition metal dichalcogenides have recently received renewed attention. In this context, the anomalous bulk properties of semimetallic WTe2 have attracted considerable interest. Here we report angle- and spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of WTe2 single crystals, through which we disentangle the role of W and Te atoms in the formation of the band structure and identify the interplay of charge, spin and orbital degrees of freedom. Supported by first-principles calculations and high-resolution surface topography, we reveal the existence of a layer-dependent behaviour. The balance of electron and hole states is found only when considering at least three Te-W-Te layers, showing that the behaviour of WTe2 is not strictly two dimensional.

Advances concerning the hosts' immune response to Mycobacterium leprae infection have focused on elucidating the immune pathomechanisms involved, with the hope that predictive diagnostic and prognostic parameters (biomarkers) for field use would emerge; however, improvements in our understanding of the immunologic responses to this complex disease have, to date, somewhat failed to provide the effective and robust methods for improving its predictive diagnosis in the field situation, particularly in those patients suffering from paucibacillary disease. In this contribution we have attempted to review some of the advances both in the immunology and immunopathology of leprosy, and also highlight the limited clusters of immune parameters that are now available. Most importantly, we point out the limitations that still prevail in the provision of effective biomarkers in the field situation for either: (1) the diagnosis of indeterminate disease, (2) predictive diagnosis of individuals developing reactional states, (3) monitoring efficacy of treatment, or (4) monitoring treatment of reactional states.

Studies on the interaction of monocyte-derived DCs (MO-DCs) using Mycobacterium leprae in leprosy patients are rare. The present study demonstrated that the differentiation of MOs to DCs was similar in all forms of leprosy compared to normal healthy individuals. In vitro stimulation of immature MO-DCs with sonicated M. leprae induced variable degrees of DC maturation as determined by the increased expression of HLA-DR, CD40, CD80 and CD86, but not CD83, in all studied groups. The production of different cytokines by the MO-DCs appeared similar in all of the studied groups under similar conditions. However, the production of interleukin (IL)-12p70 by MO-DCs from lepromatous (LL) leprosy patients after in vitro stimulation with M. lepraewas lower than tuberculoid leprosy patients and healthy individuals, even after CD40 ligation with CD40 ligand-transfected cells. The present cumulative findings suggest that the MO-DCs of LL patients are generally a weak producer of IL-12p70 despite the moderate activating properties ofM. leprae. These results may explain the poor M. leprae-specific cell-mediated immunity in the LL type of leprosy.

OBJECTIVES: To explore the patient experience of being diagnosed with leprosy and the support provided during this process in selected populations in Brazil. To understand the information needs of patients during diagnosis. To identify characteristics of patients with different diagnostic experiences. To add to the evidence base used for improving the diagnostic process for leprosy patients. DESIGN: A self-constructed questionnaire delivered to 116 participants, at three leprosy health centres, across three states in Brazil. RESULTS: Most participants felt under-informed during diagnosis; 68.1% wanted more information about leprosy. Nearly one-quarter of patients reported feeling unable to ask questions at diagnosis. Almost half of patients reported being worried about treatment, yet 43.3% reported not having the chance to talk about their concerns. Younger participants were significantly more likely to report feeling unable to ask questions and talk about their worries. The majority of participants (59.5%) reported not being given any written information to take away with them. 36.5% reported not being given advice about how to reduce the chance of other family members becoming ill with leprosy. Older males were most likely to be given this advice despite females being in most contact with family members in most cultures. CONCLUSIONS: It is recommended that patients are encouraged to ask questions and invited to talk about their concerns, particularly younger patients. It is recommended that a simple information leaflet be provided to all patients. These suggestions may require some financial input, more staff and longer consultations but should significantly improve the diagnostic process.

An equiatomic PrGe single crystal was grown by the Czochralski pulling method. The grown single crystal was found to have CrB-type orthorhombic crystal structure with the space group Cmcm (no. 63). Transport and magnetization data reveal large anisotropy in the electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and magnetization. PrGe was found to exhibit two consecutive magnetic orderings at 44 K and 41.5 K, respectively. The magnetic susceptibility measurement along the three principal directions in low applied fields revealed a cusp-like behaviour at 44 K while at 41.5 K a ferromagnetic-like increase was observed. The hysteretic behaviour in the magnetization measurement at 1.8 K confirmed the ferromagnetic nature of PrGe at low temperatures. The heat capacity data clearly revealed the bulk nature of two magnetic transitions by the presence of two sharp peaks attaining values exceeding 40 J K(-1) mol(-1) at the respective temperatures. The absence of a Schottky contribution in the magnetic part of the heat capacity indicates a quasi-ninefold degenerate J = 4 magnetic ground state in this system. The low temperature data of electrical resistivity and the magnetic part of the heat capacity show the existence of a gap in the spin-wave spectrum.

Single crystals of CeGe and its non-magnetic analog LaGe have been grown by the Czochralski method. The CeGe compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic FeB-type crystal structure with the space group Pnma (#62). The anisotropic magnetic properties have been investigated for well oriented single crystals by measuring the magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity and heat capacity. It has been found that CeGe orders antiferromagnetically at 10.5 K. Both transport and magnetic studies have revealed large anisotropy, reflecting the orthorhombic crystal structure. The magnetization data at 1.8 K reveal metamagnetic transitions along the [010] direction at 4.8 and 6.4 T and along the [100] direction at a critical field of 10.7 T, while the magnetization along the [001] direction increases linearly without any anomaly up to a field of 16 T. From the magnetic susceptibility and the magnetization measurements it has been found that the [010] direction is the easy axis of magnetization. The electrical resistivity along the three crystallographic directions exhibits an upturn at T(N), indicating superzone gap formation below T(N) in this compound. We have performed crystal electric field analysis on the magnetic susceptibility and the heat capacity data and found that the ground state is a doublet, and the energies of splitting from the ground state to the first and second excited doublet states were estimated to be 39 and 111 K, respectively.
