RESUMO

The electrochemical hydrogen production from water splitting is a promising strategy for obtaining new energy sources and replacing fossil fuels. In this study, nickel nanocones were first deposited on a nickel foam substrate using a direct current method. Then, a nickel-cobalt-manganese ternary alloy with a nanosheet morphology was deposited on the nanocones using a cyclic voltammetry method with different cycles and sweep rates. The results show that the sample synthesized in 3 cycles with a sweep rate of 10 mV s-1 exhibits the best electrocatalytic activity and requires -81, -121, and -214 mV overpotentials to reach 10, 20 and 100 mA cm-2 current densities, respectively. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy studies also improved the HER performance with the lowest charge transfer resistance among all of the synthesized electrodes. This study introduces an effective and facile method for the fabrication of highly active and stable electrocatalysts.

RESUMO

In this study, we developed and optimized a trivalent chromium coating electrodeposited on 304L stainless steel (SS) from a Cr-trivalent bath. The results reveal that the Cr coatings at all bath temperatures except for 80 °C showed clusters of polyhedral grains, however, the grain sizes decreased with an increase in bath temperature. Also, the coatings deposited at bath temperatures of 30, 50, and 60 °C experienced networks of cracks, which decreased in population density as temperature increased. However, the coatings deposited at bath temperatures of 70 and 80 °C were crack-free due to surface modification, confirmed by 3D profile results with an advanced power spectral density and a multi-Gaussian histogram analysis. The mechanical test results demonstrate that the adhesion and wear resistance of the Cr-coatings formed on the SS substrate significantly improved, with the optimal coefficient of friction of 0.18. Likewise, electrochemical behavior observations of the Cr coatings show that pitting resistance improved with the increase in bath temperature conditions, as shown in the pitting potential values which increased from 272.6 mV to 436.2 mV as bath temperature increases from 30 °C to 80 °C. From this study, it is proposed that the Cr-coatings deposited at a bath temperature of 80 °C presents the optimal coating performance concerning a combination of all the target qualities aimed, such as better tribological behavior and improved pitting resistance. Thus, enabling the establishment of an innovative method to overcome the conventional issues encountered in Cr electrodeposition of SSs.

RESUMO

The lateral talar dome osteochondral fracture has been described as shallow or wafer-shaped and is more likely to have an associated flake fracture than medial injuries. Displacement into the extracurricular space, however, is a rare occurrence. We present a case of ankle trauma with persistent pain and edema. A CT scan revealed a displaced osteochondral fracture of the lateral dome of the talus and an avulsion fracture of the tip of the medial malleolus. After appropriate dissection and exposure, the fragment was found below the skin, outside the ankle joint capsule. The fragment was fixed to the neck of the talus, and the deltoid ligament and anterior inferior tibiofibular ligament were repaired. After a one-year follow-up, full recovery was achieved without pain, stiffness, or osteonecrosis of the displaced fragment. Although the extra-articular displacement of lateral talar dome osteochondral fractures is rare, it should be considered when assessing ankle trauma.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in women, and medicinal plants can prevent and play an inhibitory role for cancer. This study aims to evaluate the anticancer effect of colchicum autumnale L. Corm on breast cancer cell models. METHODS: In this study, the alkaloid-rich extract was prepared using the percolation method and with methanol/water solvent (70:30). HFF2 normal cell line and MCF-7 breast cancer cell line were cultured in microplates (96 wells). Then cells were treated with concentrations of 62.5 to 2000 ng/ml of extract and concentrations of 62 to 1000 ng/ml of doxorubicin at regular intervals of 48 and 72 h, and the percentage of cell growth inhibition was calculated. Cytotoxicity of drugs was measured by the MTT assay method. IC50 values were calculated by Calcusyn software. Also, the P-value of < 0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS: Alkaloid-rich extract of Colchicum autumnale plant inhibited breast cancer cell growth (MCF-7). The IC50 parameter showed more cytotoxic effects of Colchicum autumnale plant extract on the MCF-7 cancer cell line than HFF2 normal cell line for 48 and 72 h. In addition, with higher concentrations of the extract, cytotoxicity, and growth inhibitory effect increased significantly and in comparison to the doxorubicin was almost the same as cytotoxic. CONCLUSION: This research provides a novel view into the development of new drugs for the treatment of cancer diseases. Colchicum autumnale plant extract had a significant cytotoxic effect like Doxorubicin drug on breast cancer cell line (MCF-7), which can alternatively treat and prevent breast cancer.

RESUMO

The seeds of Descurainia sophia (L.) Webb ex Prantl contain goitrogenic glucosinolates, such as gluconapin (3-butenyl glucosinolate). Because of the important role of iodine in the synthesis of thyroid hormones and the inhibitory activity of D. sophia on iodine uptake by the thyroid gland, this study aimed to determine the effects of D. sophia syrup on clinical and biochemical variables of thyrotoxicosis in hyperthyroid patients. In this randomized, double-blind trial, 10 newly diagnosed hyperthyroid female patients were randomly assigned to treatment with (1) methimazole (MMI) plus D. sophia capsules (350 mg/d) or (2) MMI plus placebo capsules. The primary outcomes were clinical and biochemical manifestations of hyperthyroidism after 60 days. Serum levels of FT3 and FT4 significantly decreased (5.9 ± 2.5 vs. 9.4 ± 5.9 and 29.1 ± 3.1 vs. 31.77 ± 3.7, respectively) and the serum thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) concentration significantly increased in the D. sophia group contrasted to the placebo group (4.7 ± 0.1 vs. 0.05 ± 0.02). Significant improvement in the thyrotoxicosis clinical symptoms was reported in the D. sophia group contrasted to the placebo group (p < .05). D. sophia can suppress plasma levels of FT3 and FT4 and may be useful as adjunctive therapy for hyperthyroidism.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a prevalent liver disease predisposing patients to life-threatening conditions, including cirrhosis. There is evidence that the incidence of NAFLD is related to the individuals' dietary patterns; however, it is still remaining unknown whether the inflammatory potential of various foods/dietary patterns can directly predict a higher incidence of NAFLD. METHODS: In this cross-sectional cohort study, we investigated the relationship between the inflammatory potential of various food items and the incidence/odds of NAFLD. We used data from Fasa PERSIAN Cohort Study comprising 10,035 individuals. To measure the inflammatory potential of diet, we used the dietary inflammatory index (DII®). Fatty liver index (FLI) was also calculated for each individual to identify the presence of NAFLD (cut-off = 60). RESULTS: Our findings showed that higher DII is significantly associated with increased incidence/odds of NAFLD (OR = 1.254, 95% CI: 1.178-1.334). Additionally, we found out that higher age, female gender, diabetes mellitus, hypertriglyceridemia, hypercholesterolemia, and hypertension are other predictors of developing NAFLD. CONCLUSIONS: It can be concluded that consuming foods with a higher inflammatory potential is associated with a greater risk of developing NAFLD. Additionally, metabolic diseases, including dyslipidemia, diabetes mellitus, and hypertension, can also predict the incidence of NAFLD.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Cinnamon is one of the most common spices that has been studied for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties in wound healing. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of polycaprolactone nanofiber mats coated with chitosan microcapsules loaded with cinnamon essential oil in wound healing. MATERIAL AND METHODS: For this purpose, chitosan microcapsules containing cinnamon essential oil (µCS-CiZ) were prepared by ion gelation and PCL nanofibers by electrospinning. The size of the µCS-CiZ and the morphology of nanofibers were evaluated by DLS and FESEM methods. In order to evaluate wound healing, 48 rats in 4 groups of Control, µCS-CiZ, PCL, and PCL + µCS-CiZ and were examined on days 7, 14, and 21 in terms of macroscopy (wound closure rate) and histology (edema, inflammation, vascularity, fibrotic tissue, and re-epithelialization). RESULTS: The particle size of the µCS-CiZ and the diameter of the nanofibers were estimated at about 6.33 ± 1.27 µm and 228 ± 33 nm, respectively. On day 21, both µCS-CiZ and PCL groups showed a significant decrease in wound size compared to the control group (P < 0.001). The PCL + µCS-CiZ group also showed a significant decrease compared to the µCS-CiZ (P < 0.05) and PCL groups (P < 0.05). Histological results showed further reduction of edema, inflammation, and vascularity in granulation tissue and appearance of moderate to marked fibrotic tissue in PCL + µCS-CiZ group compared with the other groups. CONCLUSION: The results of the study showed that the combined use of PCL + µCS-CiZ indicates a synergistic effect on improving wound healing.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Pelargonium graveolens L'Hér has traditionally been used to reduce skin inflammation, and recent studies have confirmed antioxidant compounds in the plant's extract. The present study aimed to prepare a lipogel formulation from P. graveolens hydroalcoholic extract and evaluate its efficacy on the wound healing process in an animal model. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The aerial part extract of P. graveolens was prepared through percolation. Additionally, plastibase was prepared by mixing 5% of low-molecular-weight polyethylene with hot mineral oil (130°C). The extract (5%) was levigated in the mineral oil (5-15%) and dispersed in the cooled plastibase. The physical properties of the lipogel, thermal stability, and microbial limits were tested. Further, the effect of the lipogel in the wound healing rate was examined among male Wistar rats, and skin tissue samples were assessed histologically. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The results represented the best rheological and thermal stability characteristics in the formulation with 5% mineral oil (as the levigator). The lipogel-treated group had the least burn area compared to the silver sulfadiazine and negative control groups (p<0.05). The microscopic examination of tissue samples revealed increased collagen fiber production and maturation and significantly also faster epithelial repair among lipogel-treated rats than in the other two groups(p<0.05). CONCLUSION: The results indicated the significant therapeutic effects of P. graveolens lipogelon burn healing. The suitable physicochemical properties and the low lipogel production cost facilitate further scale-up studies.

RESUMO

Acute organophosphate pesticide poisoning causes considerable worldwide mortality and morbidity. In this study, serine was attached to the polyethylene glycol-bisaldehyde (PEG) as a novel antidote for diazinon (DZ) poisoning. Serine and PEG were conjugated with a reductive amination reaction. PEG-serine NPs (PEG-NPs) were purified and their structure was analyzed by 1H NMR, 13 C NMR, IR, and particle size was determined via dynamic light scattering. In vitro studies, including hemolysis assay and cytotoxicity on SK-BR-3 and HFFF2 cell lines, were performed. In vivo studies of PEG-NPs were evaluated on DZ-exposed mice. PEG-NPs were administered (i.p.) 20 min after a single dose of DZ (LD50; 166 mg/kg). Atropine (20 mg/kg, i.p.) with pralidoxime (20 mg/kg, i.p.) was used as the standard therapy compared to PEG-NPs. NMR and IR data confirmed that the conjugation of PEG to serine occurred successfully. The average NP size was 22.1 ± 1.8 nm. The hemolysis of the PEG-NPs was calculated at 0.867%, 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) was calculated 36 ± 4.5, and 41 ± 3.4 mg/mL on SK-BR-3 and HFFF2 cell lines, respectively. Percentage of surviving significantly improved by 12.5, 25, and 25% through the usage of PEG-NPs at doses of 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg, respectively, when compared with the DZ group. Cholinesterase enzyme activity, lipid peroxidation, and mitochondrial function significantly improved through PEG-NPs when compared with the DZ group. PEG conjugated serine is very biocompatible with low toxicity and can reduce the acute toxicity of DZ as a new combination therapy.

RESUMO

Magnesium (Mg)-based alloys are biodegradable metallic biomaterials that show promise in minimizing the risks of permanent metallic implants. However, their clinical applications are restricted due to their rapid in vivo degradation and low surface hemocompatibilities. Surface modifications are critically important for controlling the corrosion rates of Mg-based alloys and improving their hemocompatibilities. In the present study, two heparinization methods were developed to simultaneously increase the corrosion resistance and hemocompatibility of the AZ31 Mg alloy. In the first method, the surface of the AZ31 alloy was modified by alkali-heat treatment and then aminolyzed by 3-amino propyltriethoxy silane (APTES), a self-assembly molecule, and heparin was grafted onto the aminolyzed surface. In the second method, before heparinization, polyamidoamine dendrimers (PAMAM4-4) were grafted onto the aminolyzed surface with APTES to increase the number of surface functional groups, and heparinization was subsequently performed. The presence of a peak with a wavelength of about 1560 cm-1 in the FTIR spectrum for the sample modified with APTES and dendrimers indicated aminolysis of the surface. The results indicated that the corrosion resistance of the Mg alloy was significantly improved as a result of the formation of a passive layer following the alkali-heat treatment. The results obtained from a potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) test showed that the corrosion current in the uncoated sample decreased from 25 µA to 3.7 µA in the alkali-heat-treated sample. The corrosion current density was reduced by 14 and 50 times in samples treated with the self-assembly molecules, APTES and dendrimers, respectively. After heparinization, the clotting time for pristine Mg was greatly improved. Clotting time increased from 480 s for the pristine Mg sample to 630 s for the APTES- and heparin-modified samples and to 715 s for the PAMAM- and heparin-modified samples. Cell culture data showed a slight improvement in the cell-supporting behavior of the modified samples.

RESUMO

In this study, 18 novel quinoline-based-benzo[d]imidazole derivatives were synthesized and screened for their α-glucosidase inhibitory potential. All compounds in the series except 9q showed a significant α-glucosidase inhibition with IC50 values in the range of 3.2 ± 0.3-185.0 ± 0.3 µM, as compared to the standard drug acarbose (IC50 = 750.0 ± 5.0 µM). A kinetic study indicated that compound 9d as the most potent derivative against α-glucosidase was a competitive type inhibitor. Furthermore, the molecular docking study revealed the effective binding interactions of 9d with the active site of the α-glucosidase enzyme. The results indicate that the designed compounds have the potential to be further studied as new anti-diabetic agents.

RESUMO

Aqueous organic redox flow batteries offer a safe and potentially inexpensive solution to the problem of storing massive amounts of electricity produced from intermittent renewables. However, molecular decomposition represents a major barrier to commercialization-and although structural modifications can improve stability, it comes at the expense of synthetic cost and molecular weight. Now, utilizing 2,6-dihydroxy-anthraquinone (DHAQ) without further structural modification, we demonstrate that the regeneration of the original molecule after decomposition represents a viable route to achieve low-cost, long-lifetime aqueous organic redox flow batteries. We used in situ (online) NMR and electron paramagnetic resonance, and complementary electrochemical analyses to show that the decomposition compound 2,6-dihydroxy-anthrone (DHA) and its tautomer, 2,6-dihydroxy-anthranol (DHAL) can be recomposed to DHAQ electrochemically through two steps: oxidation of DHA(L)2- to the dimer (DHA)24- by one-electron transfer followed by oxidation of (DHA)24- to DHAQ2- by three-electron transfer per DHAQ molecule. This electrochemical regeneration process also rejuvenates the positive electrolyte-rebalancing the states of charge of both electrolytes without introducing extra ions.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Leishmaniasis is a major public health problem worldwide in many parts of the world. Current anti-leishmanial drugs have only limited clinical efficacy. Aurothiomalate derivatives are useful for treating rheumatoid arthritis, but have emerged as a promising therapeutic candidate for leishmaniasis. This paper gives a review of the literature about the usefulness of aurothiomalate derivatives against leishmaniasis. METHODS: In this study, we reviewed the proposed mechanisms of action of aurothiomalate and related compounds on the metabolism of L. major and collected data by searching relevant articles. RESULTS: Aurothiomalate-based drugs could be effective against leishmaniasis through two direct and indirect mechanisms: first, cytotoxic effects on parasites via thiomalate's false substrate role in the citric acid cycle against malate; and second, immunosuppressive and anti-inflammatory effects of aurothiomalate derivatives with prostaglandin production inhibitory effects. CONCLUSIONS: The current study documented that aurothiomalate-based drugs could be effective against leishmaniasis through two direct and indirect mechanisms of action. Gold thiomalate as a promising hit should be evaluated against L. major in vitro and in vivo conditions in the future.

RESUMO

In order to study the release of cerium nitrate in a self-healing epoxy-based coating, poly (urea-formaldehyde) (PUF) microcapsules containing cerium nitrate were synthesized. The effects of healing agent concentration and weight percent of microcapsules in the epoxy resin were studied through the incorporation of microcapsules within an epoxy-based coating. The prepared microcapsules were characterized using thermogravimetric analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and confirmed the successful encapsulation of cerium nitrate within PUF capsules. The self-healing performance of the prepared epoxy coating was investigated in 0.6 M NaCl solution using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) tests. The EIS results indicated the successful release of encapsulated cerium nitrate from PUF microcapsules once the damage occurred in the epoxy coating, which led to effective self-healing of the epoxy-based coating. The presence of chlorine and cerium ions in the solution led to the precipitation of cerium hydroxides and oxides in the scratched area as a passive layer which hindered the corrosion in the damaged area. In addition, the EIS results showed that the healing performance of the coatings depends on the weight percent of microcapsules and the concentration of the self-healing agent. The highest self-healing performance was achieved for the maximum amount of microcapsule incorporation (10 wt %), while the increase in the microcapsule percent led to a decrease in the adhesion of the coating to the substrate.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Renal anomalies are the most common fetal abnormalities that occur during prenatal development, and are typically detected by observing hydronephrosis on fetal ultrasound imaging. Follow-up with post-natal ultrasound is important to detect clinically-important obstruction, because many of the pre-natal abnormalities resolve spontaneously. This study aimed to evaluate the postnatal hydronephrosis follow-up rate, and reasons for non follow-up in affected neonates. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study all neonates born during a period of one year at Ayatollah Mousavi Hospital with hydronephrosis on fetal ultrasound imaging were recruited. All mothers were also given face-to-face information about fetal hydronephrosis and its postnatal outcomes, and follow-up with at least a postnatal ultrasound was recommended from the fourth day of their neonates' birth until the end of the fourth week. The neonates were subsequently observed for one month to determine the postnatal ultrasound follow-up rate and to reflect on diagnostic test results, reasons for failure to follow-up, as well as causes of hydronephrosis. RESULTS: In this study, 71 cases (1.2%) out of 5,952 neonates had fetal hydronephrosis on prenatal ultrasound images. The postnatal ultrasound imaging showed kidney involvement in 18 neonates (25%), particularly in the left kidney (61.1%). Seven neonates had no follow-up at one month (10%). No significant relationship was found between lack of follow-up and the neonates' place of residence (p=0.42), maternal education (p=0.90), number of siblings (p=0.33), or gender (p=0.64). CONCLUSIONS: Postnatal ultrasound follow-up rate in these neonates with a history of fetal hydronephrosis was incomplete even though parents had been provided with education and advice at their birth time. Accordingly, it is recommended to perform postnatal ultrasound once neonates are discharged from hospitals.

RESUMO

MATERIALS AND METHODS: Neonatal rats received a single dose of sodium selenite as an intraperitoneal injection (30 µmol/kg) on day 10 postnatal to induce cataract. Animals were then posttreated with various oral solutions of A. officinalis extract at 200 mg/kg or 400 mg/kg once daily on days 10-16 postnatal. Cataract was evaluated by slit-lamp, and lens opacification was analyzed in each group 24 hours after the last treatment at day seven postadministration of the extracts or vehicle. The total protein concentration of lenses, glutathione reductase activity as the glutathione antioxidant capacity, and malondialdehyde content as a marker of lipid peroxidation were further assessed in removed rat lenses on day 30 postnatal. RESULTS: All lenses in the healthy and control plant groups were clear. Sodium selenite significantly increased cataract grade (2.8 ± 0.2) when compared to the healthy group (p = 0.001). However, cataract grades were decreased considerably as 1.9 ± 0.72 and 1.5 ± 0.85 in groups that received 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg oral extract of A. officinalis, respectively. A. officinalis extract also restored all abnormalities of biochemical markers induced by sodium selenite. CONCLUSION: Our data suggest that A. officinalis could be a promising candidate as a safe alternative treatment in cataracts upon further clinical trials. This effect is probably associated with the antioxidant activity of A. officinalis.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: There is a positive association between raised resting heart rate (RHR), and all causes of mortality and shorter life expectancy. Several serum biomarkers and some anthropometric factors can affect the resting heart rate. This study aimed to investigate the determinants of resting heart rate in a large random sample of the Iranian population. MATERIAL AND METHODS: It is a standardized, retrospective study and the subjects were chosen from the baseline survey of the Prospective Epidemiological Research Study in IrAN (PERSIAN) Fasa non-communicable disease cohort study. It was conducted from winter 2014 to summer 2019 and after obtaining informed consent from a random sample, all the eligible subjects were enrolled. All anthropometric factors and biologic laboratory factors were collected and analyzed by implement smoothly clipped absolute deviation (SCAD) linear regression and SCAD quantile regression. The comparisons between males and females were done via independent T-test. RESULTS & CONCLUSION: A total number of 9975 persons from 35 to 90 years old were included. The overall median resting heart rate was 74 (interquartile range:66-80). Mean age has no important difference between males and females (P = 0.79) but, resting heart rate was significantly higher in females (76.6 versus 71.4, P < 0.001). All anthropometric factors except wrist circumference were higher in females (P < 0.05). Age has an adverse effect on resting heart rate and also, there was a direct association between resting heart rate and systolic blood pressure and blood glucose. Alpha-blockers (coefficient = 5.2) and Beta1-blockers (coefficient = - 2.2) were the most effective drugs with positive and negative effects on resting heart rate respectively. Lower hemoglobin, obesity, and more body mass index, and more low-density lipoprotein were associated with more resting heart rate. Continuing the monitoring of this sample via our cohort study and put to action multinational prospective researches with large sample sizes and long follow-ups can lead to more precise results and better scientific judgments.

In the present study, the impact of copper substrate grain size on the structure of the succeeding electrodeposited nickel film and its consequent corrosion resistance in 3.5% NaCl medium were evaluated before and after functionalization with stearic acid. Nickel layers were electrodeposited on two different copper sheets with average grain size of 12 and 25 µm, followed by deposition of stearic acid film through self-assembly. X-ray diffraction analysis of the electrodeposited nickel films revealed that the deposition of nickel film on the Cu substrate with small (12 µm) and large (25 µm) grains is predominantly governed by growth in the (220) and (111) planes, respectively. Both electrodeposited films initially exhibited a hydrophilic nature, with water-contact angles of 56° and <10°, respectively. After functionalization with stearic acid, superhydrophobic films with contact angles of ~150° were obtained on both samples. In a 3.5% NaCl medium, the corrosion resistance of the nickel layer electrodeposited on the copper substrate with 25 µm grains was three times greater than that deposited on the copper substrate with 12 µm grains. After functionalization, the corrosion resistance of both films was greatly improved in both short and long immersion times in 3.5% NaCl medium.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Kidney stone disease can be quite painful, recurrent, and affects many people. Despite advances in drug therapy, there is still a need to find effective drugs with fewer complications for long-term treatment of kidney stones and to prevent its recurrence. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of Prunus Mahaleb L. seed extract on ethylene glycol- and ammonium chloride-induced urolithiasis in BALB/c mice. METHODS: The Prunus Mahaleb L. seeds were collected in Mashhad (Iran) in June 2017. Urolithiasis was induced in male BALB/c mice by adding ethylene glycol (EG) 0.75% (v/v) and ammonium chloride (AC) 2% (w/v) to their drinking water for 21 consecutive days. A total of 72 animals were randomly divided into six groups of twelve animals each. Group 1 received purified water as control; group 2 received EG+AC in drinking water; groups 3-5 received the extracts by gavage in dosages of 100, 300, 500 mg/kg body weight, respectively; and group 6 received 888 mg/kg Sankol by gavage. Note that urolithiasis was induced in groups 3-6 in the same manner as in group 2. The data were analyzed using GraphPad Prism Software (version 5.01). RESULTS: The group receiving Prunus Mahaleb L. extract in a 500 mg/kg dose responded better to the treatment and less damage to the kidney tissue was observed. The serum parameters remarkably decreased in the calculi-induced animals. Besides, the acute toxicity test showed that the use of the extract was safe in animals. CONCLUSION: The results showed that the use of Prunus Mahaleb L. extract effectively prevented the formation of kidney stones.
