Myositis ossificans (MO) is an uncommon tumor characterized by a rapidly growing mass following a history of local trauma. Few cases of MO affecting the breast have been reported, and some were misdiagnosed as primary osteosarcoma of the breast or metaplastic breast carcinoma. The following case report presents a patient with a growing breast lump whose core biopsy result was suspicious for breast cancer. MO was diagnosed after analysis of the mastectomy specimen. This case highlights the importance of MO as a differential diagnosis of a growing soft-tissue mass after trauma to avoid unnecessary overtreatment. In the present work, the synthesis, characterization, antifungal activity, molecular docking study and in silico approach of five thiosemicarbazone derivatives and their corresponding zinc(II) complexes are described. The compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV-Vis and NMR spectroscopic measurements, molar conductivity measurements, emission spectra, high-resolution mass spectrometry and X ray study. The antifungal activity of the free ligands and synthesized compounds was preliminarily evaluated against Candida albicans (ATCC 90028), Candida tropicalis (ATCC 13803) and Candida glabrata (ATCC 2001), by the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) assay. Two complexes, 4 (MIC = 3.18 to 6.37 µM) and 5 (MIC = 25.95 µM for all) showed promising results, being highly active against all strains evaluated. The X-ray analyses shown that the complex 2 crystallizes in the centrosymmetric space group P21/c of the monoclinic system and the coordination sphere around zinc(II) atom is better described as slightly distorted octahedral. The Hirshfeld surface (HS) analysis showed that non-classical H···H and C···H/H···C contacts contribute with 65.9% while the S···H and N···H (21%) and Cl···H and O···H interactions (12%) complete the HS area. The molecular docking results, performed against CYP51 enzyme (sterol 14α-demethylase) of C. albicans and C. glabrata shows that the complexes 4 (ΔG = -10.75 and - 12.90 kcal/ mol) and 5 (ΔG = -11.12 and - 14.53 kcal/ mol) showed the highest binding free energies of all compounds. The ADME-Tox (absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion and toxicity) in silico parameters evaluated showed promising results for all compounds.

The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to assess the satisfaction of parents of visually impaired children with the pediatric ophthalmology care in a Brazilian hospital and to associate parental satisfaction with predictor variables. The study enrolled children with a binocular and monocular visual impairment aged between 4 and 17 years from a single site in Brazil between June 2019 and May 2020. Parents or legal guardians answered the Brazilian version of the Pediatric Quality of Life InventoryTM (PedsQLTM 3.0) Healthcare Satisfaction Generic - Parents. Linear regression analysis was used to investigate the association between the PedsQL scores and predictor variables. The sample included 82 children and their respective parents. The mean PedsQL score was 90.3 ± 6.6 (out of 100). In the univariate model, child female sex (p = 0.056), child older age (p = 0.078), better eye visual acuity (VA; p = 0.016), and worse eye VA (p = 0.008) were significantly associated with higher scores. The multivariate estimates identified the worse eye VA (p = 0.034) as a predictor of parental satisfaction. In summary, parents' satisfaction with this pediatric ophthalmology care was high. Nevertheless, a continuous evaluation is warranted to keep up with parents' expectations and plan for possible improvements in clinical practice.

Systemic arterial hypertension and heart failure are cardiovascular diseases that affect millions of individuals worldwide. They are characterized by a change in the autonomic nervous system balance, highlighted by an increase in sympathetic activity associated with a decrease in parasympathetic activity. Most therapeutic approaches seek to treat these diseases by medications that attenuate sympathetic activity. However, there is a growing number of studies demonstrating that the improvement of parasympathetic function, by means of pharmacological or electrical stimulation, can be an effective tool for the treatment of these cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, this review aims to describe the advances reported by experimental and clinical studies that addressed the potential of cholinergic stimulation to prevent autonomic and cardiovascular imbalance in hypertension and heart failure. Overall, the published data reviewed demonstrate that the use of central or peripheral acetylcholinesterase inhibitors is efficient to improve the autonomic imbalance and hemodynamic changes observed in heart failure and hypertension. Of note, the baroreflex and the vagus nerve activation have been shown to be safe and effective approaches to be used as an alternative treatment for these cardiovascular diseases. In conclusion, pharmacological and electrical stimulation of the parasympathetic nervous system has the potential to be used as a therapeutic tool for the treatment of hypertension and heart failure, deserving to be more explored in the clinical setting.

Aim: The PHLDA (pleckstrin homology like domain, family A) gene family encodes proteins capable of inhibiting AKT (serine/threonine kinase) signaling through phosphoinositol binding competition. Results & methodology: Using in silico analysis, we found that Luminal A and B patients' short relapse-free survival was associated with low PHLDA1 or PHLDA3 and high PHLDA2 expression. In a cohort of 393 patients with luminal breast cancer evaluated by immunohistochemistry on tissue microarrays, we found a direct association of PHLDA3 expression with hormonal therapy response (p = 0.013). Conclusion: Our findings provide new information on the role played by the PHLDA family members as prognostic markers in breast cancer, and more importantly, we provide evidence that they might also predict a response to endocrine therapy.

Environmental heterogeneity is a factor which can help explain the higher local species richness. The objective of this study was to test if richness and composition of anurans species are related to available microhabitats and landscape type of sampled sites. We assume that a higher number of microhabitats increase environmental heterogeneity and this, in turn, affects species richness of amphibians. We performed the study in the Mesophytic Semideciduous Forest, a vegetation type within Atlantic Forest Domain. Between October 2010 and February 2011, we sampled 23 water bodies located in the agricultural, forest, and urban landscapes. The species richness was determined using survey at breeding sites methodology, and the availability of microhabitats was estimated visually. Thirty-four anuran species belonging to 12 families were recorded. The species richness in water bodies ranged from two to 13 species. The highest species richness was recorded in environments with a higher number of microhabitats, while the species composition in water bodies was partially grouped according to the predominant landscape type that is agricultural, forest, forest edge or urban. Our results suggest that species use specific environments (e.g. landscapes, habitat and microhabitat) for their reproductive activities.

The protective antioxidant activity of acetylcysteine (NAC) against toxicity due to cisplatin has been reported in experimental models; however, its efficacy in patients has not been elucidated. The aim of this study was to investigate the possible protective effect of NAC on cisplatin-induced toxicity and the effect of NAC on clinical response and oxidative stress in patients treated for head and neck cancer. This was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial conducted in patients receiving high-dose cisplatin chemotherapy concomitant to radiotherapy. Patients were randomly assigned to groups and received: (a) 600 mg NAC syrup, orally once daily at night for 7 consecutive days or (b) placebo, administered similarly to NAC. Nephro-, oto-, hepato-, myelo-, and gastrointestinal toxicities, clinical responses, and plasma and cellular markers of oxidative stress were evaluated. Fifty-seven patients were included (n = 28, NAC arm; and n = 29, placebo arm). A high prevalence of most types of toxicities was observed after cisplatin chemotherapy; however, the parameters were similar between the two groups. There was a predominance of partial response to treatment. In the cellular and plasmatic oxidative stress analyses, minor differences were observed. Overall, there was no statistically significant difference between the groups for all outcomes. These findings show that low-dose oral NAC does not protect patients with head and neck cancer from cisplatin-induced toxicities and oxidative stress. The antitumor efficacy of cisplatin was apparently not impaired by NAC.

The dengue virus (DENV), transmitted by Aedes spp. mosquitoes, is one of the most important arboviral infections in the world. Dengue begins as a febrile condition, and in certain patients, it can evolve severe clinical outcomes, such as dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) and dengue shock syndrome (DSS). The reasons why certain patients develop DHF or DSS have not been thoroughly elucidated to date, and both patient and viral factors have been implicated. Previous work has shown that a severe immune dysfunction involving dendritic cells and T cells plays a key role in increasing the disease severity, especially in secondary heterologous infections. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are membranous particles that are secreted by several cell types involved in homeostatic and pathological processes. Secretion of EVs by infected cells can enhance immune responses or favor viral evasion. In this study, we compare the molecular content of EVs that are secreted by human primary dendritic cells under different conditions: uninfected or infected with DENV3 strains isolated from patients with different infection phenotypes (a severe case involving DSS and a mild case). Human monocyte-derived dendritic cells (mdDCs) were infected with the dengue virus strains DENV3 5532 (severe) or DENV3 290 (mild), and the EVs were isolated. The presence of cup-shaped EVs was confirmed by electron microscopy and immunostaining with CD9, CD81, and CD83. The RNA content from the mdDC-infected cells contained several mRNAs and miRNAs related to immune responses compared to the EVs from mock-infected mdDCs. A number of these RNAs were detected exclusively during infection with DENV3 290 or DENV3 5532. This result suggests that the differential immune modulation of mdDCs by dengue strains can be achieved through the EV pathway. Additionally, we observed an association of EVs with DENV-infectious particles that seem to be protected from antibodies targeting the DENV envelope protein. We also showed that EVs derived from cells treated with IFN alpha have a protective effect against DENV infection in other cells. These results suggested that during DENV infection, the EV pathway could be exploited to favor viral viability, although immune mechanisms to counteract viral infection can also involve DC-derived EVs.

The effect of fenofibrate on the metabolism of skeletal muscle and visceral white adipose tissue of diet-induced obese (DIO) mice was investigated. C57BL/6J male mice were fed either a control or high-fat diet for 8 weeks. Fenofibrate (50 mg/Kg BW, daily) was administered by oral gavage during the last two weeks of the experimental period. Insulin-stimulated glucose metabolism in soleus muscles, glucose tolerance test, insulin tolerance test, indirect calorimetry, lipolysis of visceral white adipose tissue, expression of miR-103-3p in adipose tissue, and miR-1a, miR-133a/b, miR-206, let7b-5p, miR-23b-3p, miR-29-3p, miR-143-3p in soleus muscle, genes related to glucose and fatty acid metabolism in adipose tissue and soleus muscle, and proteins (phospho-AMPKα2, Pgc1α, Cpt1b), intramuscular lipid staining, and activities of fatty acid oxidation enzymes in skeletal muscle were investigated. In DIO mice, fenofibrate prevented weight gain induced by HFD feeding by increasing energy expenditure; improved whole body glucose homeostasis, and in skeletal muscle, increased insulin dependent glucose uptake, miR-1a levels, reduced intramuscular lipid accumulation, and phospho-AMPKα2 levels. In visceral adipose tissue of obese mice, fenofibrate decreased basal lipolysis rate and visceral adipocytes hypertrophy, and induced the expression of Glut-4, Irs1, and Cav-1 mRNA and miR-103-3p suggesting a higher insulin sensitivity of the adipocytes. The evidence is presented herein that beneficial effects of fenofibrate on body weight, glucose homeostasis, and muscle metabolism might be related to its action in adipose tissue. Moreover, fenofibrate regulates miR-1a-3p in soleus and miR-103-3p in adipose tissue, suggesting these microRNAs might contribute to fenofibrate beneficial effects on metabolism.

The vegetative desiccation tolerance of Tripogon spicatus (Nees) Ekman was confirmed by its ability to recover the physiological functionality of intact plants previously subjected to extreme dehydration. Photosynthesis became undetectable when leaf relative water content (RWCleaf) achieved ~60%, whereas photochemical variables showed a partial decrease. Until the minimum RWCleaf of 6.41%, total chl decreased by 9%, and total carotenoids increased by 29%. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity decreased by 57%, on average, during dehydration, but catalase (CAT) and peroxidase (APX) activities showed no significant differences throughout the experiment. Malondialdehyde (MDA) content increased by 151%, total leaf and root amino acids decreased by 62% and 77%, respectively, whereas leaf and root proline decreased by 40% and 61%, respectively, until complete desiccation. After rehydration, leaves completely recovered turgidity and total chl contents. Carotenoids and MDA remained high, whereas SOD was 60% lower than the measured average measured before dehydration. With the exception of root amino acid contents, total amino acids and proline concentrations recovered completely. Gas exchange and photochemical variables remained substantially higher 4 days after rehydration, compared with the control. Besides increasing MDA, the overall physiological results showed that membrane functionality was preserved, leading to the vegetative desiccation tolerance of T. spicatus during the dehydration-rehydration cycle.

El género Peperomia (Piperaceae), es bien conocido por sus especies ornamentales y usos etnomedicinales. En el presente trabajo se describe la caracterización química y la actividad antibacteriana del aceite esencial de Peperomia acuminata Ruiz & Pav. proveniente del Estado Mérida Venezuela. El aceite esencial se obtuvo por hidrodestilación de las hojas y la separación de los componentes se realizó por Cromatografía de gases-Espectrometría de Masas (CG/EM). Se logró la elucidación de ocho compuestos (96,7%), siendo el 2E-dodecenal el componente mayoritario (65%) seguido de dodecanal (14,8%) y tetradecanal (9,2%). Esta investigación muestra el potencial del aceite esencial de P. acuminata frente a bacterias Gram positivas (Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 y Enterococcus faecalis 29212), con un valor de Concentración inhibitoria mínima de 1μL/mL. Este es el primer reporte sobre la composición química del aceite esencial de esta especie, por lo tanto una contribución importante al estudio del género Peperomia.
The genus Peperomia (Piperaceae) is well known for its ornamental species and ethnomedicinal uses. This paper aims to chemically characterize the essential oil of Peperomia acuminata Ruiz & Pav. from Mérida State, Venezuela, and determine its microbiological activity. The essential oil is obtained by hydrodistillation of the leaves and the separation of the components was performed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Eight compounds (96.7%) were elucidated in the oil. The 2E dodecenal was found to be the major component (65%) followed by dodecanal (14.8%) and tetradecanal (9.2%). The essential oil showed high specificity against Gram positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus ATCC (25923) and Enterococcus faecalis (29212) with a Minimum Inhibitory Concentration of 1 µL/mL. This is the first report about chemical composition of the essential oil from this specie therefore an important contribution to the study of the genus Peperomia.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiac output increases during incremental-load exercise to meet metabolic skeletal muscle demand. This response requires a fast adjustment in heart rate and stroke volume. The heart rate is well known to increase linearly with exercise load; however, data for stroke volume during incremental-load exercise are unclear. Our objectives were to (a) review studies that have investigated stroke volume on incremental load exercise and (b) summarize the findings for stroke volume, primarily at maximal-exercise load. METHODS: A comprehensive review of the Cochrane Library's, Embase, Medline, SportDiscus, PubMed, and Web of Sci-ence databases was carried out for the years 1985 to the present. The search was performed between February and June 2014 to find studies evaluating changes in stroke volume during incremental-load exercise. Controlled and uncontrolled trials were evaluated for a quality score. RESULTS: The stroke volume data in maximal-exercise load are inconsistent. There is evidence to hypothesis that stroke volume increases during maximal-exercise load, but other lines of evidence indicate that stroke volume reaches a plateau under these circumstances, or even decreases. CONCLUSION: The stroke volume are unclear, include contradictory evidence. Additional studies with standardized reporting for subjects (e.g., age, gender, physical fitness, and body position), exercise test protocols, and left ventricular function are required to clarify the characteristics of stroke volume during incremental maximal-exercise load.

INTRODUCTION: Obesity and overweight are increasing worldwide and may compromise female sexual function. Our aim was to compare the sexual function of normal and overweight women in pregnancy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study involving 223 pregnant women: 105 overweight [pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) ≥ 25.0 kg/m(2) ] and 118 normal weight (BMI 18.5-24.9 kg/m(2) ), in the 2nd and 3rd trimester of pregnancy. These women were managed at an antenatal clinic of a public university hospital in São Paulo, Brazil, between 2011 and 2014. The Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) was used. The characteristics of normal and overweight women were compared using two-tailed Student's t- or chi-squared tests. Differences in mean FSFI scores were assessed using the Kruskal-Wallis test. Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to assess the correlation between pre-pregnancy BMI and FSFI scores. RESULTS: In the 2nd trimester, mean total FSFI scores were similar in overweight (n = 51) compared to normal weight (n = 67) women (21.9 ± 9.8 vs. 21.7 ± 10.4, p = 1.000). In the 3rd trimester, overweight women (n = 54) had significantly lower total FSFI scores than normal weight women (n = 51; 19.1 ± 10.3 vs. 24.5 ± 9.7, p = 0.0004). In the 3rd trimester, overweight women also had significantly lower mean scores in desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm and dyspareunia domains. We found an inverse correlation between pre-pregnancy BMI and mean 3rd trimester total FSFI scores (r = -0.212, p = 0.030), desire (r = -0.216, p = 0.027) and orgasm (r = -0.222, p = 0.023). CONCLUSION: Overweight women in the 3rd trimester of pregnancy had poorer sexual function compared with normal weight women.

Epidemiological, behavioral, and clinical data on sexual compulsivity in Brazil are very limited. This study sought to adapt and validate the Sexual Compulsivity Scale (SCS), the 22-item version of the Compulsive Sexual Behavior Inventory (CSBI-22), and the Hypersexual Disorder Screening Inventory (HDSI) for use in Brazil. A total of 153 participants underwent psychiatric assessment and completed self-reported measures. The adaptation process of the instruments from English to Portuguese followed the guidelines of the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research. The reliability and validity of the HDSI criteria were evaluated and the construct validity of all measures was examined. For the SCS and HDSI, factor analysis revealed one factor for each measure. For the CSBI-22, four factors were retained although we only calculated the scores of two factors (control and violence). All scores had good internal consistency (alpha >.75), presented high temporal stability (>.76), discriminated between patients and controls, and presented strong (ρ > .81) correlations with the Sexual Addiction Screening Test (except for the violence domain = .40) and moderate correlations with the Impulsive Sensation Seeking domain of the Zuckerman Kuhlman Personality Questionnaire (ρ between .43 and .55). The sensitivity of the HDSI was 71.93 % and the specificity was 100 %. All measures showed very good psychometric properties. The SCS, the HDSI, and the control domain of the CSBI-22 seemed to measure theoretically similar constructs, as they were highly correlated (ρ > .85). The findings support the conceptualization of hypersexuality as a cluster of problematic symptoms that are highly consistent across a variety of measures.

The aim of this work was to determine ruminal degradation of neutral detergent fiber of grasses of the genus Cynodon, harvested at four cutting ages. It was used a randomized block design, with five treatments arranged in a split plot, the five evaluated genotypes: Tifton 85, Jiggs, Russel, Tifton 68 and Vaquero; were the plots and ages of cutting were the subplots: 28, 48, 63 and 79 days. By adding one day in the cutting age, there was a linear reduction in the effective degradability of neutral detergent fiber of blade and stem of 0.16 and 0.18%, respectively. The increase in the cutting age had a linear and positive influence on the undegradable neutral detergent fiber with daily increments for leaf and stem of 0.12 and 0.18%, respectively. At the 28 regrowth day, all genotypes showed higher content of potentially degradable insoluble fraction, effective degradability and lower undegradable fraction of the neutral detergent fiber of blade and stem in relation to other ages, in this way this interval is recommended for cutting management.
Objetivou-se por meio deste trabalho determinar a degradação ruminal da fibra em detergente neutro de gramíneas do gênero Cynodon, colhidas em quatro idades de corte. Foi utilizado o delineamento em blocos ao acaso, com cinco tratamentos arranjados em um esquema de parcelas subdivididas, sendo os cinco genótipos: Tifton 85, Jiggs, Russel, Tifton 68 e Vaqueiro; estudadas as parcelas e as quatro idades de corte as subparcelas: 28, 48, 63 e 79 dias. À medida que aumentou um dia na idade de corte, houve redução linear da degradabilidade efetiva da fibra em detergente neutro da lâmina e do colmo em 0,16 e 0,18%,respectivamente. O avanço na idade de corte influenciou linearmente e positivamente a fração indegradável da fibra em detergente neutro com incrementos diários para a lâmina foliar e para o colmo de 0,12 e 0,18%,respectivamente. Na idade de 28 dias de rebrota, todos os genótipos apresentaram maiores teores de fração insolúvel potencialmente degradável, degradabilidade efetiva e menor fração indegradável da fibra em detergente neutro da lâmina e do colmo em relação às demais idades, sendo desta forma recomendado esse intervalo para manejo de corte.

The aim of this work was to determine ruminal degradation of neutral detergent fiber of grasses of the genus Cynodon, harvested at four cutting ages. It was used a randomized block design, with five treatments arranged in a split plot, the five evaluated genotypes: Tifton 85, Jiggs, Russel, Tifton 68 and Vaquero; were the plots and ages of cutting were the subplots: 28, 48, 63 and 79 days. By adding one day in the cutting age, there was a linear reduction in the effective degradability of neutral detergent fiber of blade and stem of 0.16 and 0.18%, respectively. The increase in the cutting age had a linear and positive influence on the undegradable neutral detergent fiber with daily increments for leaf and stem of 0.12 and 0.18%, respectively. At the 28 regrowth day, all genotypes showed higher content of potentially degradable insoluble fraction, effective degradability and lower undegradable fraction of the neutral detergent fiber of blade and stem in relation to other ages, in this way this interval is recommended for cutting management.(AU)
Objetivou-se por meio deste trabalho determinar a degradação ruminal da fibra em detergente neutro de gramíneas do gênero Cynodon, colhidas em quatro idades de corte. Foi utilizado o delineamento em blocos ao acaso, com cinco tratamentos arranjados em um esquema de parcelas subdivididas, sendo os cinco genótipos: Tifton 85, Jiggs, Russel, Tifton 68 e Vaqueiro; estudadas as parcelas e as quatro idades de corte as subparcelas: 28, 48, 63 e 79 dias. El etiquetado es el punto más visible de la información de un alimento y constituye uno de los pilares básicos en los que se apoya su comercialización. El objetivo de este trabajo fue estudiar la composición de nutrientes en el etiquetado nutricional de productos industrializados, tipo snacks, que se comercializan en grandes cadenas de supermercados en Caracas, Venezuela. Se recolectaron en total 472 etiquetados nutricionales de alimentos industrializados (nacionales e importados). Se clasificó a los productos alimenticios en 5 grupos, de acuerdo al nombre descriptivo expresado por la empresa fabricante en el etiquetado nutricional: a base de Cereales, a base de Plátanos-Tubérculos, a base de Frutos Secos, Bebidas y Golosinas. Debido a que los valores del etiquetado nutricional se basan en la ración o porción a consumir, y ya que diferían para cada producto, se calculó el contenido nutricional sobre la base de 100 gramos de peso comestible; esto con la finalidad de unificar todos los datos a una misma base para poder compararlos, y promediarlos entre sí. Se muestran los valores de ración y contenido neto; así como, el aporte calórico y de macronutrientes de los 44 subgrupos de alimentos evaluados. Este trabajo representa una contribución para el análisis de la composición nutricional del etiquetado de los productos industrializados, tipo snacks; permite su uso para la evaluación nutricional de individuos y colectivos, además de asentar las bases para la creación de una guía de etiquetados nutricionales.
The labeling is the most visible point of the information of a food and constitutes one of the basic pillars that support its marketing. The aim of this work was to study the composition of nutrients in nutrition labeling of processed products, type snacks, than sold in large supermarket chains in Caracas, Venezuela. 472 nutritional labeling of processed foods were collected in total (domestic and imported). Food products were classified into 5 groups, according to the descriptive name expressed by the manufacturer in nutrition labeling: based on Cereals, based on Plantains-Tubers, based on Nuts, Drinks and Treats. Because nutrition labeling values are based on the serving or portion size, the nutritional content based on 100 grams of edible weight was calculated; this in order to unify all data to a common basis for comparison, and average them together. Tables show the values of ration and net content, as well as, the caloric and macronutrient values of the 44 food subgroups evaluated. This work represents a contribution to the analysis of the nutritional composition labeling of industrial product, type snacks; allows its use for nutritional assessment of individuals and groups, as well as lay the groundwork for the creation of a nutritional labeling guide.
