RESUMO

A novel algorithm to reconstruct neutrino-induced particle showers within the ANTARES neutrino telescope is presented. The method achieves a median angular resolution of [Formula: see text] for shower energies below 100 TeV. Applying this algorithm to 6 years of data taken with the ANTARES detector, 8 events with reconstructed shower energies above 10 TeV are observed. This is consistent with the expectation of about 5 events from atmospheric backgrounds, but also compatible with diffuse astrophysical flux measurements by the IceCube collaboration, from which 2-4 additional events are expected. A [Formula: see text] C.L. upper limit on the diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux with a value per neutrino flavour of [Formula: see text] is set, applicable to the energy range from 23 TeV to 7.8 PeV, assuming an unbroken [Formula: see text] spectrum and neutrino flavour equipartition at Earth.

RESUMO

Despite dedicated research has been carried out to adequately map the distribution of the sperm whale in the Mediterranean Sea, unlike other regions of the world, the species population status is still presently uncertain. The analysis of two years of continuous acoustic data provided by the ANTARES neutrino telescope revealed the year-round presence of sperm whales in the Ligurian Sea, probably associated with the availability of cephalopods in the region. The presence of the Ligurian Sea sperm whales was demonstrated through the real-time analysis of audio data streamed from a cabled-to-shore deep-sea observatory that allowed the hourly tracking of their long-range echolocation behaviour on the Internet. Interestingly, the same acoustic analysis indicated that the occurrence of surface shipping noise would apparently not condition the foraging behaviour of the sperm whale in the area, since shipping noise was almost always present when sperm whales were acoustically detected. The continuous presence of the sperm whale in the region confirms the ecological value of the Ligurian sea and the importance of ANTARES to help monitoring its ecosystems.

Abyssal temperature and velocity observations performed within the framework of the Neutrino Mediterranean Observatory, a project devoted to constructing a km(3)-scale underwater telescope for the detection of high-energy cosmic neutrinos, demonstrate cross-fertilization between subnuclear physics and experimental oceanography. Here we use data collected south of Sicily in the Ionian abyssal plain of the Eastern Mediterranean (EM) basin to show for the first time that abyssal vortices exist in the EM, at depths exceeding 2,500 m. The eddies consist of chains of near-inertially pulsating mesoscale cyclones/anticyclones. They are embedded in an abyssal current flowing towards North-Northwest. The paucity of existing data does not allow for an unambiguous determination of the vortex origin. A local generation mechanism seems probable, but a remote genesis cannot be excluded a priori. The presence of such eddies adds further complexity to the discussion of structure and evolution of water masses in the EM.

UNLABELLED: The prevalence of children's obesity is increasing all over the world. It has been related to an increment of all morbimortality causes in the mature age. To determine the prevalence of obesity and other cardiovascular risk factors in adolescence, and correlate them with each other, we designed a cross-sectional study. A survey was applied to 2115 secondary school students, 1212 (57.3%) females and 903 (42.7%) males; blood pressure (BP) and cholesterol level were measured. Mean age: 14.8 +/- 1.6.: Body Mass Index (BMI): 20.6 +/- 3.1, 1838 (86.9%) normal, 230 (10.9%) where overweight and 47 (2.2%) obese, higher in males (OR = 1.46; IC = 1.12-1.91; p = 0.03). Weekly physical activity: 3.9 +/- 2.9 hs. higher in males (p < 0.001). Sedentarism daily hours: 3.2 +/- 1.9. ANTECEDENTS: maternal obesity 282 (13.3%), paternal 311 (14.7%) and in both 116 (6.6%). Regular consumption of fatty foods: 1711 (80.9%). SBP: 107.8 +/- 13.6; DBP: 66.9 +/- 11.5; MBP: 80.5 +/- 10.1. We found hypertension in 64 (3%) prevalent in males (p = 0.002). Cholesterol: 161.9 +/- 29.2; desirable 1283 (60.7%); normal high 628 (29.5%) and high 208 (9.8%). BMI and MBP correlation was: r = 0.25; r2 = 0.06; CI 95%: 0.02-0.11; b coefficient 0.83. We found a positive correlation of BMI with MBP (0.83 mm Hg increment for each point of BMI increment). We found significant association between parental obesity and alcohol consumption and BMI increment. We did not find any association with dietary habits, physical activity or sedentarism.
