RESUMO

The present work develops an effective bioadsorbent of cross-linked chitosan-genipin/SiO2 adsorbent (CHI-GNP/SiO2). The developed CHI-GNP/SiO2 was employed for the removal of organic dye (reactive orange 16, RO16) from simulated wastewater. The optimization of the fundamental adsorption variables (CHI-GNP/SiO2 dose, time, and pH) via the Box-Behnken design (BBD) was attained for achieving maximal adsorption capacity and high removal efficiency. The good agreement between the Freundlich isotherms and empirical data of RO16 adsorption by CHI-GNP/SiO2 indicates that the adsorption process follows a multilayer adsorption mechanism. The reasonable agreement between the pseudo-second-order model and the kinetic data of RO16 adsorption by CHI-GNP/SiO2 was obtained. The maximum RO16 adsorption capacity (qmax) of CHI-GNP/SiO2 was identified to be 57.1 mg/g. The adsorption capacity of CHI-GNP/SiO2 is attributed to its unique surface properties, including its highly porous structure and the presence of functional groups such as amino and hydroxyl groups. According to the results of this investigation, CHI-GNP/SiO2 has the potential to be an adsorbent for the removal of acidic dyes from wastewater.

RESUMO

A composite of chitosan biopolymer with microalgae and commercial carbon-doped titanium dioxide (kronos) was modified by grafting an aromatic aldehyde (salicylaldehyde) in a hydrothermal process for the removal of brilliant green (BG) dye. The resulting Schiff's base Chitosan-Microalgae-TiO2 kronos/Salicylaldehyde (CsMaTk/S) material was characterised using various analytical methods (conclusive of physical properties using BET surface analysis method, elemental analysis, FTIR, SEM-EDX, XRD, XPS and point of zero charge). Box Behnken Design was utilised for the optimisation of the three input variables, i.e., adsorbent dose, pH of the media and contact time. The optimum conditions appointed by the optimisation process were further affirmed by the desirability test and employed in the equilibrium studies in batch mode and the results exhibited a better fit towards the pseudo-second-order kinetic model as well as Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 957.0 mg/g. Furthermore, the reusability study displayed the adsorptive performance of CsMaTk/S remains effective throughout five adsorption cycles. The possible interactions between the dye molecules and the surface of the adsorbent were derived based on the analyses performed and the electrostatic attractions, H-bonding, Yoshida-H bonding, π-π and n-π interactions are concluded to be the responsible forces in this adsorption process.

RESUMO

Herein, a natural material including chitosan (CTS) and algae (food-grade algae, FGA) was exploited to attain a bio-adsorbent (CTS/FGA) for enhanced methyl violet 2B dye removal. A study of the FGA loading into CTS matrix showed that the best mixing ratio between CTS and FGA to be used for the MV 2B removal was 50 %:50 % (CTS/FGA; 50:50 w/w). The present study employed the Box-Behnken design (RSM-BBD) to investigate the impact of three processing factors, namely CTS/FGA-(50:50) dose (0.02-0.1 g/100 mL), pH of solution (4-10), and contact time (5-15 min) on the decolorization rate of MV 2B dye. The results obtained from the equilibrium and kinetic experiments indicate that the adsorption of MV 2B dye on CTS/FGA-(50:50) follows the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order models, respectively. The CTS/FGA exhibits an adsorption capacity of 179.8 mg/g. The characterization of CTS/FGA-(50:50) involves the proposed mechanism of MV 2B adsorption, which primarily encompasses various interactions such as electrostatic forces, n-π stacking, and H-bonding. The present study demonstrates that CTS/FGA-(50:50) synthesized material exhibits a distinctive structure and excellent adsorption properties, thereby providing a viable option for the elimination of toxic cationic dyes from polluted water.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study is the synthesis of α-MnO2-based cathode materials for rechargeable aqueous zinc ion batteries by hydrothermal method using KMnO4 and MnSO4 as starting materials. The aim is to improve the understanding of Zn2+ insertion/de-insertion mechanisms. The as-prepared solid compounds were characterized by spectroscopy and microscopy techniques. X-ray diffraction showed that the hydrothermal reaction forms α-MnO2 and Ce4+-inserted MnO2 structures. Raman spectroscopy confirmed the formation of α-MnO2 with hexagonal MnO2 and Ce-MnO2 structures. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed the formation of nanostructured MnO2 (nanofibers) and Ce-MnO2 (nanorods). The electrochemical performance of MnO2 was evaluated using cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD) tests in half-cells. CV results showed the reversible insertion/de-insertion of Zn2+ ions in MnO2 and Ce-MnO2. GCD cycling tests of MnO2 and Ce-MnO2 at 2500 mA/g demonstrated an impressive electrochemical performance, excellent cycling stability throughout 500 cycles, and high rate capability. The excellent electrochemical performance and the good cycling stability of MnO2 and Ce-MnO2 nanostructures by simple method makes them promising cathode materials for aqueous rechargeable zinc-ion batteries.

RESUMO

Silicon and silicon nitride (Si3N4) are some of the most appealing candidates as anode materials for LIBs (Li-ion battery) due to their favorable characteristics: low cost, abundance of Si, and high theoretical capacity. However, these materials have their own set of challenges that need to be addressed for practical applications. A thin film consisting of silicon nitride-coated silicon on a copper current collector (Si3N4@Si@Cu) has been prepared in this work via RF magnetron sputtering (Radio Frequency magnetron sputtering). The anode material was characterized before and after cycling to assess the difference in appearance and composition using XRD (X-ray Powder Diffraction), XPS (X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy), SEM/EDX (Scanning Electron Microscopy/ Energy Dispersive X-Ray Analysis), and TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy). The effect of the silicon nitride coating on the electrochemical performance of the anode material for LIBs was evaluated against Si@Cu film. It has been found that the Si3N4@Si@Cu anode achieved a higher capacity retention (90%) compared to Si@Cu (20%) after 50 cycles in a half-cell versus Li+/Li, indicating a significant improvement in electrochemical performance. In a full cell, the Si3N4@Si@Cu anode achieved excellent efficiency and acceptable specific capacities, which can be enhanced with further research.
