RESUMO

Previous evidence suggest involvement of the complement receptor 1 (CR1) in development of Alzheimer's disease. We investigated the association of CR1 gene polymorphisms with cognitive function in older subjects. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within the CR1 region on chromosome 1 ( n = 73) were assessed in 5,244 participants in the PROspective Study of Pravastatin in the Elderly at Risk (51.9% female, mean age 75.3 yr). Linear regression, adjusted for age, sex, country, and use of pravastatin, was used to assess the association between the SNPs and cognitive function. All 73 SNPs within the genomic region of the CR1 gene on chromosome 1 were extracted. Eighteen were independent, according to a relatively stringent R2 threshold of >0.8 with LDlink. Twelve of the 18 investigated CR1 SNPs were significantly associated with a decline in cognitive function (all P < 0.05). These data indicate that genetic variation within the CR1 gene is associated not only with Alzheimer's disease, but also with general cognitive function during late life.

RESUMO

The low-energy (ε = hω < 1 meV), low-temperature (T = 0.05 K) spin dynamics of the s = 1/2 kagome candidate herbertsmithite are probed in the presence of magnetic fields up to 2.5 T. The zero-field spectra reveal a very weak continuum of scattering at T = 10 K and a broad inelastic peak centred at ε(max) = 0.2 meV at lower temperatures, T < 1 K. The broad peak is found to be strongly damped, with a liquid-like structure factor implying correlations at length scales up to r = 6 Å. The field dependence of the peak appears to follow the Zeeman splitting of s = 1/2 excitations, consistent with the weakly split 'doublets' observed in low-temperature specific heat. A possible explanation of these observations is a short-range correlated state involving defect spins between the kagome planes and moments in the kagome layers.

RESUMO

The vanadium oxyfluoride [NH(4)](2)[C(7)H(14)N][V(7)O(6)F(18)] (DQVOF) is a geometrically frustrated magnetic bilayer material. The structure consists of S = 1/2 kagome planes of V(4+) d(1) ions with S = 1 V(3+) d(2) ions located between the kagome layers. Muon spin relaxation measurements demonstrate the absence of spin freezing down to 40 mK despite an energy scale of 60 K for antiferromagnetic exchange interactions. From magnetization and heat capacity measurements we conclude that the S = 1 spins of the interplane V(3+) ions are weakly coupled to the kagome layers, such that DQVOF can be viewed as an experimental model for S = 1/2 kagome physics, and that it displays a gapless spin liquid ground state.

RESUMO

The structural and magnetic properties of deuterated herbertsmithite have been studied by means of neutron powder diffraction and magnetic susceptibility measurements in a wide range of temperatures and pressures. The experimental data demonstrate that a phase transition from the quantum-disordered spin-liquid phase to the long-range ordered antiferromagnetic phase with the Néel temperature T(N)=6 K is induced at P=2.5 GPa. The observed decrease of T(N) upon compression correlates with the anomalies in pressure behavior of Cu-O bond length and Cu-O-Cu bond angles. The reasons for the observed spin-freezing transition are discussed within the framework of the available theoretical models and the recent observation of the field-induced spin freezing.

RESUMO

We report (17)O NMR measurements in the S=1/2 (Cu(2+)) kagome antiferromagnet Herbertsmithite ZnCu(3)(OH)(6)Cl(2) down to 45 mK in magnetic fields ranging from 2 to 12 T. While Herbertsmithite displays a gapless spin-liquid behavior in zero field, we uncover an instability toward a spin-solid phase at sub-Kelvin temperature induced by an applied magnetic field. The latter phase shows largely suppressed moments ≲0.1 µ(B) and gapped excitations. The H-T phase diagram suggests the existence of a quantum critical point at the small but finite magnetic field µ(0)H(c)=1.55(25) T. We discuss this finding in light of the perturbative Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction which was theoretically proposed to sustain a quantum critical regime for the quantum kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet model.

RESUMO

We report on the unconventional magnetism in the cubic B-site ordered double perovskite Ba2YMoO6, using ac and dc magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity and muon spin rotation. No magnetic order is observed down to 2 K while the Weiss temperature is approximately -160 K. This is ascribed to the geometric frustration in the lattice of edge-sharing tetrahedra with orbitally degenerate Mo5+ s=1/2 spins. Our experimental results point to a gradual freezing of the spins into a disordered pattern of spin singlets, quenching the orbital degeneracy while leaving the global cubic symmetry unaffected, and providing a rare example of a valence bond glass.

RESUMO

Neutron spectroscopy and diffuse neutron scattering on herbertsmithite [ZnCu(3)(OH)(6)Cl(2)], a near-ideal realization of the s=1/2 kagome antiferromagnet, reveal the hallmark property of a quantum spin liquid: instantaneous short-ranged antiferromagnetic correlations in the absence of a time-averaged ordered moment. These dynamic antiferromagnetic correlations are weakly dependent of neutron-energy transfer and temperature, and persist up to 25 meV and 120 K. At low energy transfers a shift of the magnetic scattering to low Q is observed with increasing temperature, providing evidence of gapless spinons. It is argued that these observations provide important evidence in favor of resonating-valence-bond theories of (doped) Mott insulators.

RESUMO

We report the determination of the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction, the dominant magnetic anisotropy term in the kagome spin-1/2 compound ZnCu3(OH)6Cl2. Based on the analysis of the high-temperature electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra, we find its main component |Dz|=15(1) K to be perpendicular to the kagome planes. Through the temperature dependent ESR linewidth, we observe a building up of nearest-neighbor spin-spin correlations below approximately 150 K.

We present a detailed analysis of the heat capacity of a near-perfect S=1/2 kagome antiferromagnet, zinc paratacamite Zn(x)Cu(4-x)(OH)(6)Cl(2), as a function of stoichiometry x-->1 and for fields of up to 9 T. We obtain the heat capacity intrinsic to the kagome layers by accounting for the weak Cu2+/Zn2+ exchange between the Cu and the Zn sites, which was measured independently for x=1 using neutron diffraction. The evolution of the heat capacity for x=0.8...1 is then related to the hysteresis in the magnetic susceptibility. We conclude that for x>0.8 zinc paratacamite is a spin liquid without a spin gap, in which unpaired spins give rise to a macroscopically degenerate ground state manifold with increasingly glassy dynamics as x is lowered.

We report, through 17O NMR, an unambiguous local determination of the intrinsic kagome lattice spin susceptibility as well as that created around nonmagnetic defects arising from natural Zn/Cu exchange in the S=1/2 (Cu2+) herbertsmithite ZnCu3(OH)6Cl2 compound. The issue of a singlet-triplet gap is addressed. The magnetic response around a defect is found to markedly differ from that observed in nonfrustrated antiferromagnets. Finally, we discuss our relaxation measurements in the light of Cu and Cl NMR data and suggest a flat q dependence of the excitations.

We report muon spin rotation measurements on the S=1/2 (Cu2+) paratacamite ZnxCu4-x(OH)6Cl2 family. Despite a Weiss temperature of approximately -300 K, the x=1 compound is found to have no transition to a magnetic frozen state down to 50 mK as theoretically expected for the kagomé Heisenberg antiferromagnet. We find that the limit between a dynamical and a partly frozen ground state occurs around x=0.5. For x=1, we discuss the relevance to a singlet picture.

RESUMO

Hydrogels composed of poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (pHEMA) and water were investigated using differential thermal analysis (DTA) and adiabatic calorimetry (AC). The results show that the crystallization of water in the gels is a very gradual process, leading to the development of a metastable, non-equilibrium state. They are not in agreement with models that assume the actual presence of thermodynamically different classes of water in the gels, based on the abnormal melting behaviour of this water. The results indicate that the internal structure of these gels can be described as that of an elastic solution, in which the water molecules are distributed continuously over all possible orientations to and interactions with the polymer.

RESUMO

The freezing and melting behavior of water in poly hydroxy ethyl methacrylate (pHEMA) hydrogels of different cross-linker and water contents was investigated in relation to the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the gels. After prolonged cooling at -15 degrees C a constant amount of 1.7 mol water per monomeric unit did not freeze, regardless of both the cross-linker and the water content of the gels. At this water content and temperature, pHEMA gels were below their Tg, and the water molecules were prevented from diffusing to the ice crystals formed in the gel. Therefore, the inability of part of the water in pHEMA gels to freeze is not a thermodynamic phenomenon but is caused by kinetic factors.
