RESUMO

Objectives: This research was done to assess how much bone is lost around dental implants in smokers. Material and Method: There were 80 participants total in the study, 40 of whom were smokers (Group I) and 40 of who were non-smokers (Group II). By evaluating the patients' clinical and radiographic data, the marginal bone-level measurements were determined. The acquired information underwent statistical analysis. Results: Smokers were found to have worse overall clinical parameters than non-smokers (P 0.05). Smokers experience more marginal bone loss around implants than non-smokers do. Conclusion: Smoking has a negative impact on the outcome rate of dental implants.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) is one of the principle therapies for coronary artery disease, as it improves survival rate and quality of life (QoL). Polypropylene suture is commonly used in vascular and cardiac surgeries for anastomosis due to its long-term tensile strength and minimal tissue trauma. This study compared the clinical equivalence of Trulene® (Healthium Medtech Limited) and Prolene® (Ethicon-Johnson & Johnson) polypropylene sutures regarding incidence of myocardial infarction, stroke, renal failure and cardiac death (MACCE) occurring up to 26 weeks' period post-CABG surgery. METHODS: This multicenter, prospective, two-arm, parallel-group, randomized (1:1), single-blind study (n = 89) was conducted between August 2020 and September 2021. The primary endpoint, post-surgery cumulative incidence of MACCE was evaluated. In addition, anastomotic revision, surgical site infection (SSI), operative time, length of post-operative hospital stay, repeat revascularization, intraoperative suture handling characteristics, time taken to return to work and resume normal day to day activities, subject satisfaction score and QoL, and other adverse events were also recorded. RESULTS: A total of 80 (89.89%) males and 9 (10.11%) females participated in the study. No incidence of MACCE was recorded in any of the study participants. Non-significant difference was observed in anastomotic revision, SSI, operative time, post-operative hospital stay, revascularization, return to work and normal day-to-day activities, subject satisfaction score and QoL, and intraoperative handling parameters (except ease of passage) between the treatment groups, Trulene® and Prolene®. Compared to screening visit, proportion of subjects with 'no problems' for each QoL dimension and the mean visual analogue scale increased with each subsequent follow-up visit. CONCLUSION: Trulene® polypropylene suture is clinically equivalent to Prolene® polypropylene suture and is safe and effective for anastomosis construction in CABG surgery during a routine clinical procedure. RESUMO

Second-line injectables (SLIs) form an essential class of agents in the treatment of drug resistant (DR) tuberculosis (TB). However, their use is sometimes limited due to serious adverse events like ototoxicity and hearing loss, leading to permanent hearing loss if SLIs are continued. Globally as well as in India a wide variation in incidence of ototoxicity/hearing loss has been reported in patients with DR-TB. In this systematic analysis, we attempt to ascertain the ototoxicity of SLIs in Indian patients with multidrug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) wherein ototoxicity onset was assessed using audiometry performed at both pre- and post-SLI treatment initiation. Twenty two studies were identified based on the inclusion criteria. Ototoxicity was observed in 10.12% [349/3447] patients within 3.8 ± 2.6 months of treatment initiation when the ototoxicity was assessed either with or without audiometry assessment. Only five studies reported ototoxicity assessment with PTA at both pre- and post-SLI initiation and ototoxicity was observed in 27.01% (121/448) patients in these five studies. Sensorineural loss was observed in three studies (high frequency loss: capreomycin, 25.0% [1/4 patients]; amikacin, 19.7% [12/61]; kanamycin, 13.3% [22/166]; streptomycin, 11.8% [2/17]; flat loss: amikacin, 8.2% [5/61]; streptomycin, 5.9% [1/17]; kanamycin 4.8% [8/166]). Most of the patients experiencing ototoxicity were managed by discontinuing (49.6% [120/242]) or replacing SLI treatment (40.8% [49/120]). The study identified high prevalence of ototoxicity in Indian patients with DR-TB treated with SLI when ototoxicity was monitored regularly using PTA (27.01%), warranting a need to develop unified guidelines for monitoring ototoxicity, improving physician awareness and educating patients/caregivers for reporting symptoms of hearing loss.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Atypical antipsychotics appear to have the greatest potential to induce weight gain. Antipsychotic-induced weight gain is the one of main cause of non-compliance and discontinuation of treatment, often resulting in the relapse of psychosis. OBJECTIVE: To compare the weight gain between amisulpride and blonanserin treatment, in persons with psychosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty six subjects with psychosis attending psychiatry department at KR Hospital, Mysore were randomized into two equal groups. After obtaining informed consent, subjects of group I received amisulpride tablets 200 mg BD, and group II received blonanserin tablets 4 mg BD, for eight weeks. Body weight, Body Mass Index (BMI) and Waist Hip Ratio (WHR) were measured at baseline, 4 weeks and 8 weeks. RESULTS: The mean weight gain with amisulpride at 4 weeks was 2.73 kg (5.21%) and at 8 weeks was 4.34 kg (8.28%) from the baseline. The mean weight gain with blonanserin at 4 weeks was 1.77 kg (3.46%) and at 8 weeks was 3.46 kg (6.75%) from the baseline. The mean BMI increase at 8 weeks with amisulpride was 1.66 ± 0.56 and with blonanserin was 1.34 ± 0.77. The mean WHR increase at 8 weeks with amisulpride was 0.036 ± 0.026 and with blonanserin was 0.029 ± 0.020. There was statistically significant increase in weight, BMI and WHR associated with both blonanserin and amisulpride at 8 weeks. But there was no statistically significant difference in those parameters between blonanserin and amisulpride, at eight weeks. CONCLUSION: Even though there was no significant difference in the weight gain caused by blonanserin, in comparison with amisulpride, both these drugs individually caused significant weight gain at 8 weeks, which is in contrast with the earlier studies, which needs to be further evaluated.

RESUMO

Pesticides have become part of food protection since their inception. Endosulfan, an organochlorine insecticide, has been used against insect pests such as whiteflies, aphids, red spiders and mites. Methods of immunochemical assays have been devised for the determination and analysis of pesticides and commonly used for the analysis of contaminants in food, water, soil and body fluids. Chicken IgY antibodies raised against endosulfan haptens were used for the detection of endosulfan. We have compared colorimetric (CO) and chemiluminescence (CL) enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) techniques for the detection of endosulfan isomers in a food matrix. CL ELISA assay was found to be more sensitive than CO assay. The mean recovery was 81.2-95.6% for α- and ß-endosulfan-spiked food samples with 2.8-4.6% relative standard deviation. The detection of the endosulfan isomers was linear in the range 100 µg/mL-5 fg/mL, with a limit of detection at 100 µg/mL and 5 fg/mL for the CL ELISA method and 100 µg/mL and 1 ng/mL for the CO ELISA method respectively. These methods can be used for the rapid and reliable detection of organochlorine pesticide endosulfan.
