RESUMO

In this paper, we introduce a pulse characterization technique that is free of phase-matching constraints, exploiting transient absorption in solids as an ultrafast optical switch. Based on a pump-probe setup, this technique uses pump pulses of sufficient intensity to induce the switch, while the pulses to characterize are probing the transmissivity drop of the photoexcited material. This enables the characterization of low-intensity ultra-broadband pulses at the detection limit of the spectrometer and within the transparency range of the solid. For example, by using zinc selenide (ZnSe), pulses with wavelengths from 0.5 to 20 µm can be characterized, denoting five octaves of spectral range. Using ptychography, we retrieve the temporal profiles of both the probe pulse and the switch. To demonstrate this approach, we measure ultrashort pulses from a titanium-sapphire (Ti-Sa) amplifier, which are compressed using a hollow core fiber setup, as well as infrared to mid-infrared pulses generated from an optical parametric amplifier (OPA). The characterized pulses are centered at wavelengths of 0.77, 1.53, 1.75, 4, and 10 µm, down to sub-two optical cycles duration, exceeding an octave of bandwidth, and with energy as low as a few nanojoules.

RESUMO

We address the long-standing problem of anomalous growth observed in the terahertz (THz) energy yield from air plasmas created by two-color laser pulses, as the fundamental wavelength λ0 is increased. Using two distinct optical parametric amplifiers (OPAs), we report THz energies scaling like λ0α with large exponents 5.6≤α≤14.3, which departs from the growth in λ02 expected from photocurrent theory. By means of comprehensive 3D simulations, we demonstrate that the changes in the laser beam size, pulse duration, and phase-matching conditions in the second-harmonic generation process when tuning the OPA's carrier wavelength can lead to these high scaling powers. The value of the phase angle between the two colors reached at the exit of the doubling crystal turns out to be crucial and even explains non-monotonic behaviors in the measurements.

RESUMO

In this paper, a model of the beam propagation is developed according to the physical properties of THz waves used in THz computed tomography (CT) scan imaging. This model is first included in an acquisition simulator to observe and estimate the impact of the Gaussian beam intensity profile on the projection sets. Second, the model is introduced in several inversion methods as a convolution filter to perform efficient tomographic reconstructions of simulated and real acquired objects. Results obtained with three reconstruction methods (BFP, SART and OSEM) are compared to the techniques proposed in this paper. We will demonstrate an increase of the overall quality and accuracy of the 3D reconstructions.

RESUMO

A sequence of two femtosecond coherent pulses--a strong pi-polarized pulse and a weak sigma-polarized pulse--excite the S1/2-P1/2 transition of atomic rubidium in an optically dense vapor. The sigma pulse induces transitions between the adiabatic states with a coupling strength that is different for identically and oppositely light-shifted coupled states, and that can be modified by tuning the relative phase between the pulses. An efficient control of the medium gain for the sigma pulse is experimentally demonstrated. It is shown to be the result of interference between the absorption and the stimulated emission paths for sigma photons.
