Human breast milk samples from eight southeast Louisiana communities and one in Mississippi were analyzed by the purge and trap plus gas chromatography method for trihalomethane compounds (THMs). THM levels in drinking water samples from the same communities were compared but analysis of variance computations showed no significant correlation between the water and breast milk. THMs do not appear to be extracted from drinking water to concentrate in human breast milk.

RESUMO

Water samples were obtained from 128 private water wells surrounding eight oil field waste sites in Vermilion Parish. The specimens were analyzed for five heavy metals: barium, arsenic, chromium, lead, and cadmium. Half of the specimens were then analyzed for 16 volatile organic compounds. A blood sample was obtained from healthy adults drinking water from the wells tested for volatile organic compounds and this blood sample was also analyzed for volatile organic compounds. None of the water samples had levels of heavy metals or volatile organic compounds that exceeded the National Primary Drinking Water Standards. Barium levels in excess of 250 parts per billion suggested that styrene, toluene, and chloroform might be present. Blood levels of volatile organic compounds were significantly higher than could be accounted for by water consumption with levels in smokers significantly higher than in nonsmokers. These data suggest that as yet there is no contamination of ground water supplies around these sites. Volatile organic accumulation in humans probably occurs from a respiratory rather than from an oral route.

RESUMO

A simple, rapid, and sensitive procedure for the detection of 2,6-disubstituted anilines in the low nanogram range in blood is described. These aromatic amines were extracted from blood and converted to the corresponding N-hepta-fluorobutyramides, which were confirmed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The derivatives yielded excellent electron capture detection (ECD) responses that allowed the identification and detection of these compounds at the low nanogram level by glass capillary GC/ECD. The procedure, which was tested in an in vivo system, is suitable for pharmacokinetic studies and toxicological investigations, and may be adapted for the quantitative determination of other substituted anilines and similar compounds in blood and other body fluids.

RESUMO

A simple, rapid and sensitive method for the analysis of hexachlorocyclopentadiene (C5-Cl6) and octachlorocyclopentene (C5-Cl8) in blood and urine is described. The procedure requires 5.0 mL of blood or urine, and involves the isolation of the compounds from the sample by liquid-liquid extraction, followed by screening and quantification via glass-capillary column gas chromatography with electron-capture detection and confirmation by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The assays are suitable for the detection and identification of nanogram quantities of these compounds in body fluids with a lower detection limit of 50 ng/mL for blood and 10 ng/mL for urine.
