There are multiple treatment options for breast cancer (BC), including lumpectomy, chemo- and radiotherapy, complete mastectomy, and, when indicated, an axillary lymph node dissection. Such node dissections commonly lead the surgeon to encounter the intercostobrachial nerve (ICBN), which, if injured, leads to significant postoperative numbness of the upper arm. To assist in identifying the ICBN, we report a unilateral variation of a dual ICBN. The first ICBN (ICBN I) originates from the second intercostal space, as classically described in human anatomy. On the contrary, the second ICBN (ICBN II) originates from the second and third intercostal spaces. The anatomical knowledge of ICBN origin and its variations are crucial for axillary lymph node dissection in BC and other surgical interventions that involve the axillary region (e.g., regional nerve blocks). An iatrogenic injury of the ICBN has been associated with postoperative pain, paresthesia, and loss of upper extremity sensation in the dermatome supplied by this nerve. Therefore, maintaining the integrity of the ICBN is a worthy goal during axillary dissections in BC patients. Increasing the awareness of ICBN variants among surgeons reduces potential injuries, which would contribute to the BC patient's quality of life.

SQ109 is a tuberculosis drug candidate that has high potency against Mycobacterium tuberculosis and is thought to function at least in part by blocking cell wall biosynthesis by inhibiting the MmpL3 transporter. It also has activity against bacteria and protozoan parasites that lack MmpL3, where it can act as an uncoupler, targeting lipid membranes and Ca2+ homeostasis. Here, we synthesized 18 analogs of SQ109 and tested them against M. smegmatis, M. tuberculosis, M. abscessus, Bacillus subtilis, and Escherichia coli, as well as against the protozoan parasites Trypanosoma brucei, T. cruzi, Leishmania donovani, L. mexicana, and Plasmodium falciparum. Activity against the mycobacteria was generally less than with SQ109 and was reduced by increasing the size of the alkyl adduct, but two analogs were ∼4-8-fold more active than SQ109 against M. abscessus, including a highly drug-resistant strain harboring an A309P mutation in MmpL3. There was also better activity than found with SQ109 with other bacteria and protozoa. Of particular interest, we found that the adamantyl C-2 ethyl, butyl, phenyl, and benzyl analogs had 4-10× increased activity against P. falciparum asexual blood stages, together with low toxicity to a human HepG2 cell line, making them of interest as new antimalarial drug leads. We also used surface plasmon resonance to investigate the binding of inhibitors to MmpL3 and differential scanning calorimetry to investigate binding to lipid membranes. There was no correlation between MmpL3 binding and M. tuberculosis or M. smegmatis cell activity, suggesting that MmpL3 is not a major target in mycobacteria. However, some of the more active species decreased lipid phase transition temperatures, indicating increased accumulation in membranes, which is expected to lead to enhanced uncoupler activity.

Background: Arsenic trioxide is a chemical compound that has been used as a treatment for various diseases. Despite being potentially toxic, this compound has been used as a therapy to treat Acute Myeloid Leukemia and is being investigated as a possible treatment for different types of cancer. Objectives: The present review aims to describe the use and studies reported in the literature of Arsenic Trioxide as a possible therapeutic agent for Acute Myeloid Leukemia, Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia, Chronic Myeloid Leukemia, Multiple Myeloma, Myelodysplastic Syndrome, Hepatocellular Carcinoma, Lung Cancer, Neuroblastoma, Breast Cancer, Aplastic Hepatitis C, and HIV-1. Methods: A systematic review was conducted using databases (Elsevier, Google Scholar, PubMed) to compile documents published before December 2023. Results:Multiple pharmacological applications of arsenic trioxide have been reported to treat acute and chronic myeloid leukemia. Arsenic trioxide has been shown to inhibit angiogenesis, which helps treat multiple myeloma. Several studies have shown and suggested the effectiveness of arsenic trioxide as a treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma, lung cancer, neuroblastoma, prostate cancer, breast cancer, aplastic anemia, hepatitis C, and HIV-1. Conclusion: Despite potentially toxic effects, Arsenic compounds are therapeutic agents for multiple diseases, from syphilis to cancer. In recent years, more efficient ways have been investigated to deliver and find the specific dose to treat the disease, causing the fewest possible adverse effects.


Antecedentes: El trióxido de arsénico es un compuesto químico que se ha utilizado como tratamiento de diversas enfermedades. A pesar de ser potencialmente tóxico, este compuesto se ha utilizado como terapia para tratar la leucemia mieloide aguda y se está investigando como posible tratamiento para diferentes tipos de cáncer. Objetivos: La presente revisión pretende describir el uso del trióxido de arsénico como posible agente terapéutico para la leucemia mieloide aguda, la leucemia promielocítica aguda, la leucemia mieloide crónica, el mieloma múltiple, el síndrome mielodisplásico, el carcinoma hepatocelular, el cáncer de pulmón, el neuroblastoma, el cáncer de mama, la hepatitis C aplásica y el VIH-1. Métodos: Se realizó una revisión sistemática utilizando bases de datos (Elsevier, Google Scholar, PubMed) para recopilar documentos publicados antes de diciembre de 2023. Resultados: Se ha informado de múltiples aplicaciones farmacológicas del trióxido de arsénico para tratar la leucemia mieloide aguda y la leucemia mieloide crónica. Se ha demostrado que el trióxido de arsénico inhibe la angiogénesis, lo que resulta útil para el tratamiento del mieloma múltiple. Varios estudios han demostrado y sugerido la eficacia del trióxido de arsénico como tratamiento del carcinoma hepatocelular, el cáncer de pulmón, el neuroblastoma, el cáncer de próstata, el cáncer de mama, la anemia aplásica, la hepatitis C y el VIH-1. Conclusión: A pesar de tener un efecto potencialmente tóxico, los compuestos de arsénico destacan como agentes terapéuticos para múltiples enfermedades, desde la sífilis hasta el cáncer. En los últimos años, se han investigado formas más eficientes de administrar y encontrar la dosis específica para poder tratar la enfermedad, causando los menores efectos adversos posibles.

Obesity is the result of a complex combination of psychological, biological, and environmental factors. In this work, we evaluate whether obesity is related to eating habits, depressive symptomatology, as well as interleukin-8 and cortisol. A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out in 232 university students. All youths were surveyed to determine their eating habits and depressive symptomatology. Anthropometric measures and a blood sample were taken to determine its biochemical profile and its concentration of interleukin-8 and cortisol. The results show that interleukin-8 increase in the overfat group. The altered eating behaviors were frequent in the studied group; they were associated with the presence of obesity and the variation of interleukin-8 and cortisol. Besides, we found correlations of interleukin-8 with age, glucose, and lipid profile in the overfat group. In conclusion, these results indicate that high adiposity is related to changes in the concentrations of interleukin-8 and eating habits, confirming that obesity is the consequence of a complex network of various factors.

Ca2+ is an essential signaling messenger in all eukariotic cells, playing a pivotal role in many cellular functions as cell growth control (differentiation, fertilization and apoptosis), secretion, gene expression, enzyme regulation, among many others. This basic premise includes trypanosomatids as Trypanosoma cruzi and various species of Leishmania, the causative agents of Chagas disease and leishmaniasis respectively, where intracellular Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) has been demonstrated to be finely regulated. Nevertheless [Ca2+]i has been difficult to measure because of its very low cytoplasmic concentration (typically around 50-100 nM), when compared to the large concentration in the outside milieu (around 2 mM in blood). The development of intracellular fluorescent Ca2+-sensitive indicators has been of paramount importance to achieve this goal. The success was based on the synthesis of acetoximethylated derivative precursors, which allow the fluorescent molecules typically composed of many hydrophilic carboxyl groups responsible for its high affinity Ca2+-binding (and therefore very hydrophilic), to easily cross the plasma membrane. Once in the cell interior, unspecific esterases split the hydrophobic moiety from the fluorescent backbone structure, releasing the carboxyl groups, transforming it in turn to the acid form of the molecule, which remain trapped in the cytoplasm and regain its ability to fluoresce in a Ca2+-dependent manner. Among them, Fura-2 is by far the most used, because it is a ratiometric (two different wavelength excitation and one emission) Ca2+ indicator with a Ca2+ affinity compatible with the [Ca2+]i. This protocol essentially consists in loading exponential phase parasites with Fura-2 and recording changes in [Ca2+]i by mean of a double wavelength spectrofluorometer. This technique allows the acquisition of valuable information about [Ca2+]i changes in real time, as a consequence of diverse stimuli or changes in conditions, as addition of drugs or different natural modulators.

Abstract: Model-based research has been enhancing the positive effectiveness of both Sport Education and Step-Game Approach on students' technical, tactical and game-play improvements. Nevertheless, the analysis of students' declarative understanding on the game in this area was scarce. This study examined their declarative understanding on the game during their participation in a hybrid Sport Education/Step-Game Approach teaching unit. Ninety-six students with no previous experience in either model participated in a 24-lesson volleyball season. A video-based test was developed to assess students' declarative game understanding and applied before and after the teaching unit. Results showed that they improved in all tactical content taught during the unit. These results can find explanation on Sport Education features such as cooperative team practices and the possibility for being in roles other than players. Beyond that, instructional procedures considered by the Step-Game-Approach stimulated the development of students' tactical awareness.


Resumo: A investigação nos modelos instrucionais tem enaltecido o impacto positivo do Modelo de Educação Desportiva e do Modelo de Abordagem Progressiva ao Jogo no desenvolvimento técnico e tático dos alunos, assim como no desempenho geral no jogo. Todavia, a análise do conhecimento tático dos alunos neste âmbito tem sido escassa. O presente estudo tem como propósito analisar o conhecimento tático declarativo dos alunos durante uma unidade híbrida desses dois modelos na modalidade de voleibol. Noventa e seis alunos sem experiência prévia nos dois modelos participaram numa época desportiva com 24 aulas. Foi desenvolvido um teste de vídeo para analisar o desenvolvimento do conhecimento tático declarativo dos alunos, o qual foi aplicado antes e depois da unidade. Todos os alunos melhoraram nos conteúdos táticos ensinados, o que pode encontrar explicação no trabalho colaborativo em equipas, na possibilidade dos alunos participarem noutros papéis para além de jogadores e nos processos instrucionais, características dos dois modelos.


Resumen: La investigación en los modelos de instrucción ha enaltecido el impacto positivo del Modelo de Educación Deportiva y del Modelo de Aproximación Progresiva al Juego en el desarrollo técnico y táctico de los alumnos, así como también en el desempeño general en el juego. Sin embargo, el análisis del conocimiento táctico de los alumnos en este ámbito ha sido escaso. El presente estudio tiene como propósito analizar el conocimiento táctico declarado de los alumnos durante una unidad híbrida de estos dos modelos en la modalidad de Voleibol. 96 alumnos sin experiencia previa en los dos modelos participaron en una temporada deportiva con 24 clases. Se desarrolló un test de vídeo para analizar el desarrollo del conocimiento táctico declarado de los alumnos, que se aplicó antes y después de la unidad. Todos los alumnos mejoraron en los contenidos tácticos enseñados, lo que puede encontrar explicación en el trabajo colaborativo en equipos, en la posibilidad de que los alumnos participen en otros papeles además de como jugadores y en los procesos de instrucción, características de los dos modelos.
