RESUMO

A series of highly substituted 1,2-azaborinines, including a phenylene-bridged bis-1,2-azaborinine, was synthesized from the reaction of 1,2-azaborete rhodium complexes with variously substituted alkynes. 1-Rhoda-3,2-azaborole complexes, which are accessible by phosphine addition to the corresponding 1,2-azaborete complexes, were also found to be suitable precursors for the synthesis of 1,2-azaborinines and readily reacted with alkynyl-substituted 1,2-azaborinines to generate new regioisomers of bi-1,2-azaborinines, which feature directly connected aromatic rings. Their molecular structures, which can be viewed as boron-nitrogen isosteres of biphenyls, show nearly perpendicular 1,2-azaborinine rings. The new method using rhodacycles instead of 1,2-azaborete complexes as precursors is shown to be more effective, allowing the synthesis of a wider range of 1,2-azaborinines.

RESUMO

The 2-fold reduction of B2X4(NHC)2 (X = Cl, Br, I; NHC = (un)saturated N-heterocyclic carbene) yields the corresponding green-colored 1,2-dihalodiborenes B2X2(NHC)2, the 11B NMR resonances of which are strongly upfield-shifted upon descending the halide group. The diborenes crystallize as the trans isomers, with relatively short B═B double bonds (1.513(9) to 1.568(4) Å). Cyclic voltammetric experiments with these diborenes reveal reversible one-electron oxidation processes to the corresponding diboron radical cation (E1/2 = -1.16 to -1.50 V); the reducing power of B2X2(NHC)2 increasing with the electronegativity of the halide and for the less π-accepting unsaturated NHCs. The main UV-vis absorption (393-463 nm), which corresponds mainly to a highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) → lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) transition, undergoes a blueshift upon descending the halide group and shows some dependence on the stereoelectronics of the NHC ligands. Computational analyses show that the HOMO of B2X2(NHC)2 is mostly localized on the B═B π bond, with the contribution from halide p orbitals decreasing down the group, and the saturated NHCs affording some π-bonding delocalization over the B-CNHC bonds. The calculated HOMO and LUMO energies decrease upon descending the halide group, while the HOMO-LUMO gap also decreases, correlating well with the cyclovoltammetry and UV-vis data. The reactions of B2Br2(NHC)2 with elemental sulfur and red selenium lead to the formation of the corresponding diborathiiranes and seleniranes, respectively, which were characterized by NMR and UV-vis spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and X-ray diffraction analyses. In one case, an additional one-electron oxidation yields a unique cyclic B2Se radical cation. Computational analyses show that the localization of the HOMO and HOMO - 1 of the diboraseleniranes is inverted compared to the diborathiiranes.

RESUMO

Boroles are attracting broad interest for their myriad and diverse applications, including in synthesis, small molecule activation and functional materials. Their properties and reactivity are closely linked to the cyclic conjugated diene system, which has been shown to participate in cycloaddition reactions, such as the Diels-Alder reaction with alkynes. The reaction steps leading to boranorbornadienes, borepins and tricyclic boracyclohexenes from the thermal reaction of boroles with alkynes are seemingly well understood as judged from the literature. Herein, we question the long-established mechanistic picture of pericyclic rearrangements by demonstrating that seven-membered borepins (i. e., heptaphenylborepin and two derivatives substituted with a thienyl and chloride substituent on boron) exist in a dynamic equilibrium with the corresponding bicyclic boranorbornadienes, the direct Diels-Alder products, but are not isolable products from the reactions. Heating gradually converts the isomeric mixtures into fluorescent tricyclic boracyclohexenes, the most stable isomers in the series. Results from mechanistic DFT calculations reveal that the tricyclic compounds derive from the boranorbornadienes and not the borepins, which were previously believed to be intermediates in purely pericyclic processes.

RESUMO

2,2'-Bipyridyl is shown to spontaneously abstract a borylene fragment (R-B:) from various hypovalent boron compounds. This process is a redox reaction in which the bipyridine is reduced and becomes a dianionic substituent bound to boron through its two nitrogen atoms. Various transition metal-borylene complexes and diboranes, as a well as a diborene, take part in this reaction. In the latter case, our results show an intriguing example of the homolytic cleavage of a B═B double bond.

RESUMO

We demonstrate that, in analogy to transition-metal carbene chemistry, [(OC)5Mo[double bond, length as m-dash]BN(SiMe3)2] facilitates intermolecular transfer of the borylene [:BN(SiMe3)2], which ultimately undergoes insertion into C-H bonds under very mild conditions. The one-pot multiple functionalization of the cyclopentadienyl rings of tungstenocene dihydride is demonstrated using this approach.

RESUMO

We present herein an in-depth study of complexes in which a molecule containing a boron-boron triple bond is bound to tellurate cations. The analysis allows the description of these salts as true π complexes between the B-B triple bond and the tellurium center. These complexes thus extend the well-known Dewar-Chatt-Duncanson model of bonding to compounds made up solely of p block elements. Structural, spectroscopic and computational evidence is offered to argue that a set of recently reported heterocycles consisting of phenyltellurium cations complexed to diborynes bear all the hallmarks of π-complexes in the π-complex/metallacycle continuum envisioned by Joseph Chatt. Described as such, these compounds are unique in representing the extreme of a metal-free continuum with conventional unsaturated three-membered rings (cyclopropenes, azirenes, borirenes) occupying the opposite end.

RESUMO

A set of diboryldiborenes are prepared by the mild, catalyst-free, room-temperature diboration of the B-B triple bonds of doubly base-stabilized diborynes. Two of the product diboryldiborenes are found to be air- and water-stable in the solid state, an effect that is attributed to their high crystallinity and extreme insolubility in a wide range of solvents.

RESUMO

A series of 22 new bis(phosphine), bis(carbene), and bis(isonitrile) tetrahalodiborane adducts has been synthesized, either by direct adduct formation with highly sensitive B2 X4 precursors (X=Cl, Br, I) or by ligand exchange at stable B2 X4 (SMe2 )2 precursors (X=Cl, Br) with labile dimethylsulfide ligands. The isolated compounds have been fully characterized using NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and, for 20 of these compounds, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, revealing an unexpected variation in the bonding motifs. In addition to the classical B2 X4 L2 diborane(4) bis-adducts, certain more sterically demanding carbene ligands induce a halide displacement which led to the first halide-bridged monocationic diboron species, [B2 X3 L2 ]A (A=BCl4 , Br, I). Furthermore, low-temperature 1:1 reactions of B2 Cl4 with sterically demanding N-heterocyclic carbenes led to the formation of kinetically unstable mono-adducts, one of which was structurally characterized. A comparison of the NMR spectra and structural data of new and literature-known bis-adducts shows several trends pertaining to the nature of the halides and the stereoelectronic properties of the Lewis bases employed.

RESUMO

The first spontaneous, metal-free, room-temperature hydrogen transfer from ammonia borane to an iminoborane is reported. Mechanistic studies of the reaction indicate a concerted transfer of H+ and H- from donor to acceptor with an activation energy far below those of comparable concerted transfer hydrogenations. This reaction was employed in the syntheses and isolation of new B,N-disubstituted aminoboranes, a comparatively rare subset within the aminoborane family. This successful transfer hydrogenation to a highly dehydrogenated BN system may serve as a starting point for the design of new systems capable of reversible dehydrogenation/rehydrogenation.

RESUMO

Precatalysts active for the dehydropolymerisation of primary amine-boranes are generally based on mid or late transition metal. We have found that the activity of the precatalyst system formed from CpR2TiCl2 and 2nBuLi towards the dehydrogenation of the secondary amine-borane Me2NH·BH3, to yield the cyclic diborazane [Me2N-BH2]2, increases dramatically with increasing electron-donating character of the cyclopentadienyl rings (CpR). Application of the most active precatalyst system (CpR = η-C5Me5) to the primary amine-borane MeNH2·BH3 enabled the first synthesis of high molar mass poly(N-methylaminoborane), [MeNH-BH2] n , the BN analogue of polypropylene, by an early transition metal such as catalyst. Significantly, unlike other dehydropolymerization precatalysts for MeNH2·BH3 such as [Ir(POCOP)H2], skeletal nickel, and [Rh(COD)Cl]2, the Ti precatalyst system was also active towards a range of substrates including BzNH2·BH3 (Bz = benzyl) yielding high molar mass polymer. Moreover, in contrast to the late transition metal catalysed dehydropolymerisation of MeNH2·BH3 and also the Ziegler-Natta polymerisation of olefins, studies indicate that the Ti-catalyzed dehydropolymerization reactions proceed by a step-growth rather than a chain-growth mechanism.

RESUMO

A family of doubly isonitrile-stabilized terphenyl borylenes could be obtained by addition of three equivalents of isonitrile to the corresponding Cr and W terminal terphenyl-borylene complexes. The mechanism of isonitrile- and carbon-monoxide-induced borylene liberation was investigated computationally and found to be significantly exergonic in both cases. Furthermore, addition of a small N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) to a terminal Cr borylene complex results in release of an NHC-stabilized borylene carbonyl species, whereas the analogous reaction with bulkier phosphines results in metal-centered substitution.

RESUMO

Molecules containing multiple bonds between atoms-most often in the form of olefins-are ubiquitous in nature, commerce, and science, and as such have a huge impact on everyday life. Given their prominence, over the last few decades, frequent attempts have been made to perturb the structure and reactivity of multiply-bound species through bending and twisting. However, only modest success has been achieved in the quest to completely twist double bonds in order to homolytically cleave the associated π bond. Here, we present the isolation of double-bond-containing species based on boron, as well as their fully twisted diradical congeners, by the incorporation of attached groups with different electronic properties. The compounds comprise a structurally authenticated set of diamagnetic multiply-bound and diradical singly-bound congeners of the same class of compound.

RESUMO

A series of NHC-supported 1,2-dithienyldiborenes was synthesized from the corresponding (dihalo)thienylborane NHC precursors. NMR and UV/Vis spectroscopic data, as well as X-ray crystallographic analyses, were used to assess the electronic and steric influences on the B=B double bond of various NHCs and electron-donating substituents on the thienyl ligands. Crystallographic data showed that the degree of coplanarity of the diborene core and thienyl groups is highly dependent on the sterics of the substituents. Furthermore, any increase in the electron-donating ability of the substituents resulted in the destabilization of the HOMO and greater instability of the resulting diborenes.

RESUMO

The combination of electron-rich diaminoalkynes and ditopic Lewis acids diboranes(4) leads to unusual uncatalysed diboration reactions involving internal Lewis adduct, zwitterion, and C-C bond formation. The products are novel multicyclic, charge-separated compounds with intramolecular dative bonds.

RESUMO

The diborene 1 was synthesized by reduction of a mixture of 1,2-di-9-anthryl-1,2-dibromodiborane(4) (6) and trimethylphosphine with potassium graphite. The X-ray structure of 1 shows the two anthryl rings to be parallel and their π(C14 ) systems perpendicular to the diborene π(B=B) system. This twisted conformation allows for intercalation of the relatively high-lying π(B=B) orbital and the low-lying π* orbital of the anthryl moiety with no significant conjugation, resulting in a small HOMO-LUMO gap (HLG) and ultimately a C-H borylation of the anthryl unit. The HLG of 1 was estimated to be 1.57 eV from the onset of the long wavelength band in its UV/Vis absorption spectrum (THF, λonset =788 nm). The oxidation of 1 with elemental selenium afforded diboraselenirane 8 in quantitative yield. By oxidative abstraction of one phosphine ligand by another equivalent of elemental selenium, the B-B and C1 -H bonds of 8 were cleaved to give the cyclic 1,9-diborylanthracene 9.

RESUMO

Although the metathesis of metal-boron double bonds with elemental chalcogenides is an established process, no similar reactivity has been observed with element-nitrogen bonds. Such a reaction would provide a new route to iminoborane compounds (RB≡NR'), which have recently experienced renewed synthetic interest. Herein, we present the first observation of M=B/C=N metathesis reactions, which led to the isolation of a stable iminoborane in addition to further iminoborane cycloaddition products.

RESUMO

Electronic and steric factors have been investigated in the thermal ring expansion of boroles with organic azides, a reaction that provides access to highly arylated 1,2-azaborinines, BN analogues of benzene. Reactions of a variety of boroles and organic azides demonstrate that the synthetic method is quite general in furnishing 1,2-azaborinines, but the respective reaction rates reveal a strong dependence on the substituents on the two reactants. The products have been characterized by UV/Vis, electrochemical, NMR, and X-ray diffraction methods, clarifying their constitutions and highlighting substituent effects on the electronic structure of the 1,2-azaborinines. Furthermore, analysis of several possible mechanistic pathways for 1,2-azaborinine formation, as studied by DFT, revealed that a two-step mechanism involving azide-borole adduct formation and nitrene insertion is favored.

RESUMO

Herein are reported the first π-complexes of compounds with boron-boron triple bonds with transition metals, in this case CuI. Three different compounds were isolated that differ in the number of copper atoms bound to the BB unit. Metalation of the B-B triple bonds causes lengthening of the B-B and B-CNHC bonds, as well as large upfield shifts of the 11B NMR signals, suggesting greater orbital interactions between the boron and transition metal atoms than those observed with recently published diboryne/alkali metal cation complexes. In contrast to previously reported fluorescent copper(I) π-complexes of boron-boron double bonds, the Cun-π-diboryne compounds (n = 2, 3) show intense phosphorescence in the red to near-IR region from their triplet excited states, according to their microsecond lifetimes, with quantum yields of up to 58%. While the Cu diborene bond is dominated by electrostatic interactions, giving rise to S1 and T1 states of pure IL(π-π*) nature, DFT studies show that the CuI π-complexes of diborynes reported herein exhibit enhanced metal d orbital contributions to HOMO and HOMO-1, which results in S1 and T1 having significant MLCT character, enabling strong spin-orbit coupling for highly efficient intersystem-crossing S1 → Tn and phosphorescence T1 → S0.

RESUMO

The reaction of the vicinal biscarbenoid Pip-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-Pip with dimethyltin dichloride yields a unique tetraamino-substituted cyclobutadienyl system featuring a dative C-Sn interaction. DFT investigation of the reaction mechanism revealed that coordination of the stannyl fragment to the nucleophilic carbon leads to a metal-stabilised zwitterion, allowing for [2+2] cycloaddition under thermal conditions. The compound features a homoaromatic π-system comprising the three sp2-hybridised carbon atoms of the four-membered ring as a consequence of charge separation.
