Background: Inadequate intake of food is one of the causes of malnutrition and has significant impact on the deaths of children in low-income countries. Community-based management of acute malnutrition was endorsed as a strategy to alleviate such burdens of child morbidity and mortality associated with malnutrition. Despite outpatient therapeutic program has decentralized to health post level, there is still a lack of adequate evidence regarding the recovery rates from outpatient therapeutic program at health post level in Ethiopia. In addition, the previous body of articles did not show the local situations, particularly the recovery rates of severe acute malnutrition children from outpatient therapeutic program in the central Gondar zone, Ethiopia. Aim: This study aimed to assess recovery rate and associated factors among severe acute malnourished children enrolled to outpatient therapeutic program at health posts of Central Gondar zone, Ethiopia. Methods: This study was a facility-based retrospective cross-sectional study conducted on 349 children who had managed for severe acute malnutrition in outpatient therapeutic program in Central Gondar zone from March to May 2021. A structured and pre-tested data extraction checklist adapted from literatures was used to collect the data. The children were selected using consecutive sampling from 39 health posts. Data were entered, cleaned, coded and analyzed using Stata version 14 software. Binary logistic regression was fitted to identify factors associated with recovery rate from outpatient therapeutic program. Adjusted odds ratio with 95% confidence interval and p-value <0.05 were used to declare the variables statistically significant with the recovery rate from outpatient therapeutic program. Results: The successful recovery rate for severe acute malnourished children admitted to outpatient therapeutic program was 74.2% (95% CI: 69.3, 78.6). False recovery, death, default, non-responder and medical transfer out rates were 12.6%, 8.6%, 2.9%, 0.9% and 0.9%, respectively. In addition, the average weight gain of children was 4.4 g/kg/day for the length of stays, and the average length of stay was also 6.7 (±1.3SD) weeks. Breastfeeding status (AOR = 1.72; 95% CI: 1.05, 2.83), antibiotics (amoxicillin) provision (AOR = 2.14; 95% CI: 1.07, 4.25) and vitamin A supplementation (AOR = 1.93; 95% CI: 1.13, 3.30) were positively associated with the recovery rate of severe acute malnourished children admitted to outpatient therapeutic program. Conclusion: In this study, we found that the recovery, death and default rates were in the acceptable ranges of sphere standards. Therefore, health extension workers shall manage to shape service providers of outpatient therapeutic program with severe acute malnutrition management protocol. Special attention was also needed to build capacity of health extension workers to alleviate knowledge gaps on children enrolled to and discharge from outpatient therapeutic program at health posts. Dietary counselling is essentially required to improve maternal diets, which can affect the nutritional status of breastmilk.

BACKGROUND: Road traffic injury (RTI) is one of the main reasons for trauma-related admission in Ethiopian hospitals. Nationally representative data is needed to develop and implement the public health emergency management strategy. Therefore, this study was aimed to estimate the national pooled prevalence of RTI among trauma patients in Ethiopia. METHODS: PubMed, Excerpta Medica Database (EMBASE), psycEXTRA, and Google Scholar databases were searched. Heterogeneity of studies was assessed using the I2 statistics. Publication bias was checked by using funnel plot and Egger's regression test. The DerSimonian and Laird's random-effects model was used to estimate the pooled prevalence. Subgroup analysis was conducted by age and region. The trend of RTI estimated as well. RESULTS: The pooled prevalence of RTI among trauma patients in Ethiopia was 31.5% (95% CI: 25.4%, 37.7%). Regional subgroup analysis showed that the pooled prevalence of RTI was 58.3% in the region of southern, nation, nationalities, and peoples (SNNPR) and 33.3% in Addis Ababa. Subgroup analysis based on patients age showed that the pooled prevalence of RTI was 51.7% in adults, 14.2% in children, and 32.6% in all age group. The time-trend analysis has shown an increasing burden of RTI in Ethiopian hospitals. CONCLUSION: The burden of RTI among trauma patients was high. Therefore, strengthening road safety management throughout the country is needed to reduce RTI.

BACKGROUND: In Ethiopia, prenatal anemia is a major public health concern affecting both the health of the woman and babies. The World Health Organization recommends to conduct repeated prevalence studies concerning prenatal anemia . However, there is no recent evidence on the magnitude of the prenatal anemia. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and the associated factors of prenatal anemia among women attending the Antenatal Care Clinic at the University of Gondar Referral Hospital. METHODS: A facility-based cross-sectional quantitative study was conducted among 362 participants from June 03-July 08, 2017, at the University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Northwest Ethiopia. The systematic random sampling technique was employed. Structured interviewer administered questionnaire was used. Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) screening was conducted. Nutritional status of the participants was assessed. Blood sample was collected by capillary tube . Intestinal parasite was examined by stool wet mount test. HIV serostatus was detected. Anemia was defined as hemoglobin concentration below 11 g/dl. The multivariable logistic regression model was employed to identify associated factors and to control the possible effects of confounders. RESULT: The prevalence of anemia was 22.2% (95% CI: 18.11, 27.1%). The highest odds of anemia were observed among pregnant women with family size of >five [AOR = 3 (95% CI: 1.03, 8.65)], unprotected water source users, [AOR = 4.09 (95% CI: 1.75, 9.55)], HIV infected [AOR = 2.94(95% CI: 1.37, 6.35)], and multigravida women [AOR = 3.5 (95% CI: 1.35, 9.17)]. CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS: The prevalence of anemia among pregnant women attending the University of Gondar Referral Hospital was a moderate public health problem. Unprotected water source, large family size, Human Immunodeficiency Virus infection, and repeated pregnancies were factors that predicted anemia. Thus, prevention of Human Immunodeficiency Virus infection, family planning utilization, and accessing pure water are recommended.

BACKGROUND: The burden of mother-to-child transmission rate of HIV is high and risk factors are common in Ethiopia. This systematic review and meta-analysis intended to provide the pooled estimation of mother-to-child transmission rate and its risk factors in Ethiopia. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Google Scholar, EMBASE and Web of Science electronic databases for all available references. We included observational studies including case-control, cohort, and cross-sectional studies. The search was further limited to studies conducted in Ethiopia and publish in English. Heterogeneity was checked using the I2 statistic. Egger's test and the funnel plot were used to assess publication bias. A meta-analysis using a weighted inverse variance random-effects model was performed. RESULTS: A total of 18 studies with 6253 individuals were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. Of these, 14 studies with 4624 individuals were used to estimate the prevalence. The estimated pooled prevalence of mother-to-child transmission of HIV was 11.4% (95% CI = 9.1-13.7). The pooled adjusted odds ratio (AOR) of mother-to-child transmission of HIV for the infants from rural area was 3.8 (95% CI = 1.4 to 6.3), infants delivered at home was 3.2 (95% CI = 1.2 to 5.2), infant didn't take antiretroviral prophylaxis was 5.8 (95% CI = 1.5 to 10.3), mother didn't take antiretroviral prophylaxis was 6.1 (95% CI = 2.5 to 9.6), mothers didn't receive PMTCT intervention was 5.1 (95% CI = 1.6, 8.6), and on mixed feeding was 4.3 (95% CI = 1.8 to 6.7). CONCLUSIONS: This systematic review and meta-analysis showed that mother-to-child transmission rate of HIV was high in Ethiopia. Being from the rural residence, home delivery, not taking antiretroviral prophylaxis, the absence of PMTCT intervention, and mixed infant feeding practices increased the risk of HIV transmission.
