RESUMO

Vegetable cultivation stands as a pivotal element in the agricultural transformation illustrating a complex interplay between technological advancements, evolving environmental perspectives, and the growing global demand for food. This comprehensive review delves into the broad spectrum of developments in modern vegetable cultivation practices. Rooted in historical traditions, our exploration commences with conventional cultivation methods and traces the progression toward contemporary practices emphasizing the critical shifts that have refined techniques and outcomes. A significant focus is placed on the evolution of seed selection and quality assessment methods underlining the growing importance of seed treatments in enhancing both germination and plant growth. Transitioning from seeds to the soil, we investigate the transformative journey from traditional soil-based cultivation to the adoption of soilless cultures and the utilization of sustainable substrates like biochar and coir. The review also examines modern environmental controls highlighting the use of advanced greenhouse technologies and artificial intelligence in optimizing plant growth conditions. We underscore the increasing sophistication in water management strategies from advanced irrigation systems to intelligent moisture sensing. Additionally, this paper discusses the intricate aspects of precision fertilization, integrated pest management, and the expanding influence of plant growth regulators in vegetable cultivation. A special segment is dedicated to technological innovations, such as the integration of drones, robots, and state-of-the-art digital monitoring systems, in the cultivation process. While acknowledging these advancements, the review also realistically addresses the challenges and economic considerations involved in adopting cutting-edge technologies. In summary, this review not only provides a comprehensive guide to the current state of vegetable cultivation but also serves as a forward-looking reference emphasizing the critical role of continuous research and the anticipation of future developments in this field.

Sulfur deficiency severely limits soybean growth, inhibiting the rhizobia nitrogenase and soybean protein synthesis. This study assessed the impact of sulfur fertilization and rhizobia inoculation on soybean growth and nitrogen fixation through bacterial culture and hydroponic experiments. We selected three rhizobia strains for bacterial cultures and used six sulfur levels. The test demonstrated severe inhibition of Rhizobium USDA110 growth without sulfur. In hydroponic experiment, we employed five sulfur levels with USDA110 as the inoculum strain. Soybean growth, nitrogen fixation, yield, and root morphology-related parameters, and root nodule growth, were significantly inhibited without sulfur. Following Rhizobium inoculation, low sulfur concentrations (0.15-0.60 mM) stimulated early-stage (V9) root growth and increased shoot nitrogen accumulation, but inhibited root growth at R5 stage. Furthermore, Rhizobium inoculation notably enhanced soybean growth, nitrogen fixation, and yield, especially within the recommended low sulfur concentration range (0.15-0.30 mM). The maximum nodule nitrogenase activity at R5 stage and highest yield was recorded at a 0.3 mM sulfur concentration with Rhizobium inoculation, which was 9.51-1222.07% higher than other treatments. These findings highlight that low sulfur concentration and rhizobia inoculation enhance soybean growth, nitrogen fixation, and yield but reduce soybean root efficacy, increasing reliance on root nodules.

The application of slow-release fertilizer is an effective way to satisfy the demand for nutrients of crops. The objective of present study was to investigate the microbial community characteristics in rice rhizosphere soil under different fertilization modes of slow-release fertilizer. Three fertilization modes of slow-release fertilizer, i.e., (CK) manually broadcasted on the soil surface at 300 kg·ha-1 before transplanting and then same fertilizer rate was applied at the same way one week after transplanting; (SF) 10 cm depth mechanized placement at 600 kg·ha-1 during the transplanting; (DSF) 10 cm depth mechanized placement at 480 kg·ha-1 during the transplanting, were adopt in the field experiment. The results showed that SF and DSF treatments promoted richness (ACE and Chao1 values) and diversity (Shannon value) of rice rhizosphere microorganisms compared with CK treatment. Compared with CK, SF treatment increased relative abundances of Planctomycetes and decreased relative abundance of Nitrospirae, DSF treatments increased relative abundances of Deltaproteobacteria. Moreover, higher relative abundances of Paenibacillus and Sphingomonas were recorded in DSF treatment than CK. In addition, the partial factor productivity (PFP) deep placement of slow-release fertilizer treatment was significantly higher than that of CK treatment. DSF treatment increased the yield by 16.61% compared with CK treatment while reducing fertilizer input by 20%. In conclusion, compared with broadcasting, deep placement of slow-release fertilizer could improve the structure, distribution, and diversity of the microbial community in rice rhizosphere soil, and increase the utilization rate of fertilizers, and increase rice yield.

Mantis shrimp waste (Oratosquilla oratoria) is a good source of chitin. The applicability of microwave-assisted organic acids and proteases for extracting chitin from mantis shrimp shell waste was evaluated, and the extracted-chitin was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Moreover, the effects of nanochitin on the growth of pak choi (Brassica campestris L.ssp.) were also investigated. The results indicated that alkaline protease (4000 U/g, microwave heating at 60 °C, 10 min) and malic acid (5%, 320 W, 5 min) exhibited excellent potential for deproteinizing and demineralizing shells. The deproteinization and demineralization yields were 92.78% and 94.11%, respectively, and the chitin yield was 15.6%. The extracted-chitin had a highly porous structure and exhibited excellent crystallinity and thermostability compared with chitin prepared by traditional chemical methods. Furthermore, 0.003% nanochitin significantly enhanced photosynthesis, which improved the pak choi fresh weight by 22.94%, and improved the accumulation of isothiocyanates in its leaves. This study provides an alternative approach for the high-value utilization of mantis shrimp waste, and reveals the potential of chitin for application in agricultural production.
