RESUMO

Mucormycosis is a rare fungal infection belonging to Mucorales order fungi. Rhino-cerebral form is more noted in patients with diabetes mellitus, but pulmonary mucormycosis is a rare manifestation with hematological malignancy, malignant tumors, and transplant recipient patients. Aspergillus species are also known to cause allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis, aspergilloma, chronic pulmonary aspergillosis, and invasive aspergillosis in immunocompromised individuals. We report a case of pulmonary mucormycosis superimposed with aspergillus infection presenting in an immunocompromised patient with metastatic prostate cancer on chemotherapy, initially misdiagnosed as aspergillus infection.

Aplasia of the lung is an uncommon congenital anomaly that can resemble several common illnesses radiologically and presents as an opaque hemithorax with ipsilateral displacement of the mediastinum. This case scenario involves a young woman who has been experiencing recurrent pulmonary tract infections and worsening dyspnea since childhood, presenting as pneumonic consolidation on a chest X-ray. The case explores the importance of lung scans, CT pulmonary angiography, and bronchoscopy to elicit the absence of lung parenchyma on one side.

The review delves into the physiological underpinnings, measurement techniques, and factors influencing CO diffusion capacity, emphasizing its pivotal role in assessing alveolar gas exchange efficiency. Key findings elucidate correlations between altered diffusion capacity and the severity of COPD, providing clinicians with valuable insights into disease progression. Considerations of age, gender, and ethnic disparities in normal CO diffusion capacity values highlight the importance of personalized interpretations. The clinical implications extend beyond diagnosis, influencing COPD management and prognostication, with potential applications in predicting treatment response.
