RESUMO

Lumbar intervertebral disc herniation (LDH) is a common and frequently-occurring disease, which usually causes lumbar and leg pain. Studies have shown that acupuncture can improve the symptoms of LDH patients. In the present paper, we summarize the progress of researches on the mechanisms of acupuncture underlying improvement of symptoms of LDH in recent 10 years from 1) delaying the intervertibral disc degeneration (by down-regulating the expressions of matrix metalloproteinase ï¼»MMPï¼½-3 and MMP-4, up-regulating the expressions of diosaccharides and polyglycoprotein, inhibiting apoptosis and promoting mitochondrial autophagy of nucleus pulposus cells, etc.), 2) maintaining spinal column stability (by relieving rachiasmus and improving lumbar flexor and extensor muscle strength, lowering the degree of polyfidus edema and fat infiltration, and restoring the biomechanics of the spine), 3) regulating inflammation (by inhibiting the production of proinflammatory factors and increasing the production of anti-inflammatory factors, etc.), 4) regulating immune response (by promoting the activity of T cells and other immune cells, lowering serum levels of MMP-3, transforming growth factor-ß1 and prostaglandin E2, raising serum levels of IgA, IgG and IgM to improve immune function ), 5) modulating neural structure and function (by promoting myelin regeneration of sciatic nerve fibers, and reducing the edema of Schwann cells' cytoplasm and mitochondria, and improving neural ultrastructure, and sensory and motor functions of peripheral nerves, etc.), 6) relieving lumbar pain (by down-regulating expression of Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase and activation of lumbar spinal cord glial cells, blocking nociceptive signal conduction, regulating the levels of pain-related factors, etc.), and 7) improving local microcirculation. These results may provide scientific evidence for acupuncture treatment of LDH.

RESUMO

The flavonoids in Panax notoginseng were qualitatively analyzed by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole-time of flight mass spectrometry(UPLC-Q-TOF-MS), and the content of three main flavonoids in P. notoginseng of different specifications and grades collected from different habitats was determined by HPLC-DAD. Flavonoids and anthocyanins were analyzed by UPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS in the positive and negative ion modes, respectively. Twelve flavonoid glycosides and one anthocyanin glycoside in P. notoginseng were identified, but no flavonoid aglycones were detected. Among them, 12 compounds were identified in the underground part of P. notoginseng for the first time and eight compounds were first reported in this plant. Moreover, six and four compounds were identified in the Panax genus and the Araliaceae family for the first time, respectively. A method for simultaneous determination of three flavonoids in P. notoginseng was established by HPLC-DAD. The content of flavonoids in 721 P. notoginseng samples of 124 specifications and grades collected from 20 different habitats was simultaneously determined. Among three flavonoids determined, the content of quercetin-3-O-(2″-ß-D-xylosyl)-ß-D-galactoside was the highest with the average content in the tested samples of 161.0 µg·g~(-1). The content of compounds quercetin-3-O-hexosyl-hexoside and kaempferol-3-O-pentosyl-hexoside was relatively low, with the average content of 18.5 µg·g~(-1)(calculated as quercetin-3-O-sophoroside) and 49.4 µg·g~(-1)(calculated as kaempferol-3-O-sangbu diglycoside). There were significant differences in flavonoids content of samples from different production area. The content of flavonoids in spring P. notoginseng was significantly lower than that in winter P. notoginseng when the other influencing factors such as production areas, germplasm resources, and cultivation conditions were fixed. As for P. notoginseng of different specifications, the flavonoid content in the part connecting the taproot and the aboveground stem was significantly higher than that in other parts. The results of large-scale data showed that the flavonoid content gradually increased with the increase in the number of heads. There were significant differences between the flavonoid content in most specifications and grades, especially the 20-head P. notoginseng and countless head P. notoginseng, whose content was significantly lower and significantly higher than that of other specifications and grades, respectively. This study provides a scientific basis for the study of the effective components and quality control of P. notoginseng from the perspective of flavonoids.

RESUMO

Polyandrous mating can result in sexual conflict and/or promote the evolution of mating patterns. Does multiple mating by females support the genetic benefits hypothesis and can it be validated as an evolutionary strategy? If we are to decipher the consequences of sexual interactions and understand the interplay of sexual conflict and multiple generational benefits, the transgenerational effects need to be followed over multiple generations. We investigated the effects of three mating patterns, single mating, repeated mating, and multiple mating, on parental Spodoptera litura copulation behavior, and then identified the impact on the development, survival, and fecundity of the F1 and F2 generations. Fecundity was not significantly affected in the F1 generation but was substantially enhanced in the F2 generation. There was a reversal of offspring fitness across the F2 generations from the F1 generations in progeny produced by multiple mating. In addition, the intrinsic rate of increase, finite rate of increase and net reproductive rate in the F1 generation the multiple mating treatment was significantly lower than in the single mating treatment, but there was no apparent effect on the F2 generation. Repeated mating had no significant effects on progeny fitness. We postulate that multiple mating imposes cross-transgenerational effects and may ultimately influence multigenerational fitness in S. litura.

RESUMO

Spodoptera litura is an important pest that seriously affects Asparagus officinalis production. To clarify the population characteristics and feeding preference of S. litura on different asparagus tissues, asparagus stems and leaves were selected as the research objects, related studies were conducted by constructing the life table and the feeding preference experiment. The results showed that S. litura could complete its development and reproduction normally on asparagus stems or leaves. Although the adult longevity and fecundity of S. litura on the two types of tissues were not significantly different, the development duration of larvae and pupae, and total preoviposition period on leaves were significantly longer than those raised on stems. The intrinsic rate of increase and finite rate of increase were 0.186 d-1 and 1.204 d-1 on stems, which were significantly higher than those fed on leaves (0.161 d-1 and 1.175 d-1). The mean generation time on stems (32.88 d) was significantly lower than on leaves (36.88 d). It indicated that stems were more suitable for its population growth. In the feeding preference, the third and fifth instar larvae preferred to feed on leaves, and other instar larvae (except for the sixth instar of 2.5 h) had no significant difference. These results will provide a theoretical reference for further research and forecasting and integrated control.

RESUMO

Brown rice powder is underutilized mainly due to its lower starch digestibility and poor processing performance. The present study investigated the potential of steam explosion on the improvement of nutritional and physicochemical characteristic in brown rice powder and rheological property of paste. Compared with native brown rice powder, steam explosion at 0.5 MPa for 7 min increased the water-extractable arabinoxylans (5.77%), reducing sugar content (21.04%), and iodine blue value (30.38%), which indicated steam explosion that destroyed the intact cells of brown rice. Later the crystalline structure of brown rice powder was destroyed into an amorphous structure by steam explosion. Steam explosion enhanced the degree of gelatinization (4.76~351.85%) and solvent retention capacity (SRC) of brown rice powder, compared with native sample. The effect on the intact cells and starch structure of brown rice caused the starch digestibility enhancement remarkable. Viscoelastic profiles confirmed that steam explosion weakened the paste strength and elasticity corresponded with hardness and cohesiveness by increasing the loss factor (tanδ). This work provided important information for brown rice powder modified by steam explosion (0.5 MPa, 7 min) with good nutritional property (nutrients and digestibility) and processability (SRC, textural, and rheological property). Steam exploded brown rice powder (0.5 MPa, 7 min) could serve as a potential ingredient widely used in food products.

RESUMO

The monoester alkaloids in Aconitum carmichaelii, including benzoylaconitine (BAC), benzoylmesaconine, and benzoylhypaconitine, were found to have anti-hypertensive effects in spontaneously hypertension rats (SHRs), of which BAC is the strongest. However, its antihypertensive target and underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, first, we screened the antihypertensive targets of BAC by using the CVDPlatform (www.cbligand.org/CVD) and found that ACE/ACE2 are the most possible targets. Then, we verified the effect of BAC on ACE/ACE2 by virtual docking, SPR, enzyme activity assay, and HUVECs cell experiment. We found that BAC could bind with ACE/ACE2, inhibit ACE activity and protein expression, and activate ACE2 enzyme activity. Using vascular function test in vitro, we found that BAC could target ACE/ACE2 to enhance endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation. In BAC-treated SHRs, the levels of ACE and AngII in serum were reduced while Ang (1-7) was increased significantly, and the expression of ACE was reduced, which suggested that BAC can inhibit ACE and activate ACE2 to inhibit AngI to AngII and promote AngII to Ang (1-7) to inhibit vasoconstriction and finally attenuate hypertension. Furthermore, the signaling pathways with regard to vasorelaxation and vascular inflammation were investigated. The results showed that BAC could significantly activate Akt/eNOS, increase NO production, and promote endothelial-related vasodilation; BAC could also reduce inflammatory factors TNF-α and IL6, inhibition of COX-2 expression, and IKB-α phosphorylation to reduce vascular inflammation in SHRs. In brief, BAC targets ACE/ACE2 to enhance endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation and reduce vascular inflammation to attenuate hypertension as a potential modulator of the renin-angiotensin system.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE To s tudy the improvement effects of sinapic acid on Aβ42-induced injury of PC 12 cells and the mechanism. METHODS PC12 cells were divided into five groups :control group ,model group ,sinapic acid group ,phosphoinositide- 3-kinase(PI3K)inhibitor group and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK)inhibitor group. Each inhibitor group was added with LY 294002 and U 0126(10 μmol/L)for 1 h;except for control group ,other four groups were treated with 2 μmol/L Aβ42 for 24 h to replicate the Alzheimer ’s disease cell model ;except for control group and model group ,other three groups were added with 100 μmol/L sinapic acid respectively. After 24 hours of continuous culture ,survival rate of PC 12 cells was detected and the morphology of PC 12 cells was observed. The content of Aβ42,mRNA expression of cAMP response element binding protein (CREB),protein expression of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP),protein kinase A (PKA),CREB signaling pathway and phosphorylated CREB (p-CREB)were detected. RESULTS After treated with sinapic acid ,the survival rate of PC 12 cells,mRNA expression of CREB and protein expressions of cAMP ,PKA and p-CREB were increased significantly (P<0.05),while the content of Aβ42 was decreased significantly (P<0.05);cell morphology was significantly improved and synapses increased. After intervened with PI 3K and ERK inhibitors ,the survival rate of PC 12 cells, above mRNA and protein expressions were reversed significantly (P<0.05 or P<0.01);cell morphology was irregular ,the fragments increased ,and the synaptic connections decreased. CONCLUSIONS Sinapic acid can improve the survival rate of PC 12 cells injured by A β 42,improve cell (No.2021-KYYWF-0349) morphology and decrease the content of Aβ42,the mechanism of which may be associated with promoting the gene transcription of CREB , and activating cAMP/PKA/CREB signaling pathway.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To explore the efficacy of Yishen Huoxue Tongluo() decoction containing serum on the apoptosis of human disc nucleus pulposus cells under the overload static pressure stress and its related mechanism. METHODS: Human nucleus pulposus cells were divided into three groups. The blank group had no intervention. The model group and traditional Chinese medicine serum intervention group were treated with 3 MPa compressive stress in vitro for 2, 4 and 6 hours. The changes and differences of morphology, growth status and ultrastructure of intervertebral disc nucleus pulposus cells were observed. The apoptosis rate of nucleus pulposus cells and nuclear factor kappa-B p65 (NF-κB p65), SRY-related high mobility group box 9 (SOX9), C/EBP-homologous protein (CHOP), matrix metalloprotein-13 (MMP-13) and corresponding gene expression were detected. RESULTS: At the same time, compared with the blank group, the nucleus pulposus cells in the model group were smaller in volume, less in cytoplasm and worse in growth; the nucleus pulposus cells in the traditional Chinese medicine serum intervention group were slightly larger in volume, more complete in morphology, richer in cytoplasm and better in growth. Under the same action time, the ultrastructure of nucleus pulposus cells in blank group was complete, and the structures of primary and secondary processes were not broken;and the ultrastructure of model group and traditional Chinese medicine serum intervention group were damaged, the main and secondary processes were broken to varying degrees, and there was no significant difference between the two groups. At the same time, the apoptosis rate of nucleus pulposus cells in model group was higher than that in blank group, while the apoptosis rate of nucleus pulposus cells in the traditional Chinese medicine serum intervention group was lower than that inmodel group, the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05); with the increase of action time, there was no significant difference in the apoptosis rate of nucleus pulposus cells between blank group and traditional Chinese medicine serum intervention group, and the apoptosis rate of nucleus pulposus cells in model group was increased. Compared with model group, the expression of NF-κB p65, CHOP, MMP-13 were decreased and SOX9 was increased in traditional Chinese medicine serum intervention group at the same time (P<0.05);with the increase of action time, the expression of NF-κB p65, CHOP and MMP-13 were increased, and the expression of SOX9 was decreased in blank group and model group(P<0.05), and the expression level of model group was higher than that of blank group(P<0.05). Overall observation by gene expression, under the same action time, the relative quantifications of NF-κB p65, CHOP and MMP-13 in traditional Chinese medicine serum intervention group were lower than that in model group, while SOX9 was increased (P<0.05);compared with model group, the relative quantifications of NF-κB p65, CHOP and MMP-13 in blank group were decreased(P<0.05), and the relative quantification of SOX9 was increased(P<0.05);with the increase of action time, the relative quantifications of NF-κB p65, CHOP and MMP-13 of nucleus pulposus cells in blank group and model group were increased and SOX9 was decreased(P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Yishen Huoxue Tongluo() decoction can reduce the apoptosis of nucleus pulposus cells under overload and static pressure, and has the effect of delaying the degeneration of nucleus pulposus cells. Its mechanism may be related to the decrease of CHOP, MMP-13 expression and the increase of SOX9 expression by inhibiting NF-κB p65 signal pathway of nucleus pulposus cells.

RESUMO

Depression is associated with poorer outcomes in a wide spectrum of surgeries but the specific effects of depression in patients undergoing cervical spine surgery are unknown. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and impact of pre-surgical clinical depression on pain and other outcomes after surgery for cervical degenerative disc disease using a national representative database. Data of patients with cervical myelopathy and radiculopathy were extracted from the 2005-2014 US Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) database. Included patients underwent anterior discectomy and fusion (ACDF). Acute or chronic post-surgical pain, postoperative complications, unfavorable discharge, length of stay (LOS) and hospital costs were evaluated. Totally 215,684 patients were included. Pre-surgical depression was found in 29,889 (13.86%) patients, with a prevalence nearly doubled during 2005-2014 in the US. Depression was independently associated with acute or chronic post-surgical pain (aOR: 1.432), unfavorable discharge (aOR: 1.311), prolonged LOS (aOR: 1.152), any complication (aOR: 1.232), respiratory complications/pneumonia (aOR: 1.153), dysphagia (aOR: 1.105), bleeding (aOR: 1.085), infection/sepsis (aOR: 1.529), and higher hospital costs (beta: 1080.640) compared to non-depression. No significant risk of delirium or venous thrombotic events was observed in patients with depression as compared to non-depression. Among patients receiving primary surgery, depression was independently associated with prolonged LOS (aOR: 1.150), any complication (aOR:1.233) and postoperative pain (aOR:1.927). In revision surgery, no significant associations were found for prolonged LOS, any complication or pain. In conclusion, in the US patients undergoing ACDF, pre-surgical clinical depression predicts post-surgical acute or chronic pain, a slightly prolonged LOS and the presence of any complication. Awareness of these associations may help clinicians stratify risk preoperatively and optimize patient care.

RESUMO

Host plant preference during the larval stage may help shape not only phenotypic plasticity but also behavioral isolation. We assessed the effects of diet on population parameters and mate choice in Spodoptera litura. We raised larvae fed on tobacco, Chinese cabbage, or an artificial diet, and we observed the shortest developmental time and highest fecundity in individuals fed the artificial diet. However, survival rates were higher for larvae on either of the natural diets. Population parameters including intrinsic rate of increase and finite rate of increase were significantly higher with the artificial diet, but this diet led to a lower mean generation time. Copulation duration, copulation time, and number of eggs reared significantly differed between diets. In terms of mate choice, females on the artificial diet rarely mated with males fed on a natural host. Our results support the hypothesis that different diets may promote behavioral isolation, affecting mating outcomes. Thus, findings for populations fed an artificial diet may not reflect findings for populations in the field.

RESUMO

Objective:To analyze the effects of prescription reviews of key monitored drugs using the drug regulatory platform in a district of Shanghai, and the influencing factors for the rate of unqualified prescriptions. Methods:A drug regulatory platform in a district in Shanghai began to implement prescription reviews since June 2018, extracting the reviewed prescriptions of all key monitored drugs and related information from June to December. Taking the unqualified rate of prescription in June as the baseline data, the χ2 test and the logistics regression model were used for data analysis. Results:From June to December 2018, clinical pharmacists reviewed 19 084 outpatient and emergency prescriptions and 10 607 inpatient prescriptions. The unqualified rates of outpatient and emergency prescriptions and inpatient prescriptions dropped from 16.52% and 23.28% in June to 4.45% and 13.80% in December, respectively. Logistics regression analysis showed that the rate of unqualified reviews of outpatient and emergency prescriptions was lower than that of inpatient prescriptions, and the rate of unqualified prescriptions in hospital was significantly lower than that in community health service centers; the rate of unqualified prescriptions for auxiliary drugs and nutritional drugs was significantly lower than that of antibacterial drugs. Conclusions:The prescription reviews of key monitored drugs can effectively promote the rational use of drugs. In the future, it is recommended to strengthen technical support for community health service centers and professional training for clinicians and pharmacists.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Comorbidities in patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) may compromise outcomes with increased hospital stays, re-admission, and mortality rates. We aimed to determine whether chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects post-operative outcomes of patients undergoing total joint arthroplasty (TJA). METHODS: To identify studies for this review and meta-analysis, two independent reviewers searched PubMed, Cochrane, EMBASE, and Google Scholar until April 1, 2019, and identified additional studies by manual search of reference lists. Prospective or retrospective studies with quantitative outcomes for patients undergoing TJA were selected. Outcomes were compared between patients with underlying CKD stage ≥ 3 or eGFR < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 versus mild/non-CKD as controls. Main endpoints were mortality, re-operation, and re-admission rates. RESULTS: Among 59 studies reviewed, 19 meeting the eligibility criteria were included, providing data of 2,141,393 patients. After THA or TKA, CKD was associated with higher mortality risk than non-CKD (pooled OR 2.20, 95%CI = 1.90 to 2.54; P < 0.001); no significant differences were seen in re-operation between CKD and non-CKD patients (pooled OR 1.26, 95%CI = 0.84 to 1.88; P = 0.266); and CKD patients had higher any-cause re-admission rates (pooled OR = 1.57, 95%CI = 1.27 to 1.94, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Underlying CKD predicts adverse outcomes after elective TJA with increased risk of mortality, re-admission, surgical site infection, and perioperative transfusion. Findings of this review and meta-analysis highlight CKD as a critical contributor to complications after TJA and may be helpful to surgeons when advising patients about associated risks of TJA.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE:To investigate the mechanism of sinapic acid (SA)against PC 12 cell injury induced by Amyloid β1-42 protein(Aβ1-42)based on PI 3K/Akt/GSK3β signaling pathway. METHODS:PC12 cells of rats were randomly divided into control group,Aβ group(Aβ1-42 2 μmol/L),Aβ+SA group(Aβ1-42 2 μmol/L+SA100 μmol/L),Aβ+SA+LY group [Aβ1-42 2 μmol/L+SA 100 μmol/L+LY294002(PI3K inhibitor )10 μmol/L],Aβ+LY group(Aβ1-42 2 μmol/L+LY294002 10 μmol/L)and LY group (LY294002 10 μmol/L). Except for control group and LY group ,the cells of other groups were replicated the damage model with Aβ1-42. After 24 hours of culture ,the morphology of cells was obsened in each group with a microscope ,and MTT assay was adopted to determine the cell viability of PC 12 cells in each group. Western blotting assay was used to detect the expression of PI 3K,p-PI3K, Akt,p-Akt,GSK3β and p-GSK3β in cells of each group. RESULTS:Compared with control group ,the number of cells decreased and some synaptic breaks disappeared in Aβ group while cell viability, ratio of p-PI 3K/PI3K,p-Akt/Akt and p-GSK 3β/GSK3β in Aβ group were decreased significantly(P<0.05 or P<0.01). Compared with Aβ group, the cells became round and synapses became more in Aβ+SA group while cell viability, the ratio of p-PI 3K/PI3K,p-Akt/Akt and p-GSK 3β/GSK3β were increased significantly(P<0.05). Compared with Aβ+SA group, some synaptic breaks occurred in Aβ+SA+LY group while cell viability, the ratio of p-PI 3K/PI3K,p-Akt/Akt and p-GSK 3β/GSK3β were decreased significantly(P<0.05);Aβ+LY group had more cell debris, and t he cell viability was decreased ,but the difference was not significant ,and the ratio of p-PI 3K/PI3K,p-Akt/Akt and p-GSK3 β/GSK3 β had no significant change (P>0.05); LY294002 alone had no significant effect on morphology ,cellviability and the ratio of p-PI 3K/PI3K,p-Akt/Akt or p-GSK 3β/ GSK3 β (P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS : SA may play aprotective role against PC 12 cell injury induced by A β 1-42 through activating PI 3K/Akt/GSK-3β.

RESUMO

Soil microbial community dynamics during the spring freezing-thawing period could affect carbon and nutrient cycling in the subsequent growing season. During spring soil freezing-thawing period, we monitored temporal dynamics of soil microbial community in different soil substrates for Larix gmelinii forest using phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) as biomarkers every 3-7 days. The results were as followed: 1) the total PLFAs content, the PLFAs content and relative abundance of each soil microbial group, the ratio of Gram-positive bacteria to Gram-negative bacteria (G+/G-), the ratio of saturated PLFAs to unsaturated PLFAs (S/NS) and the ratio of bacteria to total fungi (fungi + arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi) (B/F) all varied among sampling times; 2) soil total organic carbon (TOC) and nitrogen (TN) were the main factors affecting soil microbial community in the early stage of soil freezing-thawing period; soil moisture, TOC and TN were the main driving factors in the middle stage of soil freezing-thawing period; soil microbes were affected by soil tempera-ture, moisture, TOC, TN and C/N in the late stage of soil freezing-thawing period; 3) the total PLFAs content, the PLFAs content and relative abundance of each soil microbial group (except the relative abundance of bacteria), B/F, G+/G- and S/NS all showed significant difference between soil substrates, and soil TOC, TN and C/N were the key determination factors. Soil temperature, moisture, and nutrient availability were the main factors affecting soil microbial community during the spring soil freezing-thawing period, but the degree of influence varied with the freezing-thawing stages and microbial groups.

RESUMO

Objective@#To compare the efficacy and safety of surgical resection and thermal ablations in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma in China using a network Meta-analysis.@*Methods@#References related to eligible randomized controlled studies (RCTs) were searched from China Biology Medicine, China National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI), PubMed, Embase and Cochrane Library from 1st January 2010 to 1st December 2017, and were selected according to the criteria. The 1-year, 3-year, and 5-year survival rates and incidence of serious complications were compared among surgical resection (SR), radiofrequency ablation (RFA), and microwave ablation(MWA) by network Meta-analysis based frequency and Bayesian methods.@*Results@#A total of 24 RCTs were included in this study. The results of surface under the cumulative ranking probabilities (SUCRA) showed that when all RCTs were included, the frequency model supported MWA had the highest 5-year overall survival rate (66.1%), while the Bayesian model supported SR had the highest 5-year overall survival rate (64.7%). When the tumor diameter of hepatocellular carcinoma was less than 5 cm and the liver function was Child-Pugh A/B, the frequency and Bayesian model both supported SR had the highest 5-year overall survival rate (89.1% and 88.3%, respectively). When all RCTs or RCTs were included with the tumor diameter less than 5 cm and liver function was Child-Pugh A/B, both the frequency and the Bayesian model supported RFA had the best safety (serious complications rate) (16.4%, 18.7%, 12.6 and 12.8%, respectively).@*Conclusion@#SR should be the first choice for early and small hepatocellular carcinoma, while RFA and MWA have their own indications.

RESUMO

A pheromone-mediated mating disruption is a vital tool in the management of insect population dynamics that not only prevents mating but also delays mating in the target insect. Here, we examined the effect of delayed mating on the longevity and reproductive performance of the global pest, Spodoptera litura Fabricius (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). Delayed mating was imposed on both sexes simultaneously, males only, and females only. The results showed that a 30-40% reduction in the successful mating rate of S. litura was caused by 7-d delay in mating. Increased mating ages of both sexes of S. litura resulted in a significant decrease in 3-d-old delayed mating, followed by an increase in mean duration of copulation. Furthermore, delayed mating had a significantly negative influence on the number of S. litura eggs produced. Mating delay imposed on both sexes simultaneously had a significantly greater effect on longevity and the number of eggs than when it was applied to either sex alone, and females were more severely affected by delayed mating than males in terms of longevity. Percentage of mating, fecundity, and female longevity were all significantly correlated with the number of days delayed mating. However, the hatching rate of eggs was not significantly affected by an increased delay in mating. Overall, our results indicated that delayed mating in both females and males drastically reduced the females' reproductive output, which itself was affected more by increasing the age at mating of females than males.
