OBJECTIVE: To study factors associated with hospitalization in an unselected population of patients aged 65 years or older treated for syncope in Spanish hospital emergency departments (EDs). To determine the prevalence of adverse events at 30 days in patients discharged home and the factors associated with such events. METHODS: We included all patients aged 65 years or older who were diagnosed with syncope during a single week in 52 Spanish EDs, recording patient clinical and ED case management data. We compared the findings between hospitalized patients and those discharged home, following the latter for 30 days. In discharged patients, we explored predictors of a composite adverse-event outcome (occurrence of any of the following: ED revisits, hospitalization related to the index visit, or any-cause death). RESULTS: A total of 477 patients with syncope were identified; 67 (14%) were admitted, and 5 (7.5%) died. The median (interquartile range) length of hospital stay was 6 days (3-11 days). Comorbidity increased the probability of hospitalization (odds ratio, 2.172; 95% CI, 1.013-4.655). Among the 410 patients (86%) discharged home from the ED, 9.2% experienced an adverse event within 30 days (ED revisits, 8.,1%; hospitalization, 2.2%; death, 1.5%). No factors were associated with the 30-day composite outcome. CONCLUSIONS: The majority of patients aged 65 years or older are discharged home from EDs, and 30-day adverse events, while infrequent, are difficult to predict. Hospitalization was related to comorbidity and an absence of cognitive decline.


OBJETIVO: Investigar en una muestra no seleccionada de población mayor (65 o más años) atendida en servicios de urgencias hospitalarios (SUH) españoles por síncope los factores que se asociaron con la hospitalización, prevalencia de eventos adversos (EA) a 30 días y los factores asociados a estos entre los pacientes dados de alta desde urgencias. METODO: Se incluyeron todos pacientes con 65 o más años diagnosticados de síncope durante una semana en 52 SUH españoles. Se recogieron datos de la situación clínica y el manejo en urgencias, que se compararon entre los pacientes hospitalizados y los dados de alta directamente desde urgencias. Estos últimos fueron seguidos durante 30 días y se identificaron aquellos que presentaron un EA combinado (reconsulta en urgencias u hospitalización relacionada con el evento índice y muerte por cualquier causa), y se investigaron los factores que predecían dicho EA combinado. RESULTADOS: Se identificaron 477 pacientes con síncope. Hospitalizaron 67 (14%), de los que fallecieron 5 (7,5%) y la estancia mediana fue de 6 días (RIC 3-11). La comorbilidad incrementó la probabilidad de ingreso (OR: 2,172, IC 95%: 1,013-4,655). Entre los 410 pacientes dados de alta de urgencias (86%), el 9,2% tuvo un EA durante los 30 días siguientes (reconsulta a urgencias: 8,1%; hospitalización: 2,2%; muerte: 1,5%). Ningún factor se asoció con el riesgo de EA combinado a 30 días. CONCLUSIONES: La mayoría de los pacientes con 65 años o más atendidos en los SUH por síncope son dados de alta directamente desde urgencias, y los EA a los 30 días fueron poco frecuentes, pero difíciles de predecir. La hospitalización se relacionó con presencia de comorbilidad y ausencia de deterioro cognitivo.

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are the final stage of the anthropogenic water cycle where a wide range of chemical and biological markers of human activity can be found. In COVID-19 disease contexts, wastewater surveillance has been used to infer community trends based on viral abundance and SARS-CoV-2 RNA variant composition, which has served to anticipate and establish appropriate protocols to prevent potential viral outbreaks. Numerous studies worldwide have provided reliable and robust tools to detect and quantify SARS-CoV-2 RNA in wastewater, although due to the high dilution and degradation rate of the viral RNA in such samples, the detection limit of the pathogen has been a bottleneck for the proposed protocols so far. The current work provides a comprehensive and systematic study of the different parameters that may affect the detection of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in wastewater and hinder its quantification. The results obtained using synthetic viral RNA as a template allow us to consider that 10 genome copies per µL is the minimum RNA concentration that provides reliable and consistent values for the quantification of SARS-CoV-2 RNA. RT-qPCR analysis of wastewater samples collected at the WWTP in Salamanca (western Spain) and at six pumping stations in the city showed that below this threshold, positive results must be confirmed by sequencing to identify the specific viral sequence. This allowed us to find correlations between the SARS-CoV-2 RNA levels found in wastewater and the COVID-19 clinical data reported by health authorities. The close match between environmental and clinical data from the Salamanca case study has been confirmed by similar experimental approaches in four other cities in the same region. The present methodological approach reinforces the usefulness of wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) studies in the face of future pandemic outbreaks.

Normalization of gene expression count data is an essential step of in the analysis of RNA-sequencing data. Its statistical analysis has been mostly addressed in the context of differential expression analysis, that is in the univariate setting. However, relationships among genes and samples are better explored and quantified using multivariate exploratory data analysis tools like Principal Component Analysis (PCA). In this study we investigate how normalization impacts the PCA model and its interpretation, considering twelve different widely used normalization methods that were applied on simulated and experimental data. Correlation patterns in the normalized data were explored using both summary statistics and Covariance Simultaneous Component Analysis. The impact of normalization on the PCA solution was assessed by exploring the model complexity, the quality of sample clustering in the low-dimensional PCA space and gene ranking in the model fit to normalized data. PCA models upon normalization were interpreted in the context gene enrichment pathway analysis. We found that although PCA score plots are often similar independently form the normalization used, biological interpretation of the models can depend heavily on the normalization method applied.

OBJECTIVE: Analyse the association between the use of diagnostic tests and the characteristics of older patients 65 years of age or more who consult the emergency department (ED). METHODS: We performed an analysis of the EDEN cohort that includes patients who consulted 52 Spanish EDs. The association of age, sex, and ageing characteristics with the use of diagnostic tests (blood tests, electrocardiogram (ECG), microbiological cultures, X-ray, computed tomography, ultrasound, invasive techniques) was studied. The association was analysed by calculating the adjusted odds ratios (aOR) and their 95 % confidence intervals (CI) using a logistic regression model. RESULTS: A total of 25,557 patients were analysed. There was an increase in the use of diagnostic tests based on age, with an aOR for blood test of 1.805 (95 %CI 1.671 - 1.950), ECG 1.793 (95 %CI 1.664 - 1.932) and X-ray 1.707 (95 %CI 1.583 - 1.840) in the group of 85 years or more. The use of diagnostic tests is lower in the female population. Most ageing characteristics (cognitive impairment, previous falls, polypharmacy, dependence, and comorbidity) were independently associated with increased use of diagnostic tests. CONCLUSIONS: Age, and the characteristics of ageing itself are generally associated with a greater use of diagnostic tests in the ED.

We developed a novel eight-way tomato multiparental advanced generation intercross (MAGIC) population to improve the accessibility of tomato relatives genetic resources to geneticists and breeders. The interspecific tomato MAGIC population (ToMAGIC) was obtained by intercrossing four accessions each of Solanum lycopersicum var. cerasiforme and Solanum pimpinellifolium, which are the weedy relative and the ancestor of cultivated tomato, respectively. The eight exotic ToMAGIC founders were selected based on a representation of the genetic diversity and geographical distribution of the two taxa. The resulting MAGIC population comprises 354 lines, which were genotyped using a new 12k tomato single primer enrichment technology panel and yielded 6488 high-quality single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNPs). The genotyping data revealed a high degree of homozygosity, an absence of genetic structure, and a balanced representation of the founder genomes. To evaluate the potential of the ToMAGIC population, a proof of concept was conducted by phenotyping it for fruit size, plant pigmentation, leaf morphology, and earliness. Genome-wide association studies identified strong associations for the studied traits, pinpointing both previously identified and novel candidate genes near or within the linkage disequilibrium blocks. Domesticated alleles for fruit size were recessive and were found, at low frequencies, in wild/ancestral populations. Our findings demonstrate that the newly developed ToMAGIC population is a valuable resource for genetic research in tomato, offering significant potential for identifying new genes that govern key traits in tomato. ToMAGIC lines displaying a pyramiding of traits of interest could have direct applicability for integration into breeding pipelines providing untapped variation for tomato breeding.

The prevalence of multidrug-resistant Gram-negative infections, particularly carbapenem-resistant strains, has become a significant global health concern. Ceftazidime-avibactam (CZA) has emerged as a promising treatment option. However, data on its efficacy and safety in children are scarce, necessitating further investigation. We conducted a descriptive case series at a tertiary hospital in Spain from February 2019 to January 2022. Pediatric patients (<16 years) treated with CZA for confirmed or suspected multidrug-resistant Gram-negative infections were included. The clinical and microbiological characteristics, treatment approaches, and outcomes were examined. Eighteen children received CZA treatment. All had complex chronic conditions, with the most frequent underlying main diseases being liver transplantation (n = 8) and biliary atresia (n = 4). The predominant type of infection for which they received CZA was intra-abdominal infection caused or suspected to be caused by OXA-48-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae. CZA was generally well tolerated. Within the first month of starting CZA therapy, two patients died, with one case directly linked to the infection's fatal outcome. Some patients needed repeated courses of therapy due to recurrent infections, yet no resistance development was noted. In summary, the use of CZA showed effectiveness and safety, while the lack of resistance development highlights CZA's potential as a primary treatment option against OXA-48-producing infections.

The elderly population frequently consults the emergency department (ED). This population could have greater use of EDs and hospital health resources. The EDEN cohort of patients aged 65 years or older visiting the ED allowed this association to be investigated. To analyse the association between healthcare resource use and the characteristics of patients over 65 years of age who consult hospital EDs. We performed an analysis of the EDEN cohort, a retrospective, analytical, and multipurpose registry that includes patients over 65 years of age who consulted in 52 Spanish EDs. The impact of age, sex, and characteristics of ageing on the following outcomes was studied: need for hospital admission (primary outcome) and need for observation, stay in the ED > 12 h, prolonged hospital stay > 7 days, need for intensive care unit (ICU) and return to the ED at 30 days related to the index visit (secondary outcomes). The association was analysed by calculating the adjusted odds ratios (aOR) and their 95% confidence intervals (CI), using a logistic regression model. A total of 25,557 patients with a mean age of 78.3 years were analysed, 45% were males. Of note was the presence of comorbidity, a Charlson index ≥ 3 (33%), and polypharmacy (66%). Observation in the ED was required by 26%, 25.4% were admitted to the hospital, and 0.9% were admitted to the ICU. The ED stay was > 12 h in 12.5% and hospital stay > 7 days in 13.5% of cases. There was a progressive increase in healthcare resource use based on age, with an aOR for the need for observation of 2.189 (95% CI 2.038-2.352), ED stay > 12 h 2.136 (95% CI 1.942-2.349) and hospital admission 2.579 (95% CI 2.399-2.772) in the group ≥ 85 years old. Most of the characteristics inherent to ageing (cognitive impairment, falls in the previous 6 months, polypharmacy, functional dependence, and comorbidity) were associated with significant increases in the use of healthcare resources, except for ICU admission, which was less in all the variables studied. Age and the characteristics inherent to ageing are associated with greater use of structural healthcare resources.

Botrytis cinerea is the phytopathogenic fungus responsible for the gray mold disease that affects crops worldwide. Essential oils (EOs) have emerged as a sustainable tool to reduce the adverse impact of synthetic fungicides. Nevertheless, the scarce information about the physiological mechanism action and the limitations to applying EOs has restricted its use. This study focused on elucidating the physiological action mechanisms and prospection of lipid nanoparticles to apply EO of Mentha piperita. The results showed that the EO of M. piperita at 500, 700, and 900 µL L-1 inhibited the mycelial growth at 100 %. The inhibition of spore germination of B. cinerea reached 31.43 % at 900 µL L-1. The EO of M. piperita decreased the dry weight and increased pH, electrical conductivity, and cellular material absorbing OD260 nm of cultures of B. cinerea. The fluorescence technique revealed that EO reduced hyphae width, mitochondrial activity, and viability, and increased ROS production. The formulation of EO of M. piperita loaded- solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN) at 500, 700, and 900 µL L-1 had particle size ∼ 200 nm, polydispersity index < 0.2, and stability. Also, the thermogravimetric analysis indicated that the EO of M. piperita-loaded SLN has great thermal stability at 50 °C. EO of M. piperita-loaded SLN reduced the mycelial growth of B. cinerea by 70 %, while SLN formulation (without EO) reached 42 % inhibition. These results supported that EO of M. piperita-loaded SLN is a sustainable tool for reducing the disease produced by B. cinerea.

Botrytis cinerea and Penicillium expansum are phytopathogenic fungi that produce the deterioration of fruits. Thus, essential oil (EO) has emerged as a sustainable strategy to minimize the use of synthetic fungicides, but their volatility and scarce solubility restrict their application. This study proposes the EO of Oreganum vulgare and Thymus vulgaris-loaded solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN) based chitosan/PVA hydrogels to reduce the infestation of fungi phytopathogen. EO of O. vulgare and T. vulgaris-loaded SLN had a good homogeneity (0.21-0.35) and stability (-28.8 to -33.0 mV) with a mean size of 180.4-188.4 nm. The optimization of EO-loaded SLN showed that the encapsulation of 800 and 1200 µL L-1 of EO of O vulgare and T. vulgaris had the best particle size. EO-loaded SLN significantly reduced the mycelial growth and spore germination of both fungi pathogen. EO-loaded SLN into hydrogels showed appropriate physicochemical characteristics to apply under environmental conditions. Furthermore, rheological analyses evidenced that hydrogels had solid-like characteristics and elastic behavior. EO-loaded SLN-based hydrogels inhibited the spore germination in B. cinerea (80.9 %) and P. expansum (55.7 %). These results show that SLN and hydrogels are eco-friendly strategies for applying EO with antifungal activity.

Microbial cell factories allow the production of chemicals presenting an alternative to traditional fossil fuel-dependent production. However, finding the optimal expression of production pathway genes is crucial for the development of efficient production strains. Unlike sequential experimentation, combinatorial optimization captures the relationships between pathway genes and production, albeit at the cost of conducting multiple experiments. Fractional factorial designs followed by linear modeling and statistical analysis reduce the experimental workload while maximizing the information gained during experimentation. Although tools to perform and analyze these designs are available, guidelines for selecting appropriate factorial designs for pathway optimization are missing. In this study, we leverage a kinetic model of a seven-genes pathway to simulate the performance of a full factorial strain library. We compare this approach to resolution V, IV, III, and Plackett Burman (PB) designs. Additionally, we evaluate the performance of these designs as training sets for a random forest algorithm aimed at identifying best-producing strains. Evaluating the robustness of these designs to noise and missing data, traits inherent to biological datasets, we find that while resolution V designs capture most information present in full factorial data, they necessitate the construction of a large number of strains. On the other hand, resolution III and PB designs fall short in identifying optimal strains and miss relevant information. Besides, given the small number of experiments required for the optimization of a pathway with seven genes, linear models outperform random forest. Consequently, we propose the use of resolution IV designs followed by linear modeling in Design-Build-Test-Learn (DBTL) cycles targeting the screening of multiple factors. These designs enable the identification of optimal strains and provide valuable guidance for subsequent optimization cycles.

BACKGROUND: Eyelashes play a crucial role in self-image and ocular protection. Enhancements to their structure are of both cosmetic and clinical interest. AIMS: To assess the efficacy of a peptide and glycosaminoglycan-based eyelash enhancer serum in improving eyelash structure. PATIENTS/METHODS: This open-label clinical trial involved 30 females aged 25-65. Eyelashes were assessed at baseline (D0), 4 weeks (D28), and 12 weeks (D84) using specialized software and high-resolution imagery. Measurements included lash number, width, length, volume, arc, and angle. RESULTS: At 12 weeks, significant increases were observed in lash length (+8.3%), number (+5%), width (+10.1%), volume (+14.1%), arc (+13.4%), and angle (+28.3%) compared to baseline. Global Eyelash Assessment (GEA) scores significantly improved, and patient treatment satisfaction increased from 73.34% at D28 to 84.33% at D84. No adverse effects were reported. CONCLUSIONS: The eyelash growth enhancer serum demonstrated significant efficacy in improving eyelash structure by Week 12, with early signs of improvement evident by Week 4. The high patient satisfaction levels underscore the perceived effectiveness of the product.

To investigate whether the timing of a previous hospital admission for acute heart failure (AHF) is a prognostic factor for AHF patients revisiting the emergency department (ED) in the subsequent 12-month follow-up. All ED AHF patients enrolled in the previously described EAHFE registry were stratified by the presence or absence of an AHF hospitalization admission in the prior 12 months. The primary outcome was 12-month all-cause mortality post ED visit. Secondary end points were hospital admission, prolonged hospitalization (> 7 days), mortality during hospitalization and a 90-day post-discharge adverse composite event (ACE) rate, defined as ED revisits due to AHF, hospitalizations due to AHF, or all-cause mortality. Outcomes were adjusted for baseline and AHF episode characteristics.Of 5,757 patients included, the median age was 84 years (IQR 77-88); 57% were women, and 3,759 (65.3%) had an AHF hospitalization in the previous 12 months. The 12-month mortality was 37% (41.7% vs. 28.3% p < 0.001), hospital admission was 76.1% (78.8% vs. 71.1% p < 0.001) ACE was 60.2% (65.1% vs. 50.5% p < 0.001). In the adjusted analysis, patients with AHF hospitalization in the prior 12 months had a higher mortality (HR = 1.41; 95% CI 1.27-1.56), 90-day ACE rate (HR = 1.45: 95% CI 1.32-1.59), and more hospital admissions (OR = 1.32; 95% CI 1.16-1.51), with shorter times since the previous hospitalization being related to the outcomes analyzed. One-year mortality, adverse events at 90 days, and readmission rates are increased in ED AHF patients previously admitted within the last 12 months.

Industrial biotechnology uses Design-Build-Test-Learn (DBTL) cycles to accelerate the development of microbial cell factories, required for the transition to a biobased economy. To use them effectively, appropriate connections between the phases of the cycle are crucial. Using p-coumaric acid (pCA) production in Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a case study, we propose the use of one-pot library generation, random screening, targeted sequencing, and machine learning (ML) as links during DBTL cycles. We showed that the robustness and flexibility of the ML models strongly enable pathway optimization and propose feature importance and Shapley additive explanation values as a guide to expand the design space of original libraries. This approach allowed a 68% increased production of pCA within two DBTL cycles, leading to a 0.52 g/L titer and a 0.03 g/g yield on glucose.

Microbial cell factories are instrumental in transitioning towards a sustainable bio-based economy, offering alternatives to conventional chemical processes. However, fulfilling their potential requires simultaneous screening for optimal media composition, process and genetic factors, acknowledging the complex interplay between the organism's genotype and its environment. This study employs statistical design of experiments to systematically explore these relationships and optimize the production of p-coumaric acid (pCA) in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Two rounds of fractional factorial designs were used to identify factors with a significant effect on pCA production, which resulted in a 168-fold variation in pCA titre. Moreover, a significant interaction between the culture temperature and expression of ARO4 highlighted the importance of simultaneous process and strain optimization. The presented approach leverages the strengths of experimental design and statistical analysis and could be systematically applied during strain and bioprocess design efforts to unlock the full potential of microbial cell factories.

Biofilm formation by the pathobiont Haemophilus influenzae is associated with human nasopharynx colonization, otitis media in children, and chronic respiratory infections in adults suffering from chronic respiratory diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). ß-lactam and quinolone antibiotics are commonly used to treat these infections. However, considering the resistance of biofilm-resident bacteria to antibiotic-mediated killing, the use of antibiotics may be insufficient and require being replaced or complemented with novel strategies. Moreover, unlike the standard minimal inhibitory concentration assay used to assess antibacterial activity against planktonic cells, standardization of methods to evaluate anti-biofilm drug activity is limited. In this work, we detail a panel of protocols for systematic analysis of drug antimicrobial effect on bacterial biofilms, customized to evaluate drug effects against H. influenzae biofilms. Testing of two cinnamaldehyde analogs, (E)-trans-2-nonenal and (E)-3-decen-2-one, demonstrated their effectiveness in both H. influenzae inhibition of biofilm formation and eradication or preformed biofilms. Assay complementarity allowed quantifying the dynamics and extent of the inhibitory effects, also observed for ampicillin resistant clinical strains forming biofilms refractory to this antibiotic. Moreover, cinnamaldehyde analog encapsulation into poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) polymeric nanoparticles allowed drug vehiculization while maintaining efficacy. Overall, we demonstrate the usefulness of cinnamaldehyde analogs against H. influenzae biofilms, present a test panel that can be easily adapted to a wide range of pathogens and drugs, and highlight the benefits of drug nanoencapsulation towards safe controlled release.

Chlorpyrifos (CP) is a globally used pesticide with acute toxicity. This work studied the photocatalytic degradation of CP using TiO2, ZnO nanoparticles, and nanocomposites of TiO2 and ZnO supported on SPIONs (SPION@SiO2@TiO2 and SPION@SiO2@ZnO). The nanocomposites were synthesized by multi-step incipient wetness impregnation. The effects of the initial pH, catalyst type, and dose were evaluated. The nanocomposites of SPION@SiO2@TiO2 and SPION@SiO2@ZnO showed higher CP photodegradation levels than free nanoparticles, reaching 95.6% and 82.3%, respectively, at pH 7. The findings indicate that iron oxide, as a support material for TiO2 and ZnO, extended absorption edges and delayed the electron-hole recombination of the nanocomposites, improving their photocatalytic efficiency. At the same time, these nanocomposites, especially SPION@SiO2@TiO2, showed efficient degradation of 3,5,6-trichloropyridinol (TCP), one of the final metabolites of CP. The stability and reuse of this nanocomposite were also evaluated, with 74.6% efficiency found after six cycles. Therefore, this nanomaterial represents an eco-friendly, reusable, and effective alternative for the degradation of chlorpyrifos in wastewater treatment.

The tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is an important crop worldwide and is considered a model plant to study stress responses. Small RNAs (sRNAs), 21-24 nucleotides in length, are recognized as a conserved mechanism for regulating gene expression in eukaryotes. Plant endogenous sRNAs, such as microRNA (miRNA), have been involved in disease resistance. High-throughput RNA sequencing was used to analyze the miRNA profile of the aerial part of 30-day-old tomato plants after the application of the fungus Trichoderma atroviride to the seeds at the transcriptional memory state. Compared to control plants, ten differentially expressed (DE) miRNAs were identified in those inoculated with Trichoderma, five upregulated and five downregulated, of which seven were known (miR166a, miR398-3p, miR408, miR5300, miR6024, miR6027-5p, and miR9471b-3p), and three were putatively novel (novel miR257, novel miR275, and novel miR1767). miRNA expression levels were assessed using real-time quantitative PCR analysis. A plant sRNA target analysis of the DE miRNAs predicted 945 potential target genes, most of them being downregulated (84%). The analysis of KEGG metabolic pathways showed that most of the targets harbored functions associated with plant-pathogen interaction, membrane trafficking, and protein kinases. Expression changes of tomato miRNAs caused by Trichoderma are linked to plant defense responses and appear to have long-lasting effects.

RESUMO

The global threat posed by antimicrobial resistance demands urgent action and the development of effective drugs. Lower respiratory tract infections remain the deadliest communicable disease worldwide, often challenging to treat due to the presence of bacteria that form recalcitrant biofilms. There is consensus that novel anti-infectives with reduced resistance compared with conventional antibiotics are needed, leading to extensive research on innovative antibacterial agents. This review explores the recent progress in lipid-based nanomedicines developed to counteract bacterial respiratory infections, especially those involving biofilm growth; focuses on improved drug bioavailability and targeting and highlights novel strategies to enhance treatment efficacy while emphasizing the importance of continued research in this dynamic field.

Hypodermosis in Cervus elaphus was studied in the Riaño Regional Hunting Reserve, Province of León, north-western Spain. One hundred and ten red deer were examined for the presence of warble fly larvae. They were analyzed by PCR analysis of the COI region of mt-DNA and identified as Hypoderma actaeon. The prevalence of larvae was 42.7% with a mean intensity of 12.5 ± 18 (range 1-80) warbles/deer infested. The distribution of larvae in the infested animals showed an aggregated/overdispersed pattern (aggregation index = 25.84), where the larvae are not randomly or uniformly distributed, but strongly aggregated among their hosts. Larvae were found in all three states. First and second-instars were observed mainly in the autumn until the end of winter (November-March) and third-instars in late winter until mid-spring (March-May). The adult animals and the males had a higher prevalence than the young and the females, finding statistically significant differences only according to the sex of the animals. Seasonal variations were observed in the prevalence with the highest number of infested animals in winter and autumn, but not in terms of the mean intensity of parasites. Additionally, we assessed the presence of anti-Hypoderma antibodies in serum by means of indirect ELISA tests, using a crude larval extract (CLE) and a purified fraction the hypodermin C (HyC) obtained from first instars of Spanish isolates of Hypoderma lineatum (cattle). These findings confirm that H. actaeon is widely distributed in northern Spain, and provide new information about its chronobiology in mountainous Atlantic ecosystems from southwestern Europe.
