Verbal selection test and work performance validity based on two samples of psychiatric aides were both .25, with corrected validities of .60 (n = 40) and .46 (n = 60). When combined with three previous samples (N = 273), meta-analysis yielded a mean validity of .25 (cumulative p = .00003) which provided further evidence of the validity of cognitive ability tests in selection of psychiatric aides.

The 1979 Consolidated Standards for Psychiatric Facilities of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals are performance-oriented, with emphasis on the identification and resolution of problems interfering with treatment goals. Nearly 200 of these criteria can be rated directly by patients. Converted into questions, these items can provide the basis for simple, inexpensive, and effective measures of patient care flexible enough to meet the needs of individual agencies. When used in this way, the standards also provide a format by which a psychiatric program and the Joint Commission can focus collaboratively on quality assurance issues relevant to accreditation.

This study examined the relationship between internal-external control and several psychometric adjustment indices among 162 male alcoholics (mean age = 40.7) in an inpatient state vocational rehabilitation facility. Rotter's I-E scale was used to compare three subgroups of alcoholics (39 Internals, 82 Moderate scorers, and 41 Externals) on the Success-Failure Inventory, the Dogmatism Scale, the Future Outlook Inventory, the Alcadd Test, and the Multiple Affect Adjective Check List. Internal alcoholics were found to be significantly more success-oriented, less dogmatic and more optimistic in future adjustment outlook. I-E subgroup differences on these measures were not dependent on age and IQ variability present between I-E levels. Results suggest that locus of control-adjustment correlates exist within alcoholic as well as within previously studied "normal" samples.

A six-week psychiatric nursing training program for professional nurses (N equals 15) and nurses' aides (N equals 14) in a stage general hospital setting resulted in significant improvement in both training groups on psychiatric nursing knowledge. No statistically significant change in mental health attitudes was found on the Opinions about Mental Illness (OMI) scale in the nurse group but a significant reduction in social restrictiveness was revealed in the nurses' aide group. No significant change in knowledge or attitudes was found in a matched control group of nurses' aides (N equals 14).
