RESUMO

Presently, there is a high demand for nutritionally enhanced foods, so it is a current challenge to look at new raw food sources that can supplement beneficially the human diet. The nutritional profile and key secondary metabolites of red seaweeds (Rhodophyta) are gaining interest because of this challenge. In this context, the possible use of the red seaweed Chondracanthus teedei var. lusitanicus (Gigartinales) as a novel nutraceutical source was investigated. As a result, we highlight the high mineral content of this seaweed, representing 29.35 g 100 g-1 of its dry weight (DW). Despite the low levels of calcium and phosphorus (0.26 and 0.20 g 100 g-1 DW, respectively), this seaweed is an interesting source of nitrogen and potassium (2.13 and 2.29 g-1 DW, accordingly). Furthermore, the high content of carbohydrates (56.03 g 100 g-1 DW), which acts as dietary fibers, confers a low caloric content of this raw food source. Thus, this study demonstrates that C. teedei var. lusitanicus is in fact an unexploited potential resource with the capability to provide key minerals to the human diet with promising nutraceutical properties.

RESUMO

In this study, we show the effectiveness of a virtual environment comprising 18 computer games that cover mathematics topics in a playful setting and that can be executed on the Internet with the possibility of player interaction through chat. An arithmetic pre-test contained in the Scholastic Performance Test was administered to 300 children between 7 and 10 years old, including 162 males and 138 females, in the second grade of primary school. Twenty-six children whose scores showed a low level of mathematical knowledge were chosen and randomly divided into the control (CG) and experimental (EG) groups. The EG participated to the virtual environment and the CG participated in reinforcement using traditional teaching methods. Both groups took a post-test in which the Scholastic Performance Test (SPT) was given again. A statistical analysis of the results using the Student's t-test showed a significant learning improvement for the EG and no improvement for the CG (p≤0.05). The virtual environment allows the students to integrate thought, feeling and action, thus motivating the children to learn and contributing to their intellectual development.

RESUMO

UNLABELLED: Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus affects an increasing number of people throughout the world. Several studies have shown that it is possible to prevent and minimize type 2 diabetes complications, be it treated appropriately over time. This study aimed to determine the quality of care provided to type 2 diabetic patients in our institution, through metabolic control and risk factors evaluation. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We reviewed the medical records of 776 type 2 diabetic patients, followed at our outpatient clinic between 1998-2004. RESULTS: A total of 588 patients were included in the study, with a mean age of 66,8 ± 27,2 years. 58% were men. HbA1c levels averaged 7,2 ± 1,6. 57% had HbA1c = 7%. 25,3% met the target blood pressure of 130/80 mmHg; 48% met the goal LDL cholesterol level < 100 and 80% < 130 mg/dl. 6,8% of patients met the combined ADA goal for BP, LDL and HbA1c. Concerning therapeutic regimens: 71,5% used oral hypoglycaemic agents (OAD) alone (52,1% of these were using 2 or more agents); 28,5% were treated with insulin (16,2% in combination with OAD). 52,1% of the patients were anti-aggregated with aspirin. CONCLUSIONS: The metabolic control (HbA1c) and LDL values were favourable in our patients sample, comparing to other studies. The percentage of patients treated to the recommended BP of 130/80 mmHg is consistent with the literature. Only 6,8% of patients met the combined ADA goal for BP, LDL and HbA1c. Despite our comparable results to published data, we would like to highlight the difficulty to accomplish international recommendations to metabolic and risk factors control in clinical practice and the necessity of an aggressive approach to diabetes treatment.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Slight weight losses (5%) are consensually accepted as important in the treatment of obesity today. Some authors also consider that maintaining weight is an indicator of success in the treatment of this condition. OBJECTIVE: Characterisation and assessment of changes in weight in obese patients monitored at an obesity clinic in a hospital endocrinology department. METHODOLOGY: Retrospective analysis of the clinical files of the Endocrinology Clinic. The patients included were overweight adults (BMI = 25 kg/m2) who had been monitored since 1999 and were not suffering from thyroid dysfunction or hypercortisolism. Data were gathered on bio-demographic and anthropometric characteristics, reason for consultation, type of treatment, results achieved and dropouts. The statistical analysis included calculating central tendency measures and dispersion for the continuous variables and building frequency tables to describe the categorical variables. We used the t-test to compare average values between samples. Frequencies were compared by means of the chi-squared test or Fisher's exact test. The significance level was 5%. RESULTS: We studied 457 patients (60.6% female) with an average age of 53 years (DP +/- 15) and an average BMI of 32.4 +/- 5.1 Kg/m2. 51.9% of the patients came to the clinic because of overweight (n = 237) (Obesity Group-OBG), while the rest did so because of diabetes mellitus (35.4%) or some other disease (12.7%) (Other Cause Group-OCG). A dietary plan was prescribed for 86.1% (OBG) and 81.8% (OCG), drugs for 16.9% (OBG) and 6.4% (OCG) and physical activity for 77.6% (OBG) and 77.7% (OCG). The average weight loss was 2.1% in the OBG. The individuals who dropped out of the clinic had lost less weight (1.3% vs. 2.9%), although the difference was not significant. More than half (57.7%) of the individuals studied lost weight, 14.4% remained the same and 27.8% gained weight. CONCLUSIONS: 1) Only 50% of overweight patients come to our department to lose weight. 2) More than 75% of overweight patients have a prescribed, structured diet plan, regardless of the reason for their first visit. 3) About 75% of patients achieve acceptable objectives (maintaining or losing weight), and 25% of these have lost more than 5% of their initial weight.
