RESUMO

PURPOSE: A certain number of conditions can result in compromised anterior and/or posterior capsular integrity. Several surgical options have been employed for repositioning dislocated intraocular lenses in the absence of adequate capsular support. The purpose of this study is to assess the functional outcomes and complication profile of a modified surgical technique for replacing dislocated intraocular lenses. MATERIAL AND METHODS: All patients who had undergone the modified surgical procedure for dislocated intraocular lenses between 2012 and 2017 were retrospectively reviewed for visual outcomes and complications. Patient demographic characteristics, pre- and postoperative visual acuity, surgical indications, refractive outcomes, intraocular pressure and postoperative complications were recorded and analysed at baseline and at six months, which was the conclusion of the study. We also present our modified surgical technique. RESULTS: Sixty-eight eyes of sixty-eight patients (74% male) were included. Mean age at surgery was 58 years (range 4-89 years). Mean best-corrected visual acuity increased significantly from 0.80 (SD±0.2) LogMar to 0.40 (SD±0.1) LogMar (P<0.005). Median astigmatic error at the conclusion of follow-up remained stable. There were no intraoperative complications and a low postoperative complication rate (10.2%), mainly related to the surgical context. CONCLUSION: Sutureless intrascleral fixation of dislocated intraocular lenses is an option in case of deficient capsular support. Visual outcomes and complication rates are comparable to other case series.

RESUMO

Monozygotic twins with glutathione synthetase deficiency, progressive retinal dystrophy and cystoid macular edema were followed for foveal changes on optical coherence tomography under different treatment modalities. The purpose of the study is to show the effect of topical dorzolamide in conjunction with systemic acetazolamide in terms of decreasing macular edema in this specific disease. The results showed that systemic acetazolamide alone or in combination with topical dorzolamide decreased CME in both patients for a certain period of time. The result can be temporary sustained after treatment discontinuation. In conclusion, topical dorzolamide, in conjunction with systemic acetazolamide, could reduce cystoid macular edema in GSSD.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the short-, medium- and long-term efficacy of posterior fixation sutures with conventional surgery in controlling strabismus in the case of esotropia with distance-near incomitance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective study of consecutive patients with partially accommodative and non-accommodative esotropia associated with distance-near incomitance who underwent posterior fixation sutures along with conventional surgery. The preoperative and postoperative distance and near deviation measurements and the distance-near incomitance were evaluated at 1, 6 and 12 years. Surgical success was defined as a postoperative distance angle and a distance-near incomitance less than 10 prism diopters (PD). RESULTS: In total, 55 patients were included. Preoperatively, the mean distance deviation, near deviation and distance-near incomitance were 15.9 (± 3.4), 29.7 (± 5.8) and 13.8 (± 3.1) PD, respectively. Postoperatively, the mean distance deviation was 1.6 (± 0.8) PD (P < 0.001) at 1 year, 2.8 (± 1.6) PD (P< 0.005) at 6 years and 5.6 (± 2.4) PD (P < 0.05) at 12 years. The mean near deviation was 7.8 (± 2.3) PD (P < 0.001) at 1 year, 10.5 (± 3.7) PD (P < 0.005) at 6 years and 15.2 (± 4.4) PD (P < 0.05) at 12 years. The mean distance-near incomitance was 5.2 (± 1.8) PD (P < 0.01) at 1 year, 7.7 (± 2.8) PD (P < 0.05) at 6 years and 9.6 (± 3.2) PD (P > 0.05) at 12 years. The success rate was 91, 78 and 58% at 1, 6 and 12 years, respectively. CONCLUSION: Distance-near incomitance is a source of amblyopia. It needs to be corrected while treating an esotropia. This study seems to confirm the short- and medium-term efficacy of posterior fixation sutures along with conventional surgery in the treatment of this problem. It also seems to show progressive, albeit partial, loss of its long-term efficacy.

RESUMO

The bis(dihydrogen) complex RuH(2)(H(2))(2)(PCy(3))(2) (1) reacts with 2-phenyl-3,4-dimethylphosphaferrocene (L(1)) to give RuH(2)(H(2))(PCy(3))(2)(L(1)) (2). This dihydride-dihydrogen complex has been characterized by X-ray crystallography and variable-temperature (1)H and (31)P NMR spectroscopy. The exchange between the dihydrogen ligand and the two hydrides is characterized by a DeltaG() of 46.2 kJ/mol at 263 K. H/D exchange is readily observed when heating a C(7)D(8) solution of 2 (J(H-D) = 30 Hz). The H(2) ligand in 2 can be displaced by ethylene or carbon monoxide leading to the corresponding ethylene or carbonyl complexes. The reaction of 1 with 2 equiv of 3,4-dimethylphosphaferrocene (L(2)) yields the dihydride complex RuH(2)(PCy(3))(2)(L(2))(2) (5).

RESUMO

The azazirconacyclopentene-substituted phosphines 3 and 4 have been found to activate the C-H bonds of acetylenic systems, such as methylpropiolate, diphenylphosphinoacetylene and phenylacetylene, or of methylene compounds, such as malonitrile and diethylmalonate, to give complexes 5a-c, 6a and 6b. C-H bond activation also takes place with vinylacetate. Similar reactions with amines, alcohols, enolisable ketones, phenols, phosphonates, thiols and a second-generation SH-terminated dendrimer lead through X-H bond activation (X = N, O, P, S) to new complexes 8a-c, 9, 12 a,b, 13, 14a-c, 15, 16a and 16b. The azazirconacyclopentene-substituted amine 20 reacts to form analogous complexes. Zr-X bonds of these complexes (X = C, N, O, S) can be cleaved with diphenylchlorophosphine to give P-X phosphorus derivatives in high yield.

RESUMO

The crystal structure of a trimeric lignin model 1 presenting the characteristic pattern of biphenyl (5,5') and aryl-alkyl-ether (beta-O-4) linkages has been determined. The crystal system is triclinic and the crystallographic unit cell consists of two monomeric molecules. These results are compared with crystal data from the literature of simple models of the 5,5' and beta-O-4 structure type. The availability of a terminal aldehyde function on the model affords some interesting intermolecular interactions by weak hydrogen bonding which controls the conformation of the molecule and the aromatic ring orientation in particular; an unexpected cisoïd conformation of the biaryl unit is observed based on the 64.4 degrees value found for the torsion angle between the two 5,5' aromatic rings.

RESUMO

The tetranuclear [Ni4(pypentO)(pym)(mu 3-OH)2(mu-Oac)2(NCS)2(OH2)] cubane-like complex has been prepared, and its structure and magnetic properties have been studied (pypentO and pym are the deprotonated forms of 1,5-bis[(2-pyridylmethyl)amino]pentane-3-ol and 2-pyridylmethanol, respectively). The X-ray diffraction analysis of this novel nickel complex (C61H74N14O25.5S4Ni8, monoclinic, P2(1), a = 13.9375(14) A, b = 20.6604(18) A, c = 16.6684(19) A, beta = 110.619(12) degrees, Z = 2) showed a Ni4O4 cubane arrangement of four nickel atoms, four mu 3-O bridging ligands (one pypentO, one pym, and two OH-), two syn-syn bridging acetates, and three terminal monodentate ligands (two NCS- and one OH2). In this low-symmetry elongated cubane, the four Ni-Ni long distances (3.18 A) correspond to the faces of the cube including two mu 3-OR bridges, and the two Ni-Ni short distances (2.94 A) correspond to the faces including two mu 3-OR and one acetate bridges. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility was fitted with J1 = -3.09 cm-1, J2 = 15.0 cm-1, J3 = 6.72 cm-1, and g = 2.27. The differences in sign among the J1, J2, and J3 superexchange interactions is in good agreement with the different types of faces present in this Ni4O4 cubane core. The two faces of the cube, including two mu 3-OR bridges associated with one acetate bridge, exhibit ferromagnetic interactions, while the four faces which include only mu 3-OR bridges exhibit antiferromagnetic interactions. The very small zero field splitting may be attributed to the fact that the ground state is diamagnetic. The nature of the ground state is confirmed by the good simulation of the magnetization curves at 2 and 5 K (diagonalization of the full matrix taking into account all energy levels obtained with the parameter set resulting from the fit of the susceptibility curve). The large differences in J values resulting from small differences in Ni-O-Ni angles in this Ni4O4 core of very low symmetry reflect a quite strong magnetostructural correlation.

RESUMO

The oxidative addition of one equivalent of [Cp2V] (4) to the tetrayne ligand tBuC triple bond CC triple bond CC triple bond CC triple bond CtBu (5) gives the monometallic complex [Cp2V(3-4eta-tBuC triple bond C-C2-C triple bond CC triple bond CtBu)] (7). Compound 7 reacts further with a second equivalent of [Cp2V] to give the dimetallic complex [(Cp2V)2(1-2eta:7-8eta-tBuC2-C triple bond CC triple bond C-C2tBu)] (8), which involves a shift of the first coordinated [Cp2V] unit from the internal C3-C4 to the external C1-C2 positions on the alkynyl ligand. Compound 8 is also directly obtained by the addition of two equivalents of [Cp2V] to 5. Reversibly, reaction of 8 with 5 leads to 7. This exchange reaction between 7 and 8 by adding successively 5 and 4 has been monitored by EPR spectroscopy. By contrast, the oxidative addition of one or two equivalents of [Cp2V] to the tetrayne ligand PhC triple bond CC triple bond CC triple bond CC triple bond CPh (6) gives the homodimetallic complex [(Cp2V)2(1-2eta:7-8eta-PhC2-CC triple bond CC triple bond C-C2-Ph)] (9). Both monometallic and dimetallic complexes 7, 8, and 9 have been characterized by X-ray diffraction. Magnetic moment measurements for 8 and 9 from 300 to 4 K indicated a weak antiferromagnetic J exchange coupling of -12.5 and -4.1 cm(-1), respectively.

RESUMO

Polycyclic zwitterionic complexes that incorporate one or two phosphonium unit(s) as cationic center(s) and zirconocene-ate moiety(ies) as the anionic counterpart(s) can be easily prepared by either [1+3] or [1+3] and [2+3] cycloadditions which involve bi- or tricyclic alpha-zirconated phosphanes 3 or 4 and various azides. Some of these species exhibit unprecedented phosphazide chelation with bonding between the zirconium and a nitrogen atom in the alpha position relative to phosphorus. When heated, the phosphazide complexes lose dinitrogen to form stable polycyclic zwitterionic phosphonium mono- or dinuclear complexes. The solid-state structure of the two zwitterionic complexes 5 and 8 was determined by X-ray crystallography.
