RESUMO

Effective computational search holds great potential for aiding the discovery of high-temperature superconductors (HTSs), especially given the lack of systematic methods for their discovery. Recent progress has been made in this area with machine learning, especially with deep generative models, which have been able to outperform traditional manual searches at predicting new superconductors within existing superconductor families but have yet to be able to generate completely new families of superconductors. We address this limitation by implementing conditioning-a method to control the generation process-for our generative model and develop SuperDiff, a denoising diffusion probabilistic model with iterative latent variable refinement conditioning for HTS discovery-the first deep generative model for superconductor discovery with conditioning on reference compounds. With SuperDiff, by being able to control the generation process, we were able to computationally generate completely new families of hypothetical superconductors for the very first time. Given that SuperDiff also has relatively fast training and inference times, it has the potential to be a very powerful tool for accelerating the discovery of new superconductors and enhancing our understanding of them.

RESUMO

Despite having been discovered more than three decades ago, high temperature superconductors (HTSs) lack both an explanation for their mechanisms and a systematic way to search for them. To aid this search, this project proposes ScGAN, a generative adversarial network (GAN) to efficiently predict new superconductors. ScGAN was trained on compounds in Open Quantum Materials Database and then transfer learned onto the SuperCon database or a subset of it. Once trained, the GAN was used to predict superconducting candidates, and approximately 70% of them were determined to be superconducting by a classification model-a 23-fold increase in discovery rate compared to manual search methods. Furthermore, more than 99% of predictions were novel materials, demonstrating that ScGAN was able to potentially predict completely new superconductors, including several promising HTS candidates. This project presents a novel, efficient way to search for new superconductors, which may be used in technological applications or provide insight into the unsolved problem of high temperature superconductivity.

RESUMO

Rho/ROCK signaling induced after spinal cord injury (SCI) contributes to secondary damage by promoting apoptosis, inflammation, and axon growth inhibition. The specific Rho-kinase inhibitor fasudil can contribute to functional regeneration after SCI, although inherent low stability has hampered its use. To improve the therapeutic potential of fasudil, we now describe a family of rationally-designed bioresponsive polymer-fasudil conjugates based on an understanding of the conditions after SCI, such as low pH, enhanced expression of specific proteases, and a reductive environment. Fasudil conjugated to poly-l-glutamate via a self-immolative redox-sensitive linker (PGA-SS-F) displays optimal release kinetics and, consequently, treatment with PGA-SS-F significantly induces neurite elongation and axon growth in dorsal root ganglia explants, spinal cord organotypic cultures, and neural precursor cells (NPCs). The intrathecal administration of PGA-SS-F after SCI in a rat model prevents early apoptosis and induces the expression of axonal growth- and neuroplasticity-associated markers to a higher extent than the free form of fasudil. Moreover, a combination treatment comprising the acute transplantation of NPCs pre-treated with PGA-SS-F leads to enhanced cell engraftment and reduced cyst formation after SCI. In chronic SCI, combinatory treatment increases the preservation of neuronal fibers. Overall, this synergistic combinatorial strategy may represent a potentially efficient clinical approach to SCI treatment.

RESUMO

AIM: To evaluate the hypothesis that breast arterial calcification (BAC) may predict coronary artery disease (CAD) severity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study comprised 102 women >45 years (mean age 62±8 years) referred for digital mammography after coronary angiography. BAC was assessed using the Likert scale and CAD severity was assessed using the SYNTAX (SYNergy between percutaneous coronary intervention with TAXus and cardiac surgery trial) score. RESULTS: In comparison to the low SYNTAX score group (≤22) patients with a intermediate-to-high SYNTAX score (>22) were older (p=0.001), they more often had hypercholesterolaemia (p<0.001), diabetes (p=0.021), and a history of smoking (p=0.048). They also had a statistically higher level of fasting blood glucose (p<0.001), glycated haemoglobin (HbA1C; p<0.001), triglycerides (p=0.002), fibrinogen (p=0.001), whereas high-density lipoprotein (HDLc) was lower than in the group with a SYNTAX score ≤22 (p=0.005). BAC was significantly higher in patients with a SYNTAX score >22 (p<0.001). At multivariate analysis, BAC (odds ratio [OR] 34.24, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 8.05-145.7, p<0.001), hypercholesterolaemia (OR 22.65, 95% CI: 4.18-122.81, p<0.001) and fibrinogen (OR 2.55, 95% CI: 1.28-5.07, p=0.008) were independent predictive factors for patients with intermediate-to-high SYNTAX score. CONCLUSIONS: In women >45 years, there was a significant correlation between the severity of CAD as evaluated by the SYNTAX score and BAC as evaluated by the Likert scale. BAC, hypercholesterolaemia, and fibrinogen may be used as an additional diagnostic tool to predict the presence and severity of CAD.

RESUMO

We studied the magneto-optical response of a canonical topological insulator Bi2Se3 with the goal of addressing a controversial issue of electron-phonon coupling. Magnetic-field induced modifications of reflectance are very pronounced in the infrared part of the spectrum, indicating strong electron-phonon coupling. This coupling causes an asymmetric line-shape of the 60 cm(-1) phonon mode, and is analyzed within the Fano formalism. The analysis reveals that the Fano asymmetry parameter (q) changes sign when the cyclotron resonance is degenerate with the phonon mode. To the best of our knowledge this is the first example of magnetic field driven q-reversal.

RESUMO

Dormant buds are recognized as valuable side product of the blackcurrant cultivation. Four blackcurrant varieties cultivated in Serbia, i.e., Ben Sarek, Ometa, Ben Lomond, and Ben Nevis, were evaluated for the content, chemical composition, and antimicrobial activity of their bud essential oils. The oil yields of buds harvested during two different growth periods ranged from 1.2-2.0%, and the variety Ometa had the highest yield among the tested varieties. GC-FID and GC/MS analysis of the oils allowed the identification of eight main components, i.e., α-pinene (1.6-5.4%), sabinene (1.9-38.4%), δ-car-3-ene (13.0-50.7%), ß-phellandrene (2.9-18.0%), terpinolene (6.6-11.9%), terpinen-4-ol (0.9-6.6%), ß-caryophyllene (3.8-10.4%), and α-humulene (0.2-4.1%). In addition, the similarity degree of the essential-oil compositions of buds harvested from the upper and lower parts of the shrubs was investigated by hierarchical clustering. All essential oils originating from the same genotype were grouped in the same cluster, indicating the reliability of essential oils as chemotaxonomic markers. For more detailed chemotaxonomic investigations, the three compounds with the greatest variance were chosen, i.e., sabinene, δ-car-3-ene, and ß-phellandrene, which proved to be efficient for the variety distinction. Factor analysis showed that the essential-oil composition as chemotaxonomic marker in blackcurrants was more reliable for variety Ben Sarek than for variety Ben Nevis. Moreover, it was demonstrated that the essential oils had very strong inhibitory activity against all tested microorganisms. Fungi were more sensitive than bacteria; indeed their growth was completely inhibited at much lower concentrations. In comparison to commercial antibiotics, significantly lower concentrations of the oils were necessary for the complete inhibition of fungal growth.

RESUMO

We present the results of an infrared spectroscopy study of topological insulators Bi(2)Se(3), Bi(2)Te(3) and Sb(2)Te(3). Reflectance spectra of all three materials look similar, with a well defined plasma edge. However, there are some important differences. Most notably, as temperature decreases the plasma edge shifts to lower frequencies in Bi(2)Se(3), whereas in Bi(2)Te(3) and Sb(2)Te(3) it shifts to higher frequencies. In the loss function spectra we identify asymmetric broadening of the plasmon, and assign it to the presence of charge inhomogeneities. It remains to be seen if charge inhomogeneities are characteristic of all topological insulators, and whether they are of intrinsic or extrinsic nature.

RESUMO

We report a novel aspect of the competition and coexistence between magnetism and superconductivity in the high-T(c) cuprate La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO4 (La214). With a modest magnetic field applied H parallel c axis, we monitored the infrared signature of pair tunneling between the CuO2 planes and discovered the complete suppression of interlayer coupling in a series of underdoped La214 single crystals. We find that the in-plane superconducting properties remain intact, in spite of enhanced magnetism in the planes.

RESUMO

The ab-plane optical properties of a cleaved single crystal of La2-xBaxCuO4 for x=1/8 (Tc approximately =2.4 K) have been measured over a wide frequency and temperature range. The low-frequency conductivity is Drude-like and shows a metallic response with decreasing temperature. However, below approximately =60 K, corresponding to the onset of charge-stripe order, there is a rapid loss of spectral weight below about 40 meV. The behavior is quite different from that typically associated with the pseudogap in the normal state of the cuprates. Instead, the gapping of the normal-state single-particle excitations looks surprisingly similar to that observed in superconducting La2-xSrxCuO4, including the presence of a residual Drude peak with reduced weight.

RESUMO

The pharmacokinetics and relative bioavailability of fluoxetine capsules (reference) and tablets (test) were compared in 24 healthy subjects of both sexes after a single 20 mg oral dose of fluoxetine (as a hydrochloride salt). A randomized, crossover design with a 2-week wash-out period between each dose was applied. Serum samples, obtained before dosing and at various appropriate time points up to 192 hours, were analyzed for fluoxetine and norfluoxetine content by a simple, accurate and precise HPLC method. ANOVA, power analysis, 90% confidence intervals (CI), and two one-sided tests were used for the statistical analysis of pharmacokinetic parameters. The tolerability of the preparations was good. The respective point estimates of the ratios of the geometric means of log-Cmax and log-AUC(0-infinity) of fluoxetine were 0.912 and 0.935 with 90% of 0.838-0.992 and 0.857-1.020. The corresponding point estimates of norfluoxetine were 0.952 (90% CI = 0.843-1.075) and 0.904 (90% CI = 0.807-1.013), respectively. Since both 90% CI for the AUC(0-infinity). and Cmax geometric mean ratios of fluoxetine and norfluoxetine were included in the 80% to 125% interval proposed by the FDA the test drug (fluoxetine tablets) was considered bioequivalent to the reference one (Prozac capsules) according both to the rate and extent of absorption.

RESUMO

We report a comprehensive infrared magnetospectroscopy study of a CeRu4Sb12 compound revealing quasiparticles with a heavy effective mass m*, with a detailed analysis of optical constants in fields up to 17 T. We find that the applied magnetic field strongly affects the low-energy excitations in the system. In particular, the magnitude of m* approximately = 70 m(b) (m(b) is the quasiparticle band mass) at 10 K is suppressed by as much as 25% at 17 T. This effect is in quantitative agreement with the mean-field solution of the periodic Anderson model augmented with a Zeeman term.

RESUMO

Since the discovery of superconductivity at elevated temperatures in the copper oxide materials there has been a considerable effort to find universal trends and correlations amongst physical quantities, as a clue to the origin of the superconductivity. One of the earliest patterns that emerged was the linear scaling of the superfluid density (rho(s)) with the superconducting transition temperature (T(c)), which marks the onset of phase coherence. This is referred to as the Uemura relation, and it works reasonably well for the underdoped materials. It does not, however, describe optimally doped (where T(c) is a maximum) or overdoped materials. Similarly, an attempt to scale the superfluid density with the d.c. conductivity (sigma(dc)) was only partially successful. Here we report a simple scaling relation (rho(s) proportional, variant sigma(dc)T(c), with sigma(dc) measured at approximately T(c)) that holds for all tested high-T(c) materials. It holds regardless of doping level, nature of dopant (electrons versus holes), crystal structure and type of disorder, and direction (parallel or perpendicular to the copper-oxygen planes).

RESUMO

We report the results of optical studies of new heavy fermion compounds YbFe(4)Sb(12) and CeRu(4)Sb(12). We show that these compounds, as well as several other heavy fermion materials with a nonmagnetic ground state, obey a universal scaling relationship between the quasiparticle effective mass m(*) and the magnitude of the energy gap Delta in the excitation spectrum. This result is in accord with the picture of hybridization of localized f-electron and free carrier states.

RESUMO

A lot of pathophysiological factors can cause increased activation of smooth muscle contractile mechanisms resulting in long-lasting contractions-spasms. They significantly increase the intercellular concentration of calcium ions and/or increase the affinity of thin contractile filaments for them. The most frequently used drugs in the therapy of visceral smooth muscle spasms are substances that relax smooth muscles (with antimuscarinic activity/atropine-like/or with non-specific activity/papaverine-like direct spasmolytics) and analgesics (opioids or nonsteroid antiinflammatory drugs-NSAID). In the treatment of biliary and renal colics NSAIDs for parenteral use were equally or more efficient than spasmolytics or opioid analgesics. Organic nitrates relax smooth muscles efficiently, but this effect is short-lasting due to their rapid liver metabolism. Experiences with other drugs that could be useful in spastic visceral conditions are still scarce (calcium channel blockers, botulinum toxin, metoclopramide etc). Due to diversity of mechanisms of action of spasmogenic factors, further investigations are directed to discovery of more efficient and more selective drugs than these currently used.

RESUMO

The aim of this paper was to clear some dilemmas about the surgical treatment of chest injuries. In the period April 1992-December 1993 in the General Hospital of Foca 160 chest injuries were treated (71 penetrating and 89 unpenetrating injuries) that was 10.2% of the total number of injuries. The explosive injuries were 53.8% of cases and 46.2% sclopetary injuries. Those injuries dominated in 93 wounded and in 57 cases the injuries were associated. The isolated injuries were in 40% and combined ones in 60% of cases. Thirty five thoracotomies and 40 thorax drainages were done while on the rest of the wounded only surgical wound treatment was performed. The active immunization and antibiotic prophylaxis were performed on the wounded. The infection problem was present in one operated person and lethality rate was 4.4%. The treatment results were good due to the appropriate organization of the surgical service and timely primary specialist aid as well as sufficient quantity of blood and timely and adequate surgical procedure.

RESUMO

Skeletal muscles, exposed to a prolonged period of specific functional demands, respond adaptively. Electrical stimulation, when employed as a technique for subjecting selected muscles to altered use, enables precise entrainment of the pattern of functional activity. In this investigation, the vastus lateralis muscle in a group of volunteers was stimulated. The stimulation program typical of a phasic type of activity (high frequency, high current amplitude, short pulse duration) intermittently subjected the stimulated muscles to brief periods of intense activity, followed by relatively long pauses. The activation-relaxation time ratio chosen was 1 to 13. It was determined to prevent the muscles from fatiguing. The effects of the chronic stimulation program were established by measurements of the time course of contraction and relaxation and fatigue of the vastus lateralis muscle. Chronic phasic electrical stimulation increased the speed of muscle contraction by 15% while the fatigue characteristics remained unchanged.
