This work investigated the physical stability, microstructure, and oxidative stability of the emulsions prepared by soy protein hydrolysate (SPH) after modification with different concentrations of l-arginine and l-lysine. l-Arginine and l-lysine significantly increased the absolute zeta potential values, and decreased droplet sizes of the emulsions, thereby improving the physical stability of the emulsions. Meanwhile, l-arginine and l-lysine markedly decreased the apparent viscosity of the emulsions. The measurement of interfacial protein adsorption percentage showed that l-arginine (≤0.5 %) promoted the adsorption of SPH at the oil-water interface, whereas l-lysine (≤1%) reduced the adsorption of SPH at the oil-water interface. In addition, l-arginine and l-lysine (≤0.5 %) could retard lipid and protein oxidation. Correlation analysis indicated that the improvement in the physical stability of the emulsions by l-arginine and l-lysine also enhanced the oxidative stability of the emulsions. In summary, l-arginine and l-lysine could be effective modifiers for the protein-based emulsion systems.

Objective: To compare the efficacy and safety of different-course corticosteroids plus mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) as maintenance therapy in autoimmune encephalitis (AE) with neuronal surface antibodies (NSAbs) without tumor and explore the optimal course of corticosteroids. Methods: Fifty-five patients with definite AE without tumor were enrolled consecutively between June 2015 and November 2020 and retrospectively divided three groups according to the course of treatment with corticosteroid, i.e., a group of patients with a course of 3-6 months (Group 3-6mo), 6-12 months (Group 6-12mo), and >12 months (Group >12mo). Demographic data, clinical manifestation and ancillary tests results were recorded. The dosage and courses of corticosteroid treatment, the recovery of neurological function, the occurrence of adverse effects, and relapses were followed up. Results: A total of 55 patients were included in the final analysis. The numbers of patients in Group 3-6 mo, Group 6-12 mo, and Group >12 mo was 14, 17, and 24, respectively. A significantly higher proportion of patients in Group >12 mo showed a decreased level of consciousness at the onset (12, 50%) than in Group 3-6 mo and Group 6-12 mo (2,14.3%; 3, 17.6%) (p = 0.033). The incidence of MRI abnormalities was significantly higher in Group 6-12 mo and Group >12 mo (10, 58.8%; 16, 66.7%) than in Group 3-6 mo (3, 21.4%) (P=0.023). Ordinal regression analysis indicated that decreased level of consciousness was associated with the course of corticosteroid (OR=3.838, 95% CI: 1.103-13.323, P=0.035). No significant difference was observed between the three groups regarding the cumulative dose of corticosteroids administered during the first three months of long-term treatment (P>0.05). Additionally, no significant difference in the cumulative dosage of corticosteroids was found between patients in Group 6-12 months and Group >12 months during the first 6 months after beginning long-term treatment. The mRS scores of the three groups were not statistically significant before and after first-line treatment or at the last follow-up. Bonferroni multiple comparison test indicated that the mRS scores of patients in Group 6-12 months and Group >12 months were not statistically significant at 3 months and 12 months after the start of long-term treatment. During the follow-up, 50 (90.9%) patients achieved satisfactory neurological function (mRS score ≤2). Five patients (9.1%) experienced a first relapse and 2 of them were overlapped with both anti-NMDA receptor and glial antibodies. The incidence of adverse effects was significantly higher in Group >12 mo (17, 70.8%) than in Group 3-6 mo (3, 21.4%) and Group 6-12 mo (5, 29.4%) (P=0.003). Conclusions: The beneficial effects of oral corticosteroid treatment may do not persist beyond 12 months and may even contribute to an increased incidence of adverse effects. In order to optimize the effectiveness and safety of treatment, we recommend a corticosteroid course of 3-12 months. Patients with reduced levels of consciousness may be more inclined to choose longer courses of corticosteroids for long-term treatment. Patients with an "overlapping syndrome" may require more intense immunotherapy to prevent relapse.

The design of the nanostructure of palladium-based nanocatalysts is considered to be a very effective way to improve the performance of nanocatalysts. Recent studies have shown that multiphase nanostructures can increase the active sites of palladium catalysts, thus effectively improving the catalytic efficiency of palladium atoms. However, it is difficult to regulate the phase structure of Pd nanocatalysts to form a compound phase structure. In this work, PdSnP nanocatalysts with different compositions were synthesized by fine-regulating the doping amount of phosphorus atoms. The results show that the doping of phosphorus atoms not only changes the composition of PdSn nanocatalysts but also changes the microstructure, forming amorphous and crystalline multiphase structures. This multiphase nanostructure contains abundant interfacial defects, which effectively promotes the electrocatalytic oxidation efficiency of Pd atoms in small-molecule alcohols. Compared with the undoped PdSn nanocatalyst (480 mA mgPd-1 and 2.28 mA cm-2) and the commercial Pd/C catalyst (397 mA mgPd-1 and 1.15 mA cm-2), the mass (1746 mA mgPd-1) and specific activities (8.56 mA cm-2) of PdSn0.38P0.05 nanocatalysts in the methanol oxidation reaction were increased by 3.6 and 3.8 times and 4.4 and 7.4 times, respectively. This study provides a new synthesis strategy for the design and synthesis of efficient palladium-based nanocatalysts for the oxidation of small-molecule alcohols.

Food-grade Pickering emulsions stabilized by protein microgel particles have received increasing attentions owing to their potential applications in the food industry. Herein, soy protein hydrolysate microgel particles (SPHMs) produced at various pH (3, 5, 7, and 9) with and without ultrasonication were used to stabilize Pickering emulsions. Compared with those prepared using ultrasonication at pH 3-7, SPHMs prepared using ultrasonication at pH 9 showed excellent amphiphility at the oil-water interface and a superior ability to reduce interfacial tension. The Pickering emulsion stabilized by the latter SPHMs displayed a small particle size and a high net charge on the droplet surface, formed a dense honeycomb network interfacial layer with high viscoelasticity and adsorbed protein content, and experienced no visually detectable creaming during storage for 21 days, i.e., exhibited optimum colloidal stability. Furthermore, the above emulsion featured a quercetin encapsulation efficiency of 89.45 % and was capable of sustainable release, achieving a low free fatty acid release efficiency of 61 % and a relatively high quercetin bioaccessibility of 65 % in in vitro simulated digestion experiments. Thus, this work inspires the use of SPHMs in emulsion-based functional foods.

This study aimed to evaluate the gelation characteristics of soybean protein hydrolysate (SPH) extracted by enzyme-assisted aqueous extraction. Specifically, the changes in gelation behaviors for heat-induced (95 °C, 20 min) SPH dispersions treated with pH (pH 3, 5, 9; pH 7 as control) and ultrasound (U; 240 W, 30 min) were investigated. The results showed that typical gel behavior with high elastic nature in the viscoelasticity and network structures were observed during the heating process, where the disulfide bond played a dominant role in the gel network formation of all the samples. Notably, the heat-induced aggregation in the SPH gels was mainly formed by the association of the basic B polypeptide in 11S and ß subunit in 7S. The most superior SPH gel was formed at pH 7 when assisted by ultrasonication during the heating process. This as-synthesized gel showed a uniform filamentous structure and exhibited the more excellent textural, rheological and thermal properties than those of the samples formed under acidic and alkaline conditions. These results are of great value in revealing the gelation mechanism of SPH.

PREMISE OF THE STUDY: Pinus wangii is an endemic and endangered species in southwestern China, and microsatellite primers were developed to characterize its genetic diversity and population structure. • METHODS AND RESULTS: Using the Fast Isolation by AFLP of Sequences COntaining repeats (FIASCO) protocol, nine sets of microsatellite primers were developed in P. wangii. One population with 26 individuals of P. wangii, as well as 11 individuals each for two congeneric species, P. taiwanensis and P. squamata, were used to test their polymorphism and transferability. The number of alleles per locus ranged from one to seven with an average of 3.7, and the observed heterozygosity and expected heterozygosity ranged from 0 to 0.91 and 0 to 0.75, respectively. • CONCLUSIONS: We developed nine sets of polymorphic microsatellite loci that are suitable for investigating genetic diversity and population structure of P. wangii, and these markers may be useful for other Pinus species.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the transdermal delivery characteristics of Gentiana macrophylla complex components system through different parts of the skin under micro-needles conditions. Two-chamber diffusion cells were used, different parts of isolated skin and micro-needle pretreated isolated mouse skin were applied separately, high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) similarity evaluation methods were used to evaluate transdermal delivery characteristics of Gentiana macrophylla complex components system on receiving pool and the permeation rate and penetration amount of Gentiopicroside at different parts of mouse skin. In the 24 h, the similarity between receiving fluid which was on passive transdermal delivery and micro-needle transdermal delivery conditions and original fluid were ranged from 83.0% to 98.9%; By the micro-needle pretreatment with different parts of the mouse skin, the time that Gentiana macrophylla complex components system though abdominal skin to the receiving fluid which reached 90% similarity compared with that of original fluid was 4 h, which was 18 h at back skin and 12 h at neck skin separately. Micro-needles can be used as the ideal ingredients for traditional Chinese medicine complex transdermal delivery; transdermal absorption time delay could be greatly reduced and its bioavailability was improved. The permeation rate and similarity to original liquid of Chinese medicine complex components increased significantly in the abdominal skin relative to the neck and back skin under micro-needle conditions.
