RESUMO

The paper summarizes current knowledge on the diseases of the oral cavity that may be related to diabetes mellitus. It draws the attention to the symptoms that signify potential association between the oral cavity disease and so far undiagnosed diabetes. Attention is paid to a connection between type 2 diabetes and periodontitis, as it is known that diabetes mellitus may contribute to the development of periodontitis, although a reciprocal link also exists and decompensated diabetes may be improved when periodontitis is cured.

RESUMO

The total white blood cell count, percentage and total count of lymphocytes, CD3+, CD4+, and CD8+ subpopulations of T-lymphocytes, population of CD20+ B-lymphocytes, the ability of polymorphonuclears to phagocyte yeasts, the ability of polymorphonuclear cells to kill serum-resistant strain of E. coli and O2-dependent killing capacity of polymorphonuclears were evaluated in a group of 10 patients with the sicca syndrome and in a group of 9 patients with secondary Sjögren's syndrome and in a healthy control group. There was found a significant decrease in the relative and absolute counts of CD4+ helper/inducer T cells and in the activity of phygocytic cells in both groups of patients with Sjögren's syndrome as compared with the control group. There was no significant difference in the evaluated parameters between primary and secondary Sjögren's syndrome patients.

RESUMO

In 187 residents of houses for the aged and 80 old persons living in one-man households in Hradec Králové, the authors proceeded by comparing the functional state of dentition, rate of pathological changes on the oral mucosa, level oral hygiene and regularity of stomatological care. Both groups showed no significant difference in numbers of male or female subjects, in age distribution nor in the educational level. Stomatological findings were more favorable in those living in their homes. This was probably caused by significantly higher numbers of self-sufficient persons than in the group of population living in the homes for aged.

RESUMO

The attempt had been made to determine interrelations in the incidence of dental caries and dental of frontal dentition in a total of 100 healthy individuals aged 21-40 years. Caries susceptibility was evaluated as averagely higher in the upper frontal denture and lower in lower one. Both supragingival and subgingival forms of dental calculus were of rare occurrence in upper portion, and they occurred massively in lower portion of denture. In the upper frontal portion, the significant correlation has been stated statistically between the caries susceptibility and the quantity of both forms of dental calculus. The higher was caries susceptibility, the lower was the amount of dental calculus. The lower frontal denture showed the significant differences as to the incidence of supragingival calculus at various degree of caries susceptibility in the same sense as in the upper one. No difference in unsatisfactory status of dental hygiene was determined in both portions observed. The periodontal disorder was more expressed with age and it showed no significant difference in both mentioned portions.

RESUMO

Following examination numbers are presented as provided during 3 years in aged: 253 subjects from the homes for elderly, 151 patients from the medical institution for longterm states and 80 aged subjects living in their homes. The mentioned screening was aimed to ascertain the stomatological findings, the need in dentistry examination, its availability in both geriatric and outgeriatric elderly. Partial problems have been worked out as 8 separate studies. In aging people from geriatric institutions, the following conditions were evaluated: the state of jaw denture, its functional capacity, mortality of separate groups of teeth, oral mucosa state, level of oral hygiene and its impact on the finding of yeast in carriers of prostheses, salivatory changes and disturbances of the temporal joint. The main stomatological findings and the use of dental examination have been compared between the group allocated at homes for elderly and that living in domestic conditions. The prerequisites of dental care were ascertained using inventories at geriatric institutions of East Bohemian region.

RESUMO

The increased frequency of HLA-B8 in Sjögren's syndrome was recently reported independently by Gershwin et al. (1975) and Iványi et al. (1976). The association of HLA-B8 antigen with other diseases, characterized generally by impaired immunologic reactivity, has been shown (see Svejgaard et al. 1975, Dausset & Hors 1975), and in some of these diseases MLC typing has revealed the strong association also with the Dw3 determinant. The degree of association with each of the two, B8 and Dw3, varied between different diseases, in some of them having been reported to be higher for antigen B8 (Möller et al. 1976) and in the others for the determinant Dw3 (Thomsen et al. 1975, 1976). In some of the diseases, the association was found to be equally strong for both determinants (Solheim et al. 1976, Thorsby et al. 1975). In this communication, we describe the typing of HLA-Dw3 in 29 patients with Sjögren's syndrome (Ss). They represent part of the experimental group reported in a previous study (Iványi et al. 1976).
