RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Potential role of L-arginine supplementation as a new effective strategy of improving endothelial function in patients with hypertension is recently under consideration. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate influence of 28-day oral supplementation of L-arginine on plasma level of asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), L-citrulline, L-arginine and total antioxidant status (TAS), in patients with mild arterial hypertension. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: 54 participants (24 women and 30 men) were studied. Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) was used for allotting patients to either healthy control group (19 subjects) or hypertensive treatment group (35 patients). Patients were later randomized to either L-arginine (2 g tid or 4 g tid) or placebo. During 28 days of study on 5 consecutive visits TAS, plasma level of ADMA, L-citrulline, and L-arginine were measured. RESULTS: In patients with mild hypertension treated with L-arginine significant increase in TAS and plasma level of arginine and citrulline was observed. Additionally plasma ADMA concentrations after 28 days of L-arginine supplementation significantly exceeded initial concentrations. CONCLUSIONS: L-arginine supplementation increases plasma arginine, citrulline and TAS in patients with mild arterial hypertension. It confirms the thesis that augmented concentrations of L-arginine stimulate NO biosynthesis which leads to reduction of oxidative stress. Increase of ADMA plasma level after L-arginine supplementation confirms correlation between ADMA and L-arginine.

RESUMO

The results of Brillouin scattering investigations of two-component system: 2,2-bis[4-(2-hydroxy-3-methacryloxypropoxy)phenyl]propane/polyethylene glycol methacrylate (bis-GMA/PEGMM) containing 0, 30, 50, 70, 85 and 100 mol% of PEGMM are presented. For the first time the Brillouin spectroscopy was used to monitor the progress of the polymerization process. The polymerization was initiated by ultraviolet radiation (λ=365 nm), at temperature 20°C and 40°C. Some of the physical parameters characteristic for this system such as velocity V, adiabatic compressibility ß(ad) and attenuation coefficient α of the acoustic waves have been estimated from Brillouin spectra as a functions of the polymerization time. The obtained results have been discussed in terms of changes of the elastic properties of the two-component system occurring during polymerization process and their dependence on bis-GMA/PEGMM system composition.

RESUMO

Brillouin spectroscopy was used to investigate viscoelastic properties of a two-component system consisting of a high viscosity liquid (HVL) and a low viscosity liquid (LVL), both able to polymerize. The model liquids were: 2,2-bis[4-(2-hydroxymethacryloxypropoxy)phenyl]propane (abbreviated as bis-GMA, HVL) and benzyl methacrylate (BzMA, LVL). The viscosity of the system was regulated by changing the monomer ratio. Hypersonic velocity and attenuation coefficient were investigated in a temperature range covering viscoelastic relaxation process. The dependence of the longitudinal viscosity on the system composition was determined. Additionally, the Brillouin studies were accompanied by some supplementary experimental methods, like low frequency shear viscosity measurements and observations of phase transitions by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The investigated monomer mixtures were then polymerized in a light-induced process and the polymerization kinetic curves were measured to find the possible correlation between the viscoelastic properties of the monomer mixture (as observed by Brillouin spectroscopy) and the polymerization course.

RESUMO

In this article, we present orientation study of metallophthalocyanine (MPcs) (CoPc, ZnPc, CuPc, and MgPc) thin films deposited on silicon substrate. The MPc's thin layers were obtained by the quasi-molecular beam evaporation. The micro-Raman scattering spectra of MPc's thin films were investigated in the spectral range 550-1650 cm-1 using 488 nm excitation wavelength. Raman scattering studies were performed at room temperature before and after annealing process. Annealing process of thin layers was carried out at 200 °C for 6 h. From polarized Raman spectra using surface Raman mapping, the information on polymorphic phase of MPc's layers has been obtained. The chosen Raman modes A1g and B1g are connected with different polymorphic phases of MPc (α and ß form) thin layers. Moreover, the obtained results showed the influence of the annealing process on the ordering of the molecular structure. Following the annealing process, it was observed arrangement of the thin layers structure being revealed in Raman spectra. The obtained results indicate that the annealing process has a significant influence on the structure of thin layers being under study.

RESUMO

We present results obtained by Brillouin scattering method for four two-component systems comprising of a high viscosity monomer and a low viscosity monomer. The monomers used were crosslinking (divinyl) or linear (monovinyl) ones. The investigated systems were: divinyl/divinyl-bis-GMA/TEGDM; divinyl/monovinyl-bis-GMA/PEGMM; monovinyl/divinyl-bis-MGMA/TEGDM and monovinyl/monovinyl-bis-MGMA/PEGMM; they were formulated at various molar ratios. The measurements have been performed in temperature range 293-353 K. The following physical parameters characterizing the investigated systems were estimated: hypersonic velocity V, attenuation coefficient α and adiabatic compressibility ß, all as a function of temperature and monomer molar ratio. The obtained results have been discussed in terms of the influence of the system composition and viscosity on their elastic properties. Speed of changes of the adiabatic compressibility ß as derivative have been also discussed in terms of both, the temperature as well as the component of molar ratio.

RESUMO

It has been revealed that lanthanum calcium borate (La2CaB10O19) crystals show two-photon absorption (TPA) induced by a UV laser field. UV-induced TPA measurements were performed in the spectral range of 475-1130 nm using as fundamental beam the third harmonics of the 28 ps Nd-YAG pulsed laser as a pumping beam for LiB3O5 optical parametrized generator using Z-scan method. Investigations performed by the Z-scan method were done during illumination by a Xe-F laser (lambda = 217 nm) as a photoinducing (pumping) beam. The pumping laser beam created a thin surface layer (about 80-90 nm) that was the source of the observed photoinduced TPA. The highest values of the TPA beta coefficients were achieved for polarization of the pumping light directed along the second-order crystallographic axis of the investigated crystals. The obtained values of the TPA coefficients were higher than those for the BiB3O6 crystals investigated earlier by us.
