RESUMO

The growing water scarcity due to international trade poses a serious threat to global sustainability. Given the intensified international trade throughout the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), this paper tracks the virtual water trade and water footprint of BRI countries in 2005-2015. By conducting a multi-model assessment, we observe a substantial increase in BRI's water footprint after taking water scarcity into account. Globally the BRI acts as a net exporter of virtual water, while the export volume experiences a decreasing trend. Noticeable transitions in nations' role (net exporters vs. net importers) are found between the BRI and global scales, but also between with and without considering water scarcity. Overall economic and population growth is major drivers of scarcity-weighted water footprint for BRI nations, as opposed to the promotion of water-use efficiency and production structure that can reduce water scarcity. Improving international trade and strengthening cooperation on water resources management deserve priority in alleviating the water scarcity of BRI.

In this paper, using hollow silica microspheres as carriers, we developed a facile one-pot method for the preparation of hollow SiO2@MnO2 composite microparticles. Under a certain proportion of hollow silica microspheres and manganese salt, a novel kind of hollow urchin-like SiO2@γ-MnO2 microparticles was obtained. The structure and morphology of the composite microparticles were characterized by XRD, SEM and TEM. On this basis, using rhodamine B and methyl orange as model molecules, the oxidative degradation ability of the hollow SiO2@γ-MnO2 microparticles for organic dyes in water was investigated through UV-vis analysis technology. The urchin-like SiO2@γ-MnO2 microparticles showed excellent performance for the rapid oxidative degradation of organic dyes under acidic conditions. This study indicated that γ-MnO2 loaded on hollow materials can be used as an efficient tool for treating organic dye wastewater, and shows broad application prospects for solving environmental problems in the related industry.

Increasingly growing consumption-based water use (WU) combined with climate change have exacerbated water stress globally and regionally, yet little is known about how the WU change is affected by metacoupled processes which involve human-nature interactions across space; within and across adjacent and distant places. This study aims to unveil the spatio-temporal pattern of China's WUs during 2007-2015 and its underlying local and non-local drivers. Results show that China's total WU exhibited an upward trend from 386.7 billion m³; in 2007 to 431.2 billion m³ in 2012 but dropped to 412.6 billion m³ by 2015. Widespread and continuous water use efficiency improvement contributed most to offsetting the increase in WU driven by the rising affluence and growing population in the context of rapid urbanization and industrialization. Economic structure drove a relatively large WU reduction (responsible for -23.7% of the WU change during 2007-2015), in line with China's ongoing transform from a capital investment-driven economy to a consumption-driven one and decoupling economic growth from environmental pressure. The population share representing the non-local factor of migration effect was large enough to be seen clearly in the changing WUs across China: the WUs of coastal areas ascended while inland areas descended, which was in accordance with migration patterns. Our findings could make a valuable contribution to decision-making in identifying hotspot areas, charting systematic courses for sustainable water use, and combining demand-oriented and supply-oriented measures.

With the increasing contradiction between water demand and supply in a telecoupled society where nature and human interplay intensively over distance, virtual water trade (VWT) plays an indispensable role in global water use sustainability. There has been little quantitative analysis of global water use sustainability depicting both overall system characteristics and flows between subsystems. In such a context, the extent to which virtual water transfer deviates from possible ideal expectations (i.e., virtual water flows from water-abundant regions to water-scarce ones), and its impact on global water use sustainability, are not well evaluated. Therefore, the global VWT vulnerability framework is proposed to delineate the gap between the real VWT and the possible optimal scenario, providing potential space for future optimization and regulation. Represented by the ratio of weighted total virtual water volume to the original one, the vulnerability is assessed from 2005 to 2015 based on the Eora input-output database and Virtual Water Transfer Multiplier which assigns differentiated weights to per unit volume of virtual water transfer based on the water stress levels of importers and those of exporters. Results show that the global VWT vulnerability has increased by 18.9% during the study period, with Africa and Southern and Central Asia making the biggest contribution. Developed countries contributed around 80% of the increased global VWT vulnerability. However, the proportion has fallen a bit, in terms of the conventional view of developed countries taking the approach of transferring responsibility to developing countries. Instead, the proportions of transferring responsibility between developing countries have rose by 10% to 30% during 2005-2015, partially due to stronger trade ties among developing countries. Our findings support policy decisions on tracing environmental responsibility for water scarcity and call for action to prevent water ecological downsides due to international trade.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Zexie Tang (ZXT), only two consists with Alismatis Rhizoma (AR) and Atractylodes macrocephala Rhizoma (AM), a classical Chinese medicine formula from Synopsis of the Golden Chamber with a history of 2000 years. Clinical observation in recent years has found that ZXT has excellent lipid-lowering effect. AIM OF THE STUDY: To explore the potential mechanism of ZXT ameliorates hyperlipidemia based on FKBP38/mTOR/SREBPs pathway. MATERIALS AND METHODS: WD-induced hyperlipidemia mice and oleic acid induced cell lipid accumulation model were used to investigate pharmacodynamic. The effect of ZXT on the transcriptional activity of SREBPs was detected by reporter gene assay. Proteins and downstream genes of mTOR/SREBPs pathway were detected in vivo and in vitro. Combined with network pharmacology and HPLC-Q-TOF/MS, the active ingredients were screened and identified. The interaction between active compounds of ZXT and FKBP38 protein were analyzed by docking analysis. RESULTS: ZXT decreased TC, TG and LDL-c levels in blood of WD-induced hyperlipidemia mouse model, and improved insulin resistance in vivo. ZXT also reduced TC, TG and lipid accumulation in cells line, and inhibited SREBPs luciferase activity, protein and its target genes expression such as FASN, HMGCR, etc. Meanwhile, ZXT inhibited protein expression levels of p-mTOR, p-S6K, etc in vitro and in vivo. Combined with network pharmacology and HPLC-Q-TOF/MS, 16 active ingredients were screened and identified. Docking results showed that active compounds of ZXT binding to FKBP38 and formed hydrogen bond. CONCLUSION: Our findings highlighted that ZXT ameliorates hyperlipidemia, in which FKBP/mTOR/SREBPs pathway might be the potential regulatory mechanism.

RESUMO

Three sesquiterpenoids were isolated and purified from the 95% ethanol extract of Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma by column chromatography on silica gel, Sephadex LH-20, ODS, and high-performance liquid chromatography(HPLC). Their chemical structures were identified on the basis of spectroscopic analysis and physiochemical properties as(7Z)-8ß,13-diacetoxy-eudesma-4(15),7(11)-diene(1), 7-oxo-7,8-secoeudesma-4(15),11-dien-8-oic acid(2), and guai-10(14)-en-11-ol(3). Compounds 1 and 2 are new compounds and compound 3 was obtained from Compositae family for the first time. Compounds 1, 2, and 3 showed weak inhibitory activities against sterol regulatory element-binding proteins(SREBPs).

The rapid process of urbanization, accompanied by the sharp increase of urban population and expansion of artificial surface, has resulted in the loss of natural ecosystems and the degradation of ecosystem services. Identifying and protecting key places that have high importance for ecological sustainability are great challenges. Ecological security patterns are such an integrated approach to protecting regional ecological sustainability. In this study, taking Yunnan Province, China as a case study area, ecological sources were identified through ecosystem services, and circuit theory was used to model ecosystem processes in heterogeneous landscapes via calculating the 'resistance' or 'current', and thus to identify ecological corridors and key ecological nodes. The results showed that, ecological security patterns included 66 ecological sources, 186 ecological corridors, 24 pinch-points and 10 barriers. In details, the ecological sources were mainly distributed in the southwest and northwest of Yunnan Province, with the ecological corridors locating along the high mountains, and both ecological sources and corridors were mostly covered with forest land. Pinch-points covered by forest land and cultivated land, were distributed in the middle of Yunnan Province along the rivers. Approximately 75.9% nature reserves were located in the identified ecological sources, and the remainings were mainly distributed in eastern Yunnan Province with small area, showing the effectiveness in identifying ecological security patterns. Among 81 projects of low-slope hill development carried out in Yunnan Province, 46.9% showed potential human stress on regional ecological security. Based on ecosystem services and circuit theory, this study provides a new approach to identifying the spatial range of ecological corridors and the specific location of key nodes for effective ecological conservation and restoration.
